Haven't been since before the pandemic. Enjoyed the ambiance and many memorable meals in the past. It's a 60 mile drive from our home and memories of our past experiences had us looking forward to another great meal. Outside of the Guinness (perfect pour) and Guinness chocolate cake (a real treat) the meal was a real disappointment. Arugula and apple salad included four tiny apple slices. Why bother? The lamb stew had a few pieces of lamb swamped in sauce with maybe one small potato and a few carrots and celery. This used to be a hearty meal. Far from it this time. The duck dish was ok but nothing special and we have had better. Sad to say this meal was mediocre and we won't be looking to make a return trip. read more

Homemade tasting chicken pasta (homemade as in you whipped it up yourself as an amateur cook). The creamy sauce is very thin borderline watery, giving the dish an overall bland flavor which was sort of saved by the cracked pepper. However unappetizing as the entree was I was starving (yes literally) and had to scarf it down with sadness in my heart. The cocktails are poorly mixed with a ice flavor but they are a tad strong making you think that makes up for their flavor. The edible goodness was a very sweet salad with that balanced out with the pungent cheese and the perfectly seared scallops. Overall this is a quaint little place relying on their charm. Seeing as there aren't a wide array of food choices this is worth a visit if you aren't going out of your way. read more

This is a 1759 farmhouse turned restaurant. I loved the many different dining rooms and I have to say the bathrooms were adorable . The bread service is homemade Irish soda bread . Hubby and I shared the house salad to start. The balsamic dressing was absolutely delicious . Hubby had the strip steak and I had a bite of it . So good . I ordered the lobster ravioli and it was very good with lots of lobster inside the ravioli . There was only 2 tiny pieces on top so I was eh about that but the dish was so good I can't complain. Okay, as always, if I start a review while I'm here it's either really good or really bad. Thankfully, this time it's the former. Garvan's took me right back to Ireland in all the best ways. From the service before I even arrived to the camaraderie behind the bar to the conscientiousness of all of the staff--this place delivered. Let's begin. Service: I called before I came and was told I could just walk in and sit at the bar. On arriving, to my surprise, a place had literally already been set for me. I was shocked. Every staff member I interacted with--Rob, Katrina... there were more-- were so engaging. I LOVED the obvious friendship between all of them. Rob was the bartender but moonlighted as a waiter and boy did he handle it well. You can tell Garvan's hold a special place in his heart. Food: Spinach Raspberry Salad to start-- you guys that boursin medallion on top? There was pecan in it-- that with the raspberry vinegraitte just delivered. I had looked at the menu before I came and saw Guinness lamb stew and immediately said YES. So that's what I ordered. And oh, did it deliver. Paired with homemade Irish soda bread? Joy. Drinks: I started with the Wife. Rosemary infused rum with thyme and watermelon infused syrup? You guys, I had to ask questions. Followed up with a delicious Pinot paired with the lamb stew. I had originally decided on a bourbon based Zinfandel but Ross had me try the Pinot and it sat better. Bonus: I tried a espresso martini on the house, vanilla bourbon. Gorgeous. No music blaring, and the 4 of us could actually talk, hear each other and enjoy our conversation! The food was excellent! A pet peeve of all of us is when staff greet the table with "you guys." and another is when a different staff brings the food and does not know who ordered what. That is a simple thing to overcome. Where do i even start?! Garvan's is amazing!! My husband and I started coming here years ago and it quickly became one of our favorite restaurants! We have had many dishes on the menu and you can't go wrong with any of them! But the short ribs are out of this world!! We love it here so much that we decided to get married here! Our wedding was this past May and it couldn't have been more perfect. All of our guests loved the food and the atmosphere as much as us. Everything was absolutely stunning! Such a beautiful place in New Paltz! Love what they did to this place. It has a nice historic feel. The food was really tasty and the service was good too. Depending on what you get some of the entrees did seem a bit on the smaller side. The sloop beer on draft was soo good. I really enjoyed the lamb stew as well. My husband got the shepherd's pie and that was good as well. My brother got the burger and ordered a salad as well, fearing he wouldn't be full with just the burger. The salad was small so that was a bit of a bummer. The banoffee pie was delicious. Definitely get it for dessert. read more

First time at Garvan's last night to celebrate my son's 40th birthday and it was amazing! The place is beautiful and the service was outstanding. The food was exquisite. My husband and I shared mexican carrots appetizer and it was stellar. My son and his fiance shared mussels, which they said was the best they had ever had. My husband has the gorgonzola cheese burger, it was delicious and such a huge portion he couldn't finish. My burrata ravioli was awesome, everything was cooked to perfection. This stop was a compete whim after a morning of hiking and we couldn't have been more impressed. Our server, Nicole, was so friendly and helpful. The cottage that houses the restaurant is well maintained and decorated. Very cute with bar seating, dining room seating and outdoor seating. I was so excited to try the food and WOW. We ordered stuffed mushrooms and clam chowder to start - both delicious. My clam chowder was perfect, with chunks of potatoes and celery. For lunch we had the Gorgonzola burger and short rib bahn mi. The burger was cooked well with a nice char and the caramelized onions and Gorgonzola were a great touch. The real star was the short ribs on my sandwich. They were melt in your mouth good and the pickled veggies along with it cut the fat. Highly recommend this place and can't wait to return to try the dinner menu. read more

Ok. Before I go off on a rabbit trail, let me first commend the chef or chefs! Your creations are superb! I don't know how long you braise the short ribs, but my God they're awesome. Short rib ragout the second visit a week later and that one will blow your mind! The desserts are just as unique and awesome as the entrees. Surprised to find this gem in such an off-the-beaten path location. We expected a dark pub and instead found a bright, warm, inviting restaurant with small, pretty rooms, attentive service, and DELICIOUS food. We didn't think we'd need a reservation on a Thursday night but phoned ahead and were greeted by a friendly Irish-accented man who moved things around to make room for the three of us. I love Garvan's so much. The highlights were the calm, beautiful outdoor setting right next to a beautiful old house in upstate NY and meeting Garvan himself. Garvan was super funny and friendly! The best things on the menu are the shepherd pie and the banofee pie made by Garvan's wife. I'm not kidding this was one of my favorite deserts I've ever had. We ended up ordering a banofee pie to go it was so good. The shepherds pie melts in your mouth and is super flavorful. If you don't come to Garvan's you're surely missing out! read more

For the $43 price I thought the quality of the meat could have been better. It was tough and grizzly. In addition, our reservation was for 7:30pm, although the restaurant closes at 9pm. To be honest, although the staff were professional and welcoming and the atmosphere was warm and Irish music was playing, we almost left because of the limited menu. With two kids and a vegetarian, we can be hard to please. Luckily there was a nice kids menu and one of the specials was vegetarian. Turns out, one of the owners is vegan, so there is always a vegetarian option. For me it was the shepherdess pie, made like their classic shepherds pie but with lentils instead of meat. It was incredible! My partner had the traditional one and helped finish mine. He found mine to be superior. The kids had several options from pasta or sliders to chicken fingers. Our server was kind and accommodating. This was the perfect place to decompress and have a fantastic meal after driving for several hours. Last Saturday my Son and I had lunch at Garvan's. It is basically an Irish pub in an old farmhouse. When we arrived, the restaurant was only half full, but, since we didn't have reservations, the owner made a big deal out of "finding a table for us." I guess that is part of the hype. This place is nicely restored and very pleasant. There are 3 dining areas and a bar area. We were seated in one of the small rooms although the main dining area was empty. I was a little disappointed to find that, in such a lovely setting, it was just basic Irish fare, which I can do better with at an Irish pub in NYC. We both ordered a beer. My Son ordered a dark beer, which he liked, and I ordered a brown ale which was just ok. Foodwise my Son ordered bangers & mash, which he enjoyed, and I ordered Shepherds pie. It was okay, but lacking in enough vegetables. I've definitely had better. My 4 stars are based more upon the atmosphere than the food. It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't great. The service was excellent. The waiters were very efficient. Overall I enjoyed the experience, but don't intend to return. read more

Cute place. We almost turned away when we realized they were on a golf course which has been hit or miss for us - more miss. Reservations are suggested. I ordered the Arugula Apple Salad with chicken. It was tiny! And had onions which didn't go. My husband ordered the shrimp scampi with linguine. There were 8 fresh and tasty shrimp. That we good but the rest of just butter on linguine there was no other flavor no wine, garlic, lemon, just a bit of parsley and a stick of butter . He wanted red pepper flacks but the waiter didn't come by to ask how everything was or if we needed anything my water was empty and left that way for 15 minutes until the waiter who was training someone finally came by. We had to flag him down for dessert menus (I was still hungry after the salad). We ordered the NY cheese cake and apple pie a la mode. Both were ok. The walnuts in the apple pie was a nice touch but was a flavor (almost like rind that didn't go) and it was a bit over cooked. And the waiter - my gosh! We had the card ready but he had someone else drop dessert at our table after a long wait because he seems to have forgotten about it. Before it was delivered he almost walked in the room, saw us - must have remembered our dessert and turned away. My husband finally chased him down asking for the check and a take out container. The food was ok (not great but decent) the completely inattentive service ruined it for us. The waiter was friendly but never present or there when we needed him. Upscale place for New Paltz - a college town. I wish them luck but with lots of choices in the area we won't be rushing back. read more

We came for lunch on a weekday. Gastropub is probably not the most accurate description, this is more of a kid to upscale restaurant. The setting is undoubtedly charming and our waiter was lovely. This was a leisurely lunch though, certainly not in and out! Scallops are delicious. Salads were simple but very tasty albeit greens portions are on the smaller side. Apple pie is unique (huge) and quite good. Chocolate Guinness cake can be skipped.
