    The concept is that they change their menu every week with something new and seasonal. Kind of hard to write a review in the sense that anyone reading this will not be able to order what I ordered. The drinks I think are more consistent week to week, and if their chili limeade is any indication, are strongly flavored; that must be the spiciest cold beverage I've ever had. What I ate was intriguing: a fairly conventional but delicious salad with feta and toasted almonds, followed by a main dish of gnocchi with ponzu and some Asian vegetables, the sort of fusion cuisine I occasionally try on my own but rarely pull off so convincingly. That menu they're always changing is pretty small, but invariably has one vegan entree. They also release the menu online, so you can peruse it; I've checked quite a few times. Occasionally, I decide not to go because what they're offering isn't to my taste. Other times, I think it looks appealing but it's gone before I can make it in. They are open at fairly limited times. It's a small and very Bywater-infused atmosphere, with tattoos all around and an old wooden vibe. For some reason there seemed to be only one person really waiting tables and it was not a fast service experience. This strikes me as a place you wouldn't come for a quick meal anyway. It's better to enjoy it slowly over conversation while marveling at whatever creativity emerges from the kitchen.

    Top 5 restaraunts ive been to all time. This place is amazing. Its in Bywater in the more residential part so a bit hidden. We thought it was closed when we got there because of the dark iron doors. When we walked in the bartender/ waitress greeted us and we sat down. Atmoshpere is like a hipster voodoo cafe. Low lights and cool paintings and a bit of a mystery magic chill vibe. Very local it seems. And open late to 1am. Get the peach cocktail. It's so simple yet is one of the best cocktails I ever had. So smooth, clean and just the right amount of sweetness. The menu changes every Friday. Though I assume some dishes repeat themselves. We had the meat and cheese platter. It was all very good, with french bread and pita. And some type of spread that I never tasted before. It was very very good. Then we ordered the confluence of amur. It has a lobster tail, scallop and duck on a stick. Everything was cooked to perfection. And the potatoe salad that it came with was delicious as well. All the flavors worked together. The sides and garnishes where just as good as the fish and meat. It was amazing. Those dishes reminded me of Barcelona actually, with the meat cheeses fish and olive oils. Everything so fresh and delicious. Then desert blew our minds. Gwens cheescake was the best we ever had. It was dense, light and flaky and not to sweet. Very creamy and delicious. It had a very moist graham cracker bottom. We also had the choclate ganache desert. Which was some sort of corn bread brownie with date marmalade and chocolate ganache. I never had anything like it. It was so moist and the flavors were great. I would come back in a heart beat. Wish I lived here just for this restaraunt. Its truly one of a kind. And im surprised I dont think food network or a station like that has highlighted them. They really should be recognized more.

    It took us forever to visit for taco Thursday as we've been going for the unusual weekly menu for a few years but so glad we went. Excellent amberjack tacos, taco salad and chicken carnitas. Definitely going back.

    One of the cool things about Suis Generis is that because the menu changes on the regular, I get to update my reviews on the regular! I had dinner here on Friday night and there were two vegetarian options: a house-made gorgonzola ricotta baked pumpkin seed ravioli with asiago-parmesean cream sauce & asparagus AND a Burmese noodle bowl with organic baby bok choi, bamboo shoots & miso-ginger broth. I went for the latter because although the former piqued my interest (and my love for all things pumpkin seed), I figured it would be overkill with the "Fabulous Mezze Plate" (doesn't that sound like something I'd write on my own? But it's their words, not mine) that I also ordered. So much cheese, y'know? While one might think you can't have too much of a good thing, well that one wouldn't be me because you sure as hell can have too much of a good thing when it comes to foods that are rich and decadent. A note on the mezze plate: It is, indeed, fabulous. It, too, changes so while I can go on about how that double-aged Beemster X-O North Holland Gouda got my taste buds in the throes of passion, you may not get that on your Fabulous Mezze Plate next week. You can trust the fine folks at Suis Generis to pick out other excellent cheeses, however. I'm sure of it. A note on the Burmese Noodle Bowl: It's damn delicious. So, if they have noodle bowls on future menus, go for it. There was a ton of ginger in there. Seriously, at least a 3 inch fat root chopped up. I ate it all. I love ginger. A note on Suis Generis' plates and glasses: they make me feel like I'm at a party happening in the late 60s or early 70s. I expect fondue to be served at any minute. I love Suis Generis for the food, but I also just love the atmosphere. I love how at night they dim the lights and throw on the fake fire places and disco balls so that you feel like you're in the super cool rec room of some hip teenager circa 1970. It's intimate enough to be perfect for a date and friendly enough so that you can easily come in and eat alone. 5 stars! And read my earlier review about their Bellinis...

    This place is a total gem! I came here for brunch this weekend and really enjoyed my meal. The atmosphere is casual, cool, and quirky. The server didn't come out to greet/seat us right away so I took that time to really look around the space. I love that the ceiling is made of solo cups! My dining companion and I started off with some $5 mimosas. They were quite small, but I let it slide because of the on point champagne to OJ ratio. We ordered the shakshuka and the pork breakfast tacos. I loved every single bite of my shakshuka! It was absolutely spot on. Spicy, savory, and tangy. I know I'll have a difficult time ever ordering something else. I also really liked the breakfast tacos, the type of cheese they put on top really made it. After seeing that Suis Generis makes their own bloody mary mix from scratch, I knew I just HAD to try it. It was truly one of the best bloody mary's I've ever had! Lots of horseradish, garlic, and pickled things. Just how I like it. The only minor negative thing I can really say about my experience is that the service was a little awkward. But whatever, we all have our off days. After looking at their constantly changing dinner menu I know I'll definitely be back, and soon!

Our bartender offered great conversation and gave good recommendations and descriptions of the various cocktails. I had the Sonnet to my Wife, made with mezcal, St. Germaine, aperol, and lemon. Tart and mildly smoky. I also had the Adding machine, made with tequila, guava, velvet falernum, pomegranate, and lime. A little sweet, a little spicy with a complex flavor profile. I enjoyed both drinks. If not for my husband, I would have stayed for at least a few hours trying the whole menu. So many beautiful cocktails to choose from. They have beer and wine as well, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice. You can get those anywhere. They also have breakfast with eggs, sausage, omelettes, pancakes. Dinner with savory little numbers like smoked bone marrow and braised short ribs with smoked gouda polenta. Salads, grilled quid, pork chops, scallops, various veggies (crispy brussels sprouts, caramelized leeks, charrted broccolini, roasted mushrooms). We ordered Chicken under a brick and Braised Short Ribs for entrees. We ordered Roasted Mushrooms, Charred Broccoli, and Dinner Rolls. The Kitchen fell short in timing as rolls arrived at the end of our meal, and a few dishes were lukewarm at best. When refired, they were very good. ( See above) The meal itself and the surroundings were good. At the end of our meal, the manager and the server came over and apologized and told us they would be talking to the team. When the bill arrived, the manager had comped more than half of our total bill *( drinks, bread, mushrooms... $ 168 to $85). We didn't expect this, but it shows how much they care to make things right with customers. Elysian Bar and Restaurant is worth visiting, and you should visit for dinner or breakfast. ,

The other remarkable attribute of Bar Brine is the service. We had the sweetest waitress and she was totally understanding when my friend sent her frozen drink back because it was more strong than sweet (she's a bit of a wimp oh well). She was also very attentive and helpful with the menu. I love Sneaky Pickle, when during the day there's plenty of vegan lunch options and a bright, sunny dining room. At night, Bar Brine turns sultry, boozy and edgy/romantic. Unfortunately, this is nowhere in the league of the tofu dish and it may be because I don't love rubbery textures, but I found it bland. The grits are coarse and not too flavorful either. Salt helped but I can't recommend this entree. I'll definitely return for doubles on the Buffalo tofu and hopefully will try the tempeh reuben or cauliflower vegan options next time. Also cool because your vegan-dubious friends can order meaty fare here if they don't trust and believe that the Buffalo tofu ranks up there with the best things you'll eat in this town.

Meanwhile, multiple tables became available that easily could have accommodated us, but the hostess was determined to keep telling us we had to wait. To make matters worse, there was open bench seating in the back where customers ordering to-go could sit. I offered to order food to-go so we could at least sit down and get started while waiting, and she told me if I did that they would remove our name from the waitlist because "you have to pick one or the other." No willingness to problem solve whatsoever. She repeatedly said she was "sorry," but her actions showed the opposite. I was simply trying to work together to find some reasonable solution instead of continuing to watch everyone else get seated while our family, including small children, kept waiting. Absolutely horrible customer service experience.

My wife and I visited on our first NoLa trip together about 4 years ago and make it a point to go every time now. Our first time we stopped in for lunch at the bar and had an excellent experience, and decided to return. We came back on the next trip just to grab a drink and a snack before heading down for dinner in the Bywater. The bartender (Chris) gave a bunch of recommendations for places to visit that way, all of which we have done in the past few trips and have loved. But it's this past trip where we were truly blown away. We were in town for JazzFest and after walking back to the French Quarter, we were thinking about food options and decided to take a gamble to see if we could get a seat at the bar or maybe grab a drink for the road before getting food somewhere else. The bar was full when we got there around 8/8:15, but they had a no show and could serve us, as long as we ordered quickly and were ok with the check hitting the table right at 9PM. Given our slightly (perhaps generous) inebriated state from being at the festival all day and being slightly underdressed, we felt this was quite a kind accommodation. With the clear expectations of needing to get our orders in quickly, we wasted no time making a decision on our drinks and a few food options. Despite this need for a quick turn around, at no time did we feel rushed. The food and drinks were absolutely perfect, as they always are. But what impressed us most was the staff. At no point did the hostess or wait staff seem annoyed by us, despite us parachuting in from a music festival and looking like sunburn and poor decisions. By managing expectations on the front end, we never felt rushed despite the need for a quick turn around. They were all lovely, professional, and as cordial as if we were regulars with standing reservations once a week. In terms of atmosphere, it is always perfect: lively and fun for a date night, dinner with friends/family, or just a nice drink before a night out and about. I truly cannot begin to explain how much I love this restaurant and every experience I've had there. The awards and accolades this establishment (a sincere and lofty term Jewel of the South truly deserves) have been awarded are beyond well earned. Restaurants around the country should aspire to provide the quality of food, service, and overall hospitality Jewel of the South provides on a regular basis. It will continue to be our first and foremost recommendation to anyone we know who is going to New Orleans. Bravo! We shall return!

Charming patio, and beautiful intimate interior with just 4 seats at the gorgeous bar and about 6 small tables inside. The cocktail menu is seasonal, and this spring, many were tea infused. I had the Columbina with gin, jasmine tea pear verdita, boomsma and lemon, and my husband had the Jewel sazerac - both exquisite. We shared 5 small plates - the crawfish bread - crawfish inside a crispy, flaky croissant like bread - OMG deliciousness. Then the tufa crudo - so fresh and flavorful, the crab tartlets - fine, but not as good as the other dishes; excellent salad, and the broccolini in a housemade horseradish goat cheese sauce - wow; one of the best broccolini dishes we have had. The carrots looked amazing, too. What a treat!
