Tonight we went here to celebrate my birthday with family visiting from out of town, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing overall. The service, however, was absolutely outstanding. The staff was attentive, kind, and took excellent care of us throughout the evening. Service: 10/10. Food reviews from our table: Glenn: Shared the lamb appetizer and felt it lacked flavor and was a very small portion. He also had the flounder, which he felt was a very small serving and only average in taste. He hated the bread. Overall rating: 5+/10, mostly because of the excellent service. Silvana. Had the flounder and felt it did not seem like flounder, was very thin, dry, and flavorless. The zucchini was good but extremely small--essentially one bite. Rating: 3/10. Stephen: Had the $40 redfish plate, which he felt looked more like a lunch portion. He thought the food itself was decent and rated it 6/10, but was disappointed by the size for the price and said he left still hungry. Me: I had the red snapper, which was actually a more reasonable portion than the others and tasted decent. I would rate it 7.0/10. I also sampled the other dishes and personally found the flounder to be very bland. The lamb appetizer, in my opinion, was the biggest disappointment of the evening and I would rate it 1/10. Overall experience for me 5/10. Overall, a rating of 5/10 (average between all 4 of us) mainly because of the services. While the service was excellent, the portions were surprisingly very small for a high-end restaurant and the food did not meet our expectations, especially for a birthday dinner we had been looking forward to with family visiting from out of town. This one is tough for me to review because this is a place that is probably just not to my tastes. It may be fine for what it is which is an expensive French Bistro that's heavy on the gourmet, pomp, and fru- fru. Gautreau's is in an old uptown house that's pretty small. The tables are pretty close together, so it felt a little cramped. It's very nice on the inside and all of the service employees were friendly. We each ordered an appetizer that all range in the 15-20-dollar range. I got a fried broccoli salad which for 16.00 was just broccoli, a few peppers and a vinaigrette. For an Entree I got a Gulf Fish Du Jour en Papillote. I think this meant fish cooked in a bag. The fish was a piece of amberjack that came out looking pretty with a very small side of acorn squash. This cost 45.00. I never order a dessert, but the servings were small, so I go the banana split which is really banana bread pudding with banana ice cream. This was delicious but 15.00. Great restaurant. reminds me of that one French painting with the bartender in glass decoration wise. Small but cute space. Went for coolinary and all the dishes were great. Loved how there was no dessert and was instead 3 savory dishes. Third courses were perfect size to still feel a little peckish but not fully hungry. The pork shoulder was basically fork tender as well and was delicious. The lentils were surprisingly good too. The oysters were okay as I've had better. But still a positive. Cucumber salad was great but they split the shrimp to give the illusion that you're getting more. That dish also came with a hair on it which I guess should be noted, but it wasn't in the food so it's fine by me. read more

Horrendous service which began with the waitress throwing down the bread plate and silverware with an attitude. Then she ignored our table while we watched her drop dessert menus at the large table next to us, then she came back to that table after some time, then she took their dessert order, then came back to that table after some time to drop spoons at their table, all while complwtwly ignoring and and never coming to our table. We left. We don't need to sit there for more than 15 minutes of being ignored. If the food is anything like the service, STAY AWAY. read more

All accolades. I brought my business here for a businesses dinner and the food was incredible. All of it. The broccoli salad is perhaps a hidden jewel on the menu. If I have a small suggestion (too common in dining) is that there might be a beard warning. I ordered the celery soup. Superb! But it had strings of Brie or Camembert cheese that dripped down attaching themselves to my beard no matter the care. Sometimes dining with a beard is dangerous! High end restaurant with a very tacky "dual" service charge added to your bill. We ended up paying an extra $30 on a $1,000 bill, because we did not have $1,000 cash in our wallets. Not certain how to leave a review for our experience last evening because I'm a tolerant diner. I will just say , save your money and dine elsewhere. I would not recommend or return if asked . My pasta Appetizer was flavorless and Bland I did not finish it because it was so blah . My entree ( Amberjack) was overcooked and vegetables ( cauliflower) were cold . I will say it wasn't all a loss, the scallop appetizer my wife ordered was very good, but her steak missed the mark . Lastly, it was so load inside you couldn't hear the person sitting across the table from you . Our waiter for the most part was MIA. Service was very good and the ambiance was delightful. This is a small local place that is obviously popular with locals. The food was good but not to die for. The only real issue I had was they didn't do separate checks. They said we could split our bill three ways, (there were three couples), but that was the best they could do. Since we didn't have an appetizer and only had one drink, our share was substantially more than expected. I mean, come on! They had a computer there and could easily have split it. In NOLA for races at Fair Grounds ...made reservations.... Small quaint restaurant...intimate quite romantic therefore.. Seated immediately & waitstaff helpful as our 1st time here. FOIE GRAS appetizer...combination of poached pears..date chutney & sesame is AWESOME.... We shared our entrees, BLACK ANGUS FILET & ROASTED CHICKEN ...both were cooked to perfection!! Away from the restaurants in the Quarter and situated on a narrow street in an old New Orleans neighborhood, Gautreau's is a small and intimate (for date nights) restaurant mostly. Though I saw a family of six dine here ---so not strictly for dates or proposals. Reservations are sought after because of its limited number of tables. I experienced one meal here and found the food to be very good, the service impeccable, and the owner checks in on each table to ensure that diners are content and happy. I was really looking forward to my dinner at Gautreu's and I was not disappointed. This little gem was comfortably packed with well dressed happy diners. My food was delicious from start to finish. We all enjoyed a perfectly paced delicious meal. My friend and I each ordered the Foie Gras Torchon that was excellent. NOLAChowDown 1 Star! Our experience at Gautreau's can be summed up with three words; boring, dated and uninspired. The restaurant is nice both inside and out, and we were seated promptly. The service was way below standard. Pretty terrible to be honest. As for the food, I made sure to try as much as I could to get the full Gautreau's experience. Salad, soup and three different proteins. Unfortunately, the dishes left me reaching for the bread more often than not. It was a very disappointing, underwhelming experience to say the least. When dining at a "fine dining" establishment, you expect to be blown away by the flavor and technique of the dishes, but that never happened. Below are the dishes we had. Arugula, Heirloom Tomato, Cucumber, Red Onion and Lebna - very small and basic dish. Lebna smeared carelessly beneath a mass of room temp arugula and semi-soggy tomatoes. 3/10 Soup du jour- I can not remember all of the ingredients of the dish, but it was a cold soup with lump crab meat. Flavor was just ok, spiced nicely and flavor profile mimicked dishes you would have in Indian cuisine. 3/10 Red Snapper with Chinese Egg Noodles and Coconut Miso Broth - once again, a very bland dish. Fish was cooked nicely, but under seasoned. Without the coconut miso broth, I probably wouldn't have eaten more than one bite. Poor execution of what could be a great dish. 4/10 Duck Confit with Black Lentils and Chiriboga Blue Cheese caramelized pears and Vidalia onion, piquillo peppers and brandy jus - Im honestly surprised this dish had this many ingredients because it was a black mass of bland on a plate. Each bite tasted of pure lentil. Duck was over cooked, flavorless and dry. If there was any positive note on this dish, it was the crispy skin on the duck. Extremely sub par dish. 2/10 Roasted Chicken with Shiitakes, haricots verts and mashed potatoes - dish was the highlight of the meal. Good flavor, chicken was cooked well and the shiitakes added a nice earthiness to the dish. Pretty good, but not something I couldn't do myself. 4/10 We had an underwhelming, disappointing experience, but will likely give it another try in the future. But for now, Gautreau's is bottom tier. read more

My husband and I were very much looking forward to our first dinner at this spot. We are native New Orleanians, we wanted to support this place and cross it off our list. The Coolinary menu looked delicious. Sadly, the service was terrible and nothing on the menu came out as described. My "imperial Crab Salad" did not even contain crab. I guess they thought I was an idiot and couldn't tell the difference between crab and smoked fish. My husband's Johnny Cakes were meant to have Cracklins on top. No sign of those either.Do not dine here. Such a terrible experience. We walked out, leaving untouched glasses of wine on the table. It must be a neighborhood place where people congregate without caring about the quality of their food. The location is absolutely beautiful. That's the only positive thing I have to say. read more

We have dined at Gautreau's in the past and enjoyed it very much, but it had been a couple of years. We had dinner here last night with my Dad and my sister and her husband, who were visiting from out of town. It was pretty disappointing. I'm giving it 3 stars because the gulf tripletail I ordered was delicious, piping hot and perfectly cooked and my husband enjoyed his chicken. The field pea fricassee served underneath my fish was lukewarm and the kabocha squash served alongside it was undercooked and cold. My sister ordered the flounder and it looked like a hot mess. She barely touched it and said she would order room service when she got back to her hotel. The most disappointing thing about the entire experience, though, was the service. Our waiter took our order right away, returned to pour our wine, returned to deliver our entrees then we basically never saw him again. He didn't check to see if we liked our entrees or to ask if we wanted to order another bottle of wine (we would have but by the time he came back we were done eating). This is the first time we have dined upstairs at Gautreau's and we felt forgotten. Another small note...Gautreau's is a beautifully decorated restaurant and the upstairs renovation is lovely but we all agreed that the chairs are some of the most uncomfortable we have ever sat in. We considered dessert but decided that we'd rather get out of those chairs. read more

The atmosphere here can get loud and boisterous at times and the design is a bit cramped with the maximum number of tables and chairs put into the space. I think this restaurant is better enjoyed at a larger table and is somewhat less enjoyable at a 2 top. They do make good drinks here and the restaurant is definitely a better experience when indulging in the alcohol beverages and having a social experience. I recently made my first visit since the long reigning chef here, Sue Zemanick, departed so the food has certainly had some changes. The beef tartare lagniappe and hamachi appetizer didn't really work for me to start off the meal. Things drastically improved for the entrees with the veal cheeks and red snapper both being outstanding. Reservations would definitely be recommended here and it is certainly one of the top fine dining restaurants in the area while being one of the few hidden away in the neighborhood it lives in. This is not an old line Creole establishment so it does things many of our more famous restaurants don't do so if you want a break from the typical New Orleans traditional food this can give you some more variety. Gautreaus's definitely takes some different spins on food in ways you will not find in other area restaurants which those spins sometimes work for some folks but not others but the ride is generally enjoyable. read more

I truly can't recommend Gautreau's enough. I've lived here for six years now and somehow have not dined here just yet, but that is nothing to speak to the hospitality and service that Katie and her wonderful staff provided. Chef Rob exceeded all of our expectations, providing us with the most exceptional dishes with a flare I've never encountered! And our server Brian lended the most helpful suggestions with a story to tell about each dish. This is truly such a special spot where everyone should spend a night with their most loved, whether it be a celebration or just a night with good company. The staff here is attentive and gracious. Dwayne, our waiter, was a delight and helpful with descriptions and recommendations. This lovely, elegant restaurant was full (mostly local , uptown residents) the evening we dined with good friends. The noise level grew as tables filled up and diminished our enjoyment of conversations without raising our voices. The chef certainly offered unusual plates . Horseradish Cervich was a bit fishy but good. The scallops were done perfectly with delicata squash rings filled with lovely smoked boudin sausage and topped with (unfortunately) chicken liver 'mousse'. Unfortunately this was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a fine dining establishment - they missed the mark on so many levels about 'fine' - except the prices. The 'host' was unprofessional and rude from the moment we walked it - no greeting, no smile, and there wasn't one to be found throughout the evening. Our waitress was pleasant, the woman filling water glasses and bussing the tables never smiled - no one seemed to really enjoy their job at Gautreau's. Then our first course arrived, the foie gras. The combination of pineapple, a frozen disc of foie gras and a form of bread, which appeared to be toasted white bread, crusts removed, and cut into triangles was less than appealing or beautiful in presentation. The wine list, per glass, was less than subpar and the choices extremely limited. It's really unfortunate as they did not take into account, that as in our case, one person drinks white only, and one red, and therefore we were not going to be purchasing two bottles of wine. In addition to the the less than stellar or expected ambiance and experience, there are only approximately 14 tables, and though there was a vacant table (actually several) that weren't near a very large, boisterous, obnoxious table of 6 women, they seated us right next to the table. We know the entire conversation that took place throughout the evening and it impacted our ability to have a quiet conversation. The duck with mole sauce was wonderful and the presentation was unique, which I appreciated. Though our last several dinners at 'real fine dining' establishments, consisted of after dinner drinks and dessert, we finished our meals and departed. I would absolutely pass on this restaurant and will never recommend it. read more

Meh... had to wait an hour after we ordered for the food to arrive and, although the favors were okay, the fibrous braised rabbit, was hard to chew. I had the duck confit to start and it was pretty good. The duck was very flavorful. There were plenty of lentils were perfectly seasoned. I personally wish there had been more peaches but I love peaches and thought if it's in the name there should be more than a few bites. The salad was delicious. It had a slight kick to it and the Parmesan thing was good although it took a minute for the flavor to come out. For my main course I had the duck breast which was amazing. It was perfectly cooked so that the skin had a slight crunch but the meat was nice and tender. The sauce was sweet with a hint of soy sauce flavor in it. The risotto was also really good. For dessert I had the chocolate bouchon which was unbelievable. It was the perfect combination of salty, sweet, chocolatey and nutty. read more

This is the restaurant that has finally taught me to ask "How is that prepared?" First, the host and wait staff were underwhelming. Pleasant, maybe, but welcoming, no. And the service was slow - like turtle and snail slow. Not to disparage turtles or snails. When I asked if they had non alcoholic drinks, I got a shrug and nope, then, I can make you a lemonade or ice tea, and we have soda. I asked for a lemonade and got a glass of watery sweet lemon flavored water. Oh well. So then I ordered the Foie Gras which has now encouraged me to ask how is that prepared? Because had I asked I would not have ordered the cold, salty, somewhat greasy textured circle of pink gelatinous paste I received. Quite honestly, a very unpleasant dish. I then ordered the duck, which was cooked perfectly, but covered in a very burnt tasting cherry sauce, which was bitter and slightly nauseating. Even more nauseating was the picture of the corn smut that the duck was made with. Don't google huitlacoche if you plan to eat any time soon. My husband actually looked it up while we were eating and said, I'm not going to show it to you while you're eating that, which was good because I wouldn't have eaten another bite. Hence asking, "how is that prepared?" before you order. I would hope they would say, "with fungus," and smile politely hoping you don't pursue it. If you do, they should be required by law to show you what it looks like so you can decide for yourself whether or not you want to ingest a fungus that grows on corn and looks like alien poop. I felt very disappointed by my meal and didn't stay for dessert. All in all, I wouldn't return. read more

Went to Gautreau's Thursday evening for the first time under the new management. We had a wonderful experience. The staff was welcoming, the service was perfect. The place was packed and it seemed like people were just having a great time. We ordered the fois gras and duck appetizers and I had the duck entree as well. I recently hosted a dinner at the restaurant for a group of clients. I reserved a private room on the second floor with access to the outdoor gallery. The ambiance, food and service was superb. We were served pre dinner cocktails on the gallery and then returned to the intimate and elegantly decorated room for dinner. A good time was had by all. Oh my gosh. Has to be one the best place to go to in New Orleans. This place does not have any signs other then the building number. As you approach the door, someone automatically opens the door. We were seated right away (had reservations, which is recommended). Where to start. We first ordered the Foie Gras Torchon and Seared Scallops. The foie gras melted in your mouth like butter. The scallop was very hearty and had a really nice sear to them. If I could eat this as a main course I would. The main entree were sautéed red snapper with thai pesto and sautéed shrimp with coconut kafir jus. The thai pesto went very well with the red snapper. Had a really crispy skin layer. The fish was flakey and moist. The shrimp was very flavorful, and they give you lots of it. I thought the coconut kafir went very well. For dessert we got the carmalized banana split and vanilla bean crème brûlée. Overall it was an amazing experience. Great customer service. Amazing cuisine. read more

Hadn't been here in a while and we had reservations for when they opened at 6:00. Great time to "have the place to ourselves" and it be somewhat quiet for first getting together. But then the wine comes and people come and the conversations become more lively and it's not too loud... just lively. The service was great. Very attentive. 4 of us for dinner. I had the chilled cucumber soup with crab. Yum. Crab had no taste so they could have omitted it and reduced the price a bit. Then I ordered the scallop appetizer as an entrée. I highly suggest this way to go. The rest of the gang ate everything from the duck to the half chicken. It was all good. Dessert we split the chocolate torte. My spouse makes a better one. Unfortunately dragged here for a work dinner I had no control over. One of the worst meals I've ever had. Between the party we had fried oysters, grilled shrimp, "ceviche" that was basically a cup of lime juice, an appalling "salad" which was a whole slice of romaine in a disgusting dressing, a flavorless baseball steak, and a piece of snapper that might as well had been tilapia from Walmart. The food and service here was phenomenal. It is a small neighborhood restaurant so cleverly hidden you would miss it on the street if you didn't know where to look. No signage outside other than the name on the doormat. Curtains prevent you from looking in from the street. Inside is a narrow, old traditional room with the back wall lined in alcohol. The guests will all be upper crust locals dressed in Southern finery...brightly colored dresses for the ladies...pin stripes, collared shirts, pastels, and blazers for the men. We were told by our waiter that everyone dining that night knew each other except for us. The menu is very small. They also had a three course COOLinary option that evening that I availed myself of. I had a delicious boiled peanut succotash (a very surprisingly tasty and well balanced dish...also a substantial portion), a gazpacho (nice flavors but not my cup of tea), and a goat speatzle (delicious). My husband had the wagyu which was phenomenal (I will say it was cooked a little over much for the mid rare we ordered but was nonetheless tasty). He also sampled the New Orleans classic cocktail the Sezerac (much like a shot of hard liquor) with a local amber ale Abita (great!). I had two glasses of rose which was good. The room was very noisy due to its small size. Our waiter had a charming NOLA accent and was relaxed, informal, attentive and a bit cheeky :) The staff pitch in to make sure you receive good service with glasses full and the table clean.
