We had Gary remodel our kitchen and master bath. We spoke with 8 contractors for bids. We picked Gary since he had great yelp reviews, his pricing was somewhat in line with others. I have to say that our experience was nothing like the other reviews here. Right off the bat, communication was poor. After we gave the deposit and signed we waited for communication and got none. Finally we texted him asking for start date and he asked if we had started shopping. We had been waiting for him to give us contact for his recommended vendors. We did like the designer at "The Rock Prefab Granite" who worked with us for 2 hours and we found all we liked. Gary works with a custom cabinet maker Randy from @Ideal Cabinets who came to measure. When his bid came in the cost was $8K (30%) more than Gary had estimated because Gary had "missed including a set of cabinets" in his bid. This was already an expensive project, we probably should have canceled the contract at that moment. However we did negotiate to get the cost down to $6K extra. Finally, 6 weeks after signing the contract we got 3 days notice that they would start. Gary's guys came in to demo and did that quickly. They tried to mask of the work area, however, they struggled getting up our wooden floor and ended up having to bring in a machine to do that, and took the plastic sheeting down and did not put it back up sufficiently. The dust was incredible, especially when they sanded to get the glue up. The house was literally a cloud of dust with little attempt to keep it contained to work area. As we went through the project, there were lots of times there was no one really in charge. So resurfacing of walls was done sloppily getting it onto walls we were not intending to paint right away. The person in charge of the team was great when he was there, but that was not all of the time and Gary was rarely there. So unlike other raters that commented that he gave them feedback and ideas and detail this did not happen for us. The subs he brought in to tile were great and detail oriented, but Gary had under ordered our tile for both our bathroom and kitchen so work stopped while we waited for more. We were charged for "expedited shipping", but expedited shipping ended up still taking a week. This happened twice. Again, with an increase in cost because of under measuring. Each time this meant a halt in tiling, and that the tiler went to another job. The cabinets are beautiful, but again, not measured correctly and a big error in a corner cabinet measurement which meant 4 attempts to get "magic cabinets" installed (different yelp review). One of the worst problems was that the subs often came to us asking questions we couldn't answer, we aren't experts and needed some guidance. For example the cabinet subcontractor made the refrigerator enclosure too small. He claimed that he made it "to spec" but the refrigerator hits the walls on both when installed and had to be forced into the inclosure scratching up the cabinets. if we tried to get guidance from Gary it always engendered a delay. In the past we had done a loft addition and that contractor was there every day to oversee the work answer questions and make sure things were cleaned up after each day. Gary basically only came by the house to collect checks, and sometimes didn't even come by then and had us give checks to his employees. In the end, in coming to get the last check, he didn't even come in to see the final project. Got his check and left. Another serious problem for us was that the wording of the contract was ambiguous. If you use him be careful that you understand correctly what is extra and has to be paid directly to his subcontractors. I guess this was partly our fault. We thought we understood what was included but need up paying other subcontractors thousands of dollars that we thought was included in Gary's contract. With our other renovations (both interior and exterior) the contract was clear and we didn't have completely unexpected charges. In the end the total for the renovation ended up being %30 more than Gary's initial estimate. It would also be a good idea to get the duration of the work included with the contract with penalties for delays. The end product was beautiful so there is that, but there were several things that really detracted from the final product. We would say that if you use Gary you should have your own project manager/designer to check measurements and go over the contract and give you realistic estimates of cost. In the end we could probably have gotten a better result for less cost from one of the other contractors that we had do estimates. read more

I love my new kitchen!! We just finished a big kitchen and guest bathroom remodeling project with Gary Faith Construction and could not be more pleased. If I could give him 10 stars, I would. Our house was an ugly duckling, with a 1980s floor plan that consisted of a tiny disjointed kitchen, separated from the rest of the house. The bathroom had a tub so tiny, it was practically unusable. The fixtures were dated and tired looking. It was overdue for a change but we were reluctant to start such a project, thinking it would be overwhelming. We were newcomers to the construction realm so we weren't sure where to begin. We started with a business that only wanted to replace our cabinetry but we felt our house needed more drastic measures. We interviewed many contractors but picked Gary because he was able to develop our fledgling vision and bring it to life. He listened to our ideas and made fantastic suggestions. He was easy to talk to, patient and friendly. Gary had us go to his stone and tile expert, Laura, at the most excellent place, called The Rock, who helped us pick our countertops and flooring. Don't worry if you don't know what matches what, just let them guide you and develop your palette. You will be amazed. Also, Gary works with an amazing cabinetry business, called Ideal Cabinets. Wow! Talk about precision craftsmanship. Our cabinet creator, Leo, was a perfectionist and aware of the slightest detail. Gary also arranged for us to have a custom built shower door, which really brought the bathroom to life. Gary's wide array of crews from demolition, to tile installation, to paint, etc., were always friendly, skilled tradespersons. They were so professional, neat, patient and would explain the process as it went. Gary kept careful watch everyday and kept in touch with us constantly. He was always available if we wanted to talk about something. Gary kept everything on schedule, even with labor shortages, due to COVID. He also kept on top of every part that was ordered to make sure it arrived in a timely manner and did not hold up the schedule. He also was very patient with us and explained things to us, construction novices. He did not get upset when we kept asking him to do more items, like paint the entire house and put in all new interior doors. Gary transformed our our ugly duckling into an amazing house. He opened up a wall that had no purpose and brought light and cohesion to our floor plan. Now I have a huge, beautiful kitchen that was better than I ever imagined possible. And the cabinetry with the lighting in it - simply amazing! It belongs in a magazine! We cannot recommend Gary, his crews and related businesses enough. This review is long overdue! From the very first meeting, we knew Gary Faith Construction was the one for us. After my elderly mom with demetia died, the townhouse was not in good shape, we were planning on moving to San Diego but needed and entire remodel including 2 1/2 baths, kitchen, all floors, paint and completely redesigning the kitchen including switching from electric to gas stove. We didn't even know if it was possible. We were embarrased to have him come out for the initial walk-through because the place was packed with collectables and lots of stuff our mom hadn't gotten rid of yet, almost every surface was covered. Yet he put us at ease, was very understanding and was able to visualize what we wanted and had some excellent suggestions that we hadn't thought of. Gary also has a great crew and resources for materials (The Rock Granite in San Diego). All the vendors we ended up working with had nothing but good things to say about Gary and he obviously has a great reputation which takes hard work to establish and is always a nice confirmation that we had made the right choice. You can tell immediately that Gary not only knows his technical stuff but is a hard working family man as well. It's a great combination for a contractor. The townhouse was transformed from a dated place into a beautiful updated sleek home which is exactly what we wanted. Gary Faith- I'll start from the very beginning: We have an old condo from 1970's that has never been updated. We wanted to find a good, reliable contractor to help us with our project and spoke to 6 or 7 other contractors/companies. From the very beginning Gary had the best communication, replying immediately. He was fair priced. Not the cheapest, but far from the most expensive quote that we were given. The contract he drafted was honest, through, detailed and returned quickly. Compared to other contractors who were unreliable, cheaper but had hidden fees, and sometimes never showed up for initial meetings. From the start Gary was organized and reliable, and really set the scene for the next few months. Our first meeting, Gary was personable, professional and 15 minutes early waiting for us at our site. He gave us professional and sound advice when it came to the remodel. For example, recommending a galley style kitchen rather than having a counter blocking the kitchen entrance. He has such an optimistic, "can do" attitude that really gave us a sense of security for an overwhelming project. Over the next few months, Gary continued to be just as professional and wonderful as the day we met him. He sent us regular updates on the project and was even ahead of schedule at certain points. The connections he has and people that he works with were just as fabulous. From the cabinets, to the tile, railing, and shower glass company, Gary and his entire team was able to mold our vision of the remodel and bring it to life. Every company that Gary referred us to spoke wonders about him as well, his work ethic and honesty in not marking up any materials. The remodel work he executed was done with precision and quality. Gary had a high standard that he expects from his work and it truly shows in his product. After months of remodeling, there are only a couple weeks left for final finishings. I hired Gary and his crew last year to to remodel our house from a 3br to a 4br and add a half bath as well as a master bath. It's been about a year and I'm still impressed with the quality and the finish work. It's hard to find a contractor that knows what he's doing, actually shows up and works until the project is done, communicates with you, and doesn't gouge you on costs. He, Chris, and his crew were all super friendly and respectful of the house and kept things as clean as possible. I've had bad experiences with other contractors cutting corners but GFC left me with zero concern. My four year old still puts on a hat and goes around pretending to fix things "like Gary." From the moment, we met with Gary, we could tell that he was an honest, hard working contractor. Gary and team built a 400 square foot addition on our house in 2019. Gary's price was very competitive, he stayed on budget and on time (actually finished a tad earlier than expected), and we are extremely happy with the addition. He was there on time every day and was very communicative. We had a six month old and 3 year old at the time and the team was very respectful about that and helped us to keep our kitchen intact and usable for as long as possible during the process. One thing that happened during the process is that we made a change to one aspect of the project and it was a decrease in cost. Top notch! - We hired Gary Faith to renovate our bathrooms this year, but during the project found significant issues with our aging drains. So, we paused the bathroom work and asked Gary to address the drains. Gary and his team oversaw the complete replacement of all the old drains under our home, and later completed the bathroom work. Gary's integrity, know-how and can-do attitude made him an ideal contractor/partner for us. We enjoyed having him and his crew on the property and missed them when they completed the project! During our house remodel (bathrooms and kitchen, which turned out beautiful and will be reviewed in a separate post), I threw a curveball at Gary. I always wanted a lift in my garage to work on my car hobby. However the ceiling has a height issue preventing the adequate use of a lift. Gary told he me he could address this for me by reframing the ceiling by building a soffit and giving me an additional 6 1/2 inches of lift. Originally I had my doubts. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the outcome as it far exceeded my expectations. Not leaving well enough alone I decided to have new cabinets made for the garage. We recently renovated our whole house I'll start by saying I just wish I met Gary and Chris sooner. It would have been done long ago and would have been done right. They were fantastic. Gary was able to give me a ballpark quote off our first phone conversation as he knows his craft. The bid process was professional and straightforward. The work happened the way he said it would AHEAD of schedule. Yes, I said ahead of schedule. Everything ran like clockwork, inspections passed without issues, project was smooth and exactly what I'd hoped would be the outcome. I had them do significant structural work, removing two walls to leave only a small post, and remove two windows opening a new centered window. Stucco patches outside, complete remodel with flooring inside. We used to be too cramped to eat together or all hang out in the kitchen (we're a family of 6). Now we have breakfast and dinner together daily. I've met too many contractors in the last year, only wish I had met this one sooner. We had a miserable experience with a different construction company and had to abort the job and file a CSLB complaint and take them to court. I was beside myself with the fact that so much time and money was wasted and their work had to be torn down it was so flawed. Gary Faith gave a fair estimate and a rapid timeline for completion, and we engaged him. The difference was day and night- with Gary Faith we had a work team on site at 7:30 am every day. They were reliable, did highest quality work, and were clearly a hard working team that had worked together for a long time, had great faith in Gary, and gave their best. His creative solutions were beautiful and he was there, really present and communicating with me almost daily. The other construction company head barely showed up , was not there a dozen times over 6 months. His foreman was also rarely there and subs came and went like chickens with their heads cut off- not knowing what to do, not having things in place for the next step. To make a long story short we lost $100 K on the first decision, ouch. Gary Faith completed ahead of time, even though he had to even remove the walls from the other guys, create HVAC solutions, demo and rebuild mis sized laundry rooms, level floors, redo the electrical work and more. It is now a gorgeous 600 sq foot ADU and I thank my lucky stars that I found someone with integrity, skill and leadership qualities. Gary helped walk us through the whole process, from recommending an architect, to getting permits, the demo phase, use of the rest of our house during the major construction, finishes and recommendations of where to get the supplies that we needed. Gary is friendly, honest, trustworthy and just does the best job! He thinks about small details that would never have occurred to us, does not leave even the smallest item unfinished and everything just looks amazing! Gary is a really good communicator and kept us well informed throughout everything, and even after the construction. I can always rely on him to answer his texts promptly, address issues or questions and talk me through things I don't understand. While we went on vacation during our project, Gary texted me pictures of the progress and kept us updated on everything meaning that we could relax, safe in the knowledge that we had left a reliable and trustworthy company in our home. Oh and did I mention that I was pregnant through this process and had the baby about 3 months into the major remodel?!? Gary and his team pushed to make sure the bulk of the work was done before I came home with the baby, sealed off our bedroom to minimize dust, and made every accommodation to make sure the finishing stages were not disruptive to the new baby!! Gary goes out of his way to make sure everything is perfect, drops by on weekends to solve problems as needed and is really on top of the whole construction project. Wasted a lot of my time on calls, texts, yelp exchanges then refused to take on the project, didn't even bother giving an explanation. During text exchanges complained I require "too much attention" after I sent him literally 1 text and 1 Yelp message before new year's eve, due to expiring new year's sale, during which I had to get an answer from him on some equipment purchase. One of the worst experiences I've had communicating with a contractor, and I've done a lot of remodeling, a lot of projects. Response to business owner's comment below - January 7, 2021 Almost everything he said is straight up lies, and misrepresentation. I have been in touch with the company for about 10 days, so of course there have been phone calls and multiple Yelp and phone text exchanges. They were necessary and a lot of those exchanges were not even initiated by me - it was Gary, reaching out to me, and it was well before new years eve. There was only 1 yelp message and 1 text sent from me on the new years eve day - the rest were prior, normal conversations which happened over the course of ~10 days and more than half not even initiated by me. There were NO multiple calls or voicemail left by me on new years eve - I made very limited contact and only because of expiring new year's equipment sale. Gary lies about amount of contact, and I suspect the reason he is delusional about 2 voicemails he claims he saw from me on new years day is because he neglected his phone and voicemail, and didnt take any calls and didnt check any of his voicemails for many days leading up to new year. It's entirely possible I have left 2 voicemails total over the course of ~10 days we were in contact, but I did not leave anything on new years eve, let alone multiple ones on same day. Gary is also lying in his comment by saying "it was apparent you and your project would require something we currently cannot provide". I have a straight forward, small construction project and he personally assured me his company has done the exact type of work I need at least 8 times before. Long story short: this crew demolished a crap box and rebuilt a custom home in 3 months, with A-grade city inspections all the way through. Side note - the guy with the 1-star review.... must be a liar. If anything, I TRIED to get the crew to drink beers with me in the late afternoon August heat after a week of back-breaking labor, and they stuck to water and iced tea. As a project manager, I must write that Gary Faith and his capable crew were highly impressive and diligent. From project planning through the contract process through amazingly fast and solid execution of approved city plans, there are no complaints and only praises. A 1951 ranch home that was basically crumbling into a canyon was scraped from the earth, the foundation was completely repaired, and a new masterpiece was expertly constructed in record time. The team is 100% professional, honest and hard-working. Cost was extremely fair. The city inspector was even amazed. The quality of work is off the charts. If there was a problem along the way (e.g. your ancient iron sewer pipe is busted), they informed me, fixed it, and moved on. We now have a brand new 2013-permitted showpiece and still use Gary and his crew for smaller projects when we feel lazy or overwhelmed (i.e. finish what we thought we could do ourselves...). We hired Gary and Chris to remove a small support wall and beam in our kitchen and flush the beam into the attic area and extend the support to different wall. We received an outrageous bid from a previous contractor for over twice as much as what Gary and Chris quoted and they proposed way less time to complete the job. They also determined that adding additional footing support (what the other guy recommended) was unnecessary and would not add to the structural integrity which further reduced the costs. Gary was super easy to communicate with, uses technology to his advantage (calendar invites, texts, etc) and was on time to all appointments. They were able to accommodate our timeline and squeezed our little job in between others on the weekend. They were knowledgeable and completed the job on time and on budget. Had our master bathroom remodel done by Gary Faith Construction, and am totally happy that I went with them. We are picky, and have a LOT of questions. Through it all, Gary, Chris, & team were there to work with us, and make sure we were left happy. The bathroom came out looking beautifully. Just gorgeous. And this includes AFTER the project was completed. As we slowly started getting settled into the new bathroom, any questions or minor tweaks we needed, Gary worked with his to make it happen. The reason I called Gary was because of a review I saw of how courteous he is to his customers. Even though Gary could not help me out he referred me to someone that could handle my situation. I can tell that this guy is not in it for dollars only. He actually cares and this is very hard to find. I would trust his company over the rest simply because he's not only a good guy with a strong character but he does some pretty damn good work from what I'm seeing in his design portfolio. Almost 1 year after our remodel, we had a few minor things that came up (some minor caulking cracking around our tub from our house settling and our tankless water heater stopped producing hot water)-- issues that had nothing to do with the Gary Faith team's quality of work. Gary and his crew recently completed a master bathroom remodel in our home which included a new pocket door, custom cabinets, custom tile work (frameless glass shower enclosure w/custom niche), and recessed lighting. We are very happy with the results! Gary, Chris, Bill and the entire team were the epitome of what you want in a contractor...the bid was competitive/very reasonable, the project came in on-budget, the worksite was clean and the crew cleaned up after themselves daily, their communication skills were great (Gary was very easy to get in touch with if a question arose), the quality of work was good, the entire crew was friendly, great with our toddler, and seemed very honest and trustworthy. The project did take slightly longer to complete than originally estimated (due mostly to unforeseen issues that Gary and his team handled very quickly and without much added cost) and there were a few minor details we were unhappy with at the end of the project but Gary did everything he could to find a solution and make sure we were happy. I love to see all the five stars considering Gary and I had an appointment to go over all the work I needed done on my home and on my property . Not just a remodel but a variety of fair substantial projects that were on the Inspection report and NOT addressed at the time of purchase. I made an appointment to get an estimate for work and also to submit to my attorney because of fraud between the two realtors . Within 24 hours before our scheduled appointment Gary canceled saying he needed to take care of a problem at a job. I requested if there was a time to reschedule for( this was all done by text);...and gosh, just never heard back from him....love being blown off by a company owner you're calling to do a job on your property...at least have the friggin courtesy to say you won't be rescheduling because of your schedule...or whatever....I found a better contractor that does high end work....more along my lines anyway...... read more

Gary Faith Construction- You guys are my hero's. I came to this company about 2 months ago to have some work done in our house. I spoke with Gary on the phone, he was intelligent, knowledgeable and honest. Gary possessed all the traits you want in a person when you are going to go into business with them. Over the phone he actually mentioned a cheaper way of doing the job I needed done, which really sealed the deal and proved to me his was an honest guy. So, Gary and Chris came down to our place and started fixing it up and they did such a great job. I really was amazed to see the progress as it went along. There was was incredible, and impeccable. I've gave solid recommendations to all my friends about Chris and Gary. You guys will really go far. I'm glad to see some honest people in the construction trade, as prior to meeting Chris and Gary I've had some bad experiences. read more
