Let's start this review by talking about the ambiance of the Garland Cafe. Decor-wise this place is no-thrills. The walls are sparsely adorned with a few drawings, a handful of license plates, and an American flag hanging from shower curtain loops. There were snowflakes on the wall that I was not sure if they were leftover from a Christmas past, or wishful thinking on a hot July day. Oddly, they did not seem out of place... But as we all know, the soul of a place is not in its decor, but rather in its people. The people here make this place. This place defines the phrase "down-home". The patrons are all intertwined into each others conversations down to everyone in the place saying "amen" after someone quietly says grace over their meal. Then, after grace and "amen's the conversations all resume. Here, there is no typical customer, the place is filled with all backgrounds...a table of people on their way to church, another table with officers ( who were applauded when the walked in), a table of folks who had partied all night, and me, just a Yelper trying a new place, to get another review and a few more photos under my belt. Nothing binding us all together except the pleasure of each others company in a place that fosters the ability to do so. That to me is an ambiance I will take over gilded gold furnishings any time! I ordered the make your own breakfast special. What a concept, let the customer decide what they want, not what you choose to pair up together for them. It certainly worked for me this morning! Oh my! Where do I start? Is it the sticky dirty table or the sticky dirty ketchup bottle or maybe the sticky nasty hot sauce bottle. No, let's start with the place just not being clean, service was ok, nice smile, but that was the best thing about the whole visit. Food was not fresh, most likely heated up from frozen. It's been years since I've been here, but the food was just as good now as I remember it being back then. Got there around 10:45 for breakfast and it was busy, but I was able to get a table right away. It's a small place and stayed pretty busy during my stay. I like their build your own meal menu so you can get exactly what you want. They also have other meal options. It's quite an extensive menu. I had the omelet with ham, mushrooms and cheese with a side of home fries and a bagel and cream cheese. The portions are great and quickly fill you up. The coffee was good too. Not too strong and not too weak. For a good inexpensive and tasty meal, you can't go wrong with Garland Cafe. read more

I just realized I've been coming here for 22 years- literally since they opened. They have barely raised their prices since, but always kept up with the amount of food they give you. They use processed orange American cheese, store bought croissants .. but everything is still delicious. This is not far to table, it's not highland park- but it's good food, never had a long wait even with to go items. I've never regretted an order from here. Most places a side order of bacon is 1-3 slices, we got 6. A breakfast taco was overflowing it was so full, eggs were fluffy and tortillas soft. Service is a big whopping disappointment. They truly don't care that you are in there. No water refills, no greeting, and no enjoyment. I had to get up to ask them if we could order and the server with the glasses was annoyed and didn't say anything. I also needed to grab silverware and menus for the family. 50% of the tables stayed dirty. The servers were super nice to the regulars and treated any newbie table as if we were dirt. Wanted to have very late breakfast and saw reviews here for great pancakes. Cheap diner atmosphere, but got a table immediately at 2pm on a Sunday. 4 of us ordered omelette, pancakes, eggs, biscuits, gravy, chicken fried steak. If you are looking for a place with atmosphere then don't go here. This is a modest family owned restaurant that my wife and I have been there dozens of times...sometimes 2 or 3 times a week. You soon recognize that they have a lot of "regulars" that probably go there every day. We've never had anything we that we didn't like but their specialty is breakfast food all day. We have moved to Waxahachie but if we know we are going anywhere on that side of town we will call in an order and fly by to pick it up. I could probably live on the "House Scramble" with pancakes (best pancakes ever) on the side. My wife breaks from tradition once in a while and orders the fried catfish. Everything is under $10. I don't get these people that give this place poor reviews. If you want premium quality service and prime food go to Saltgrass or Silver Fox. Pay attention to the reviews regarding horrible service. Food: Great portions for amazing prices, however, nothing really stands out. The hash browns are crispy, but not the most flavorful. Pancakes seem to be what anyone could whip up. Eggs are simply eggs. Sausages seem to be store-bought, but honestly, what do I know? They don't have fresh squeezed orange juice, they have bottled Tropicana. There aren't any real complaints, but nothing truly is to die for here. Environment: There's not an actual theme. The decorations look like tacky $8 wall mounts from Ross. They also leave a cart of dirty dishes on the side of the restaurant where it is completely visible to the dining area. Service: What service? A couple of teenagers who take advantage of the owners/boss because they know they don't care. The place is a tiny run down diner, which is fine, some of the best food comes from hole in the walls. Started noticing stains on walls, ceilings, and other unappealing asthetics. Ordered cinnamon apple waffles. The waffle was bland. No glavor at all. The apple was canned apples dumped on top. The bacon was chewy. They brought my meal a full 5 minutes before my husbands, who didnt get half his order. He said his biscuits and gravy were really good which brings my rating from a 2 star to 3 star. We finished eating and flagged down a staff memeber to get my husbands pancakes, which he said was okay. Coffee was fine. Water was unfiltered tap. Definitely wont be coming again. read more

It has all the best healthy foods from the vegetables: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, carrots, cucumbers, to the nuts, dried fruit, two cheeses, and grilled chicken. Arrived at 9:19AM Saturday morning, no greeting as I'm walking in. There was empty spaces but dirty dishes were just sitting there. One of the young waitresses glanced at me as I called her and then completely ignored me. Three minutes later another young girl comes and takes the plates then 1 min later another one wipes the table. The cashier came quickly to take my order. I placed my order at 9:31 AM. My daughter had chocolate chip pancakes and bacon and I ordered 2 potato with onions and green bell pepper tacos. Her order came out at 10:01AM and the cashier walks over to tell me the cook put eggs on my tacos so she will give me tacos for free ( 1.98 for 2 tacos). At 10:10AM my tacos arrived. Chocolate chip pancakes: were good nothing special. Bacon: A lil over cooked but eatable. Tacos: Greasy! Potato was undercook, green bell peppers and onions undercooked and all under seasoned. Overall my ticket was $7.98 without the tacos. I paid for the ticket of the grandmother and her two grandkids next to us as they were well behaved and I knew the long wait they had in front of them to get their food. I have gave this place 4 tries and I think I'm going to file it with my "do not go" lists of restaurants. The price is not worth the long wait, undercooked and no flavor food. They employee teenagers for waitresses and these ladies act like they are doing people a favor. Maybe that's why the prices are low, cause they only have one cook and teenagers working for them. I ordered the mega breakfast with French toast and enjoyed it thoroughly, probably in large part because I was in China for 5 weeks and missed the American breakfast/diner. The price point is amazing, and it's solid diner food. It did take a little while for us to get our food but they were busy and I wasn't starving so it wasn't a huge deal. This is one of my favorite places to visit growing up. As students back then, this was our go to place for cheap, delicious breakfast food. They have great daily specials on their menu. They also serve sandwiches, burgers and fries. I mainly come here for breakfast and order from their "Build your own Breakfast" section where you can select 3 items for $3.99 which also comes with a drink. There's just too many selections on their menu for just one visit. Overall, our bill for two breakfast meals was under $10. read more
