We ordered: -one blueberry pancake to split -chorizo eggs benedict -chicken fried steak The blueberry pancake was definitely the highlight of the meal: fluffy, full of blueberries, and not too sweet. My partner said the chorizo in his eggs benedict was a bit dry, but everything else was tasty. The gravy in my chicken fried steak was tasty and my over easy eggs were cooked perfectly. Santa Barbara - Located on the corner of state st- across from the Arco gas station. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and seated! Very Welcoming place. I love that the staff is mixed etnicities and languages- thank you!!! The place is small, clean and a homey relaxed feeling. The staff works as one, so there is always someone aroind to help. The french toast is grilled to perfection and sprinkled with powder sugar. They are yummy! The eggs are cooked to over easy and the yolk is runny yet not globby! We stopped by this little café after a long drive from up north, and it was absolutely adorable. They had Mickey Mouse-shaped pancakes for the little one, which was such a fun touch. I ordered the French toast, and it was exactly how I love it--made with sourdough bread, topped with powdered sugar, and served with plenty of butter. Definitely indulgent, but so delicious! There's parking in the back, though I found easy street parking. The café was very clean and not crowded when we went (Wednesday morning), which made it a relaxing stop. Great service and good food! The place looks a bit rundown - outside and in - but the owners are very friendly and kind. Very basic menu, but I had an astonishingly good veggie omelette, not overcooked, made from real eggs (not a carton), great selection of perfectly cooked veggies). Service was incredible, the lady who welcomed us and served us was very friendly, and kept coming around to give us refills of coffee. The chicken fried steak here is one of the best I've had. The corn beef hash wasn't a big portion, but it was delicious. They give you the option to choose potatoes, 2 pancakes or toast. I chose 1 pancake and toast and they didn't charge me for the toast since I wanted just one pancake instead of two. My lady got the hash browns with her meal so we shared everything. Based on local reviews we took a chance on Garretts for breakfast today. It simple décor is reminiscent of the 60's breakfast counter with a few booths. We were greeted cordially and promptly and invited to sit anywhere in the nearly full eatery. The menu is, as you might guess by the name, simple featuring traditional breakfast faire. While the service was very good, the food . . . very average. Served hot and fast but it lacked any real flavor. The sausage was bland, the country potatoes were limp and tasteless. Good little corner diner for your basic but good breakfast food. The restaurant is small, not pristine, and dated but that was exactly what we were looking for today. A lot of the surrounding restaurants sounded more trendy and that was not the vibe we wanted today. We arrived on a Sunday around 10:30 and there were a few open tables. They also had space available at the counter. We had basic breakfasts of eggs, pancakes, bacon, chorizo, and hash browns. Everything we had was solidly good. I added cheese to my eggs and visually it was unappealing when delivered. However, after just scrambling it all together it was delicious. Coffee was basic but good. This morning I was craving breakfast basics. I quickly opened my handy dandy Yelp app bookmarks and remembered that I've been wanting to try Garrett's for a while now. Since they don't have an espresso machine, I may have secretly gone to Daily Grind for a latte beforehand... I will not confirm nor deny since there is a sign on the door stating "No outside food or drink!" yet it was next to the "Find us on Yelp" decal. Since I'm writing a five star Yelp review, they balance each other out, right?! We were greeted and sat right away; which came as a surprise given it was a Saturday morning and I've seen a queue here on the sidewalk in the past. Melanie was our waitress and very friendly and attentive. I peeked at the chalkboard and saw one of their specials: Blueberry pancakes with two eggs and two pieces of bacon or sausage. I had previously read about Garrett's fresh blueberry pancakes on Yelp so knew they were calling my name and it was meant to be. Word on the street is that they get the blueberries used in their pancakes from a local farmer--perhaps the U-Pick-It farm in Gaviota?? The Blueberry pancakes were pleasantly fluffy, slightly still doughy inside, but with juicy blueberries that added some sweet acidity. I now know why Garrett's is known for them! The eggs and bacon were average, however. The inside of this place has definitely seen better days and could use a fresh coat of paint. However, I like the cozy diner theme with antiques on the walls and stained glass lamps. Lastly, another cool fact is that Garrett's is Asian-owned. What can I say about this little place? Well it was much better than anticipated. We figured a typical local diner with some decent food is what it would be. Walked in and the place is cute, could stand a little updating, but we are talking about food here. So I'll be honest, when walking in you do smell a variety of foods being cooked which peeks your curiosities all the more. A varieties of specials are offered daily and again your taste buds are being titillated wondering what to get.. that's given you are there for the first time. I opted for the blueberry pancake breakfast special pictured below and well my boyfriend got a shrimp and avocado breakfast burrito. (Didn't get a picture, but looked delicious) anyhow, these pancakes were some of the best pancakes I have ever tasted. Not needing syrup at all!!! A buttery taste, not to thick and just totally satisfying. His burrito came with avocado, shrimp, cheese, eggs, hash browns & hollandaise sauce. And the picture isn't here because he devoured it! Clearly delicious. Now for the service. I have to say, the service was outstanding. Definitely pleased and will be making this another one of our go to's for breakfast in SB.
