My son and I stopped at Golden State Bagel in Carlsbad after a long weekend in San Diego, and it was a convenient find right near Costco and just off the freeway. The shop is small, located in a strip mall, but you can smell the fresh, house-made bagels as soon as you walk in, which is always a good sign. The menu is simple but has everything you'd want: fresh bagels, toppings, and hearty bagel sandwiches. They even feature a bagel of the week. I went with the cheese jalapeño bagel and ordered "The Notch" (lox, cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers). I asked for mine open-faced, which was an extra $2.50 on top of the $18 price, but that's about what I usually pay at home, so it felt fair. The portion was generous with plenty of cream cheese, thick slices of tomato and onion, and a healthy serving of lox. The bagel itself was very fresh, though I was expecting a stronger jalapeño and cheese flavor--it leaned more bready than bold. The toppings definitely carried the flavor. Hopefully, that was just an off day for the bagel itself. One downside: some of the toppings are displayed openly in a case, and we did notice a couple of flies, which took away from the otherwise fresh, clean feel. The shop has a few small tables and a casual setup with a drink case and coffee bar. Staff was quick, efficient, and helpful, though not overly conversational. Overall, Golden State Bagel is a convenient stop for a fresh bagel sandwich, and while I wasn't blown away by the bagel itself, the toppings were excellent and the location is very handy. read more

Just came here on Monday since it's close to us. We really really liked it. We had an onion bagel and also a meat one. Our favorite was the blueberry bagel!! The blueberry cream cheese was the best thing I've ever had! It's was sweet but not to sweet and excellent pair with the blueberry bagel. Will definitely eat that again. I decided to try it again thinking that was a one off. Well, again this bagel was so stale. I had to throw it away. Bagels should have a soft interior, not dry. Staff is so nice and patient. I ordered the pizza bagel on an everything bagel and it was super delicous!!!! I love that they have chocolate chip and super cinnamon. Those are usually my favorite. It's crazy to think even panera doesnt have a chocolate chip bagel and they're a big chain company. This Ma and Pa shop is truely amazing. It's located close to carlsbad shopping outlets so if you wanted to grab a quick bite, Garden State Bagel is your place. Also if you get the pizza bagel in the super early morning, there might be a slight wait for the oven to warm up, but trust it's totally worth the wait. The bagels are consistently good. New ownership has made the level of customer service hit an all time low at this location and there has been turnover of good people. I have now "fired" GS Bagels as my go-to for my over 3 year every-Thursday tradition of buying two dozen bagles and cream cheese for my work team, spending over $100/week which included a 20% tip, regardless of service level (not the employee's fault...). The G.S. employees working there are courteous, but are overworked. The straw that broke the camel's back was when they told me that they could no longer accept phone orders(!) After being late to my 9:00 meeting 3 times in a row because of slow service, I gave up. It's difficult to now go to Panera, but I can get in and out of there in 5 minutes-lower quality but better service. If the service level changes, GSB might get back one of it's high value, recurring customer...(sorry Mike) read more

Hands down the best bagel shop in San Diego county and North County. Nothing compares to New York City bagels and this place does! My family is from Jersey and I frequent a lot and this place is spot on in comparison to bagel shops on the east coast. Also what makes this place great is Esther. She's amazing I don't know how she remembers everyone's name and orders but she does. She's already telling me my order as I walk in. She really solidifies the experience. Great bagel spot to come to for a morning breakfast. They don't have the bagels laid out in the case for you to look at; instead, they are in trays against the wall. We got a few of the everything bagels - one as a sandwich with bacon and egg, and the other two with cream cheese. Even though they had "low fat" cream cheese as one of the options on the board, they said they didn't have this when I requested it. Service was great. I was energetically greeted upon entry, and everyone behind the counter seemed like a cohesive team. They have seating inside and a couple tables outside. I got my usual, sesame bagel with chive cream cheese. The bagel didn't have that many sesame seeds (other places have it almost entirely covered with sesame seeds), so tasted like a plain bagel. The chive cream cheese was similar, not very chive-y, and tasted mostly like regular cream cheese. But holy cow, they are overly generous with the cream cheese amount.
