Probably my favorite Gelson's Market in the Valley, especially the bakery! The bakery offers beautifully decorated, made to order cakes and they consistently exceed expectations in both presentation and taste. The alligator pastry with pecans and caramel is sinfully delicious. The floral section always has fresh flowers and the staff is very helpful. Easy parking and off the 101 at Hayvenhurst, this location is compact but thoughtfully organized and well stocked with all the essentials, making it easy to shop without feeling overwhelmed. Their selection of fresh produce, prepared foods, and specialty items is impressive for the size and layout. Despite a sometimes demanding clientele, the staff remains patient, attentive and genuinely helpful, providing a level of service that keeps me coming back. *Always* get a receipt.... Don't get me wrong, I generally enjoy shopping here, even though it's over three miles away, rather than going a few blocks to the local Ralph's. But, on three occasions so far in the past few years, when I've selected some cash back from the card swiper, the cashier either just ignored it or forgot about it, but I didn't get my cash. If I complained about it soon enough they would just acknowledge the error and give me my cash. Otherwise, if maybe I didn't realize it until I was back to my car, they would have to shut down that register and count the till. That's why when they ask me if I want a receipt I *always* say yes. read more

This Gelson is very clean. They have a tiramisu cake topped with fresh seasonal fruit. We had it for my friend's birthday celebration and it was delicious. The prices in store are outrageous. They have the same products as other stores, but for the double the prices. On the day I visited, employees were not friendly at all. No greeting or acknowledging the customer. I have been to other Gelson's locations and I was amazed by their customer service. I would give five stars to the deli selection. They had a variety of packages meat, salads and sandwiches to purchase. I also give five stars to the bakery selection. They had a variety of bread, pastries, cookies to purchase. I quietly brought it to the attention of Store Director Jon Cook because I would not want this to happen to anyone else. I also stated that I did not want the employee embarrassed or her job threatened in any way. Jon responded with kindness and immediately handled the situation with professionalism, genuine concern, and respect. He replaced everything without making the situation bigger than it needed to be. I was very disappointed by my experience at this Gelson's. While some of the cashiers are friendly and professional, there are a few employees whose behavior is completely unacceptable. During one visit, a cashier told me "F*** you" in front of my 4-year-old child. I was shocked that an employee would speak to a customer that way, especially in a family-oriented grocery store. I also witnessed employees treating special-needs coworkers very poorly, to the point that one employee became visibly upset, crying and having a difficult time coping. What made the situation even more concerning was management's response. When these issues were brought to a manager's attention, the reaction seemed dismissive and even amused rather than concerned. Based on my experiences, there appears to be a serious problem with customer service and workplace culture at this location. I expected much better from a store that markets itself as a premium grocery chain. I genuinely question how this store is still open. I came in to buy daikon that's it. Anyone who's ever bought one knows it's long, awkward, and barely fits on those tiny self-checkout scales. I grabbed two daikons, put them in a produce bag, weighed them, and the scale read 1.60 pounds. I paid almost $6, which is already absurd for produce that isn't even especially fresh. While I'm checking out, the self-checkout attendant rushes over and starts mumbling something along the lines of "Look... look what you did," without clearly explaining the issue. She could barely communicate what was supposedly wrong, yet the tone was accusatory, as if I were trying to steal over a fraction of a pound of daikon. What makes this even more ridiculous is this: If I were actually trying to steal produce, why would I put the daikon in a produce bag AND then pay an extra $0.10 for a paper grocery bag? If I were being dishonest or "cheap," why would I voluntarily make myself pay more? The interaction was humiliating and completely unnecessary. Instead of clearly and politely explaining how to place an awkward item on the scale, the employee chose to publicly shame a customer over something trivial without even being able to communicate the issue properly. If you're going to charge premium, upscale prices especially on Ventura Blvd in Encino, where you're clearly trying to project a "bougie" image then the customer experience needs to match that. That includes staff who can communicate clearly, act professionally, and handle minor checkout issues without embarrassing customers. High prices, mediocre produce, and poor customer service don't mix. If this store wants to position itself as upscale, it needs to start acting like it. read more

I want to give the biggest shout out to Valeria in the floral department. I was in a total bind and she absolutely came thru. I went to Gelsons looking for a corsage and boutonniere in a panic after a member of our party had an issue with the place they ordered from. Valeria made us a beautiful boutonnière in record time, and already had a corsage made because clearly she's prepared like that and, given the prom season, anticipated the needs Gelson's customers. I ordered Instacart from this location and the bagels that arrived had some sort of disgusting moldy growth on them. I filed a complaint with Instacart but also called the manager and he was barely apologetic. Basically said you have to call Instacart to get a credit and he'll check the rest of the bagels but has never heard of this happening before. I insisted on sending a photo. the bakery lady inside this Gelson's was SO NASTY AND RUDE today that I don't ever want to come in to Gelson's ever again. I went in Tuesday 2-17-26 at around 2pm and I waited at the cash-register behind a customer while that customer finished their transaction. I was standing directly behind the customer, and waited patiently for about 3 minutes for him and the bakery lady to finish their chit-chat. After that customer began to walk off, the bakery lady looked to the side where another gentleman was standing around for about a minute, and bakery lady asked "Can I help you?" to that man. The man very politely said "Oh, this person here was before me", pointing to me. I thanked that polite man, and looked at the bakery lady who just looked at me without saying anything. I asked the bakery lady if I can try a sample of the Lazzalo coffee they had written on their whiteboard. The bakery lady rolled her eyes and then grabbed a sample of that coffee for me. That really made me lose my appetite. I was going to sample to see if I liked it and then possibly order a tall cup of it. I have done that before at this location. If this bakery lady would have said "We're not supposed to give samples", that would have been much better than her rolling her eyes at me after she had just failed to acknowledge that I had arrived before the other person and had actually been waiting for a while. I was actually at this exact location and at this exact bakery, and ordered a bunch of pastries from this exact lady YESTERDAY, on George Washington President's Day. And I even had a brief chat with this lady, who like myself is an Iranian. She told me she has worked at that bakery for 34 years, which thinking on it now is very disappointing considering how terrible her customer service abilities are. She is a short lady with short hair and glasses, and about 55-60 years old. The vibes and common courtesy of place really matter a lot. Noticing people waiting matters. Acknowledging one's errors matters, and saying things like "sorry, excuse me, forgive me", these things matter a lot. Kindness and hospitality in the service industry matter a lot. I have been coming to Gelson's even though I live across the street from Ralph's, and very close to the Trader Joe's on White Oak, and there's a few other mom/pop grocery stores within walking distances from me, but I have been coming to Gelson's, which is not near me, because there were some things I liked, but if the vibes stink, and the attitudes suck, and the customer service is NASTY, then that's it. read more

Isn't it funny? I came here to leave a lovely review for a Gelson's that's always been considered the top of the line of this small chain. Imagine my surprise seeing all these recent negative reviews. Positively odd. Now, I have a Gelson't two minutes from me in Sherman Oaks - it's okay, but the deli case there isn't great, frankly. Everything else is fine, but they frequently don't have enough cashiers. Studio City is always great. But my optometrist is just down the street from the Encino branch. Hadn't been there in ages, but I've now been there three times in a week and a half and was very impressed by just about everything, which is why all these one-star reviews are baffling to me. Their deli department - everything there looks really fresh and I've had the ribs twice now and they were great. I always check out the Wolfgang Puck salads and they always look super fresh, too. Got some cube steaks that were stellar. Their lobster salad is the best of any Gelson's I've been to, and they have a few items that no other Gelson's I've been to has. I've checked out the bakery and everything there looks great. And they have a six-pack of the onion rolls I absolutely love that Sherman Oaks no longer gets. All in all, I've had nothing but great experiences from there and every person I've come in contact with has been very nice. read more

I am not a Gelson's shopper. It typically is way too overpriced for me and I just rather go to trader joe's or sprouts. That being said I was looking into getting a cake for an engagement party and from all the options we got pricing from Gelsons and it was *relatively* reasonable. It was mostly convenient location wise and so we went with it! Subtracted one star for pricing. I wanted a simple buttercream cake, minimalistic, with small dainty flowers/olive branch on it and we got just that. We added the olive branch ourselves and bought the flower from them. They were punctual and gave me the exact cake I wanted. For the flavor I got strawberries and cream. As someone who does NOT like cake and really thinks of it as more of a prop I can honestly say it was the best cake I have had. The entire cake finished with no pieces left, something that has never happened before. It was light, fluffy, and delicious. Overall, very much enjoyed the cake and would order again. read more

Yesterday I was WRONGLY accused of stealing and when I proved that I had not stolen, the idiot liar merely shrugged his shoulders and walked off with a smirk on his face, no apology. Came here on the way home and noticed parking can be real tight, but luckily there were several spaces available. It was very clean store and there were enough cashiers to keep the lines moving. We had just come back from a visit to Hawaii and I was craving poke again. I was fortunate that they had a poke bar available here and was briefly brought back to paradise upon every mouthwatering bite. I don't like being negative, about anywhere I go, but after what just happened and was experienced, I refuse to stay silent. From the minute I approached the location where all the Wolfgang Puck food is made to checking out, I've never felt more out of place than ever. Being told in the number line, with ATTITUDE "this isn't where you order" wasn't necessary, we could've been told it's on the other side and provided guidance. When it came to checking out, it wasn't necessary to be stared at and have the feeling like I'm either doing something wrong or just being stared at like I do not belong. Then when we received our sandwiches and came home, the brown lettuce in the sandwich isn't needed to eat what should be a tasty sandwich. I only enjoyed the bowl of chili we took and that was that. Pretty annoyed right now! I love gelsons and this was the first time trying their sandwich's. There was the option between turkey, pesto or chicken aioli which I chose the chicken aioli since I HATE pesto. Anyway long story short the sandwich I got was labelled wrong and was indeed pesto and I don't have time to run back there and grab something else as I have a short work break. So I had to salvage what I could of the sandwich. Then the bread starting falling apart honestly for a $11 sandwich I expect something a little bit better especially for wolf gang puck. It is with great angst that I write this review. Gelson's has successfully gone downhill while raising prices for inferior produce and other perishable products. Rotten Vegetables, soft potatoes, soft onions that are growing roots, hard dried out cheeses, and expiration dates that are still on the shelf the day of expiring, including meats. Stop trying to fool customers with low end tasteless products that sit in a warehouse for way too long and are ready for donation. They go way beyond to accommodate your needs, cut their packages of meat if you ask them to, they have the best chicken and meat. Better than whole food.
