There's no doubt this is a unique spot. It's small inside but has a very nice enclosed back patio. They were kind to accommodate our group right before closing. We were a little confused why dishes had to come out one at a time but just rolled with it. For my taste, the flavors were over the top. Like the black garlic and chives on the bread was over powering. I had remove most of it to enjoy the bread. Same with the smoked chicken. This was a last minute choice for dinner on a dreary, rainy evening. The atmosphere was quaint old building with limited seating the ambiance was cozy and comfortable. The staff were very accommodating and provided professional explanations for each entree. The food was exceptional. Each made fresh onsite. What a delicious meal! We had a Friday night reservation and were seated right away upon arrival. We tried a little of everything - BBQ carrots, garlic bread, spicy noodles with duck, black bean chicken, and katsu pork chop. Everything came out as it was ready in the kitchen which gave nice pacing. Each dish was delicious and we were so happy with our choices. The standouts were the black bean chicken and the pork chop. The chicken had such great flavors and was so tender and the pork chop had such great texture with a crunchy coating on the outside and juicy meat on the inside. The gin based cocktail was also refreshing and delicious. The ambiance is cozy and dark (in a good way) and the service was great. A must try!!! Last Saturday night, the hubby and I decided to try this place out for dinner, kind of last minute. We didn't have reservations, and the place was packed. Graciously, some chairs were moved around to a little table in the only corner open, and we were able to dine. Everything about this little spot was perfect. From the warm welcome and effort by the hostess to the excellent service by Ligan and a tasty and inventive dinner. We had the short rib tartar, shrimp, bbq carrots, stuffed wings, and Poole. This restaurant is absolutely above a 5 star ratting. I've been a chef for 15 years and rarely am I impressed but wow, the food almost makes you feel emotional. I felt like I was traveling around the world through the flavors. The thought that went into each dish, it's incredible. The staff was all charming and fun to be around. There was plenty time to enjoy each plate in between each other. The flavors are on point. Our server Aaron was friendly and chill, he took the time to explain each dish and gave us his recommendations. The vibe of the restaurant is also dope, good music. We planned a weekend getaway to St. Joe and Houndstooth was a must visit for us. We made a reservation for a Friday evening and were seated right away when we arrived. Everything on the menu sounded amazing! we ordered the Brisket Tlayuda, Paccheri and market fish which was Monk Fish. It was the perfect amount of food to share between the two of us. Each dish had amazing flavor and was personally delivered by the Chef along with an explanation and story behind each item. Each dish was unlike anything we've had before. The Paccheri was delicious and I could easily make an entire meal out of the dish. The monk fish was perfectly prepared - sous vide and served al pastor style. Chef Cheyenne brings out each dish to all tables and carefully explains the dish. The service is outstanding as well, Logan is our favorite! He is attentive and knowledgeable about the menu as well as super sweet and kind. We have tried many dishes and drinks over the past two years and honestly haven't had anything bad. The BBQ carrots are my go to and are a menu staple. They change several of the plates seasonally-- if you go now, definitely get the Branzino. It was amazing and so unique. Crafts drinks were exceptional. Everyone who took care of us was polite and attentive. They have a team approach to service, which I love. Started with duck noodles. Amazing. Perfect noodle texture, medium spice...we knew from one bite this was going to be our best restaurant choice of the week! Next, haystack with cheese on side. This dish blew us away. Marinated tomatoes with a hint of orange, fresh cucumbers. I say good luck to my husband who will attempt to make this at home. The entrees were both delicious. The large piece of flaky halibut is topped with a crusty cracker and lined in a hazelnut sauce. Spectacular. The steak is slow cooked (so you don't order temp, we had no idea) lined in a cream sauce and covered in potato chips. My husband wanted to clap when we walked out but by then it was pretty busy and we just wanted to give them back the table so the next group could feel the love of Houndstooth's food. I would rate it a 4 on the food and 0 on service so that is a 2 in my book. Never, in all of the places we've eaten, from Chicago to New York City to Tokyo and many places in between have we've been told this. We need to get our order in because the seats we were in had a reservation 1.5 hrs after ours. Something you don't want to hear when you are ready to drop $200+ on a meal for two. Ruined my wife's evening. She was ready to walk. I told her to stick it out. We typically take 1.5 hrs at a fine restaurant to complete our dinner, on our own pace. At Houndstooth you need to drink & eat on their pace. It must be a privilege to eat there in their mind. We like to drink some wine first before ordering, about 30-35 min to enjoy a fine bottle of red and use the remaining hour to order and enjoy our dinner. This all started about 30 min after our reservation time and we were just about done with our bottle and ready to order. We were on pace. Management/Owner brought us our entrees and saw I had Yelp opened on my phone. She seemed happy that I was going to give it a review, like all the other 5 star reviews this place has on Yelp, from the "Good People". We said not sure if you would like our review. She asked why and we told her. She was very apologetic and said she would make it right. I think that meant telling the waiter he was wrong in telling us that he was being pressured to get our order in. She did admit to the 1.5 hr time frame to get people in and out. I understand that. Some people are in and out in 1 hr. Some take 2 hrs. Adjust to it. It's all about customer service and that repeat customer. Not us, this was our repeat. We are done with this place. Strike two for us. Strike one was pre-pandemic several weeks after you first opened. We wanted to sit at the counter and was told no, those were reserved. We ate our dinner at a table, took us about 1.5 hrs, and that counter we wanted to sit at was maybe, at best 50% occupied. Took us nearly 4 yrs to make a return trip. I guess that was a mistake. Should have stuck with our first impression. No need to respond to this review like you do on the other bad reviews posted. We won't be back. Lost us. Better restaurant just down the road. read more
