I got the rice bowl with the chicken gyro and added cucumbers, green peppers, red onion, tomatoes, and Taziki sauce. The only thing I would make a suggestion on is to provide a little more to tzatziki sauce. The service was great. Very friendly. The owner was in the restaurant and I had a quick conversation with him. The atmosphere is honestly what kept me in there. I love coming here. It truly feels like I'm on vacation and not in the middle of Valpo. Great ambiance and Michael the owner is the most friendly, hard working restaurant owner I ever met. There were some suggestions people made when they first opened and he was quick to implement them and listens to his patrons. I tried many dishes here and they're all great and flavorful. To my surprise and disappointment most of the things on the menu are not made in house, except for the desserts (which I didn't try). I got 2 appetizers and 1 entree Falafel appetizer- nothing more than my Trader Joes frozen falafel that i make in the air fryer. These were fried too much, burnt almost, I couldn't eat more than one. Tyropita appetizer- my favorite thing on the menu. Feta cheese, cream cheese, cottage cheese in phylo dough and fried. What's there not to like? Lamb gyro plate with rice pilaf and greek salad- the gyro meat was good, dont like it chopped in such small pieces. Rice could have had more flavor. Upon arriving you are greeted by a man that I am assumed was the owner. Extremely knowledgable and passionate about the restaurant. Very friendly and outgoing. I couldn't decided between the lamb or chicken gyro so I got both. They are absolutely delicious, tasty, and filling. We also ordered the Cajun Spicy fries along with the Spicy Feta Spread (we love spicy) and it was very very good! The village salad is Geitonia is incredibly clean and a well oiled machine. This place is a fast food, with a touch more class. Not the Parthenon or Pegasus but NOT a greasy spoon. At this place you can sit in quite relaxing atmosphere that is clean & well maintained. The star of the show is their "house made" lemon rice soup. I must digress here about the "house made lemon rice soup" I have some very disturbing observations as to its actual source. The owner of this place apparently resorts to slave labor. While this practice is not uncommon to second generation Greek men in America, the abuse of it for commercial gain goes beyond the pale. Second Gen Greek men, of whom I have known hundreds (I almost married into a Greek family.) are mama's boys. They usually enslave their mothers for various forms of domestic servitude, such as extended baby sitting, (weekends or even full weeks for vacation), laundry (greek men/boys do not know what a washing machine is), cooking on the weekend (because 2nd Gen Greek woman can not cook like mom) & other tasks the Greek man is mentally incapable of understanding. Here, however, I saw the owner's mother, behind the counter, & even picking up dishes... all while the owner was telling me the lemon rice soup was "house made." LIES! Later he ADMITTED (when I pressed him to buy a 1-2 quarts) that he could not sell me more than a bowl of soup since his MOTHER was responsible for making it & she only had so much capacity. Clearly this means he is working her so hard she is incapable of turning out more soup to feed this man's craven need for success! And successful he would be! This Lemon Rice soup is one of the best I have had. It is AUTHENTIC, lemony, & is NOT flour thickened. Now, on to the gyros which is also different! The gyros is NOT Kronos standard gyros plugs but "house made" gyros meat. They cook, chop & season the meat themselves. As a result it is VERY juicy, not dried out and is NOT overly seasoned with lots of salt -- think, steak like meat versus ground chuck. Now we had the falafel appetizer. Most folks use a mix, or premade falafel. This place uses frozen pre-made falafel which because they are frozen, when they go into the deep fryer, they turn out highly consistent & above all moist in the middle while being crunchy on the outside. Their french fries (normally I would not review) appear to freshly cut unpeeled potatoes they fry and then use kosher salt on their fries. Because I loved the fries I would love to see them make a new dish with their gyros meat, topped with chopped onions, tzatziki & diced tomatoes. Maybe they can call them "Lance's Fries"? read more
