Service was excellent, the chef even came out and spoke with us several times during our 90 minutes here. The food overall was excellent Particularly good were the crispy Brussels sprouts with maple syrup, vinegar, hot honey and garlic; roasted smashed red potatoes with a dash of chimichurri and garlic; smash burger (double patties of grassfed beef with toasted brioche bun, perfectly carmelized onion, homemade pickled cucumber, Dijonaise); and OMG! Pappardelle Bolognese. The Bolognese sauce was perfect, used fresh tomatoes. Desserts were both excellent: pistachio profiteroles and pot de creme. I suggest get both desserts, deconstruct the profiteroles and cover the puff pastry with the chocolate and whipped cream from the pot de crème. We went in without reservations on Saturday night with a party of 16 people. Probably risky but we took up all the outside tables and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. We all LOVED the ordering process which enabled us to order when we wanted something. Our server was fabulous and he was very engaged with us. Other restaurants in the area had ridiculous payment protocols which did not allow us to easily pay for our individual meals so we were relieved to have such an easy and efficient process. I was overall pretty impressed and pleased with my first visit to Gather All Day. Came early after opening on Valentine's Day. Only one couple was seated when we arrived, so we were quickly seated. Decor is spot on. Would make a perfect date night or meet up. Our server was friendly and quickly answered any questions we had. I know the QR code was an issue for some, however we ordered straight from her. Either would've been fine though. We started with cocktails and they were both excellent and served in the appropriate cocktail glass and not just a generic cup (makes a huge difference). As for as the food, the Brussels were a bit burnt. I love Brussels but these were over done. The seasonal squash was wildly delicious. My butternut squash risotto hit on every level. Would order it again with hesitation. Daughter's grill cheese came with fries and was good (no kids menu so come prepared to order from the regular menu). My wife thought her burger was so so but she's a hard critique. Their fries are top tier. I saw lots of chicken sandwiches which looked quite tasty. TL;DR - Fine dining aspirations (?), Chuck E. Cheese-level service. For the prices you pay, this is a miserable experience. Scratch that, regardless of what you pay, this is a miserable experience. It's as if a toxic VC tech bro thought he had a brilliant idea to revolutionize fine dining by making the experience more like a fast food one, via technology, and came up with this clunker. Walk in to the restaurant and it's a hive of activity as food runners bounce all around delivering food and drinks and lending an anxious atmosphere to the place--even when it's less than half full. We're all familiar with using QR codes for menus now, so that's no big deal, but the ordering system is the major obstacle. The code takes you to Toast's website, where I began a group order for our table. Then, oddly, the person who brought our water begin to tell another person to begin an individual order--this was the least confused we'd be. Have a question about the menu? Looking for a recommendation? Need to ask if something can be prepared the way you prefer? Strangely, you are your own waiter, so I hope you have the answers! Restaurants still qualify as guest services, right? There was no service and we were not guests, we were part of the labor. Which is all well and good if I'm going out to Old Country Buffet or Luby's, but at a place that fancies itself as a fine dining spot with prices to match? One of our party spilled their nearly full drink, and with nobody assigned to serve our table and, oddly, no staff in sight at the moment, we began cleaning it up ourselves. I walked up to the counter to ask for more napkins and someone soon appeared at our table to help the last of the clean-up but never brought more napkins and left our soaked ones sitting on the table. I walked over to a water station and grabbed a chunk of cocktail napkins. We went on-line to order a replacement drink and when it showed up, the runner began telling us about another drink that is even better and sold us on it (a recommendation :) after the fact :( ), only to then find out that it was no longer on the menu. This isn't that person's fault, they don't need to know the menu, they don't need to be trained to serve the guests. It's a process and management issue--the staff are set up to fail at anything more than running food to tables. And then our party decided to try and order entrees and that's where the wheels came off for good. Attempting to order online there was no place to enter comments for personal preferences or notes. So, once again I made my way up front to ask a question about relaying that information to the kitchen and was met by a worker who was snarky, dismissive, and insulting. Again, it's probably not his fault, he's likely tired of having to answer questions that could easily be handled by professional waitstaff. It's a process and management issue. The one positive to this convoluted ordering system is that you can pay and leave without talking to anyone, and so we did. Everything we ate or drank was good enough to make this one of the better spots in the area, but we will not come back. Should the, "people will like what I tell them to like," owner or GM come to their senses and change the guest interaction system to something more inviting and friendly, we might give it another shot. But, then again... We drove back into New Buffalo, sat down in a high-end restaurant, ordered drinks and entrees and were very well served by a person who did a great job guiding our experience--true guest service! P.S. Oddly, not long after my party took a table at Gather..., a couple walked in and was seated, given paper menus, and was waited on by a staff member! Which, to me, clearly shows that they know this system is a problem but think it's only a problem for older people, as this couple was clearly elderly. Stunning build out & design. Really solid food & drink offerings. Order process & service style were perplexing to say the least. 100% of ordering is done through a QR code, you have to complete payment on rounds of food/drink in order for it to come out. They will not accept any modifications to food or drinks (ex: no croutons on a salad to avoid an allergen, they will NOT do that). I just couldn't help but feel that this process makes the dining really sterile/impersonal/ cold. I saw numerous staffers standing behind the bar, not to say they weren't doing anything but there's just no service/hospitality feel with this concept. As a newer & beautiful restaurant, I don't think they deserve a bad review/ score but based on many reviews here- perhaps they might reconsider the ordering process? read more

In an effort, I think, to appear modern and minimalist, the $14 specialty cocktail comes in a thimble. For dessert, there is only once choice - chocolate mousse. While they are attempting to satisfy most diners with a favorite, it wouldn't hurt to have a local fresh fruit option. The Wagyu steak was fabulously cooked, but bland in taste. The Mushroom medley on flat bread was uniquely seasoned, showing creativity and risk taking. Gather seems to have an identity crisis. If it's a bar, crank up the music. We love Gather! This was a much needed addition to the Sawyer food scene. Yes, the menu is a QR code and you order your food and drinks through it. I suppose some people don't like that concept but I found it very easy, especially when it came time to pay the bill. Ambiance is upscale rustic and very cozy. Cocktails are unique, food is outstanding. Several things rotate on the menu but they always the fried chicken sandwich, which is a personal favorite. The self order, no way to ask questions, everything shows up whenever it shows up process is so obtuse and convoluted every meal I've had there has started out with an inordinate level of frustration and annoyance. Unbelievable, we got so disappointed with this place! They make you order online and spend time figuring out group order - Ridiculous - when you are out to dine out. Worst of all, they will not inconvenience themselves to modify anything. We tried to order a simple chicken sandwich for one of the kids but it was an absolute no-go! We even talked to the manager since our kid has an allergy to jalapeños but nope, modifications are not to be honored. I want to like Gather so much. I keep going back...and keep leaving disappointed. Great design aesthetic. Great healthy food options that are otherwise hard to find in the area. Great drinks. I've even moved past the unnecessarily complicated ordering/paying system. My beef with Gather is that the prices for food and drink are not commensurate with portion size. I leave unsatisfied, hungry and annoyed with the amount of money spent. Further compounding my annoyance, there's a palpable awkwardness. Maybe due to the impersonal ordering system that relegates patrons to looking down at their phones and staff wandering around without being all that helpful(?). Staff are variably friendly. I've learned to avoid even benign requests (an extra mini-cup of ketchup) as I've been met with responses like, "only one sauce" and, "no substitutions." Locals want and need a place like Gather. This restaurant is so close to getting it right, but then doesn't. You might cater to Chicago tourists, but you are not on par with a high-end Chicago restaurant. read more

He invited us to eat at the bar, despite our request to sit at any of the available tables then he got rude 'that's just not an option'. When we asked if he would rather lose us as customers or let us sit at an open table he responded 'if you want to sit, sit'. Knowing that he was to have been our server we opted to leave. I decided to update my review after marinating my lousy experience at Gather a couple months and subsequently receiving an aggressive and condescending email response from their management. I decided I had been overly generous about the slim menu options, which had barely changed during the first months of operation when we ordered carryout dinners 3X & the staff got our orders wrong each time. But the in-house experience of the ToastTab ordering system -- even to get 1 drink at the bar -- stymied us from ever ordering from Gather All Day again. The place was pretty empty, w only a small party at one table and 1 other bar customer who left soon after I arrived. I could not just "order" a drink from the bartender and had to go through the convoluted Q code, submit all my personal info, CC info, and tip (!). I grabbed my food and left, only to receive a call that they had botched the order and forgotten something. I should have given them 1 star, except for the nice bartender who hustled out w the missing items. I hope the owner has changed the absurd ordering system. read more

Always excited to try out a new local spot but unfortunately the experience wasn't good. The place has a beautiful design and is very comfortable. The Pappardelle Bolognese is a generous portion and very good. The Harvest Grain bowl was a small portion but delicious. Our table ordered two Half Roasted Chickens and one was cooked perfectly and the other was served bloody. We were told by the chef that the chicken was brined and had a broken vein but it was properly cooked. Needless to say we returned that meal. This restaurant has an upscale vibe and great food, but has completely missed the mark with the self ordering through a QR code. Save that for the breweries that have food carts and allow you to pick up your food at the window. This process has allowed them to neglect their patrons. The food and drinks come out by a different person each round, and you need to be strategic about placing your order or you are eating your meal alone. We really wanted to enjoy a nice evening out, but spent half our time scrolling through our phones instead of enjoying our friends. Suggestion~Keep the Toast payment system for final bill for quick turnover of tables, but hire staff to enhance the dining experience. Clearly you don't deserve the suggested 20% tip if you don't service your tables! read more
