Jorge's crew arrived at the scheduled time and went straight to work starting with our tree. I watched as they systematically removed all the branches. Then, section by section the worker cut down the trunk. The crew was attentive, safe and efficient with their process. While one chainsaw was being used, the other was being cleaned and refueled. After the tree was more or less cut down, they rolled in the stump grinder and ground down what was left of the stump. They wasted no time. In less than an hour, they moved on to my neighbor's two skinnier trees and cut them down in the same fashion, lastly removing all the thorny rose bushes too. There was debris everywhere! Since they were almost done, I went into the house to grab my checkbook to pay Jorge. When I came out, his grew was gone and all the debris was cleaned up. It was as if nothing had happened. MAGIC. Only pay after the work is completed and make sure to get proper identification so you know who you're dealing with. Here is my experience: I signed a contract with Victor from VMS Landscaping about 2 weeks ago for retaining walls and steps in my hillside backyard. The total project cost was $10K. We agreed to a $1K deposit and then step-by-step payments. At first, things seemed fine. I paid Victor $2K to begin the retaining wall (total paid $3K). He brought in a crew and promised the job would be done in about a week and a half. Then issues began: He asked for another $2K before finishing the first step. I only agreed to $1K, which I paid after the retaining wall was completed. He then asked for $2K more to start step two. I told him I'd pay only once I saw work being done. After he showed up alone and did some work, I sent $2K (to his mother, at his request). From that point on, the project went downhill. He only showed up for two short days (around 3 hours each time), then stopped coming altogether. Despite repeated calls and texts, he has not returned. Twice he promised to send workers, but no one ever showed. At this point, I have paid him $6K (over half of the total project), but my yard is still unfinished and left messy with his tools scattered around. Victor, if you see this, I hope you take responsibility and finish the job. Don't let this situation ruin your reputation or your supposed 30 years in business.

Potential clients should be aware of the following: 1. No license or insurance - They used another contractor's insurance, but it lapsed during our project. 2. Poor attention to detail - Much of the work was sloppy or incorrect (details below). 3. Failure to finish the job - They left several tasks incomplete. 4. Misrepresentation of crew size - Claimed to have 8 workers, but over 4 months we never saw more than 4 on site. 5. Constantly asking for money early - Requested payments before agreed-upon dates. Each time I paid, he disappeared for several days. 6. Lack of communication - Like other reviewers noted, once paid, Victor stopped responding. I called every day for three weeks with no reply. Examples of sloppy or incorrect work: * Improper turf installation with pavers set inside. Lines in turf and not properly installed around pavers. * Crew unable to cut pavers at 45° angles for steps. * Walkway offset 6 inches from the door and never corrected. * Gravel sloped toward the house, causing water to run to the foundation. * No skilled carpenter on the team--poor results with any woodwork. * Planting never completed. * Uneven paver joints (some gaps 1/16", others 1/4"). * Retaining wall base not compacted properly--cracking and sinking appeared within 3 months. Final warning: One of their vendors reported that Victor's team picked up (and stole) supplies I had paid for. The vendor had no proof, so they ultimately honored the order but insisted on delivering only when I was present, as they no longer trusted Victor or VMS.

We were able to coordinate an in-person visit for him to conduct a visual inspection, complete measurements, and discuss the various steps I need to take to get my project kicked off the ground. He provided a verbal estimate for my project which is an approximation anyway because materials, concrete, and labor may vary depending on several variables. I would say Antonio was professional, prompt, and concise with his assessment.
