I asked if they were closed and he said, unfortunately yes, however, he went on to offer me two full bags of bagels. On top of that, he did not charge me for the drink that I also asked to pay for. The BEST bagels in San Diego - maybe in all of Southern California. The new owner, Michael, is excellent and his presence and management really shows. The employees are happy (or happier!) and helpful and willing. It's really nice to see the atmosphere of Garden State match the flavor. Finally found the real deal back East bagel shop that reminds me so much of my old bagel shop, Bagels International in Bradley Beach, New Jersey. Sorry, Mike! The best bagels are in Jersey, not NY! Hence, the name Garden State Bagels! Not only are the bagels the bomb, but they have PORK ROLL and WHITEFISH SALAD! Worth the six hour ride to Encinitas from Phoenix! Best bagels period. Wish they would open a branch down in San Diego. They are in Encinitas and opened a branch in Carlsbad instead of San Diego. Michael the new owner and Humberto are amazing. Yesterday was the first day my mouth exploded with flavors from an bagel. My goodness! Seriously though, I couldn't believe how awesome this bagel was. Keep in mind this was my first time here and they hooked me like a fish. I experienced the French Toast Bagel, yes, I said French Toast Bagel. It was amazing and I will for sure be getting this again. I also ordered the Jalapeno Cheese Bagel, nomnomnom is all I heard cause it was that great. What I like about this Jalapeno Bagal is that they not only load it with cheese, but they use the pickled type of Jalapenos and that is my favorite type. A pretty average bagel/deli place. You can get bagels or sandwiches. Individual bagels seem on the more expensive side (1.49+), and the bagel sandwiches are average priced. There's a good selection of bagels, but it seems by mid-late morning, they don't make anymore so whatever is there is what you're stuck with. I decided on the egg cheese bacon bagel sandwich. There's a generous amount of cheese, a precooked egg, and not-cooked-enough bacon. The bagel itself is alright, soft and chewy but with burnt toppings for an everything bagel. Overall, it's an okay bagel place, but it's not the best. read more
