My in-laws immigrated to Israel from Romina and Tripoli, North Africa when is was Italy in 1940s. My wife was born in Haifa, Israel live there as a teenager and we visit every few years. They then moved to Woodland Hill in 1980s and have shopped at Super Sal for 30+ years on Ventura Blvd in Encino. This review has been long overdue! But as other Yelpers know life gets hectic and sometimes you forget to write spots up! Whenever I go down to the Los Angeles area to visit family I always make it a must to get some quality Jewish and/or Israeli food! Unfortunately our options for both are limited up in Northern California, but Angelenos are spoiled with their plethora of options in this space! I hadn't been to Super Sal Market in years! Probably since I had lived in the L.A. area 10 or so years ago. Super Sal is located in the South San Fernando Valley (Encino to be exact) on Ventura and White Oak. It is a Kosher/ Jewish grocery store that has a wide array of Jewish/Kosher/Israeli products! I was in the need for some Israeli spices to bring back to my wife so I knew I had to hit Super Sal up! When you walk in you're automatically amazed at how many Israeli products they've imported! Anything and everything from cereals, shampoos, cutlery, and even ice cream!!! (Seriously, someone tell me how that works?? Wouldn't it melt on the way over here?) You honestly feel like you're in Israel! They also have freshly baked breads, a deli section, and a wide variety of Sephardic foods too! I'm not as familiar with Sephardic Jewish food so it always intrigues me to see new goods I didn't know about before! Even if you're not Jewish or Israeli, a visit to Super Sal Market is still a fantastic cultural experience getting to see all the meats, foods, imported items, and more! I give Super Sal 4 out of 5 stars because they are a little expensive (which I get because a lot of their products are imported or difficult to find). And I wish their floors were a little cleaner. But at a time when antisemitism and Jew hatred is high in America it's important to support Jewish shop owners. Great selection of Israeli and kosher food but also very pricey, compared to prices you would pay at a regular grocery store. I only come here for very specific things I can't find anywhere else . The prices you will pay here are far more pricey than what you would pay in Israel- for the same exact product! My review is for the market only, not the restaurant, i have never eaten here. A year has passed by and I've decided to give Supersal another chance (after all, they house all the greatest product that arrives straight from Israel, including delicious dairy products). I must be candid and give credit when credit is due, my experience this time around (3 visits) is completely different. Every item on my list was fresh and tasty, the expiration dates on all the items that I've purchased were up to normal standards, like what you would expect to see at Trader Joe or Bristol Farm. Super Sal Market - Grocery Near Me - Encino, California

Super Sal has some of the best licorice I have ever had, which I know is not their speciality but it's amazing and something you will not find anywhere else besides maybe a speciality candy store! They also have a great selection of Israeli newspapers which is why I originally started coming here, but now I'm definitely making special trips for the licorice and other unique and cool finds! The cashier was also friendly and it's so nice to go somewhere in the valley that has a spacious (and free!) parking lot. Overall I absolutely recommend to anyone looking for authentic Israeli food/goods, or the licorice (or candy in general) enthusiast! read more

Kosher market in the middle of Encino. Their prices are steep which is to be expected for kosher food. The place is generally dirty which is why I dropped it two stars and a lot of their stuff is not marked for prices. Kind of shady. Honestly they don't even deserve one star! They deserve no star! Worst experience, worst customer service I received going to super sal market! RUDE manager, disgusting how she treated me. I called in the morning regarding I had EXPIRED MEAT and the lady said yes yes come in and we will refund you no problem. I bought maybe 10 pieces of meat, 7 types of chickens. And the rest beef, i purchase a lot of meat/chicken to store in my freezer, for a few weeks until the next time. Any ways. I spent about $350 on February 14th and when I got home I put everything in the freezer. Sunday night I had defroster chicken tenders to make schnitzel and the smell of that chicken was GROSS. Monday morning I got to super sal with my daughter in my hands, I explained to her that I opened up the chicken and it smelled really bad, Lady told me that I bought 6 days ago that she cannot give me a refund for my EXPIRED chicken. She called the owner and even the owner told me that they cannot give me a refund because it's been 6 days and they only refund after 24 hours of purchase, I was explaining to the lady that I got home shoved all my meat in the freezer and she starts yelling at me that maybe something is wrong with my freezer that I need to get it checked. She told me I cannot shop at this store any more , told me she'll take pictures of me that I'm not allowed at her market. I was humiliated by this lady yelling at me with my daughter with me. When only I just wanted a refund for my EXPIRED CHICKEN! I will never shop at your market ONLY because your treat your customers like absolute shit! DONT SHOP AT SUPER SAL YOULL GET expired meat and they'll do what they did to me humiliate you in front of everyone. read more

This is a great food market to get all of your groceries in general but specifically if you want Kosher Food. They have a lot of things for Shabbat, like Shabbat candles, yahrzeit candles, wine for Kiddish, baby challot bread two packs for Hamotzi. They even have Kippah's if you need one. Many products are in Hebrew, and the staff are so friendly and will tell you what they say/mean. If you live far, make a pilgrimage to this store as they have so many things that are so nice. They have some of the best disposable dinnerware I've ever seen. If you're learning Hebrew this is the best spot to give it a try in real life. read more

My review is only in relation to the hot foods in front of the store. Food is tasty with many options to the sides and meats. Priced fairly. Very generous with their portions. Staff is great and parking is free in the back. Food can be a little salty and the lamb shawarma can have some grizzly pieces of fat within which is why I don't recommend it. My true rating is a 3.5 stars that I round up. Food is glatt kosher. They even have some of the flavored waters you only see in Israel. read more

I remember this place when it was a blockbuster! This is a kosher market. Anything that is dairy or meat or imported is likely going to be pricey. For me, this is not a place to dedicatedly shop for all my groceries, I would only come for specialty items that I can't get at Trader Joe's or that I know will be cheaper here. Produce is super competitive/cheap here, which is typical for kosher markets in general. I can get mint and Serrano peppers here for a quarter of the price that they sell it for at big box chains, and it's usually better quality too. If you can catch when they put out the fluffier pita bread, it's honestly a must buy. So good when fresh!!!! I recommend against purchasing their in-house made salads, they're on the bland side. If you see the Mama's brand, I recommend that instead. All in all, legit. If you guys start stocking shoko b'sakit please let me know!! read more

A middle eastern supermarket in the middle of the valley, say that 20 times fast. If you've ever been to a Israeli market you'll know what I'm talking about. From crambos to bamba they have almost everything a Israeli market should have, without the pushing! Every kind of salads you could ever ask for from hummus to baba ganoush and eggplant salads and to many more to mention, grab some fresh pita bread and bam. They have a sandwich counter inside the store ( Dr. Sandwich ) that sells hot prepared food. The Sharma and falafel are so good you could get it on a plate or in a pita, laffa or baguette.They have a meat counter as well. It's all kosher so they are closed fri in the late afternoon and closed all day Saturday. So what ever your looking for that you might have had from your trip to Isreal it's here! I bought a beef tongue that was rotted. The manager exchanged it and the new one was rotted too. It turns out that it was from the same batch. They wouldn't give me a refund after this terrible experience and blamed me instead. Poor management and lack of quality. Honestly, this place used to be a great spot for lunch until a few months ago. Every time I order, they same guy at the counter is unbelievably CHEAP with what goes into a plate of falafel or shawarma. He exudes an attitude/energy as if you're sucking his soul out of him when you ask for more than the paltry spoonful of hummus he begrudingly puts in the little corner square of your to-go box. Then, if you're lucky enough to have an employee help you with the order, he gives them a major case of the "stink eye" for giving you a decent portion. This is a great market for anyone who look for Israeli products or care about kosher food. Easy large parking, hot food, and reasonable prices. One thing that they need to improve (and I did comment about it to the manager) is the expiration date written on the products.
