I battled for a while on how to score Gen Korean BBQ House! Whenever I leaned toward a 4, I found that I needed to leave out my feelings about fighting with the food I eat, which is difficult for me! But that's on me, not the restaurant. And the food, of which this is a hot pot cook and serve yourself full service restaurant has to be considered in my scoring and graded on that. Now, speaking of service, it was outstanding from the door greeter, our server, and having an opportunity to speak with the manager, I will say that the courtesy and attention to detail was evident throughout the eating cooking and eating experience. It has been a few years since I had eaten in this type of restaurant, and being it was my birthday, I kind of said "Oh no!" To myself as I knew what I was in for. But with the psychological game I was playing inside my head, I instantly made a shift and determined to make it a fun and enjoyable experience. It worked! Except my dearest was having difficulty chewing the meat. But again this was not due to the quality of the meats we chose, it was something else. But the food was very good. I loved the appetizers that came with our dinner at the start. I'm scared to eat kimchi because it's often fire on my tongue! But not this time - there was a little heat in most of the appetizers, but nothing that I couldn't handle. It's good to see the restaurant holding back some of the heat to help those who desire less burn from the taste. Now the meats we had all cooked well and timely in the pot. They did sneak a little Mexican in the meat choices with the pollo (chicken) asado! They had al pastor as well, and thought I had ordered it, but it didn't show up. Now, I would say on the pollo asado offering that I felt the spicing was a little too heavy. It was good and I do miss Mexican cuisine from my years in San Diego. We also had pork belly, which I didn't try because I don't eat pork, but it was a good looking option for those who do like it. Now I will say that I did really like the beef bulgogi - was nicely marinated and pretty tender and not overly chewy. Now, I will say that there were only two of us, but I think we would have fared better being in a group of four or more. I will say that the large padded seating booths are pretty awesome! We needed a lot of room to set all the appetizers and choices we made. I also wish I had gotten to try the carne asada and al pastor. But that's for another day :D I do love the ambiance of Gen Korean BBQ. It's modern in appearance. The spacing is good and it's very well-managed and the care in cleanliness is highly visible. It wasn't a busy time when we visited Gen, but we got to see others enjoying their meals here - and most clearly were large groups that seemed to know the drill better that we did at this type of restaurant. With Gen being in Town Center, I have to finally say that the price of the meal was very reasonable, especially when you have a complete menu to choose many items from. It was impressive. I'm a Californian, so I was spoiled with Gen locations all around me back home. I damn near crashed my car when I saw the skeleton and the sign go up in the Town Center, so of course I knew I'd be back once they opened. All you can eat KBBQ! Amazing flavor. Great price, just don't fall for that deluxe upgrade they try to sell you. The standard offering is MORE than enough, with great quality meats to choose from. I realize a lot of people are opposed to the concept of cooking your own food around here? To me, for delicious marinated meats, tasty sides, and the ability to eat until I have to roll myself out of the restaurant make this a great experience. Drinks are tasty but a bit pricey. My daughter is into al things Korean so she wanted to come here for lunch. We arrived at 1:30 after about 10 minutes we were finally greeted by the waiter. We were advised that since it was a holiday that it was dinner pricing all day. Just for the record it was St. Patrick's Day on a Tuesday in Jacksonville at a Korean Barbecue if my daughter wasn't with me I would have left but I didn't want to disappoint her to bad Gen Korean didn't feel the same way about me. I'm trying to extend grace to the server because he was the only one working all the tables but their were several request I made like getting silverware and I had to remind him after several minutes to actually get it. Our table initially ordered cilantro rice and we had already cooked and eaten most of our meal before receiving it. There were a couple things on the minute that was not available like the double dragon shrimp, I was told corporate had discontinued it. I could understand if there were physical menus but you scan a QR code so it's just updating it in one location. The cups were covered in water spots I guess that at least means they washed them but not sure how good. Finally just in case you are wondering there is no military discount. Ohh what a fun eating experience! Korean BBQ is something im not very familiar with, so friends said they would take me and show me how to do it! The concept is its $25 per person for lunch, for unlimited apps, meats, a Lil banchan and white rice. You can order 2 apps and 3 meats at a time, then they start coming out and everything tasted so good! I loved the japchae noodles, the meats were so good too, that crispy pork belly! Also loved they give you a side plate of sauces and a green tea salt to season your foods with! The only thing I didn't love is the service, I would have liked refills on the banchan or hot rice, but our server wasn't coming around much, and always seemed rushed. We waited a really long time to get greeted. The server took over fifteen minutes to come to our table to tell us that he would be back. Next he brought us cups of water with a lot of water spots. Then we were told that because it was St. Patrick's day we were charged with dinner all day. Next we were told that the double shrimp was no longer on the menu. I'm pescatarian without any seafood on the menu l could only have to five raw shrimp with heads on, rice and noodles. The glass noodles were very good. This is my go to place for KBBQ in Jacksonville! Definitely the one location with the most options to choose from! Love the wide open space for plentiful seating. Servers are super friendly and very willing to share recommendations. They also do a great job of bringing your orders quickly and switching out the grills. Food was really solid. Huge restaurant which is a great option for big families, large work groups, post-game /team celebrations without feeling like you're crowding the place. They have booths for smaller parties and overall the vibe is very modern , very welcoming. I went with a party of 8 on a weeknight around 6:30pm. It seemed pretty busy and my only complaint is having to flag down the same server. They have an electronic device to put orders in so I would say it is efficient but we found ourselves running out of food before we were checked on so I would much prefer the servers to stop at our table pretty regularly. My wife's birthday lunch with a couple of friends. We went on Sunday so it's dinner price at $30 and additional $ if you want to add premium meats. Gen Korean was very good. We went for dinner and opted not to upgrade to the premium meats and honestly, we didn't need to. There were enough options on the regular menu for us to choose from. We tried the galbi, beef bulgogi, spicy pork belly, honey soy beef belly, k-gochugang beef belly, chicken, and a few other meats. The quality of the meat was very good. We got seconds on a few things, such as the galbi and bulgogi, and took our waiter's suggestion for the pork belly at the end. One thing that I really liked about this place is that they change the grills frequently to ensure a clean cook. I arrived a little later than others that I was dining with and salad, japchae, marinated vegetables, mashed potatoes, kimchi, and rice were already on the table. Initially I didn't realize that there was additional banchan that could be ordered. We ended up also adding the fried dumplings, cheese tonkatsu, and hotteok. I liked the little cinnamon filled pancakes as a mini dessert and the dumplings were good. The cheese tonkotsu was interesting but it may have been that the piece that I tasted just did not have much cheese in it. Additionally, we got the rice sticks and they were flavorless. Service was excellent here. The waiter came by enough to clean the grills and to check on us, but he was not overbearing. Let me start off by saying, I'm a huge fan of Korean BBQ. I like in CA and we have Gen near me. I've visited many times. I had expectations based on the fact it's the same chain and I've eaten there numerous times. The hostess who checked us in told us there would be a wait, however it was not busy inside and there were many tables. She was not very pleasant. We were seated after about 10 minutes. Our servers were very friendly, sweet and funny. We really enjoyed this younger lady as our server, I wish I'd remembered her name. There was also a younger gentlemen that was very kind. They definitely made up for the unpleasant hostess. We ordered the Hawaiian Steak, Beef Belly, Mandu, Galbi, Japache and a few other items. Luckily they had mostly the same menu. What they did not have was corn cheese and rice paper. This shocked me as literally every other Korean BBQ offers those items, they are staples! The Galbi came out and it was very inconsistent between orders. Some were thick, some were thin, some had more meat and some were mostly bones. At least the flavor was good. The Hawaiian Steak tasted good, but is about half the thickness as my local location. The Beef Belly was oddly rolled lengthwise and you could not unroll it to cook it. It was odd. The mandu was fine and so was the Japache. Overall the food was just OK and it's not going to be on my list of places to visit when I come to Jax. read more

We did an impromptu birthday lunch for one of our friends, we all love Korean BBQ so we had to try the newest KBBQ in Jax located at the Town Center. During the weekday they have a lunch menus, during the weekend it's just the dinner menu. There's the regular dinner menu and the prime menu that was an additional $20 pp with higher end meats. We ordered the regular menu. The meats were really tasty and they changed out each burner after we finished cooking. They came regular to ask what meats we wanted next but have 4 different types we were full. We started with Soju, not the cheap Soju but the good soju. We had two sets of Banchan for 4 of us our fave was the cucumber kimchi. We also ordered mandu, japchae and a salad. It was all included in the initial cost except the soju. The only meat we didn't think was that tasty was the brisket, even with the sauces they provided. Everything else was on point. The restaurant is spacious, lots of long tables for large parties and booths for smaller parties. I liked the elegant decor and the staff were very welcoming and assisted with our order making suggestions that we found helpful. Other staff assisted us too, just to ensure all was well. Sara, the manager came to our table to ensure they met or exceeded our expectations too, she was kind enough to take our pictures. I've been to one other KBBQ in Jacksonville and they are totally different vibes, both are good for the vibe they present. General seemed really great for dates, coming alone or with large groups to just chill and enjoy each other's company while cooking pre-seasoned meats and eating other items from the menu. Ok...so I went back. We upgraded to the premium menus and oh my! It did not disappoint! Our fave was the boneless short rib. The wagyu was so delicious as well! And just when we thought we couldn't take anymore...we got the gochujang beef belly and it was my absolute fav! Not even on the premium menu. We got lettuce leaves to wrap the delights in. The service was frequent and attentive. We paired our meats with sliced radish and Terra beer. Love Terra. AYCE Korean BBQ at a reasonable price point in a very nice and well appointed Korean K-pop vibe style restaurant. NOW, that I have given you overall description Of what it appears to be. I have eaten better Korean Street food out of a Sochu Tent in Seoul or Pusan, Osan, Kunsan or any of the other places I lived during my almost 3 years of working for the US military there. There are a couple better AYCE Korean BBQ places than this disgraceful excuse for Korean food being prepped while cutting their food cost. Portion in the Banchan were even trimmed down into smaller than normal sizes and yet the portion was reduced. I have never experienced the bowl of grease and tofu the call SOONDOOBOO SOUP (Spicey Soft Tofu Soup With Vegetables). Firstly What vegetables and usually comes with very well cut soft Tofu squares? Now for the meats, the only saving grace in this category was the Pork Belly(Correctly seasoned and cut). Both the Beef and the Pork Bulgogi had been processed and/or ground to the point that the beef was almost the consistency of ground beef. The Pork Bulgogi was like a mush similar to the beef. The Fried Mandu(Gyoza) were good. As for the service, he was like a rookie car salesman. He wanted to upsell you for everything, but was very attentive as were the remainder of the servers working the (3 tables at lunch time). If this had been an authentic Korean restaurant in Korea or at least had real Koreans managing it? It would not have happened and if did? It would have been once and then gone. The Koreans are as many cultures, very proud of their cuisine and take great pride in presenting it. The food came out pretty fast, compared to Vaga Bond, they do have the short rib, the waygu, kimchi rice which was different and I definitely enjoyed them. A nice looking place across from Coopers Hawk. We were at the Town Center and was looking for something new and different. We saw Gen, figured we'd give it a try. We didn't realize that this was a self cooking place. Staff was helpful in explaining how things work. They do put a lot of pressure on the up sale to the more expensive menu. We opted to stay with the standard. You can get as much food as you want on the menu. They do limit you to 4 items at a time. You can put in a new request almost immediately. You are cooking your own food on the cooktop built into the table. It does get hot. Good exhaust to keep smoke away. Once your cooktop gets fouled up, they are pretty quick to replace it for you. Overall, a good experience. The food was tasty. Probably need to work out a plan on what to order and when to order it instead of the mishmash sequence that we ordered. Service was prompt , we were advised about the specials as well. We sat at a booth because of the decor/design it was an intimate experience. Finally got to try this place out! Parking was plentiful and the atmosphere of the place was fun and busy! Our servers were really attentive and quick with bringing everything out. The food was pretty good! The only thing was that the rice was cold and kind of dense, which was great because I didn't fill up on rice but still was disappointing. Wanted to come here for a while after we heard about their soft opening. My husband heard about this place before as there's one in California and when he went there, he loved it! There were multiple servers assisting us that day and we didn't mind! Everything is set up for you to grill over you sit down. It is a cook-it-yourself restaurant so keep that in mind. Keep in mind that on weekends, even during lunch times, it's only Dinner pricing. For $30.95, you get AYCE that includes appetizers, sides, and a wide variety of meats. If you want to do premium meats, you can upgrade for an additional $20.00. We opted just for the regular AYCE dinner. It was a deal because it pretty much had all the meats we loved! Appetizers: Cheesy chicken katsu- 8/10: fried perfectly and had panko coating with the side of tonkatsu sauce. The cheese inside the batter was delicious and went so well with the chicken. The portion size was good too!! Korean fried chicken - 5/10: this was literally just chicken nuggets with some sauce on it...I wouldn't call this Korean fried chicken at all. It was decent but should be called chicken nuggets... Japchae- 7/10: pretty good/tasty and I loved how bouncy the glass noodles were. Loved the addition of the veggies and the flavor was great. It's on par with Japchae that I've eaten at other Korean restaurants. Tteokbokki - 7/10: they're rice cakes and I like how they were slightly grilled. I like my rice cakes in between chewy and crispy so the consistency was delightful (for me). The sweet sauce on top delicious as well. Salad - 8/10: their salad was refreshing. I'm not sure what dressing they put in it, but it was light, vinegary, and went well with the greens. The banchan (sides) were good too! We had kimchi, cucumber kimchi, radish kimchi, soy marinated water chestnuts???, and potato salad. My favorite was the potato salad! I had literally 6+ refills of it!! Korean potato salad is alot different from the standard potato salad. It's sweeter and depending on the KBBQ place, sometimes it's mashed or have chunks. They sometimes add carrots or even raisins to it as well. They were out of corn cheese that day so that was a bummer. We ate a ton of meats including Galbi (short ribs), Pork Jowl (pig cheek), squid steak, sliced angus beef brisket, beef bulgogi, spicy pork bulgogi, marinated wine, spicy, and also garlic pork belly, gopchang (large ox intestines marinated in a teriyaki sauce, my favorite!), pork short ribs, etc. All the meats were fresh and the marinated ones were all full of flavor and seasoned very well! I enjoyed the 3 dipping sauces too (sesame oil, green tea salt, and a house sauce (maybe shoyu ponzu?). The green tea salt was pretty divine and enhances the flavor of pretty much all the meats! You can ask for radish wraps, fresh garlic chips (for grilling), or rice for your meats as well. They do not skimp on the meats and seafood portion sizes at all! You definitely get what you pay for. My top favorites were the pork jowl (super buttery), gopchang, and squid steak with the green tea salt sprinkle. The squid steak just melted in my mouth. However, all the meats and seafood were delicious. Don't knock it out until you try the ox intestines, it's a different texture and fatty, but has so much umami flavor. It reminds of a softer sausage. The only small con for me was that the grill was constantly being changed a lot. I truly appreciate changing the grills when it's dirty but sometimes, we only had the clean grill on for 30 mins and it was changed. As you can imagine, each grill change means unintentional interruptions. I don't mind the grill changes, but maybe lower it down to like 55% of the time. A lot of flavor is lost when the grill is changed often, as the caramelization, char, and drippings from the previous, cooked meats are unable to be absorbed by the fresh ones. Also, I think they should have a cart nearby for grill changes. I noticed at every grill change, the server would grab it with some tongs and inform the other servers of a grill change by saying it loudly. Then they would walk off with it, leaving room for some oil drippings in the floor. When I got up to use the restroom, I was conscious of where I was walking so I don't accidentally slip on any oil drippings. I hope they will take this into consideration as it can be a safety issue. Overall, probably the best AYCE Korean BBQ place here so far in Jax. We will definitely come back again, but make sure you wear your sweat pants because you will definitely be rolling out with full, but happy stomachs! read more

Overall it was a fine experience. I don't care to return. Very pushy about the "premium meats" menu. A/C felt like it was off. I don't ever get hot in a restaurant, generally I'm iced out- here I was borderline sweating which just made the experience a little uncomfortable. My friend was profusely sweating, but he was also doing the majority of the cooking so that could play a part. Standard menu meats were great, appetizers were a good variety and overall very delicious. Food came out promptly, getting refills (kimchi, rice, water, napkins, etc) was a little more challenging. Ive tried different Korean bbq places and this is by far the worst. The place is in such a nice spot and the place itself is clean and aesthetically beautiful. 10/10 The service is not as great, we kept waiting long to get our order in . Put waiter kept forgetting the sides . We didn't get everything when we were supposed to , we had to ask to be provided things that were included in what we were paying for. The food was good but had to wait a while to get the next round . The place was empty and that should've been a red flag . Decided to try this new Korean BBQ place recently. The service was great. Josh our server explained their menu very thoroughly and was very attentive. We went on a Thursday and it wasn't packed at all. Josh helped us cut some of the meats and made sure to come by frequently to change out our grill. I had the Miami heat drink. It wasn't too bad but for me the drink itself was too sweet. The meats were all good and we even got the calamari which was also good. read more

Was excited to try out this spot because I've been to other gen locations, been there twice now because the first time was when they were fairly new and I always give grace to a place that's new. That being said even the most recent time being there the service was not great and the food was not great either. Super disappointed as other gen locations I've been to were awesome. read more

Came on 09Aug24 Food: rice 2/10, spicy bulgogi 4/10, yakki mandu 8/10, jap chae 0/10, regular bulgogi 5/10 (was alot more meats on table but the other stuff not being good turned me off from tasting) Drink: strawberry party bowl 8/10 Seating: came with party of 4 and placed in a small ass booth with no table space for all plates.
