Well I was really excited to try the popcorn here, I read a lot about it. But I walk into the store, clearly a tourist who's first time it was in the store, and was treated very rudely so I left. There was a couple ladies, I didn't catch their names because they were rude and I just wanted to leave but they appeared similar to African American decent, or similar background. I walked in with a smile and I was snap chatting the store all excited to tell my 100k fans about it, but my (what could have been) a positive experience quickly went south when those two ladies opened their mouthes (some people weren't meant for customer service). Garrett Popcorn is horrifying stuff. For starters, there is the shockingly bright orange color on the cheese popcorn. But then it gets on your fingers, and that's where the horror begins. Because the orange color stains your skin and everything that it touches. That said, the cheese popcorn is delicious. How could anything this good ever hurt you? As good as the cheese popcorn may be, it shines brightest when juxtaposed against--and eaten with--the caramel popcorn. The classic Chicago Mix will provide a 50/50 split between the two. But that's actually not the best proportions. The caramel corn is quite sweet, and at 50/50 it can drown out the glory of the cheese. The idea proportions are one piece of caramel corn to two pieces of cheese corn. So you need to go in and ask for 1/3 caramel and 2/3 cheese. Thankfully, the clerk at this Garrett's didn't bat an eyelash at the request. Here's the thing though. As good as Garrett's popcorn may be, it's oily, filling, and best in small quantities. The smallest bag looks tiny on the wall. The cashier may try to upsell you to a larger size for just a little bit more money. DON'T DO IT! The smallest bag can easily be split between two adults. You could probably sneak a third or a fourth in on that one bag. A taste is all you need. Too much and the weight of the popcorn becomes overwhelming. Getting through a larger bag is an ordeal. And God help you if your bag lingers for a few hours. Nothing will taste as good as those first few bites. It's better to leave wanting more, than to make yourself sick of this rare and delicious treat. My hope is that people will read this and learn from my mistakes. And don't forget to pick up some extra hand wipes. Even careful eaters will need them to try and rub that orange grease off their grimy paws. It's like the food lovers version of a hickey. The popcorn here is fine--it's the same as the popcorn at any other Garrett's. However, the service here is lousy. I was in on Tuesday 3/27/2024 at about 11am, and the female worker was having issues with the doors and the general flow of the customers. The line I encountered was only designed to go one way, but for whatever reason, she decided it was best for it to operate the opposite way. Garrett shipped it to the wrong address, using her street address and my city name. When I told them about the error, they were rude, and absolutely refused to replace the order. Garrett's is a chicago tradition and a terrific gift. I have sent these tins as gifts for many years. The issue I have is sending tins as a gift. I do not understand why Garrett's cannot put a real gift message included of the box like Amazon and other major retailers. I sent 20 tins this year as gifts and 3 people did not know it was sent by us. It is embarrassing, needing to follow up to ensure someone received it even after it says it was delivered. I was at the Chicago airport recently and saw a Garretts. I'd seen Garretts over the years when in Chicago and always a line out the door, could never justify the high prices for popcorn and today, the prices are insanity. We'll my anniversary was coming up and my husband loves popcorn so I went ahead and got him a tin with a divider and three types, the cheese, butter and salt. It was a $70 tin and this was a normal sized tin that would be $5-10 at Walgreens at Xmas time. Got home to Cincinnati and it was stale. I realize this is a difficult situation when people are traveling and not in the area but I reached out with a receipt and took the time to ask for a resolution, hoping Garretts would make it right. $70 is a ton of money for stale popcorn and by the way, we literally got popcorn a couple weeks later from a gas station in the middle of no where Kentucky that tasted 10 times fresher. As a resolution from Garrett's, I would have been happy with a replacement or partial credit. After a few emails, they asked for the receipt and a picture of the uneaten popcorn. We'll I sent them the receipt but my kid (who does not have discerning taste) gobbled up the corn and I wasn't going to lie about it. I made them aware I was not in the Chicago area and they told me there were no stores in Ohio but only offered me a $15 credit on a future order as a resolution, which I found insulting. So I write this as a possibly obvious warning to anyone traveling and grabbing some popcorn. I dont travel much and obviously did not anticipate an issue with the popcorn. Was a very happy customer for 40 years, as I used to live a Frisbee toss from a store in downtown Chicago. However, I recently ordered a tin to be sent to my current home in San Diego. I ordered the seasonal mix of the chocolate popcorns, cheese, and caramel. What I received was 99% caramel only. I alerted customer service that I was not sent what I ordered, but they only want to give me a small discount on a future order, and not make my order right. I would have been happy with them sending me even a smaller tin of what I had ordered, but they said no. I see no reason why I need to pay again to get what I initially ordered. Garrett Popcorn Shops are all over the city--but there is also one at ORD airport if you have room in your carry-on. Garrett pops fresh popcorn throughout the day and you can smell the butter and sugar from down the street. The classic flavors include butter, cheese, caramel, and caramel with nuts. They also have featured flavors like buffalo sauce. The popcorn most people take home is the Garrett or "Chicago" Mix, it's half cheese and half caramel, a salty and sweet combo. If you are eating it right away they'll give it to you in a waxy bag and it's supposed to last 24-hours. Tins make more presentable gifts and are supposed to last 10-days. My suggestion if you like sweet and crunchy popcorn is to go with the caramel or caramel with nuts because it holds up better. Well, yesterday my husband had a connecting flight in Chicago and I told him to bring me some Garrett's Popcorn and I was so disappointed. It seems like they have changed their recipie.
