She brought back another cup of coffee but cream looked like they dumped out a d refilled same container! I could see the milk chunks still on sides. Husband went to finish his coffee and ended up with cup of Grounds! Told waitress, she said with another cup? At very least coffees charges should be removed! We've been here at least three times. Sitting with windows wide open and not a mosquito or bird flying in to fuck up a meal. Last time I went their steak salad was delicious. My boyfriend and I stopped here coming home from Chicago for the weekend. As soon as we walked in I had to go to the bathroom so left my boyfriend to get a table. There were two hostesses and one of them ignored him while the other asked him if he was waiting for something... I come back from the bathroom and it takes a good 5 minutes before we get greeted by our server Joseph. We ordered our drinks and he came back to clarify what drink my boyfriend got. Ok... I can understand there were two very similar drinks on the menu. We also put in our appetizer order and our food order after we get the drinks. We never got our appetizer. Joseph also came up to me to clarify what I ordered saying he can't read his own handwriting. After that we didn't see our server again. The food took 30 minutes to come out. My boyfriend didn't get his side of fries. When it came time to pay I had to ask a busser to ask our server for the check simply because he never came back to the table. Waiting for our check took another 20 minutes. Then our server spent a lot of time at another table, looked at us with the card in the book then walked away. It took 10 minutes for us to even pay. The food was fine. Nothing to brag about. My boyfriend got a salad and the menu says they're large portions. This salad was barely enough to feed him and he's not a large guy. We were laughing about it. This restaurant has a lot of potential. Great location. Good building. The speakeasy would be interesting to visit. However, the staff needs training. I've worked in hospitality a long time and I understand that it can get overwhelming. But when you have two tables, you can't ignore one for the other. We will not be back. read more

Casual, open (loud) dining room with a full bar. Sandwiches look massive (certainly shareable). Unfortunately, the menu pictures here don't match the current menu. I was really hoping for some clams casino and frutti di mare. But that's not the menu they have now. So, the sausage franconello was a really good choice, instead. I was hoping the roasted potatoes would be crispy on the edges, and they were at some point. But then it appears the whole dish (all the peppers, onions, mushrooms, potatoes, and sausage) were sautéed together until the potatoes lost all the roasty crispness. And the sausage was excellent. About a week ago I was visiting new Buffalo while on a trip from chicago....i've visited this location before and TBH it wasn't that great to begin with. The food is mid minus at best and service lackluster. However what I experience about a week ago was deplorable and I'll never return to this place, I'd give it negative stars if I could. We arrived on a rainy evening around 7pm and were stonewalled by hostess with an attitude that said "we're short staffed, we can only sit you if you have a reservation" Since when does this place take reservations !? It was empty on top of it. Clearly the kids working at this place run the show, and they clearly wanted to leave work early. When I asked to speak to a manager I was told she was the manager! She was like 17! I regret ever spending money here in the past. Will never ever return. Even if they were short staffed why would you say that? And how is that my problem? read more

This place far exceeded our expectations! We showed up because we thought they had wings Wednesday, but that's only on the off season apparently. We had already ordered drinks so we decided to stay. We ended up getting a ton of appetizers and all of them were so good! We got two different wings, Buffalo and sweet chili, both delicious! Potato cakes, and fried pickles. Sooo good! Amazing bar food. My sister had a burger that she loved, I split the chicken parm sandwich with my husband which was excellent and all around impressive food for such a large menu. For decades, spending summers in New Buffalo has been one of our family's traditions. I remember when this building was still a neighborhood drug store where I'd rent VHS tapes as a kid. Since Sonny D's opened, we've been regulars.........typically dining there two or three times a week from May through October. We've even started entertaining clients in the downstairs speakeasy, where I've been three times this month alone. The cocktails are average, the karaoke is fun enough, and while the food has never been destination worthy, it was acceptable for a small town with limited dining options. Let's be honest about the food.......it's perfectly ordinary Midwestern Italian American fare.......Chicken Parmesan with low-moisture mozzarella, predictable salads, uninspired pasta, and entrées that are consistently... fine. Not offensive, not memorable. "Good enough for New Buffalo" has probably been the restaurant's greatest asset. What happened today, however, ensured we'll never return..... ever After a long day on the boat, we walked in with our exhausted four year old looking for dinner before the town closed down......Instead of even the slightest attempt at hospitality, we were greeted by a hostess whose warmth could have chilled Lake Michigan.....We were simply told that they were "short staffed" and therefore needed a reservation. That was it. No "I'm sorry." No estimate for a wait. No offer to put our name on a list. No suggestion to order at the bar. No recommendation to grab a drink while waiting. Not even the basic courtesy of asking whether we'd like to place a takeout order!!!!! Like, you are losing revenue? Why no to go orders? Hospitality isn't about having a perfect night.....it's about how you handle an imperfect one. Every restaurant has staffing challenges!!!! Guests understand that! What guests should never experience is being handed the restaurant's internal operational problems as though they're expected to solve them......"We're short staffed" isn't a hospitality strategy.....it's an excuse. Staffing is a management issue, not a guests issue. The guest walked through your door to enjoy dinner, not to receive an update on your labor schedule! The proper response is, "We're so sorry......we're running behind tonight. Here's what we can do for you......you can place a to go order and come back and pick it up in 30 minutes" or whatever time...... anything but telling me your companies private staffing issues That's hospitality. She didnt even say sorry! What we received instead was indifference..... I've been paying taxes in New Buffalo for over twenty years.....I've watched this town grow, supported local businesses, and recommended countless restaurants to friends, family, and clients who own summer homes here! Including this one! Never again! In all that time, I cannot recall another business in town making us feel so unwelcome over something that could have been handled with the slightest amount of professionalism. One interaction erased years of goodwill. There are plenty of restaurants with average food that thrive because people feel genuinely welcomed. Sonny D's has average food and, unfortunately, now appears to have forgotten the most important part of the restaurant business: making guests feel like you actually want them there. Our patronage has ended. I've already begun steering friends, family, and clients elsewhere, and I cannot recommend Sonny D's to anyone looking for genuine hospitality. In a town built on repeat customers and summer regulars, that's a remarkably shortsighted way to do business. read more

Would have been better if the oysters were cold and had been properly shucked (oysters were still attached to the bottom shell). The calamari tasted good but had been overcooked, making it chewy. Every time I go to New Buffalo I make sure to hit up this spot. It's really big inside so it's nice to be able to get a seat fairly quickly even when it's super busy! I enjoy their food/ the corn ribs are so creative, the salads are hearty, and if you are craving some italian food, they got it. My favorite part is the speakeasy with live music! Kind, accommodating, responsive. The decor and design of the restaurant are top notch. Clearly a major investment, with lots of care. The music was a disconnect. Been going every time we're in Michigan. It is definitely taking a downward spiral. The food, staff and especially the owner suck. They definitely don't like each other and it shows. Terrible. I brought my wife and kids (ages 10,11,11,12 &18) there. My wife and I got the fish and chips and the fish was basically inedible. We would have been better off going to Captain D's. Then on top of the food being bad they charged us a 20% large party gratuity making the bill $231.14. I would not recommend this place. If there is any redeemable quality it was I tried my daughter's spaghetti it was good and the staff was nice. I guess we should have known better ever other restaurant in the area was over flowing with customers. But Sonny D's had plenty of tables open. Large restaurant with a fous season seating area up front. Food is good and large portions but its over priced. Also in a tourist area as most of the restaurants seemed to be like this with few exceptions. I had steak tacos, with lettuce and some guacamole and salsa in a small sauce container. It was $20 and had no sides like rice or beans. Service was fine, our server was pretty busy but nice. People could probably get better value sharing a meal since portions are large. read more

4 adults went to dinner here. Our first time. We attempted an online reservation from the beach. Our mistake for not checkingfor email confirmation before arriving. They did not have a reservation for us. Kept asking if its under different name, check your email acct. Etc. No to that. After sometimes passes. She then says without a hint of helpfulness Or Gee sorry that happened, she tells us she can seat us. All without one smile. But then we waited another 5-7 Minutes for seating even thought there were many empty tables. Ordered bevs and apps. Fried calamari, pretzel with cheese and buffalo wings. Send calamari back...cold. pretzel was warm, chewy...cheese sauce tasted like warm cheese whiz. A new calamari arrives. Hot, tasty Panko like coating, but chewed like rubber bands. Served with a mediocre Thai chili sauce and marinara. Where was the cocktail sauce? Half the order went uneaten. It was served as a generous portion with fresh lemon slices. Out of these apps the wings were A+. The others weren't great At all. Our waitress was an angel. We all recognized a person with lots of experience, customer service and a sense of timing. She was busy, but kept tabs on the table. Also kudos to the Food runners and busses. Dinner...jalapeño burger, steak salad with goat cheese instead of Bleu cheese (goat was an available option) and Berkshire BBQ pork chop dinner to be shared. New restaurant let's see how good the burger is. Burger and fries were good but nothing extraordinary. 1/2 lb burger done correctly and good fries. Steak salad was a surprise!! An arugula mix with lemon vinaigrette came to the table with bleu cheese crumbles not the requested goat cheese with a petite steak along side. It was a hearty steak salad! Someone in the kitchen realized the wrong cheese was used and did come to the table. That diner said it was ok. Nice touch from the management. Unfortunately the steak was on the rare side for this guest, but she persevered. We all tasted it and it was tender and flavorful. The pork chop dinner came with 2 5oz grilled chops smothered in a bourbon BBQ sauce with onion fries, nicely seasoned roasted potatoes, and a really yummy vegetable medley of thin sliced yellow squash zucchini and carrot Reminded us of a veggie briyami or ratatouille. The pork chop was delicious! Moist. Tender and full of flavor even without additional BBQ sauce. The table consensus was the pork chop choice was winner. Needless to say, but I will, a shared dessert was a necessity. We ordered the bread pudding. Another winning choice! About a cup or a bit more scoop served warm with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream with caramel sauce drizzle. Devoured in a nanosecond!!! And again, kudos to our waitstaff..Susan. When the only good thing the organizator can say after the meal was this place took a reservation on Friday night, you know there were a few problems. The service was average at best. Those of us who got the salmon regretted that choice - over cooked and too much salt. They had no tartar sauce and refused to allow substitutes so I only got the salmon because I don't eat spinach or mashed potatoes. I skipped the salad which was smart. The appetizers didn't even get finished by the group and most walk from the hotel. The dessert was the best part of the meal. Next morning as we were talking about the meal, locals that work there agreed the food was not very good. I think the group will eat somewhere else next year. read more

Little details go a long way... we were so excited to try this new bar and grill in New Buffalo. The positives were: large sports bar, indoor and outdoor enclosed seating, friendly staff and an upbeat vibe with 70's tunes playing in the background. We ordered the Mexican Mule and 55 Chevy. The drinks were tasty, but I would have loved the mule in a cold copper mug on this hot day. The burger was good; however, the shrimp tacos were a bit skimpy although flavorful and could have used a salsa option and two corn tortillas per taco to keep them from falling apart while eating. The burger was delivered without condiments, and although we only waited 5 or so minutes after asking to receive them, it would have been nice to have condiments offered prior to or when the meal was served. The place has a great location on the corner & we kept driving past it while in town each time so we decided to finally give it a try. We actually ended up walking in there for Brunch (which was about an hour after it opened). There was only about 5 other people in there but we were greeted with a smile & they sat our party down. However that's where anything positive ended. I don't know if our waitress just didn't want to come in that day or what but she seemed visibly irritated by everything. We asked for another refill (coffee, tea) but she literally stared at us for about 5 seconds & said, "Yeah...I guess" which internally confused us because the way she said it made us think you didn't get refills on coffee or tea. Then I made the fatal mistake of asking for another condiment because she yet AGAIN paused & looked at me for a few seconds like I asked to be part of her will. Being someone who's worked in customer service jobs, I get "awkward" days but this lady wasn't awkward or having anxiety she was just rude & arrogant, she seemed irritated when anyone (not just us but the table next to us) asked for ANYTHING. This is the first time we've ever left a low tip but this woman was so rude it put us off on wanting to come back to try dinner here. read more

We visited twice, and while the first visit was passable, the second was a complete letdown. On our first visit, we sat at the bar before the rush, and the service was fantastic. The fried pickles were a standout, crispy and flavorful, but that's where the compliments end. The flatbread pizza was a major disappointment--bland and utterly forgettable. Despite the mediocre food, the attentive service made up for it somewhat. Our second visit, however, sealed the deal on not returning. The restaurant was packed, and we were seated near the bar. It was here that we noticed some concerning hygiene practices. We saw bar staff handling money and food without washing their hands, and straws were being placed directly into drinks after touching it.It was enough to turn our stomachs. The busyness of the place did not translate into quality food or a pleasant experience. Given the inconsistency and the questionable cleanliness, we won't be coming back. read more

This restaurant's service was very good. Our server was attentive. My husband and I enjoyed our meals. I had the delicious fish and chips and my husband had the jalapeno burger. The menu had some delicious offerings and it was hard to decide. The fish was flaky and fried perfectly. The tartar sauce was delicious as well. My husband said the hamburger was made with fresh ground beef with delicious toppings. We appreciate the hospitality that was shown during our visit as well as the delicious food. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We had a surprise visit of 10 people and they had the table ready in no time. The food was amazing. At first I thought my pasta looked a little dry but when I ate it, I was proven wrong. One of the best pasta dishes I ever had.
