My son and I stopped at Golden State Bagel in Carlsbad after a long weekend in San Diego, and it was a convenient find right near Costco and just off the freeway. The shop is small, located in a strip mall, but you can smell the fresh, house-made bagels as soon as you walk in, which is always a good sign. The menu is simple but has everything you'd want: fresh bagels, toppings, and hearty bagel sandwiches. They even feature a bagel of the week. I went with the cheese jalapeño bagel and ordered "The Notch" (lox, cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers). I asked for mine open-faced, which was an extra $2.50 on top of the $18 price, but that's about what I usually pay at home, so it felt fair. The portion was generous with plenty of cream cheese, thick slices of tomato and onion, and a healthy serving of lox. The bagel itself was very fresh, though I was expecting a stronger jalapeño and cheese flavor--it leaned more bready than bold. The toppings definitely carried the flavor. Hopefully, that was just an off day for the bagel itself. One downside: some of the toppings are displayed openly in a case, and we did notice a couple of flies, which took away from the otherwise fresh, clean feel. The shop has a few small tables and a casual setup with a drink case and coffee bar. Staff was quick, efficient, and helpful, though not overly conversational. Overall, Golden State Bagel is a convenient stop for a fresh bagel sandwich, and while I wasn't blown away by the bagel itself, the toppings were excellent and the location is very handy. read more

I have now "fired" GS Bagels as my go-to for my over 3 year every-Thursday tradition of buying two dozen bagles and cream cheese for my work team, spending over $100/week which included a 20% tip, regardless of service level (not the employee's fault...). The G.S. employees working there are courteous, but are overworked. The straw that broke the camel's back was when they told me that they could no longer accept phone orders(!) After being late to my 9:00 meeting 3 times in a row because of slow service, I gave up. It's difficult to now go to Panera, but I can get in and out of there in 5 minutes-lower quality but better service. Just came here on Monday since it's close to us. We really really liked it. We had an onion bagel and also a meat one. Our favorite was the blueberry bagel!! It's located close to carlsbad shopping outlets so if you wanted to grab a quick bite, Garden State Bagel is your place. Great bagel spot to come to for a morning breakfast. They don't have the bagels laid out in the case for you to look at; instead, they are in trays against the wall. We got a few of the everything bagels - one as a sandwich with bacon and egg, and the other two with cream cheese. Even though they had "low fat" cream cheese as one of the options on the board, they said they didn't have this when I requested it. This past week, I stopped by this store with my mom. It was my second time going as the first time the food and service were excellent (which is why I didn't rate this review fully two stars). However, this second time was awful. We went in and were taking our time looking at the menu as nobody was in there waiting but us. So, a worker named Anna was waiting to take our order, and we went forward (I'll admit still a bit indecisive). And when she was ready (which she was nice at first), i was waiting for my mom to give her order. Since my mom is blind and can't read the menu board or really differentiate between the different flavor bagels, she was naturally asking some questions about the different flavors and which ones weren't the specialty, which has a higher upcharge. I also noticed a couple came in waiting to give their order. Anna seemed to have gotten pretty annoyed and was practically just pointing to it and talking down to my mom. We could automatically tell she was getting very irritated, which made my mom become defensive. Because of this, my mom did not want to get any bagels anymore, and this really upset me because I wanted my mom to get a nice treat for herself. And I was also wanting to tell my mom too about the pricing and which bagels weren't the specialty, but I also wasnt aware which ones were and weren't specialty. So as my mom and I went to leave, Anna just kept yelling "have a good day" several times in a very passive aggressive manner. And we know how people react because my mom has been discriminated against because of her eye condition many times before. I turned around and informed her once again that she is blind and cannot see the sign. And she was like "that is why I was pointing which ones!" I left and went to talk to my mom about the situation. I then decided to go back and get the manager's information. When I went back, another worker was there at the register. So, I waited for her. Anna asked if I needed anything else, and I ignored her as the other worker was available. I asked her if the manager was available. And she was super nice and said he wasn't, and I asked if he had any info to contact him. She gave me a number I could call, to which, I said thank you and went to leave. As I went to leave, the couple I mentioned early was leaving, and Anna yelled out to them "Thank you guys for being so nice!" This was obviously a jab at my mom and I. The entire time she had a huge smirk on her face. This whole interaction greatly disappointed me. My mom's eye condition has affected her entire wellbeing. The least a worker in the service industry could do is at least take into consideration other people's needs, and a place to have such a worker is saddening. I mean, we were willing to pay 17+ dollars for two bagels and a spread. Come on now! At least in the end we saved some money... read more

Got to the train so so excited to eat my bagel to realize the guy got my order wrong and gave me regular cream cheese instead of scallion. I really do not like regular cream cheese and instead of enjoying my bagel, I begrudgingly ate it. I did not enjoy it. The bagel itself wasn't even all that great. I was hungry and in transit and had no choice to go back and rectify the situation but it left a very bad taste about the bagel shop itself. My friend told me the Encinitas location is much better.
