This meant that I had my back to the kitchen and didn't get a chance to watch the noodles being prepared. I did get to *hear* them with the occasional loud bang as they were slammed to the table. If loud noises will make you uncomfortable, then get yours to go. I chose the regular "Special Lanzhou Beef Noodles" in the "large" size with my noodles as narrow. Yes, you get to choose from super thin to narrow to thick, flat, medium wide and extremely wide. I enjoyed mine and would like to try the super thin next time. The soup was delicious with a rich broth and the noodles were delicious. Not spicy at all, I added a good sized spoon of chili paste from the condiments at my seat and that kicked up the flavor. I personally love any type of noodle soup and if you add hand pulled noodles...well that is just the cherry on top. this soup is savory and light but still has a deep beef flavor. I like the chili oil added on top and asked for extra scallion for garnish. I got the regular/small size which has 5 slices of thinly sliced beef on top of extra wide noodles. the chew on the noodles is amazing. I think in hindsight I would go for wide noodles instead. We chose narrow thick noodles for both bowls, the waiter suggested to choose this for the dry noodles we ordered. These were the perfect choice imo, they're not too thick, not too dense, and cooked al dente. The tomato and egg dry noodle was good - very homey, comfort food level. The tomato and scrambled eggs are sweet-ish, and quite refreshing when mixed with the cucumbers in the noodle bowl. Lanzhou Beef Noodles are yummy!! The broth is simple and clean. It comes with a few slices of white radish. Spicy cucumbers were good, they're basically doused in the same chili oil that they give provide on the table. GB has really Q noodles~ I tried their medium wide noodles with shanghai bokchoy, pork sauce and julienned raw carrots (炸酱面) - pretty authentic tasting, although at home my mom usually uses cucumbers instead. One thing about the uneven consistency of hand pulled noodles is that it can either be over cooked or under cooked. However the noods here at GB are perfectly cooked with the bouncy, springy Q texture that allows you to exercise your jaw without an overkill. The ground pork in sauce is very flavourful but a bit salty, and there was a lot of it left at the bottom of the bowl. I would have preferred to have less meat and more of the meat sauce to mix into the noodles. The unflavoured bokchoy helped cut down the saltiness of the pork, but it was kind of bland. The carrots seemed out of place. Maybe because it was dry and brittle while everything else was juicy af. Id recommend replacing carrots with cucumbers so you get that fresh and juicy taste to replenish fluids after the salty pork. I understand that they want to create a colourful dish presentation...hmm maybe try replacing bokchoy and carrots with bean sprouts? Ive gotten their thin noodles in the beef broth before but personally i prefer wider ones. Kinda because the texture is harder to experience and you can get the same dish in many similar restaurants. The medium wide noods however, has more room for creative pulling and shaping. Also got the hot soy milk (thats how i like my noodle beverage washdowns haha) and the spicy potatoe cold appetizer 凉拌酸辣土豆丝 - the right kick of spice, and very good for tastebud stimulation. They're then pulled to various levels of thickness. At GB Hand-Pulled Noodles, it ranges from super thin to extremely wide with five other options in between. Hearing people order before me, I decided on the medium wide, which is one notch under the widest side of the spectrum. Visiting during a weekday lunch, the place already had a queue of ten at the door. But, the line moves fairly quickly since they have streamlined operations that would make many automated facilities proud. However, the waiting process is a bit haphazard given they don't give out numbers - you just wait in line and remember who is before and after your table. Once you get near the front, they will ask for the number of guests and as a table is about to clear, you're handed a laminated menu so you place your order before even being seated. Within minutes of taking our seat the appetizer arrives. The Lanzhou spicy beef shank ($8.99) consisted of seven long slices of tender lean beef are tossed in a peppercorn laced chili oil, which looks fiery red but has a very mild heat. My coworker describes it perfectly - you taste the spice on your tongue but not in the throat. Since we visited on a Friday, I ordered the braised beef tendon noodles ($13.99), a dish only available Friday-Sunday. Perhaps it was the first day of the weekend, but about a quarter of the pieces were still hard to bite through and didn't offer that lovely chewy gelatinous texture. The smaller pieces were well braised and tasty. Nonetheless, it really doesn't matter as I was there for the carbs. GB's noodles are one of the better options I've had in Ontario, the dough evenly pulled so even the medium wide noodles didn't become chewy in the centre but mushy around the edges. Moreover, they stayed fairly chewy throughout the meal as it took me a while to attempt to get through the huge portion ... alas, I had to just finish the beef and leave the noodles, a practice my parents have engrained in me as a child. The wait ended up being around 20 minutes which was not too bad. When you first enter the restaurant you are greeted with one of the chefs skillfully stretching and slamming the dough for the noodles on the table. It was kind of fun to watch while waiting to be seated. The restaurant itself is not very big (probably seats around 20 or so) and the decor is very simple but this is not a place you would linger so it works. One issue I did have is I was sitting near the doorway and the people lining up were sometimes not orderly and ended up standing right next to me speaking loudly which made it very uncomfortable. In terms of food we tried ordering a soy milk and the jellyfish but both were sold out so we just ended up ordering the Lanzhou spicy beef shank and the special beef noodles. The beef shank was not bad but definitely not spicy at all in case you are concerned. The beef noodles were really enjoyable. When it arrived, one side of the broth was covered with chili oil and there was a lot of ingredients floating around. The broth was full of flavour and not too salty while the noodles had a nice "bounce" to it when you bit into them. I ordered the large and felt that it was a good portion which left you full but not overly stuffed as they give a generous portion of noodles. Someone next to me ordered the mega size and unless you are starving it might be a little much to handle. Service was pretty good given how busy they were. The staff went as far as walking out into the cold to give menus and take orders from those in line outside the restaurant. Tables were cleared quickly when patrons left and the next group seated. When we came at about 6pm, there were still a couple of empty seats; however, by the time it was around 7pm, a line was already forming outside! We decided to be more economical and share a mega beef bowl for $15.99. The noodles came in a massive and generous portion, topped with roughly 8 pieces of beef shank, some sliced daikon, and coriander and scallions. If you're not a big fan of the coriander or scallions, feel free to ask for them on the side like we did! I quite enjoyed the taste of the broth; it was fairly light and refreshing. The noodles arrived al dente, but since it was such a gigantic bowl and we had ordered the thin noodles, they slowly became mushy and soggy near the end. Overall, the noodles hit the spot and provided the ultimate comfort food feels! However, I did find the plain beef bowl to be quite bland and boring as I made my way through the bowl. There is a regular gentleman that serves the food and he looks like he despises working there. He acts like you're bothering him if you flag him down to order or ask for the bill. I've been to GB two times now and it's one of my favorite restaurants in the world! It is a tiny restaurant but the food is absolutely delicious and is a MUST if you are visiting Toronto (I am an out of towner). The portion size is huge and the price is right. Finally a hand-pulled noodle place downtown! Really delicious noodles where you can choose whether you want it flat or round and the level of thickness. You can even watch the noodles being pulled at the window while you wait. The menu isn't very big so we got the regular broth with some spice. We appreciated that there was more chili oil on the table so you could add to your liking. The flat noodles were perfect for the flavourful broth and were nicely chewy. I ordered a large which turned out to be bigger than I thought! A small is definitely enough to fill you up, and a mega is good for two to share. It was a bit expensive compared to other noodle places I've been to but not overly, especially for the area. The place is very small and it seems to be busy all the time. Be prepared to wait during dinner hours, we waited about 15-20mins. The door does not shut properly, so there is a thick curtain to block most of the wind, however, if you're sitting near the entrance, it can be a bit chilly in the winter. Very excited! Food: They had a small menu. We ordered the same thing. Sorry we weren't feeling that adventurous today. So beef noodle soup with turnip. The broth was tasty and the noodles were perfect. It arrived in a plastic take out container. That is fine. I'm sure they're trying to minimize work and cost. What they should fix though is that plastic spoon. It's not meant for soup. Service: its neither good nor bad. She wasn't friendly nor rude. Lol I guess just kinda felt like you should eat and leave situation. Then again I understand that. That's exactly what we should do. I would come back here again. We have a decent alternate to the food courts here folks. The noodles are made fresh by hand and one has an option to choose the size of the noodles to boot. The place was packed when I visited. I opted for the takeout option on this visit. They package the items well with the broth and dry items separately. They also provided a pack of hot chillies which provided the kick I felt the beef broth warranted. The noodles are good and beef was OK as well. You can watch the noodles being made/pulled while waiting for seats The menu is small but tastes great! We got their jellyfish and beef shin apps - both were very good. It was quite busy despite being a little after 1 PM. Expect to wait. That should be a good sign though. Came with a party of 3, which is quite an odd number. Restaurant had no issue with it however; they just took a two-person table and added an extra chair and now it's a table for 3. However, the restaurant is pretty small, and moving around is quite difficult. That extra chair didn't make it any better. There is a single washroom in the back. Might be nice if they had a second one, but I don't think they have room for it. We ordered the mega bowl to split. It is quite a large bowl, though my issue with it is the amount of meat and veggies seems to be the same, just with a lot more noodles and soup. Taste was alright. I enjoyed the chewy texture of the noodles. The soup was ok. You can definitely split a mega bowl between two people unless you're a huge eater. Terrible eating experience ever have in Toronto with any Chinese restaurant. We was been here couple times before but since this year is first time. After seat and waiting for 30 mins to server the bowl of noodle. Whole restaurant is one server and one women chief ( it's definitely not grand opening chef ). There is no service can say also they are not be attention for isolation. One customer seated in front of our table. Let's talk about food. Noodle is so hard as I mentioned server I want soft noodles. The appetizer we ordered kimchi but not fresh. So we change to spicy cucumber. Sauce is way salty. White marinated chicken was not fresh too. We just taste and spit out. Anyways won't recommend and never come back again. read more

I don't think a long review is warranted, simply because it's not safe for me to eat here (peanut allergy). Suffice it to say that the waiter straight up told me when I was about to order that it wasn't safe to eat. Good to know, but would be better if it was more well known (or at the very least, better advertised). EDIT: To clarify, I asked before ordering what I could and could not eat, given that I had a peanut (but not a nut) allergy. The waiter then informed me that nothing was safe, and that's where I take issue: they could easily just clean the cooking material better, but not taking the time or effort to do so warrants my one-star review. I did my due diligence to verify my situation, so please do not send me further hateful comments regarding my allergy.
