Visited Garvans for the first time on a Friday night while visiting New Paltz for a long weekend. Decided on the restaurant after googling best places to eat in the area and Garvan's came up highly rated. When making a reservation, there were several different seating areas you could choose from - porch/patio, pub, and dining room. I selected the pub area since I thought the dining area may be too formal. The restaurant is very quaint and homey inside. Since we weren't overly hungry, we decided to share the stuffed pork chop entrée on their specials menu. We also shared a vanilla crème brulee. Everything was delicious and the service was really nice. I also really liked whatever type of complimentary bread it is that they serve. At first I thought they gave us an empty bread basket since I only saw the butter on top, but it was thinner pieces of bread under the napkin. They faked me out! It was so good I asked them to bring a second basket. read more

Garvan's is a hidden gem. This was my third time visiting. The homemade irish soda bread with Kerrygold butter is amazing to start off. The short rib sliders are phenomenal. Melt in your mouth shortrib with caramelized onions on local focaccia bread with horseradish cream. Must get this or the short rib entree for dinner. Both phenomenal. My boyfriend had the duck which was fantastic. The seafood trio is out of this world. The scallops with lemon butter sauce and the risotto with the salmon... made me want to lick the plate. Also came with a crab cake which was delicious. We met Garvan last year when we came, and he was extremely down to earth and attentive and super friendly. His wife makes some homemade desserts. We had the apple pie which was one of the best I've ever had. The main dining room is beautifully decorated and they play a ton of Irish music, very pleasant. The decor outside and inside has been beautiful every time we've been here. Will be coming back to Garvan's in the future! 5 stars!!! read more

I love this place and can't believe we've never been until last week. Like others have mentioned, the service is fantastic as was the food. We started with the salad with a beautiful cipollini onion vinaigrette. Lamb stew and the pasta primavera were very good as well. Love how they use a wide variety of mushrooms. Expect heavy, and please take some leftovers home so you can make room for the Banafee Pie (I guess it's his wife's specialty?) I'm not exaggerating that it's one of my favorite desserts ever (to the point that I'm trying to find a recipe online to duplicate it) Very happy with our experience and will definitely be back. read more

I grew up in the area and have eaten here many times since childhood and sadly service and attitude has gone down hill completely. Even people we know said similar when they went recently. It takes a very long time to be checked on by the wait staff or to receive your order. Staff has changed and the kind people are rare and few. For Mother's Day we came on a day before and it wasn't crowded at all during the time we came. Perhaps two other families sat in the place and one came after us. So- four tables being served. It took 45 minutes to get our orders in and therefore we waited an even longer time to receive the meal. The waitresses weren't friendly... this place used to be so different. Asking a waitress a simple question about the menu or drinks, she looked like we were nagging her for something else? She even complained about us to her coworkers and Garvin when we asked a simple question about the wine. Aside from this, Garvin was inappropriate toward our table and even though we have a long history of coming here and him usually smiling and greeting us appropriately- he started yelling at our table saying we can't ask for special treatment and that we were harassing his waitstaff? It was extremely bizarre and the few people around us even looked confused. What special treatment were we asking for? How did we harass anyone? Even the other families who sat near us could hear our original conversation with the waitress and none of us did anything except ask about the specials and the wine. I looked at the waitress and she smiled, like she was so thrilled that we were being yelled at by her boss? And for what? Asking questions that anyone would ask at a restaurant? It was the day before Mother's Day. You would think Garvin himself would be polite to someone's mother and her family. Especially a family who has eaten there for holidays and birthdays, multiple times for 15+ years! We never had any issues before, but I suppose this is what happens when new people are hired and the place becomes more popular. Other restaurants are much kinder, and also offer a complimentary dessert on someone's birthday. Here they don't offer anything on your birthday. They randomly upcharge a few dollars on certain meals or drinks without telling you too. It's truly a shame how much this place changed. read more

Nestled on the edge of New Paltz Golf course is this gem of a restaurant. Stepping into the place is like stepping into Ireland itself. The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable with a great pub that serves up fabulous cocktails and has an extensive whisky (Irish, Bourbon & Scotch) choices and a well stocked wine cellar. Service was the perfect balance of attentive without being overbearing thanks to our waiter, Gerard, who made the perfect recommendations on appetizers, main courses and of course dessert, the Bonafi (mmmmmm!). The food was prepared and presented with pride, as it should have been. The experience was wonderful and we will definitely make the trip to return! Highly recommended. read more

Just celebrated my brother's wedding at Garvan's this weekend and everything was 5 stars across the board! The atmosphere is cozy and warm in a beautifully quaint old estate. Everyone is extremely welcoming and helpful! We were given hot Irish tea on the chilly morning as we were getting ready for the wedding day. All day was filled with these little comforts! The food was amazing in every way. The wedding couple selected delicious appetizers, from crab cakes to filet mignon on toast points, bacon wrapped scallops were top notch! Salad was fresh and topped with a wonderful dressing that I'd like to bottle and take home with me! The entrees were short ribs, salmon, and chicken Rockefeller, all fresh, filling and perfectly seasoned! We were fighting over the last of the potatoes and gravy served with the tender short ribs. I'd go back just for that dish!! The staff was super friendly and happy to accommodate any requests. Special kudos to Cathy, the catering director, Garvan, the owner, and a wonderful young waiter Gerard who helped set up with a smile and ended the evening still smiling many hours later! He even was able to provide a few extra chicken fingers for my very hungry teenager later in the evening! We were seated immediately. Very upscale. Deceptively so compared to the outside. Our server came over promptly to grab our drink order. Fast forward to food, the clam chowder was spectacular. Got stuffed mushrooms and the crab cake to start. Both were fantastic. Flavors were impeccable. Got the gorgonzola burger with the truffle fries. Did not disappoint. It was a lot of burger. Everything about Garvan's was absolutely wonderful. We made a last minute reservation so got a spot on the patio in October, but it couldn't have been any more pleasant with outdoor heaters and string lights out in the yard. The food did not disappoint. We started with the caesar salad and the apple & arugula salad. Both were fresh and flavorful. For the main we had the braised short rib and the butternut squash ravioli. The short rib fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. The raviolis were perfectly cooked and such a delicious fall flavor. Lastly we ended up getting the two dessert specials of the night which our server recommended and said were made fresh by Garvan's wife. That was the best decision of the night. Stopped here for an early dinner after a day spent on lake Minnewaska. The place had great reviews, had outdoor seating and allowed pets and has their own private parking space- a win on all counts. The restaurant is huge- they have indoor dining, a garden area and an outdoor covered area. There's plenty of social distancing and all the wait staff wore masks. The food was delicious. We got the leek and potato soup, minestrone and clam chowder and were happy with all of them. The truffle fries are great and so is the complimentary soda bread! On to the main course- we got the lamb stew which was hearty and filling and great for a fall evening. The chicken and wild mushroom penne was tasty- the sun dried tomatoes added a great flavor. The vegetable Napoleon is essentially vegetable lasagna- this was the least favorite of everything we ordered. It was tasty but nothing to write home about. Finishing off the meal was Guinness creme brûlée- the flavors were great but I did find it a tab bit too sweet. All in all a great meal. read more

Let me start off by saying the long, string-light lit driveway is beautifully romantic The staff upon arriving was so friendly, welcoming & warm which made the night for us an awesome experience from the jump. We were led through the beautiful building (old stone, brick, wood beams) into the back outdoor seating area which was a romantic little courtyard with tremendous trees illuminated with more string lights. The tables were cute and chairs were actually quite comfortable. The vibe made me want to dance in my sundress to Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me" all night. Seriously, the fireflies dancing around us while we ate was very sweet. It was exactly what we had hoped for during our stay in the Hudson Valley. Our server, Ronnel, was bright & cheery & made us feel welcomed again. The bread brought out to us was delicious, and our appetizer came out promptly (we got the seared scallops). The scallops were TO DIE FOR and the risotto they were served with was incredible, but not too heavy. My fiancée ordered the Lobster Ravioli and I had the shrimp scampi. Both were generous portions but the flavors were spot on. I wish we had saved enough room for dessert, but I know we will be back & next time we'll be sure to give it a try! read more

I hate to leave a bad review but feel this is needed and I hope the manager will read this as constructive criticism. I am shocked by the difference between the reviews of this restaurant and our experience. As someone who used to work at a restaurant, I can tell where the problems lie. At this restaurant, it was everywhere. The restaurant is listed as a gastropub but it's far from it. This is overpriced "fine dining". We had dinner here on a Saturday night. My gin cocktail tasted like soap, which the server was happy to switch out for wine (20 min later after asking the busboy to find her). My boyfriend got a glass of whiskey which was overcharged by $4 compared to what was listed in the menu (it wasn't worth finding the sever to complain about). For dinner, we had the scallops over risotto and the chicken and wild mushroom pasta dish. Our food was overly salty- which I get salt=flavor but this was way too much. For the entree prices I expect better quality food and flavoring. Our server never came to check on anything. The only time she came over was when we asked the busboy to find her. Overall, we were very disappointed with this restaurant and hope they can improve. read more

This is the rare place where a 5 star rating feels too basic. 10 stars Service by Jake: fantastic! His explanation of why this Guinness on tap is the best in the US was passionate and interesting! This place is a little in the outskirts from downtown New Paltz. Less than 5 minute drive from Main Street . Plenty of parking. Doesn't seem like much from the outside... but when you walk in- there is a very warm country rustic feel to it. Feels like a house.... We happened to come on a night where there was live Irish music with storytelling. The room where his was happening was already all reserved. So you were only able to hear a little from other dining rooms. ( there are several dining rooms) Drinks...I enjoyed 1st one I had " bombadil aviation"..... but then they ran out of ingredients so I had to try something else- So I opted for the " strawberry delight" as my second and I wasn't impressed at all. My company had a Guinness draft and said it was one of the best he ever had!!! Food. I tried the Surf and Turf which gives you scallops on spinach and the braised short ribs which I hear both were some of the top items here. The scallops were seared perfectly , spinach was good and the short ribs was really one giant short rib bone with a whole lot of meat on it My company had just the scallops on arugula and asiago risotto . To be honest - I loved his meal. Scallops were awesome and the sauce that came with the asiago risotto was amazing. Probably my favorite thing here! We shared the Guinness chocolate cake which was eh to the both of us. The staff was super super sweet friendly and attentive . This bar was amazing! The quality of the food and the cocktails were surprisingly good! I highly recommend the "whiskey lean" and the "breakfast manhatten" in that order. Such a pleasant surprise on our road trip! The bartender/waiter Ross was incredibly polite and knowledgable! And we even met the bar owner Garvin who took us to our seats.. And the food was soo good! Pork chop, chicken and mushrooms, scallops, and raspberry vinaigrette salad. You need to get the stuffed mushrooms!. The dessert was also amazing! Completely messed up our reservations and they told us we were wrong even though we had text messages of setting up our reservations. The owner was an absolutely terrible person as the first thing he told us when we sat down was to hurry up and figure your situation out in a very rude tone then proceeded to be horribly rude to my grandma for no reason at all. After this, of course we decided to leave and he followed us out making mean comments and even assaulted my uncle who was just recovering from mental problems. Garvan's is incredible in every way. We split the crabcake, which was sublime, and were delighted that the house made soda bread was served with room temperature butter for perfect spreading. We each had a perfectly poured Guinness, which was a pleasure (like the rest of our meal). The beet carpaccio salad had a dressing that I wanted to lick off the plate! My husband had the rainbow snapper, which was also excellent. We could not resist the special Tunisian almond cake for dessert - made in-house like all the desserts - and it did not disappoint. Moist and served with a little heavy cream it was just right for sharing. The service was just as extraordinary as the food, starting with a warm welcome at the front door by Garvan himself, great table service from Adam, and a nice farewell on our way out from Garvan. The ambience cannot be beat. We loved the flowers in front and on the tables, and requested a table overlooking a circle of beautiful old trees in the back. We've gone many times, brought family, and had lovely experiences. This last experience was not worth the cost. Definitely don't go when they have a pre fixe menu. Promised there would be gluten-free options. There was one option unless you count the burger without a bun. And then you pay 45.00 for a side salad as an appetizer, burger, and slice of gluten-free cake. We were rushed but waited a long time for everything to be served. Made to place appetizer order with entree. As soon as the entree was placed in front of us, we were asked to place our dessert order. My entree had to go back as they added the floured french fries to my plate. My family was pretty much finished before my entree came back. read more

We had a lovely dinner and a terrific experience at Garvan's last night. The food was really good but what set it apart was the service. We were seated near a very loud party of five and we knew we were going to be miserable all evening so my husband asked the hostess if we could move to a different spot and they couldn't have been nicer. We were shown to a quiet room upstairs and our waitress brought up our waters and bread. So nice! As I said, the food was excellent. My husband had the clam chowder and the duck breast. I had the beet and jicama salad and the scallops. We shared a huge slice of apple pie for dessert. read more

We had a very good experience tonight at Garvan's. I have to start with the fact I am a picky seater. I wasn't crazy about the table we were given so Garvan kindly offered me another table and then when I wanted the original table helped me to tweak it a little bit to my liking. Ok so we were seated and had great service from water, wines, Apps and mains. We had the scallop and risotto appetizer, major deliciousness. The scallops were cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. I had the shrimp scampi, it was amazing. Great flavor and plentiful portion. Everyone at our table loved their meals, the short ribs, the prime rib and the scallops.
