If you're in Boise, you cannot go wrong with a visit to the James. Fantastic drink options. Tasty food. Great view from upstairs.

Great Christmas Eve burger and cocktail! Tasty "smash" burger with all the fixings--and I asked for grilled onions to kick it up a notch. Met the friendly owner too! Tip: From the parking lot, enter from the door all the way on the right side and take the elevator up to the restaurant.

I had a blast up in here! (April 2025) I called as they were opening to be sure they were laptop friendly (coming from LA, not every restaurant/cafe allows laptops). Eric (manager?) greeted me upon entering the restaurant. He either recognized my voice or my backpack gave it away. He was very nice, pleasant conversation, checked in to make sure I was being productive while drinking. The entire staff was friendly, I had great service here with Travis and Sam as my bartenders. Super cute place. I love the set up of bar having both an indoor and outdoor countertop. Both sections were comfortable and there are a few power outlets sprinkled throughout the restaurant. The outdoor patio is nice looking down onto the street side. Plenty of umbrellas to shade you from that harsh sun. THE FOOD Fish and chips: score! These were so good. Cooked to perfection, the fries perfectly salted and crisp. I even enjoyed the Cole slaw Cesar salad: it was a good salad, but not a great Cesar salad. To be fair, it was a side salad, so... Chicken Taco: hard pass. Chicken wasn't seasoned and the toppings fell short. *note; I am from Cali, so our taco standards are quite different. THE DRANKS I just did a Negroni tour and I was not disappointed. The bartenders was doing they thang! *Side note; obviously due to my skin color, I did not have a pleasant experience in all places that I visited in Boise. James Kitchen was a wonderful experience. Thank you.

An interesting concept. The small menu consists of tacos, pizza, and burgers. I would say the drinks are definitely the highlight of this place. I had the Perfect Wife which was a delightful (and strong) margarita and the Carijillo which was a delicious coffee flavored drink. For food, I got the Hot Maple Chicken sandwich. It was very messy and I thought lacked flavored. The Idaho Nachos were pretty good. The service is great! We got seated right away and our waitress Kara was fantastic. I think the atmosphere might be better in the summer as when the balcony is open.

Cute upstairs bar on Broadway! We sat at the bar and the bartender was really nice and welcoming! Right away she told us about happy hour specials! We did not eat but had a glass of wine in happy hour and really can't beat the price of a glass of wine on happy hour! It's pretty spacious and adequate space between bar stools. Anything in the boxes on the menu is on happy hour. I really enjoyed the ambiance, decor, and staff. Keep in mind if you are at the bar when sun is setting some of the seats the sun will be directly in your eyes. I'd recommend going to The James!

I was in Boise on a business trip and fortunately this place was walking distance from my hotel. These guys have great burgers, great salads and a really welcoming vibe with an attentive waitstaff. I highly recommend this place!

A small window in the door opened and we had to provide a password to gain entry. (Initially our large group had to reserve 3 time slots and we would be seated separately.) I was in the first group. We were let into a small area with floor to ceiling bookcases. Of course there was a book that once pulled, opened a secret door to the bar within. The ambiance was dim lighting and groups of comfortable seating areas. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks on the menu. I started with a mocktail that could be made vegan by omitting the egg white. Beautifully presented with a flower design. It was sweet and it was tart. The second drink I got was a cocktail that was smooth with a perfect amount of sweet. My friends got cocktails in their unique glasses. When our next group came through, they were led into a room. After a while, one friend came out to say hello to us. The waiter noticed that we knew each other and told my group to follow him. The room was dimly lit and was furnished with comfortable armchairs and couches. Our third group was able to join us in the room and we were able to mingle seated or standing. The different drinks that were ordered were so cool. A smoky bubble was set on top of a cone shaped glass that resembled an ice cream cone. I had a couple of friends that ordered gin drinks and they were served in a bathtub complete with rubber ducky! This was such a fun and special way to celebrate a friend's birthday! The service was superb!

As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and made to feel welcome. I ordered the Dirty Olive House Martini and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Bardenay is the nation's first restaurant and distillery, serving its own handcrafted spirits. Their house-distilled vodka made for one smooth and delicious martini! Our server, Sabrina, was outstanding--friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. She recommended the fish tacos, and they were absolutely delicious! My husband ordered the burger and fries, and he couldn't stop talking about how good they were. What really impressed me was Sabrina's attentiveness. As soon as she noticed my martini was getting low, she stopped by to see if I'd like another. I figured, "Why not?" I was about to spend a few hours on a plane and was hoping to catch some ! The bar and seating area were spotless, and we enjoyed watching FIFA on the TVs while we ate. Great food, handcrafted cocktails, exceptional service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Hallelujah... finally, a place with live music in the Boise area!…read more We literally stumbled across this place after striking out at a couple of breweries that seemed like absolute no-brainers to have live music on a weekend. Apparently that's harder to find in the Treasure Valley than good beer. Then we found this gem. The Last Call was playing, and they were fantastic. In fact, if I ever get frustrated enough to open my own brewery just to show the Treasure Valley what it's been missing, they're getting the first call. They'd be the anchor band. Great atmosphere, great beer, and--best of all--live music. We'll definitely be back.

The Caesar salad has way too much dressing and the lettuce is not crispy enough. The service is kind of hit or miss but it's a very busy place but sometimes you have to wait 20+ minutes for your check. It's a great time when they host dancing or Trivia, but I would not come here on a regular night nor would I ever order their food. Their drinks are good but kind of depends on the bartender because sometimes they're not made correctly according to the ingredients listed on the drink menu. However, the line dancing is phenomenal, and I do really love their outdoor seating, especially the fire pits in the winter

Within seconds, I received a text that my order had been received, but not confirmed, and to watch for a confirmation text. After 30 minutes, I still had not received a confirmation text, so I messaged asking for an approximate time. The reply stated they were "slammed" and that my order would be ready in about 30 minutes. After another 45 minutes, I still had not received any communication from them, so I decided to walk over to check on my order, hoping that it would be ready. The first thing I noticed was that there were not a lot of customers inside. I informed the server behind the bar that I was there to pick up my order, and she went back to check. When she returned, she told me that there were no pickup orders. I showed her the email with my order number and told her that I never received a confirmation from them. She went back into the kitchen, then came back and said they didn't have my order, but could make it while I waited - about 10 minutes. I reluctantly agreed and waited. When I got my order, I asked for a few extra cups of sauce. The server was put off, as if asked to perform an overwhelming task. Needless to say, I left the establishment with a less-than-favorable taste in my mouth. 24 hours later, I received a text from them that my order was confirmed and would be ready to be picked up. I texted back that this was 24 hours late and to cancel the order. The reply was that their texting service was unavailable, and to call for questions. I then replied to the confirmation email, hoping that would get through to them. No such luck. The reply I received said that delivery had failed - that their email box was full. I will say that the food was good, and that the server was mainly friendly. However, the whole online ordering system needs some serious revamping. I hope that Whiskey River will take this review as constructive criticism so that future customers will have an easier, smoother online ordering experience.
