Seems the quality has gone down quite a lot. We've been going to this bakery for over 20yrs, over the last 5yrs the quality went down. The chocolate cookies taste like they are missing sugar and the chocolate roll tastes like it's a couple days old. Not impressed. read more

I didn't realize this was a Jewish bakery until a long time Richmond resident told me they've been coming here for years since they're Jewish. I'v thought this was an old school type bakery with reasonable prices, but little did I know what kind of baking surprises were awaiting me. Their challah bread was pillowy soft and reminded me of hawaiian sweet bread. Their sufganiyah (jelly donut) fresh and tasty. I could go on, but I think you need to make your own discoveries. It's Hannukkah right now, and they have a great selection of specialty baking items. But get there early, as they sell out fast. A $10 or $20 bill will buy a lot. read more

* A Kosher bakery in Richmond?!?!?!?! * Ok, Richmond was a surprise location for a Kosher bakery. But just had to check it out. After all, they used to say you could identify the Jewish neighbourhoods in NY City by finding the high concentration of Chinese take-out places. So perhaps a neighbourhood with perhaps the highest concentration of Chinese people outside of China would have a wonderful Jewish bakery snuck away in it? This is a scaled down version of a NY Jewish bakery. They have many of the usual suspects, although a smaller variety. The dreamer in me decided to try the rye bread. A NY rye would be an amazing find! While it was decent it wasn't amazing sadly. The crust just wasn't right - it was a bit too soft. It just didn't have the texture you would expect in a NY rye. The inside was good though. But the crust is an important part of bread! Would I schlep (figured I should put some Yiddish into this review) all the way down to Richmond to visit the bakery? Probably not. When in Richmond I think I'll stick to bakeries like Kam Do (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/kam-do-restaurant-and-bakery-richmond#hrid:LwS5PRU2P9cUTjKQtT-5wg) instead! Oy vey! read more

Marcman, you don't do this awesome bakery justice. So the rye was sub-par, what about the ROLLS? What you have to try here is their amazing chocolate/poppy seed rolls, good lord, they have so much filling and the pastry is so flaky, sweet and crunchy. My bf's family goes here every weekend to pick up our pastry puffs (or the much less cute but literal term for them, sigh... rolls), super soft poppy-seed-smothered bagels and bread. So go on a Sunday morning if you want some baked stuff in Richmond. It's ridiculously cheap, too... rolls are ~1.50, huge, the bread is ~3$. They also sell kosher sausages and... their words, not mine, weiners. Sigh. Some words just will not phase themselves out. When will small business owners understand the importance of client care?? I'd easily give them 5 stars, because of the quality of the food - however, sometimes as I walk in and see one particular lady tending the counter, I know it will be a sour experience. Didn't really know about this small place and just saw it on the way to the grocery store next door. Prices are very reasonable. Got a chocolate cinnamon roll and some kind of cinnamon challah thing (kind of like bread pudding). Didn't get to eat the cinnamon challah thing until the next day and it was kind of dry. Not sure if that was because it was a little old or just the way it was. But the chocolate cinnamon roll was really good. I'd definitely go back next time I'm in Richmond. read more

This is not the type of bakery to go to if you are looking for a lot of sweets and icing. They seem to do more tarts, rolls, and breads. The bonus is that it is supposedly a kosher bakery. I asked the lady at the counter and she did acknowledge that it is a kosher facility. read more

Was given a referral to check this place out by a friend! I have not eaten Challah bread since I lived in London about 8 years ago. Picked some up today for $4 and was definitely a pleasant surprise. This bakery looks a bit run down from the outside, located in the Blundell plaza just before IGA, it doesn't have a huge selection on pastries but I could still feel the warmth coming from the freshly baked bread loaves! Also picked up an apple strudel for a picnic this afternoon! read more

It's just before 8 pm and most small shops in Garden City Centre are closed. I parked in the area off to the side of IGA and in front of this bakery, as it is raining and I have my two young boys with me - there's a sidewalk we can take that leads to IGA. When we got out of IGA, there's a silver mini-van parked beside our car and the (older, thin) man is unloading bags of flour. As we get in the car, he makes a snide comment about me parking in 'his' spot! I believe the parking lot is open to anyone who is shopping there and the spots are not reserved! I didn't comment, but as I started the car he starts shouting more about the parking, so I rolled down my window and told him that 'his' shop is closed and he's complaining about walking TWO extra steps to the door!!! Needless to say, I was not happy and will not buy anything for this bakery again. Like some recent posts...the food is not as it use to be. read more

Frequented this bakery for 18 years Best rye bread, European style, best Challah, no one in BC makes it better (maybe me).

The quality of the Challah is the measure of any kosher bakery. Garden City has the best Challah you'll find in the Metro Vancouver and I've tried them all. From the colour, texture, sweetness and taste - it is by far the best. It also freezes well. Better fresh for sure but I can' t make the trip to Richmond each week so I buy enough for the month. It is nice that they take orders over the phone. If you go after noon on a Friday, they might be sold out so it is good to either place your order over the phone or go in the morning. read more
