Hello Wantagh community, I rarely leave negative reviews for any business, but today I had such a disappointing experience at Gateway Bagel that I felt it was important to share. I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel, scooped out, toasted, with bacon and American cheese. When it was time to pay, the lady at the register told me the total was $6.52. This seemed very expensive to me, especially considering that a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich is $6.75. I asked if the price was correct, and she confirmed it was. I expressed my dissatisfaction and mentioned that I wouldn't be coming back due to the high price. Her response was simply, "No problem," without any attempt to address my concern. When I opened my sandwich, I was even more disappointed. As you can see in the picture below, the sandwich was very underwhelming, with what appeared to be just one small piece of bacon on each half. I reviewed this shop before, but after 6 years a revisit was in order. Sadly, my experience the 2nd time did not live up to the first (see photo & diagram please). In short, my bagel was overloaded with cream cheese, topped by an *extremely* and criminally thin layer of salmon - not at all what I was expecting for the price they charge. The bagel itself was good. But if you slap a giant slab of cream cheese on it, how is it possible to taste anything else? For kicks I calculated the ratio as 2:1 bread to cream cheese, 5:1 cream cheese to salmon, and 9:1 bread to salmon(!). But forget the math, bagel folks of America: you deserve better than the lopsided monstrosity that you will be served here. This is my first time ordering from Gateway... I usually don't review a place until I've been there a few times to consider their consistency... but I am so impressed that I feel compelled to review now. I ordered a chicken cutlet hero with avocado and pepper jack cheese. The hero was well proportioned, warm and crispy. The avocado was fresh and perfectly ripe. My coworker ordered a chicken cutlet hero with hot sauce, pepper jack cheese and bacon. His sandwich was deliciously consistent with mine. Despite ordering for deliver with UberEats, the waffle fries were perfectly crisp and delicious. I was pleasantly surprised, I was honestly expecting soggy cold fries. For those who don't know what it is, it's pretty much every option for a breakfast sandwich all in one: Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, etc. Considering the size of the sand which and that it comes with coffee the price is pretty reasonable. Ordered from here through Uber eats one morning for breakfast because they have gluten free bagels. My Mom is gluten intolerant and gets very sick if she eats gluten, especially from a bagel. She was so excited! I ordered her egg salad on a sandwich and checked off bagel. In the special instructions I wrote gluten free bagel. We were aware that gluten free was more money and were surprised we didn't hear from the restaurant for the extra payment. The food came with no note. After eating a quarter of her bagel my Mom said she didn't think it was gluten free. I called the restaurant and spoke to the owner. She confirmed that we had ordered the sandwich wrong, since there is an option to get just a gluten free bagel but not with egg salad and we had written gluten free bagel in the special instructions so they put her egg salad on a plain regular bagel. No call from the restaurant and no note explaining that the bagel was not gluten free. When asked why she didn't call us to get the extra $2 for a gluten free bagel her response was it was so busy. She did not care that this was a food allergy situation and she had put my mothers health and life at risk! She just did not care whatsoever! Do not eat here if you have food allergies! The food always comes out quick, fresh, and correct. The staff is incredibly friendly and kind. I honestly prefer this place over town bagel or any other local bagel place. Their bagels are hand rolled in the back and they taste perfect fluffy and soft. Everything is priced very fairly. I can tell that they really care about this business. Delicious, fresh, big fluffy bagels that have some crisp on the outside! Definitely my new go-to bagel store. They're also a deli so you can order breakfast specials and lunch specials. The only thing is I wish they put just a littttttle more cream cheese on my bagel. I hope this place does well and stays in business because I finally found a place that makes bagels just the way I love them! Hopefully more people find out about it, the way I discovered it was being at the bar next door one night and noticed it. A smart business move would be to do weekend late-night bagels and give the other place in town some competition! I got the buffalo chicken panini, not good. What a sloppy mess. The hot sauce was dripping out all over the place. The cheese was melted all over the wrapper and now in the sandwich. The panini was not even toasted or pressed which tells me the thing was microwaved. This gives the chicken a rubbery texture. Very little taste. This was not a $9 sandwich it was something my kids could have made for me in my kitchen. If your going to have a storefront business then make professional grade products. Ordered food for $12 and when I asked for hot water, the lady charged me a dollar saying she pays $1 for the cup. It's not about the money, it's the fact that she can just fool people. Just say it $1 for hot water. She didn't pay $1 for a cup. When I asked she stared yelling and said she is paying electricity and labor. Go to Starbucks, go to Dunkin' Donuts, don't they run business? They give you a cup of water for free. I guess they are not running business. Absolutely done ordering from Gateway. Today my boyfriend went to get us breakfast. He ordered 2 egg white wraps with bacon, cheese, and spinach. He was charged almost $15 for too wraps. That is outrageous. To make matters worse he gets home with the food and both wraps are missing the cheese! They charged us for cheese but forgot to put it on both wraps, really?! First timer here today. The place was very clean and the staff was super friendly. The food was good as well. I have a gluten sensitivity so I ordered a GF bagel with lox cream cheese and my friend got a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel. My only complaint is that the GF are very small and are $3.00 each (plus what you pay to get on the bagel). My total for both things came out to almost $11.00 it's really rare that delis serve GF bagels, so it was a refreshing nostalgic change to have a bagel on a Saturday morning from a deli. Like I said, the food was good but I don't see myself coming here frequently for a small $5 bagel when I can go to stop & shop and spend that same amount for a pack of 4 GF bagels.
