I always order from Gaters on Mowry Ave. On August 4th, 2019. I ordered two gyros (one lamb, one chicken) without tomatoe and a side of garlic fries with feta. The lady was nice she took my order and asked if it is ok to charge me extra for feta ($2). The order was to go. Once I got home, I found out that the fries were half portion of what I used to get from them, no feta at all...and lumps of tomatoes laying in both gyros. Although I like their food, they need to pay more attention to the orders. So it is more likely for me to return to this place or even recommend it! Thanks, Saad read more

I usually do not leave bad reviews, but today's experience was just something... This place used to have one of the best falafel wraps in town. Stopped by after few months - worst falafel wrap I have ever had in my life. Ton on lettuce and onions, lavash is stale, hot sauce is all vinegar, falafel is so soft I doubt it was ever crisp... Meat dishes looked good at other tables, but falafel wrap - horrible, not even close to what it used to be.... read more

Hi, We ordered Two chicken burgers, dolma, Turkish delight, philly sandwich and chicken gyro. We were very disappointed when we received our delivery from Doordash. We didn't get the dolma, the Turkish delight and one chicken burger. The philly sandwich was good and the gyro was good. I'm hoping the rest of the food would have been good too. Place has declined heavily in the past few years. Used to eat here weekly with my friends, and would even come during Ramadan hours late at night with my friends who were Muslim because this place was that good. Looks like recent reviews were right when they said this place has declined. Food is bland, used to be so full of flavor and spices, tender and juicy meat, loads of sauce. But I recently got a chicken gyro that was on the dry side, didn't taste like much, barely any sauce. The worst part is I FOUND A TOOTHPICK IN THE MIDDLE OF MY GYRO. I understand that they use it to keep the gyro together. But this was literally in the middle of my sandwich, the entire toothpick was inside my gyro. Service was fine, food came out quick. Same ambiance as it once was, but internally the food has declined. Will not be going back unfortunately. read more

Walking over to this little shop I was skeptical because I'm only familiar to my Chinese culture food. As I get closer to the restaurant I was surprise to smell such a delicious scent! Walking into this place, it was really small and it has an open kitchen where you can see the chef preparing your meal! I ordered their garlic chicken gyro! The food took kind of long to make but once I got it.....I was shoooooooook!!! LOOK BOMB! After my first bite I didn't want it to end! Super flavorful and hot. I was so excited to continue eating! FUNGUS on PITA BREAD. What a disappointment, ordered a food from Gaters came home started eating abs found that pita breads has fungus on it. A person who packed the food didn't even saw such visible fungus, what a way to treat the customers. Never going back. Order via Uber eats under the guise of "vegan falafel spot" which doesn't exist and I'm actually concerned that a place claiming to be vegan serves meat. We received Greek salad instead of tabouleh. Which was very disappointing considering we chose this place only because we wanted tabouleh. The falafel plate comes with rice and there was not any rice. My family and I, two adults and two young children, came here during Ramadan for iftaar. Before arriving, I specifically called ahead to ask whether we needed to come early because I understood restaurants can become very busy during iftaar time. I was told that arriving 10 to 15 minutes before iftaar would be perfectly fine and that our food would be ready around the time of breaking fast. Based on that reassurance, we came about 20 minutes before iftaar expecting a smooth experience. Instead, the moment we walked in, it felt like we were invisible. The restaurant was crowded but not chaotic. We sat down and waited while servers walked past us repeatedly without acknowledging us. Eventually, I had to flag someone down myself just to place an order. I even asked directly how long the food would take because we were fasting all day and had two small children with us. The server confidently assured us the food would arrive around iftaar time. That never happened. When iftaar finally arrived, all we received were dates and water. No appetizers, no main dishes, nothing. We continued waiting while table after table around us received their food. Meanwhile, our children became increasingly upset and hungry. Anyone with young kids knows that after a full day of fasting, asking them to wait another 20, 30, even 50 minutes is nearly impossible. Our kids were crying, exhausted, and confused as they watched other families eat while we sat there with empty plates. What made the situation worse was the complete lack of honesty and accountability. Every time we asked about our order, we were told, "It's coming soon." Then eventually the server disappeared entirely for nearly 20 minutes and avoided us altogether. A woman later approached us, but instead of apologizing or taking our concerns seriously, she became dismissive and defensive. By this point, nearly 50 minutes had passed since we ordered, and she still insisted we "shouldn't complain" (in Farsi) because the food would come "soon." That response was honestly more upsetting than the delay itself. A simple apology, honesty, or basic compassion toward a fasting family with small children would have gone a long way. We eventually left the restaurant feeling humiliated, disrespected, and deeply disappointed. What saddened me most is that this happened during Ramadan, a month centered around patience, generosity, hospitality, and good character. In Afghan culture and Islamic ethics, guests are supposed to be treated with dignity and care, especially during iftaar. Halal is not only about the food being permissible. Halal is also about honesty, fairness, respect, and how people are treated. Sadly, this restaurant failed in all of those areas. We will never return, and I cannot recommend this place to anyone looking for respectful service or a welcoming family environment.

We also ordered the Mantoo dumplings and the eggplant borani and a squash bolani. The meal comes with complimentary bread. This is a small restaurant, so get there early. They have a small parking lot which is often full. But you can usually park in the street.

Short Story: 0/0 star review. DO NOT LIE AND MISLEAD CUSTOMERS!!! The last paragraph is the worst part about the order. On Doordash I ordered from a place called "Mediterranean Eats" but then found out that it was tied to Gaters Restaurant as it had the same address. I ordered the following on 2/3/21 and again on 2/4/21: Chocolate Halwa, Turkish Delight, Spinach pie, and Feta Cheese pie as shown on the Doordash menu. 2/3/21: I received a completely wrong order and got 4 falafel gyros with garlic fries and baklava. I thought probably the Dasher delivery person got mixed up with someone else's order. Doordash was able to refund my money and got the food free. The falafel was somewhat bland however I wanted to give the restaurant another chance the next day with the correct items this time. 2/4/21: ORDERING: (Around 12:30pm - 1:50pm) I tried again to order the same items: Spinach pie, feta cheese pie, chocolate Halwa and Turkish delights. Doordash showed it was going to take about an hour. When the dasher delivery person arrived at the restaurant after that time, they did not start the order at all and would take another 10 minutes to make. Meanwhile, the delivery person went to take care of another customer's order and then later came back to my order. When she came back to Gater's, the restaurant owner said they did not receive what the items even were from Doordash so it took an additional 10 minutes to get the food ready. FOOD: As shown in the photos below, again they gave the wrong dessert order (Baklava instead of the Turkish delight and Halwa). The spinach pie is actually dolmas inside of pita bread with tomatoes. That's a creative way to mimic a spinach pie I'll give you that... THIS IS THE WORST OF ALL: The Feta Cheese pie from the menu is actually a pita bread with a slice of cheese. What is that? Is that supposed to be a subtle way to insult their customers? Online photos were very misleading so this can be DoorDash fault too. However, if these food items were not in stock or in the menu, Gater's could have simply communicated that they do not have it and cancel the order. I would have no problem with that. Why did Gater's felt the need to go through the order regardless and give their "creative flair" to food items that I assume they did not have? Someone in the restaurant whether it's the person who manages the order or the cook does not care about their job or the customers. You need to have a serious talk to them. read more

Drove past this place many times before and one night I decided to give this place a try. It turns out that I think this place is such a scam. I walked in and a lady at the counter was taking my order. I told her that I wanted a Chicken Mediterranean place. It was priced at $8.99 and it came with a side salad. So I asked what kind of salad they got. I chose ceasar salad among the choices. And she asked me if that was chicken. I said yes because I thought she meant the plate itself. Then she asked if I wanted to try a meat pie and she kept saying it's very good and it was freshly baked that day. So I said okay I'd try one. And she also repeatedly asked me if I wanted a drink and I had to repeatedly say no. She rang me up and the bill's total was $20.45. I was like "What?" It turned out that she charged me full price for a chicken ceasar salad. Then I said "Wait, I just wanted my side salad that came with my chicken plate to be a ceasar salad. I don't want an extra salad." At the time, I didn't know if that was a misunderstanding on her part or I didn't make myself clear enough, anyway, I gave her the benefit of the doubt. After the correction, the bill was $14.26. I was in a hurry and I didn't put too much thought on the bill even though I still felt it was a bit too much. I thought about the bill later that night and I realized the meat pie was quite expensive. The chicken plate itself was priced at $8.99 and the bill's total was $14.26, and that means not including the tax, the pie was priced at about $4. That was one expensive tiny little pie. Granted, I didn't ask for the price of pie itself when I agreed to have one, but $4? Really... And the chicken plate itself, the portion was so small that I can wrap everything in the hummus that came with the plate and would still be smaller than a Chipotle burrito. And Chipotle burrito would cost me about $6. And I realized that the whole time I was there, the lady was trying everything to jack up the bill. The food itself was just okay but the portion was ridiculously small. And the meat pie, it's stale. I took one bite and couldn't finish it. We're not talking about a 4-star-white-table-cloth-sit-down restaurant here but just your neighborhood joint. With so little food relative to the price, and the questionable sale tactic, there's no way I'd be coming back there and I strongly advise you to stay away from this place. read more

**~~On the Hunt for Fremont's Best Eats Episode 1~~** Came in through the front door and was immediately warmly greeted. The woman running the restaurant was extremely friendly, offering suggestions and explaining thoroughly exactly what was in each dish. Having high expectations for Gaters, I really wanted to try a variety of the cooking, and took up their suggestion of the combo plate. I was even lucky enough to be able to substitute half the rice for a serving of their homemade baba ganoush, something I've always wanted to have. How nice and accomodating of them! The woman (I wish I had gotten her name) felt like a second mother the way she talked to you, and her obvious passion for her restaurant and her cuisine made me feel at home instantly. I watched as the cook sliced the shawarma straight off the rotating spit, something that always signifies fresh meat like it should be. Food came within 2 minutes, on a piping hot plate. Combo plate was a spicy lamb/chicken shawarma served over basmati rice, alongside tzatziki, 2 pitas, a small side salad (cucumber/lettuce/tomatoes), and my little serving of baba ganoush. I've had some good mediterranean food in the past years, but this plate was near the top. -Meat was flavorful and tender, with lots of spices. -Baba Ganoush was very good, you could even see the strings of fresh eggplant still in there. -Tzatziki sauce was the highlight of the plate. Complimented the pita PERFECTLY and balanced the spiciness/kick of the meat. Great with the side salad as well. I still remember the taste even now. There was so many things on my plate, I spent the entire time trying different combinations of every part of my dish that came with my order. Great food, amazing hospitality, and really made me feel at home. It's just one of those places that you don't forget because you make a personal connection with them and they aren't just people who give you food for your money. The food is good but they are not consistent on the quantity it means you don't get what you pay they always try to make you get the extra meat but when u pay for extra you still get the regular so basically the steal from you by charging you for extra which you never get horrible horrible . Note to the owner : Please take this serious so you don't lose customers And please tread your employees the right way so they don't come and go since I always see new faces which can effect the quality of food plus service. I gave this place anther chance and ordered a chicken platter with a side of gyro meat and baba ganosh which costed me $29 + tip around $33 and to tell you they food didn't seem worth 15 dollars the quantity was so bad that when I opened the box I was shocked and wished them to go out of business for cheating their customers by stealing their money . I have gone to Fremont for several business trips. On my last trip which was on Christmas Eve I was pleased to find this restaurant. First off the owner, the guy with the glasses is one of the most friendly people I've ever met, and very funny too. As for the food it is very superb. He suggested that I have the Combo Plate. I took three orders of the combo plate for my co-workers. The Chicken and Lamb were cooked to perfection with just the right amount of spices. The rice, salad and bread were a great compliment to this plate. My co-workers and I enjoyed every last bite of the kebobs. I live in Pleasanton but I will be making my way over toe Gater's often. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. It's real easy to find actually right close to the corner of Fremont Blvd and Mowry. I love their customer service and the food is perfect. 4-5 Stars for the lamb gyro. "0-1 Star" for the barely luke warm fries sitting under a weak light, ordinary, and cold within 2 minutes. Such a small place, do not think there can be a bathroom. A middle eastern woman kept talking in my ear over my food because there were such small area to eat you are right next to the line. Her mouth was within a foot from my ear and the chattering was endless. The cook was very nice. My friend's vegetarian plate was all cold and it was a cold day and they did not have their famous lentil soup even though the sign was out they do! No, would not return. Gaters's platters are an absolute delight! I visited the restaurant on Saturday, January 14th around 5pm. I ordered a traditional kabob plate. The cashier was some little Mexican lady with short hair. She almost made my day until some crazy lady walked in like a bull in a China shop of whom I presume to be the owner of the restaurant. The high strung lady began mistreating members of the staff one by one by cursing at them--yes, in front of customers. I guess there was something wrong with an order. The situation made me feel extremely uncomfortable. I felt it was highly unprofessional behavior deeming it intolerable for any work place or public place period. Today I went there with my fam. Ordered food to go. When I got home The wraps were done very sloppy everything was falling off and meat was cold. But it's not the worst part. Fist chicken in the wrap was RAW. Second, I ordered my 8 year old a chicken kebab plate and they did not grill it and put RAW CHIKEN on the rice covered it with pita bread and the salad soggy like it was made the day before and no dressing on the salad. When I came home and saw RAW CHICKEN in the box I took it back for them to remake the order. THEY DID NOT APOLOGIZE AT ALL. Can you describe a restaurant as serving love? Because, the shawarma made me feel like someone lovingly prepared a meal for me. The falafels are addictive, and the kabobs are kabobalicious! The salad has a perfect beet that makes you want to sing. I only discovered this place because I was going to Big 5 and there was a parking spot in front of their little place next to Kinkos. I was greeted by the wonderful and friendly staff who were more than courteous. I was confronted by a patron who was espousing his theories of politics and one of the guys saved me--chivalry is not dead! I had a disappointing experience at this establishment, starting with a phone call where the employee put me on hold, hung up, and then claimed she couldn't hear me when I called back. After finally placing my order, I was told it would be ready in 10 minutes, but I ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes. To make matters worse, the bread was stale when I got home. The cook always recommends the combination gyro/chicken plate one of the most expensive items on the menu. They try to make you buy babaganoosh and hummus, stuff my grandpa would eat because he has no teeth left. They make you believe you get lots of meat but its an illusion they just cut the meat into smaller fragments. The taste is decent but over priced. I would give it zero stars if I could. I've been going to this place for years and have always sworn by it...when David is there. When he is not there and the crazy lady is there, the service and food quality go ALL THE WAY DOWN! She's always on the phone, she's rude, she's always trying to sell her baba ganoush or Baklava. If I can eat at this place for both lunch and dinner for a month straight and still love the food, why wouldn't you try it? You'll go to a fast food joint and eat some garbage because you forgot how your taste buds will react to real quality food. Gaters will reawaken your senses. I am a great cook myself, and last time I ordered food at the restaurant that was not up to my high standard I left without paying. The 5 star is based on the food alone. Its that good! I always get the combo, and it never fails. For $8.99, it fills me up. If the food was presented with real plates and silverware, people would pay more for it. The flavors of the chicken and lamb/Beef work well together, the cucumber and lettuce salad is refreshing, the yogurt is ties everything together, the rice has a nice flavor and not too oily, and finally the bread is a bonus. Had a great experience at Gators in Fremont! The food was excellent, and the service made it even better. A special shoutout to Chef Aziz, who went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. You can tell Chef Aziz takes pride in his work the dishes were fresh, flavorful, and prepared with care. OMG this place is AMAZING! I've been going here for the past 2 years and the owner Maha is super sweet and friendly she certainly hooks it up. The food is cooked fresh right in front of your eyes, her home made baklava is to die for it's a must try! Even tho it's a kabob hut it is VEGAN friendly which I really like, they have options for everyone from salads, gyros, wraps and even burgers. They even do catering for huge events. All in all, I can't really say that this restaurant stood out above other restaurants that offer similar foods in the neighborhood. While the food were decent, it's really a toss up on whether I'll be coming back or not. I guess we'll see. The prices are fairly steep for what you get so keep that in mind if you wanna give this place a try!

Serious Food Safety Concern…read more I'm extremely concerned after finding a piece of metal inside my toddler's chicken wing from this restaurant. Thankfully, I noticed it before he bit into it or swallowed it, because something like this could have caused a serious injury, choking, or even worse. We get food from here all the time, so this is not me trying to ruin the business or leave a negative review out of spite. I genuinely want the restaurant to be more aware and careful with its food handling and preparation because this could have ended very differently if I hadn't noticed the metal. I would have preferred to contact the restaurant privately first, but unfortunately, I could not find any way online to reach out to them directly regarding a food safety concern. Because of that, I felt I had no choice but to post this on Yelp. I hope the restaurant takes this seriously and reviews its food preparation and handling procedures to make sure something like this does not happen to another family. When we order food for our children, we trust that it is safe to eat, and finding a piece of metal in their food is extremely alarming.
