As a serious buyer and collector of vintage guitars, it's a shame to encounter such an unprofessional approach to business. Unfortunately, the owner Rick is unscrupulous at best. I purchased a guitar advertised at nearly $10,000.00. I was also interested in another high-value instrument. They took almost a week to ship the '66 Strat I purchased, and then, without warning, decided to refund my purchase due to "fraud." In return, asking for a wire instead. Spoiler alert, Rick lied. Of course there's no fraud on my AMEX, if there were he would have been notified upon the purchase. If there were, I would have been notified. He made it all up so he could negotiate a deal with newer terms. And then, like the brat he is, he had his employee Nate Kieser deliver the fake news. What a joke, and welcome to the World today; a place where a grown man decides to change his mind well after a deal was consummated. You've been warned, this clown will play games. Rick, this is your opportunity to be a man and honor the deal we made. I'll amend this review if you stick to the terms of our original agreement, if not, buyers beware. read more

Purchased a 1963 Gibson J45 from an out-of-state shop in "excellent condition." Uh, not quite. Popped frets, crappy setup, string buzz; its poor playability certainly did not match its condition. Garret Park Guitars absolutely crushed the task of making it right. Had to double check the serial number because it was like a different guitar once they were done with it. Those guys are badass. Greatly exceeded my expectations! There's lots of good things to say about this independently owned shop. I went there to look at their acoustic guitars and was impressed by their selection of mid to high end Breedlove guitars. They have the best selection of Breedlove guitars in the entire MD/VA/DC area. If you want to experience the best that Breedlove has to offer, this is the place to come. They carry new PRS and Fender guitars (just like Guitar Center) but one thing that makes this place special is their awesome used guitar room. There were so many really nice used Gibson, Fender, and PRS guitars. Some day I'll have to come back to spend some quality time in that room! Finally, their pedal selection is outstanding. They carry the full range of Strymon pedals (the best you can buy!). They also carry quite a few JHS, Boss, and electo-harmonix pedals. First off, I am very particular about my guitars. I baby them and very hesitant about people working on them. I have had some disappointing results in the past (not from Garrett Park Guitars). So, long story short, I was able to recently acquire a guitar I sold almost 20 years ago. It holds an extreme amount of sentimental value to me. My parents purchased the guitar for me when I was in high school. My parents have passed on and I was able to get the guitar back in my hands last year. The guitar needed some new frets and a major tune-up to return to decent playable condition. Really hesitant to let someone work on it, I gave Garrett Park Guitars a try due to the ratings and vibe of the place. When I got my guitar back, I was blown away by the work accomplished. The replaced frets were done amazingly and the adjustments were spot on. Thank you Garrett Park Guitars for bringing back my treasured guitar to playable form and easing my mind. This guitar is in my possession now to stay. Highly recommend. read more

I had a guitar repaired here. When I dropped off the guitar the guy I interacted with was nice and gave me a repair ticket and said they'd call me to let me know timeline. Unfortunately I never received a call to let me know when it would be finished. I had to call back twice over the course of two weeks to get the ball rolling. Turns out it took only an hour or two to complete the repair. When I went to pickup the guitar the guys were sitting behind the desk and looked as if I had bothered them when I arrived. I asked to pickup guitar and asked about a pedal price. The salesman didn't know it off hand and simply quoted me the full retail price. Most guitar shops both online and brick and mortar will offer a discount on items. This place had no interest in this. I think this is why brick and mortar shops don't do well against online retailers. Especially with customer service at places like Sweetwater where you really get knowledgeable and enthusiastic customer service. I think this could be a good learning opportunity for this place to strive to be better and more engaged with customers. I would have bought the pedal that day but the lack of interest and help convinced me not to. My experience is unique to me and those visits so I don't know how this place normally operates but for me I think I will not return. read more

My significant other and I came in for the first time (we live over an hour away) and we were seriously considering purchasing an amp and another guitar for our collection (I had also picked out a book to purchase). While we were checking out the gear that we were interested in, there was an older gentleman on staff that came in seemingly very annoyed and he approached us very confrontationally and told us to "keep it down." We were being careful and respectful with the gear, and the volume levels were not excessive either- we also were in a room far from other people. There are even signs in the shop that say "we want to hear you play." We were startled and confused particularly since this has never happened to is anytime we've gone to a shop to check out gear. Anyway, he closed the door to the room and we turned down the amps. He came in again after awhile and he barked at us saying "Are you going to buy anything or what?!" and then stormed off. It was completely unprofessional how he approached us. We immediately decided to leave. We did purchase the book and a pack of picks still, and the kid at the front desk was really nice. They missed out on business of larger price tag items today because of how that older staff member (or owner/teacher?) treated us, and we won't be returning. If you don't want people to play the instruments, then don't put signs up saying "we want to hear you play" and don't provide instrument cables to customers. read more

Picked up a Godin 5th Avenue from them, seeing it first on Reverb. Living only 30 minutes away, I chose to do an in person pickup. Despite a little confusion regarding the price, the transaction was smooth and easy. Soren was really helpful, set me up with the two models he had and I was able to make a quick decision and walked out satisfied...and I felt confident that if the guitar wasn't a fit, I'd be fine. read more

Total Scum Bags! Bought a 2000$ guitar through them online around Thanksgiving. It was to be a Christmas gift for my significant other. When it came we gave it a once over. It had several scratches that were not disclosed but we came to a 100 dollar partial refund agreement. It then went in the closet for 2 weeks before going under the Christmas tree. When we brought it out to Put it under the tree, my Significant other went to give it a thorough setup. Which is when we noticed the truss rod and truss rod cavity were crooked. When adjusted it twisted the neck slightly making the guitar a lemon. We were devastated and very apologetic when we asked to return the Guitar. Even offered a 10 percent restocking fee. To our shock the merchant said no....he had a TWO DAY RETURN POLICY and he would NOT return the guitar. Through further conversation i learned they were definitely aware of the defect. Even going as far to say "it had a Gibson QA signature on the defective part. therefore it must be fine and i was being unreasonable". I told him that detective guitars leave factories all the time but the conversation only devolved. Moral of the story.......Judge a merchant not by how they treat you when everything goes fine. Judge them by how they treat you when there is a problem. Garret Park Guitars definitely gets an F here. read more

I find myself shocked that Garrett Park Guitars refused to honor a $40 gift certificate, issued by them, which was only 2 years old, because I failed to produce a receipt. The gift card was just that - a gift. I have no receipt. I have a gift certificate riddled with spelling errors that they sent from an out of state purchaser who phoned them with the order. I was told there was nothing they could do because their computer system doesn't go back 2 years. They weren't even persuaded when I showed them the Maryland Attorney General's website which showed they were in violation of the law since the certificate is less than 4 years old. It seems short sighted and blatantly illegal for them to not honor the gift certificate. Now I not only have to start doing my guitar supplies shopping on Amazon but I believe I need to contact the AG's office. All over $40. Customers beware. read more

The guys at Garrett park are super cool.. but I gave them a brand new, out of the box, U.S. made Tele ($1400), a brand new James burton fender custom shop control plate ($99), a brand new Ray butts spec filter tron pick ($180) and the task of creating a clear pick guard, moving my neck pickup into the middle, and installing the pick up I had provided at the neck ($170). When I went to pick up the guitar the pick ups were slanted vertically, my control plate was bowed due to a wire that he had not stuck in the route, and worst of all, there was a chip in the corner of the guitar about a half inch big. When I asked the tech about it he denied any involvement in the chip. You don't just buy a brand new guitar and not notice a half inch chip in it. Not to mention, there was dirt under the pick guard. It seems like the luthier that had worked on the guitar didn't even take the time to look at it before he handed it to me. There also was a second pick up installed in my guitar (due to the output of the pickup replaced). Although I had been in contact with the shop throughout the day, they notified me of this change just 15 minutes prior to my arrival, after it had already been installed. I was charged for the new pickup without being consulted. In the past, they've done a great job on my Rickenbacker bass guitar, but their work is not consistent. If you have a rare guitar or expensive piece of equipment like mine (only 250 ever made) I suggest looking elsewhere. I do not feel comfortable bringing another guitar here. Whether it was worth $25 or $25,000. I like these guys... but I wish they would have shown me and my guitar more respect. (RESPONSE TO COMPANY COMMENT) keep in mind when you read the response to this review they called me to tell my pickup was not compatible and that they would install a fender noiseless (80 dollars pick up and install) 15 minutes before I had arrived (I had been in contact with the shop through out the day) AFTER it was already installed in my guitar. As well after the technician working on my guitar had told me four times that the chip in my guitar did not happen in his care I was left with no other option that to believe he was being honest, although I still felt like something wasn't right. After further examination I had found that a whole piece of finish had come off of my guitar and had been glued back on, there is still currently a finger print in the glue on my guitar. And I can say 100% that I have never chipped, then glued the finish back on to my guitar, for certain. The guitar was manufactured in 2015 and had been in storage for the two years before I had bought it (Never touched a showroom floor). I am 100% certain this guitar did not have this chip in when I bought it 4 months prior to this incident. It's a shame that I have to try and defend myself about this whole situation! Even after management reached out to me about my review to try and get me to change it or try to work things out, they still never offered any type of compensation for the poor work done. Only offered to fix the chip that they "didn't" make in my guitar. And to top it off management went as far to say and I quote "the respectful thing to do is call you and talk to you man to man before I respond to your review" in a condescending tone as if he were implying me posting my review before speaking to them was disrespectful. As if they hadn't just shown me the upmost disrespect! Unbelievable. read more

The sales people were talking negatively about previous customers. They pigeonholed me as a little and sharper and said there was probably nothing in the store I'd be interested in. It was 87° outside and they didn't have the air conditioning running. Just not a very good sales crew. They said they do most of their business online, And that makes sense because they're in person sales crew left something to be desired. Will never be back there. read more

I purchased a 50 year old guitar from these folks via the internet. It was a pretty daunting prospect but the staff of this great guitar store handled it with professionalism and great customer service. Janet spent 20 minutes on the phone with me describing the guitar, easing my concerns. The communication was great and the guitar arrived at my home in Austin, TX packed to survive anything. The guitar was better than described and the attention to detail was over the top. Really enjoying lessons at Garrett Park, and especially with my instructor, Paul. I had waited too long in life to get my first lesson, and was worried about my abilities, and if I could figure it out. My self-taught approach had been putting ten or so chords together and working through simple songs. I'm at a much more sophisticated understanding today. Paul has been an inspiration, teaching, guiding and giving me encouragement. Within two lessons, Paul's instruction and direction has worked, and I am even impressing myself! I'm into 9 lessons (a lesson a week), and I will continue, doing things I never thought I could do. And, after visiting Garett Park for 9 lessons, and other visits, I have met many of the staff. Super store!! Every single one I have met has been very encouraging, and informative. I'm thinking of upgrading my 30-year-old starter guitar, and I'll get if from Garrett. I wish I had not waited to start my lessons. Even if my work may interrupt me and lessons for some periods of time, my lessons will stay with me, and will mature in my head, until I get back to regular practice. With Garret Park, and Paul, this has been a life changing experience that will carry with me, and comfort me as I go forward to many years enjoyable guitar playing, and constant improvement.
