I took my Dad to Gatsby because we've always been close and it was his birthday and I wanted to try something new and fun and exciting for him. It was so much fun! The mysteriousness about it is a greatbuild up. It is brilliantly decorated and the staff is wonderful! I was so excited and happy to see the incredible amount of art that went into the friendly and talented bartender's making their drinks. I'm a person who really cherishes her food and drink looking like art and it was just perfect! My Dad said it's something that he's going to remember for very long time and that really made me feel good. I intend to return again as not only was the atmosphere and food delightful, (sweet Lord, check out the prawns!) but they had a live band with beautiful singer who had a voice of gold and it was just the icing on the cake! Cute spot. But super small. I haven't been there when there was music but not sure I would enjoy it in such a confined area. Though I appreciate the limited time they give you, I also want to enjoy a drink or two with out being rushed, I'm not about to chug down alcohol. This is definitely a spot I'd bring my out of town guests to wow them and to offer up something different. Not my usually spot to go for sure. This place is a fun, classy, and authentic speakeasy in downtown Boise. It's an event going here. Staff are awesome, there's a little stage for musical acts. Drinks are unique and hard to beat. There are a lot of negative reviews from people misunderstanding the dress code. Here's the deal: people go to a speakeasy for a unique experience. The dress code exists to maintain that experience for everyone. It's clearly posted on the website and social media. You can wear your flip-flops wherever you want to in this town. Booked this place given the Instagram pictures and reviews and was a bit disappointed. They do not have "live music" on Saturday nights when their booking platform states that they do starting at 8:30pm. That was the whole reason we went. Then they posted a Figgly Wiggly cocktail with bourbon and figs but then said they don't have figs so while listed in menu, drinks not available. It's cool spot, drinks are expensive and would be well worth it should they commit to live musicians on the weekends. read more

My wife and I visited for the first time last Friday night, Jan 27, 2023 to celebrate our birthdays. While we didn't feel as if we'd been transported back to the roaring 20's, we did enjoy the atmosphere and the many guests who had come dressed in 20's attire. We intend to do the same next time. I'd love to experience a bit more intrigue, authentic feel and attitude, and for the price of the drinks and edibles, a place like this warrants that. I think they're leaving a lot on the table as the saying goes with regards to setting the mood, the atmosphere and intrigue that could be involved. It was fun to watch the mixologists do their thing and chat them up a bit. They seem very busy and pre-occupied with their work. The concept will work for a while, but I fear won't last unless more fun, intrigue, and atmosphere both physical and from the staff are incorporated. Not an authentic speakeasy...yet. But, could be. Suggestions... 1. Know people by name when they arrive and REMEMBER them when they come back. Every time. 2. More theatrics...i.e. gangsters, flappers, bouncers, authentic music, costumes, decor, lighting and furnishings. This could be any bar, anywhere with a couple of waitresses dressed in semi-authentic 10's attire. Make it more REALISTIC. 3. Create an atmosphere of intrigue, mystery...perhaps a bit of "danger." Are we likely to be raided? What IF a staged "raid" on the place was conducted at random once a night and all the patrons had to flee to a secret room in the back to hide? Might folks make a few new, interesting acquaintances? Might it give the staff a chance to show off? Chat with customers? Get to know them? Might a couple of actors be hauled off in a Paddy Wagon right before our eyes for bootlegging? The possibilities are endless. 4. Friendlier, more engaged staff. Good service is EXPECTED anywhere I go...especially when the place is little pricey. ENGAGED staff who know us, engage us rather than treat us like an interruption in their workday, and remember who we are, what we like and how we like it...now THAT will get us in the door every week, and have us be your best marketing and advertising tools! If you've ever been to The Stagecoach Inn...that's how they operate. And the bartenders NEVER use a jigger...ever, to measure drinks. read more

My favorite "Speakeasy" thus far. I have now been to the Gatsby three times since their initial opening. I highly recommend Gatsby, especially when they have live music. The first time I came with a friend and without a reservation. We were seated to the right of the bar in a quiet area that was more lounge-like, this was my favorite area to sit thus far. Our waitress was fantastic, she was dressed in a 1920's style dress and clearly knew the menu. She was able to suggest cocktails based on our likes and dislikes. We did not feel rushed and ended up having six cocktails between the two of us. Every time I have been, we have met the owner who seems extremely passionate about his creation, showing us the boiler room whenever we have asked. Here is my ranking of the cocktails I have had thus far: James Cagney - this is FANTASTIC - comes in a glass hip flask Louis Armstrong- tasty, light, fruity - I was pleasantly surprised by this one Duke Ellington - very lemony and scotchy - very good Greta Garbo - the whisky blackberry combo was very nice Ginger Rogers - sparkling wine is a nice touch F. I'm absolutely disgusted with the treatment we received tonight standing outside in the FREEZING COLD no less. We had booked a reservation for 6, about 3 weeks ago and needed to add just one more person. The birthday girl was disappointed to hear they would be charging her 25 dollars PER PERSON for us "no showing" the reservation as we were standing outside the hideous graffitied entrance. They refused to work with us, or even attempt to accommodate ONE more tiny little 20 yr old girl. It was rude and frankly just terrible customer service. I will not be returning nor would I EVER recommend this establishment to anyone. 1 star is an over statement, I wish them the worst :) read more

My wife and I went here for the first time and had a wonderful time. The experience and decor are awesome and we loved how it feels like you are walking back in time! Our drinks were really delicious. I had an old fashioned and it was one of the best I have ever had. Our waitress was very attentive and was exceptionally helpful in helping us order our drinks. Saw this establishment in a spot on local CBS news and immediately thought it would be perfect for a visit with our sons coming to visit for a few days over Thanksgiving. Making reservations was easy from their website. It was to be a surprise so I wanted to be prepared on arriving and gaining access. A speakeasy is supposed to be secretive and have special access. Everything was described just right. The attire requirements (very straight forward) were very clear. If anything, overstated. I love that this establishment follows the rules they set up. Those that complain about arriving in expensive flip flops and not being allowed access is more than humorous. And, then to complain about it with a poor review. And, lie that there was no information anywhere about the requirements! More and more people think they should be able to do whatever they want. I love when they can't! We arrived and waited for the early people that had gathered to leave to keep the surprise going. Walked around pretending to check out all of the options downtown and then finally just got in the line. We were greeted perfectly and then entered shortly later. The concept was executed perfectly like it was a Disney attraction. The Christmas decor was excellent. Service level was excellent. Of course the best part was the drinks; from presentation to taste - perfection. The drink vessels were fantastic. The owner is a working owner. He was making drinks, taking care of guests, etc. Not sure about the Dolphins, but whatever (Go Raiders!). Very pleasant with his guests, runs a good establishment and is the place you want to spend your money. This visit was a huge hit for our family. We will return and I recommend Gatsby to everyone that likes a quality experience. I can't say enough about the owner that works the peak times, sets rules that are necessary for the experience and then professionally confronts stupid people. Keep up the great work.
