This restaurant was absolutely incredible. Just remember it's New Mexican food, NOT Mexican food...BIG difference. My wife and I spent 4 nights in Durango and dinner 2 nights was here. The margaritas are all fresh ingredients and no syrupy crap that most places put in margaritas. The food, off the charts! I usually love this place.Last night I went with 2 friends and was a bit disappointed. The food was great but the service was not friendly or spot on. YUMMY! One of the best Southwest/Mexican restaurants I've been to. And I've been to a few in CA and NM! Definitely more of the casual than classy vibe happening here... but that's cool. Tasty food and lots of vegetarian options. Spicy red and green chile to add to your entrees of choice. My favorite was probably the tamale (tasty and spicy but you could still really taste the sweetness of the corn meal. The chile relleno was great too and I usually don't go for those as they tend to be mostly grease. The blue corn enchiladas were pretty yummy too (though homemade is still the best !) Attentive staff and proximity to downtown are other pluses if the rave reviews of the food don't get you. read more

Not kid friendly. First, let me preface by saying I didn't actually eat there. Had we received any resemblance of customer service at the front door, this review may have been a little different. While on vacation, my family thought it would be a good idea to try this place after a long day of fun. I have a big family of 4 kids and I know they can be a little loud so I try to check the place out first before I ask for a table. This place seemed family friendly at the door until I encountered the hostess. The hostess was whispering and giggling to a staff member she was looking for a table for 6 for "screaming kids". Normally, I would have asked to speak to her manager but he was giggling right there with her. I told them not to worry about our table and I left and went to a restaurant down the street instead. The fact that management encourages this behavior makes me think that kids aren't welcome. I hope the owner and other vacationers read Yelp reviews. Being a native New Mexican, I had high expecatations. I can honestly say the food was great. Both the red and green chili sauces had great flavor. The green chili relleno had to be my favorite! It was one of the best rellenos I ever had. The batter was crispy and flavorful and the inside was loaded with cheese. The stuffed sopapilla could have been a little better - they should add potatos and other things rather than just beef. We had our two year old with us and they were great! That is always a plus when traveling. read more

I am a New Mexican food nerd. I love New Mexican food. I could eat it every day. One of the hardest things about living where I do is the lack of New Mexican cuisine. That being said, my most favorite New Mexican restaurant in or outside of New Mexico is Gazpacho's. It may have something to do with the fact that when I lived in Durango I ate here almost once a week (for 5 years), or it may be that their food is complimented well by their margs and their selection of local beer. I may never know. After having driven from my home to Durango last Thursday, the first thing the wife and I did after checking into the hotel is to go eat dinner here at Gazpacho's. We were reminded of our many dates that took place at this wonderful place many years ago. We even had a waiter who we are sure worked there the last time we ate here some 6 years ago. On to the food. What changed about us since our last visit was that we became vegetarians. What is great about Gazpacho's is that they have a veggie menu and don't use animal fat in the beans or chicken stock in the rice. This alone gets 1 star. We started with the chips and salsa. The chips are so-so, but the salsa has a nice kick to it. For the main course, I had the blue corn cheese enchiladas smothered with...you guessed it, green chili. Their green chili is hotter than that you would find at any Mexican restaurant. They make it a bit more warm as is the New Mexican way. It wasn't too hot, which was a bit disappointing, but delicious nonetheless. The blue corn tortillas were great, not too soft, but not too tough either. The cheese was melted perfectly. The wife had the veggie tamales, also with the green chili. Her dish was also very fresh, flavorful and not too heavy. Both of us had Ska True Blonde to drink with our dinners, a great compliment to our dishes. We finished off the remaining room in our tummy's with sopapillas. They were fresh, hot and delicious, especially when you add the honey butter they come with. I could have eaten at Gazpacho's each night of our stay in Durango, but in this town, there is too much good food to go around. I hope that my next visit to Durango and Gazpacho's doesn't take as long as this past one did. read more

Salsa and chips were good as was the guacamole. You know how you taste retried beans and automatically know they are home made by some abuelita in the kitchen? Well, these beans were not like that. Bravo!!! This is some of the best NEW MEXICAN food I have had outside of NM. I had the carne adovada enchiladas with green chile and sour cream with beer of course. A-mazing! This was over the 4th of July weekend and now it's August and I'm still dreaming of the plate. Super tender meat, spicy red and green chile. Nice service, the boys enjoyed bean & cheese burritos and stuffed sopapillas (if I remember correctly) and were very happy. Then we had sopapillas for dessert with honey. We had dinner there the other night and I had the Santa Rita (Christmas - green and red sauces) that came with a blue corn tortilla cheese enchilada, ground beef taco, rice, beans and posole. Everything was tasty! Service was fast and friendly. As I was reminded, Gazpacho serves New Mexican food, not Mexican food. The spices and use of green and red pepper sauces is one of the differences that makes a big difference. One of the best parts of the meal was sopapillas. Loaded with Gazpacho's honey butter and a good amount of locally produced honey, we brought our meal to a close. Previous reviewers prepared us to either face the second coming or a hurricane Katrina disaster. What we experienced was right in the middle. Service was neither exceptional nor horrible. Food was ok, nothing special, but not bad either. Margaritas were pretty good, but after the first one its hard to be discriminate ;) There is a big sign warning of the food with chilies being very hot, my enchilada with red chilies wasn't noticeably so, but then I was already on the 3rd margarita by then. Probably the biggest draw for me is the ultra-rare Mexican restaurant vegetarian menu that is claimed to actually be vegetarian (no chicken stock or lard). So, in conclusion, I'd go back and be happy as long as the margaritas were flowing. read more

We don't see our family often, as we are from out of town, but we looked forward to sharing a nice meal together. I'm not sure how it was pre-covid, but at Gazpacho's you are supposed to order and pay at the register when you walk in. There was a line on the bill for the tip, even though we had not been waited on or received service yet. I believe in tipping well, and so I tipped 20% ($15). I had a weird feeling as I was filling in the tip that we wouldn't get good service, and I was right. There were 5 of us, and we were told by the girl at the register to seat ourselves in the adjoining dining room. No host led us or directed us to our seats. Problem was, all the tables were set for 4. I was well aware that social distancing needed to be practiced and I felt uncomfortable moving furniture. I returned to the register and asked the woman if they could seat us somewhere where there was space for 5. She told me to just take a chair from another table. The problem was, there wasn't room around the tables to add another chair without pulling the table out from the wall. So, we proceeded to pull the table away from the wall so we could get another chair in- and then both the woman at the register and the waiter started yelling at us- shouting, "You can't move tables around! We have to practice social distancing!" I was embarrassed at being yelled at- I told them "If you had helped us find seating for all of us when we asked for help, this wouldn't be a problem!" They finally let us pull the end of a table away from a wall and put a chair there so we could all be seated. The rest of the customers in that dining room all got really quiet and stared at us, it was very uncomfortable. Nice family dinner ruined. After that the waiter and the girl at the register both acted like they were really annoyed with us. The waiter deposited our food beneath our chins and walked away. No one ever checked back with us to ask if everything was ok, no one ever refilled our drinks. The food is mediocre at best. The staff has absolutely no idea how to take care of their customers- and they don't care. There are a lot of super nice places to eat in downtown Durango with polite wait staff and well-prepared food- eat elsewhere. read more

I went there for the first time a couple weeks ago. The server was kind, helped me decide on what I wanted, I was stuck between a couple things on the menu, and I was very happy with what I chose. But as I was sitting there our waitress went to the kitchen window and a waiter walked up and full on grabbed her butt. I feel it was very inappropriate and unprofessional. Whatever they do outside of work is their business, but at work, in front of customers, that shouldn't be happening. read more

I was in town for work, this place was recommended to me. The hostess was good. But that's where it ends. Went in to get an order to go and I waited at least 5 minutes just for someone to come over and asked what I would like. Service was terrible food was even worse and I would not recommend this place. I got it out to the car and notice the paper bag was totally drenched in grease on the bottom and I thought that was a little weird. when I got home I realized it's because nobody put the lid on correctly and the lid came off and the burrito was half in the bag. I was going to leave a tip as I always do until I realized they charge a fee for a to-go order. So there went the tip. Now here comes the food rating. It was terrible I ate a third of my burrito. Absolutely the best New Mexican restaurant in Durango! The green chile was yummy and spicy! I asked for a "special" request on a hamburger, in a tortilla then grilled instead of on a bun. It was fabulous and the waiter stated he was going to order himself one after his shift. The only downside was I had enough fries for three people. I grew up in New Mexico, I cook Mexican food all the time, I sample and try Mexican food almost everywhere I go, my two best friends are Mexicans, and this restaurant does NOT serve Mexican food. The service was lousy, the food was bland and greasy and heavily breaded and luke warm. To be advertised as New Mexican cuisine is an insult to my home state and the wonderful cooks who reside there. We ordered the $8 guacamole which came served in a small dish with about 5 ice cream scoops of green goo which was probably extracted from a package. It was not fresh, it did not contain any visible vegetables except iceberg lettuce. Wow, disgusting. Unfortunately, we ordered the night's specials while ordering the appetizer. The fact that the fish taco special came with flour tortillas should have been a red flag...I ordered them with corn. My querida ordered the poblano relleno. Upon arriving, my corn tortillas were fried crisp, and the fish tacos were 80% fried batter and 20% fish. My date's relleno was covered in a large amount of greasy fried batter as well. We also substituted the normal sides for "homemade posole" and "dove creek whole beans". Both were edible, but extremely bland. Lastly, the salsa that so many are raving about on this site was ok at best...a smooth red liquid with little texture and only a slight bite...the oregano was the most distinguishing feature. Great walkable spot from our hotel. We sat at the bar for a few drinks, chips and guacamole while we waited for an order to-go. The bartender and wait staff were super friendly, attentive and even gave us sopapillas for free with our order. Super sweet! Plus the quesadillas we took with us were fantastic. They were 3 of us that order before another table that had 5 and they got there food before us.
