I reached my hand out to shake her hand and she looked at my hand and said "I'm running a class right now" and continued to ignore me. Where do I begin......at first meeting Gaye she seemed a bit firm. But when I started taking privates lessons and she taught me how and why things work the way they do its clear that she takes pride in her work. And sharing with other people, well that makes her a very special person. To take the time and patients to teach you the RIGHT way of sewing. She also taught me how my machine can do more then I ever expected. With that knowledge I don't feel lime giving up because she is there. I can also call her if im in a bind. She teaches you everything. Yes, she teaches her way, but why would I want to learn the wrong way of sewing? She takes pride in her work and her students work. She praises us for doing so well. And corrects us when we make a mistake, but I have never felt like I was ever put down or belittled. She is an extraordinary person to take her passion and share with other people. I cannot say that enough. She's not there to show you half @$$, like other big companies. She teaches from the heart. You don't find stores like this anymore. I discovered this little gem about a year ago when I was having problems with a Janome DC2012 sewing machine I'd purchased from Amazon. I googled "Janome" and found the Riverside Janome dealer - Gaye Marie's Sewing Lab. I took my troublesome machine to Gaye Marie's where they answered my questions and showed me what I was doing wrong. I arrived at Gaye Marie's HATING my Janome and left LOVING my Janome. They gave me so much help and were so gracious - even though I hadn't purchased the machine from them. I regret not buying my machine from them because they provide lifetime customer support for any machine purchased from them. -- And to top it off - they were selling the Janome DC2012 for the same price I had paid on Amazon. Last week I took my Janome in for its annual service. They did a great job and I had my machine back within 3 days. While I was picking up my machine, I eyed the Janome Memory Craft 12000. After a lengthy, no-pressure demonstration - I went home to "sleep on it" and went back the next day to make the big purchase. My machine jammed up and I took it in hoping it was something they could fix. They checked it right out and it just needed a new bobbin case. I'm so glad I bought my machines here. I came here on referral from my mom who had my wedding gown embroidered with my new last name and wedding date two years ago. Unfortunately I received absolutely terrible costumer service and felt very uncomfortable the either time. I came to get a denim jacket embroidered for my best friend. I had my twin one year olds with me, I was holding one and my grandmother was holding the other. The baby I had was crying as he didn't feel well. She immediately gave me a dirty look. I took my son outside and calmed him down while my grandma placed her order I went in about ten minutes later when my son was quiet and I apologized for my sons crying. She told me that it really "shook" her up and she struggled to concentrate I continued to apologize and explained how I totally understand it was an inconvenience but I really needed to get this done and as long as I am holding him he is fine. She never once took my apology and sent me to a back room to sit down where there was a dog. My son is mildly allergic to dogs so he isn't around them often which he has developed a fear of them due to not being around them so he started to wine again. She again rolled her eyes at me as I repeatedly apologized again and explained what I needed done. She explained how it was going to be very difficult and wS going to take a lot of work and I asked her how much notice she would need, I was planning on taking my kids home and coming back when I had a chance to come alone and wanted to give ample time and she put her hands on the air and said "do you see all of this I am very busy" as if I understand the way her business runs. If I understand the way it ran I wouldn't have asked the question. She spoke to me as if I was an inconvenience to her and was stupid. I was very uncomfortable and felt the need to continuously apologize for being a mom and bringing my children with me as I ran errands. I decided too take my kids and my jacket and not do business here as I walked out they had a sign that said "our store is not childproof so to please watch your children" the absolute more rude sign I have ever seen in an establishment. I understand it's purpose but there is no reason so single out parents simply because they have children that is discrimination and unnecessary. Have they heard of a "you break it you buy it sign" gets the same point across with out making it known children aren't welcome and making moms feel very uncomfortable! Absolutely worst customer service I have experienced! I didn't realize embroidery was such a booming industry that you could treat a well paying customer however you'd like because you have soooooo much business I thought a small embroidery shop would be so happy to have any business. In my life I have never encountered someone who is as mean, rude, and full of herself as Gaye Marie. I came to take lessons with her and she tried to break me down every time I went in for a lesson. Gaye is very knowledgeable in her sewing skills and knows what she is talking about. The problem is her way is the only way to do things and if you don't follow what she is saying she will insult you and your work. I signed up for 8 weeks of private & I paid in full. I did not return for the last 3 classes because I could no longer handle her criticism. I understand criticism helps you improve and you learn from your mistakes. I was not taking lessons to make extravagant clothing. I was simply taking lessons to improve on a hobby I love. I explained this to her when I signed up and I told her I am not a perfectionist nor will I ever be. So she knew what I wanted to learn and agreed. I am not a person that gets upset when someone cuts you down but when you keep doing it, it make it hard to learn She is definitely old school and if she had a stick I'm sure she would of hit me with it. Plus not to mention, she tries to sell you everything she sells in her store. Which I ended up buying because supposedly I needed it to improve. read more

It was by chance that I found Gaye's sewing lab. I had attended a beginner sewing lesson at Joann's and wasted $45 for 2.5 hours. I then looked around a bit more and came across Gaye's sewing lab. My life would be forever changed in the way that I looked at my work as well as things I buy that are professionally sewn. This is what I can tell you from my experience: - She is tough. She has a way of having that tough love and that little twinkle in her eye when you have done a great job. I took her beginner's course and let me tell you that what she will teach you in that course is beyond a beginner's level. I was told recently that in general, we as humans don't always push ourselves to great levels, especially with something we consider a hobby. We often need a teacher/mentor that comes in and shows you a high expectation to become great at what you do. This is what Gaye did for me. I have continued to take private lessons with Gaye to keep my skills sharp and to make the best projects for myself and others. If you are looking for a place to spend some money and never learn the art of sewing, go to Joanns. Great little business. I found it randomly online when I was searching for information on a older model hobbylock serger. The woman I talked to helped me weigh cost benefit of buying from an unknown party verses a comparable machine at their shop and even offered me a discount on a new model baby lock serger that they had just ordered. If you buy from them they offer free lifetime support/ lessons on how to use it. I decided to buy from them knowing I had some friendly helpers I could call on if I ever needed help figuring out my serger. They have lots of great sewing accessories and offer sewing classes as well. They will also order you any special needles or accessories that you need. The owner is very honest (some might say blunt) and will tell you exactly what you need to know to make a good decision. She also mentioned that price to service machines there is around $90 give or take. read more

About 6-8 months ago I was given my mother's machine she doesn't use. It seemed obvious this puppy needed a good servicing. I called and talked to a very knowledgable woman who was able to give me an estimated price. It seemed a little odd to me at first when I told her I wanted to bring it in and she said the man that services the machines was only there certain days. But okay ...When I arrived at the store I was slightly intimidated but the woman I spoke to on the phone hustled over to me and helped me. I picked my machine up and I was so happy. The woman helping me as super nice. I would definitely go back. I'd love to take classes when I have the time :) read more

I have been a customer for 19 years and became great friends with Gaye. I remember entering the store and wa greeted warmly by Gaye who gently asked me how she could help me. I was frustrated with my pfaff and said I wanted a sewing machine but no pfaff. We still laugh about that day. She showed me different models in various price ranges, asked about my sewing needs, was very informative about all the machines. I loved the Janome that I tested and decided to invest in a combo sewing and embroidery machine. Love it, I still have it and it works awesome. I can call the store anytime with" help me" questions and she is patient answering my problems. If she is busy. She will call me back and I have her cell phone number. Now I am taking private sewing lessons and enjoy every minute, have learned alot because Gaye is so knowledgeable. The beginner sewing class has tailoring techniques and very important pressing techniques. No other class would include these at all. I am very satisfied with her teaching style and my sewing is improving with each lesson. Well worth the financial investment. Also, I am always greeted by name by her and her staff.
