Yes, it isnt the boujee hardscape places that you would need to take out a loan for. However, at garden supply, they are a no frills, hard working crew that has a HUGE selection on pavers at competitive prices in favor of the consumer. They are a small business, so maybe phones calls dont all get answered. What i will say is dont give up, keep calling and/or email them. They are worth it, and they will most likely have what youre looking for. The associate that helped us was Jason. The crew in the yard is headed by the "Tio", an older associate who is this sweet, hard working gentleman focused on getting the job done while taking care of you. Most of the poor reviews are pointed at customer service. my experience was really good. But again, my expectations are tempered in knowing that this isnt some horrible, boujee, expensive supply store. They are a small family business that might not be perfect, but theyre doing their best at competitive prices. Although, one review said it best that it is helpful to know exactly what it is youre shopping for before coming; it just makes everything easier. If this is a struggle for you, definitely use a contractor as a point person. But other than that, this place really has it all. Horrible service. I'll never return to this place. I ask you 2 employees for a shovel so I can fill sand bags and they pretend not to know the word shovel. I find it hard to believe you work at a garden supply and have never heard the word shovel. I'm sorry I'm not fluent in Spanish. All these guys in the yard ignoring me. Horrible Horrible customer service!!! I will never do business with this company again. Purchased some material for an outdoor project and had some material left over. They would not take any of it back. Said all sales are final? No where on the receipt does it say all sales are final! As a matter of fact you have up to 30 days to return. Possible re-stocking fee depending on the product which I completely understand, but this was product in stock and on the shelf. I would of been ok with that. Long story short one of their employees tried got of their forklift and tried to fight me for asking him to not block the drive ways of 2 of my neighbors. As the neighboring Apartment management that's has to also deal with traffic in the wrong lane I tried offering parking in front of my building . I was greeted with " let me do my own f!@#$ng job". He got of his forklift and approached me some kinder words "... to get the f#$% out of here or ..." so i did then he busted out his camera and tried to " Karen" me. This review is solely based on their customer service and lack thereof. After numerous attempts of calling and being placed on hold, I finally called back to get a price for pavers on a decent sized backayrd. Without even hearing the full scope of my measurements, the gal tells me I'm roughly looking at a $9k price. I then respond telling her she didn't even allow me to give her the full square footage and all the pavers I'm looking at and she then states that the price can change. No sh!t the price can change because you didn't even allow me to go over my project and requirements in detail. My recommendation to anyone looking for pavers is to look elsewhere because these people don't even want to be bothered by hearing the details of your project, in order to give you an actual estimate. read more

Went there to look at concrete retaining wall systems. The first guy I talked to had a hard time peeling his eyes away from the soccer game on their tv. I was thankful he wasn't there when I had a follow up question several minutes later. Yet, two employees were sitting there looking up at the game. I used this place on the recommendation of my contractor. He uses them for hardscape all the time because he says they have the best prices. They do have very good prices, but it's at the sacrifice of service. They are completely geared towards contractors who know exactly what they want, not consumers. For a consumer like myself, it is a bewildering, chaotic place which rarely answers the phone or email. For some reason several pavers were missing from one of my pallets and it took an extra day to straighten out. I eventually got everything I ordered, but in future I will go elsewhere. Their delivery charge was higher than competitors and they keep 1/3 of their pallet deposit, so I'm not so sure it works out any cheaper in the long run. read more

Not only do I loathe this place but the company they recommend for doing EXPENSIVE ASTRO TURF is the biggest con man that ever worked for me. San Carlos Garden Supply charges you maximum for the best turf and then recommends Silicon Valley Pavers to do the install-he sets it all up pulls up in his new truck and once in awhile in his BMW and then leaves idiots on site that you have no way to communicate with. I have asked "Joaquin"from Silicon Valley Pavers to fix the turf at a property at least 4 times and he is always busy...the turf is pulling up the bender board is cracked and he tells me oh well not his problem. The garden supply I am sure is related to him and I will never go there again!!! This may be the last job this UNLICENSED vendor does if I can help it-also want to know what he paid in taxes for the $30,000 job he did and that wasn't including the turf!!!!! The turf was an additional $30K to San Carlos Garden and they over measured by 20 feet!!!!!!!!! If I could give them less than one star I would. read more

The selection for pavers and retaining wall blocks at this landscaping supply store is great. They have many products that others don't carry. For natural stone, there are places with a much bigger selection, though, for example Peninsula Building Materials in Redwood City, or Lyngso. The reason I only rate this place 3 stars is that the sales crew does not seem very knowlegeable, and many don't seem to understand English well. But if you do your homework and know what you want, this place can be a good source. Their main location is in Los Altos, on El Camino. That store is bigger, has more items in stock, but has the same problem with sales staff. If you're needing a place where you feel special and receive smiles this isn't your place. If you need a place with service, ample stock and the best prices, this is your place. I have completed two projects in the past couple years and Garden Supply is my go-to shop for supplies. There are times where you need to be assertive & polite when you have a question. I've never had any issues and I've been to the shop 12-15 times in the past two years. The place does require patience in the spring & summer especially Saturday mornings. read more

Least-organized business I've ever been to. All business conducted with paper and pen. No computer use. Hit or miss English usage. This led to frustration and costly mistakes. I would place a phone order, then try and cancel it prior to pickup to get a different material color, but they would refuse to do so without the paper receipt. How I could have a paper receipt from a phone order is beyond me. Lack of organization also means costly (time and money) mistakes - even after a phone / text confirmation of an order the wrong material showed up. Yes, someone might have scribbled something on a piece of paper somewhere, but that piece of paper wasn't looked at before delivery. Juan also is loathe to do a refund. When I had a never-picked-up order, I asked to simply refund it. No, he insisted, we will do a store credit for you. I reluctantly agreed, then had to dicker over paper & pen scribblings to try and reconcile. I'm convinced I came up $250 short in the end, but apart from arguing in Spanglish over scribbles on paper I have no real way to get it back. Their prices aren't that different from Lyngso, and Lyngso has (gasp) computers. read more

The cheapest quote I got was from Richert Lumber (Ace Hardware) in Pleasanton. And I sent RFQs to over 15 other paver suppliers. This place is awful. Nothing is marked on what it is, nor what it costs. This huge flaw forces you to deal with what I would consider the most confusing customer service I've seen. You look in the yard at unmarked product. You wait in line to find out what it is and what it costs. They come out to the yard and help you until some shiny thing in the corner interrupts their focus, then they disappear. I can only imagine how much more successful the experience could be if they only kept up with a few simple things. There's a dozen different types of fake grass on display, 20% is marked with what it is, all other is not. They have boxes of unmarked samples (useless) no pricing, you have to go inside, wait in line to ask simple pricing questions. What if: you marked everything with a simple sign, put the model number and per square foot cost? Mark the pavers, mark everything. It would save you money and time, not to mention smiling faces leaving your business happy instead of mad and looking for someone else to do business with. read more

Called office 6 times to pay for pavers ordered by my contractor. Never answered in person. Had to drive there .They couldn't find my order. Had to make new order. I Watched they never answer the phone. one of the worst parts was paying DEPOSIT $24.00 per pallet plus Tax (dont think this is legal, The tax) Then I returned the pallets back intact. They only return $16.00 per pallet.. This is written at bottom of receipt which you dont see until you have Paid. I guess they are charging $8.00 per pallet rental fee plus tax.. This place has OBVIOUSLY gone through changes in recent years if you track the reviews here. Many 1 stars like mine based on the absolutely RUDE inconsiderate people that work here! Yes, their prices are good, but come on, if you are not one of their "good ol boys", you will find your self having to be assertive to get anyone to even offer to help you! I have been down there 4-5 times for a simple planter project and every time I see the counter people chatting with their "cronies" about this and that while I wait patiently for them to offer to help me. When I made my order for just 105 bricks, I made it clear with their own brochure what style and color I wanted and I told them I wanted my contractor to pick the bricks and did not want to buy by the pallet! I wrote this out and had the guy staple it to my order and yet the day my contractor went to pick them up, they had to call me to get the color again and in spite of me telling him one more time that my contractor is to pick the stones because some of them have obviously been chipped in shipment and/or storage, they gave him a pallet! Now I will have to return any stones that are too chipped to use! I will not be going back and hope the OWNER of this place sees this and cleans house! read more

This is the first negative review I have ever written. My experience with the San Carlos Garden Center was a nightmare and they would neither acknowledge they had done anything wrong or offer any measures to correct the problem. I had paid them $100.00 to deliver a 540 sq. ft. roll of artificial turf, a $2,220. purchase from their store. It arrived in their dump truck in a roll that was all bent and scrunched in the shape of a horseshoe. You could clearly see all the creases and bumps caused by folding the carpet roll. I expected it to be delivered in a straight roll, like any carpet. It was left in my driveway in a crumpled heap where it looked like a pile of elephant turds. When we laid it out you could still see the fold lines, bumps and discoloration from being scrunched. It looked horrible. Smoothing it out was like trying to restore a large poster that had been crumpled up. You just can't. When I called the manager Juan, he just blew me off and said they never had a complaint before, and told me to call the manufacturer of the turf, who obviously had nothing to do with the problem. Garden supply is my go to location for local cal stone products. Inside staff is very helpful however the yard crew has recently went through some changes and will leave you hanging for some time and pick and choose who they want to help. This leads to wasted time trying to get help. Hope they get this resolved soon so we don't wait 1/2hr for our order to get filled. read more

Garden Supply is probably has the best prices of any of the distributors that I've used. It isn't close to me, but most of the times it is worth driving and picking up materials. Also they have a very large selection of pavers stones which is what I use. I always get very good service, and they are usually flexible when it comes to delivery dates and times. Last winter my wife and I bought pavers for our front yard there and it worked out great. Best prices around and they delivered the pallets of huge stone to our house for a reasonable fee. Now were getting ready to do the back yard, and after shopping around all the other rockeries in the bay, they once again have the best price. My experience at San Carlos Garden Supply was disappointing. They have perhaps slightly lower prices than Penninsula Building Supply and Lyngso, but don't expect professional service. When you call, it seems that putting you on hold means laying the phone down next to a speaker playing latin music, very loudly, while you hear them chat in the background. Phone orders aren't accompanied by a receipt, either mailed or faxed. They delivered an incorrect order to me and had not even a packing slip for me to check against. When they say they'll call you back, don't count on it. I have worked with the other two vendors for years and thought I'd give these guys a try, but I find the service unacceptable. read more
