We saw a post in the Jacksonville Fun, Eats & Drinks Facebook group that reminded us that it's been too long since we've been to Peony Asian Bistro so we fixed that over the weekend. They're at 10586 Old St Augustine Road in Mandarin with a nice size parking lot so their location is great and parking isn't a concern. I'll get to the food in a minute but I'll start by saying that before we opened our fortune cookies at the end, I jokingly said "I hope one of these says 'you will get your original Facebook account back". They didn't say that but I included a photo of both because I feel like they're close enough As far as food goes, we split the Peony Sampler for an appetizer and loved it. It definitely did it's job as a sampler because now we know we like all of their appetizers and would order any of them on their own in the future. I ordered Egg Drop Soup after that because it's a favorite of mine. I always add a little salt to their version of it but I add salt to a lot of soups so that may just be a "me" thing. I had the Sweet & Sour Pork with Fried Rice for my entree, which is the same things had last time and it's still great. Between the appetizer and the soup and the entree, I was hoping to have enough to take home for lunch tomorrow and I definitely did. My wife had the General Chicken. She really liked the sauce because it was sweet but has a little bit of spicy kick to it. She said the same thing I said about the chicken itself; she loved that it was big pieces of juicy white meat. She was also surprised by how much she liked the broccoli which made for one of those things where you could get a bite of everything at once. 1st time dining in at Peony, everyone was pleasant and polite. Not too busy around 4:30pm on a Saturday. We were at JAX Oriental Market and feeling hungry. So we decided to try this place since we always wanted to! We love Chinese cuisine too! We walked in and were greeted and seated immediately. Lots of smiles and the ambiance was cozy and warm. It was like walking into someone's home (a good thing!). We got the following: Appetizer: Krab Rangoon': 8/10 - pretty tasty krab rangoon and it was fried well! There was a lot of filling and it came with chili sauce on the side. Wasn't the best but it was good nonetheless. Entrees: Eggplant and chicken with garlic sauce: 9/10 -my husband got this and I could not stop taking bites off his plate. It comes in big portions with the entrée and rice separately. We had no idea the portion size was going to be that big! The sauce was garlicky, savory, and coated each chicken and eggplant beautifully. Each bite was filled with so much flavor and tip! Add some chili oil (ask your waiter/waitress for some) for some kick! I loved how the chili oil coated the rice, along with that delicious sauce! We couldn't stop eating as it was super delicious! Honey walnut shrimp: 7/10 - this was my entrée and while the shrimp was huge, there was not enough walnuts. What makes this dish is the caramelized walnuts and we wished there were more! The walnuts were huge but lack in quantity. The batter and fry on the shrimp was light, crispy, and the creamy mayo sauce was divine! However, we didn't get much shrimp either. Overall, a good place to get some Chinese food but it's not the best. it's on the pricier side too. We wouldn't go out of our way to come here to be honest but if we're in the area, we might stop by again. read more

Overall we had a good dining experience. The service was great and the food was pretty good. We started with crab rangoon and we laughed when they arrived at the table, because they were TINY. My dinner date liked them, but I thought they had too much onion (and I love onion!). We did agree that everything else was good - hot tea, egg drop soup, veggie eggrolls, and kung pao chicken. We've been coming here for years.. always have a good experience. The service and food quality are consistent and well executed. The atmosphere is no frills, but in my opinion adds to the experience. If you come on a Sunday, you'll find large families eating and laughing - it's a nice, buzzy vibe. My favorite dish is the Szechwan beef and my husband always gets the walnut shrimp. My dad has been searching for a quality sit down chinese restaurant like he used to go to in DC and this was such a good recommendation. We started with the crab Rangoon, chicken egg rolls and each having a small hot and sour soup. I was already full after the starters and soup, I can't imagine how big the large soup would be! By far the best Rangoon and hot & sour soup I've ever had!! Full of flavor and very fresh! We ordered fish with black bean sauce (not pictured), sizzling ribeye with black pepper sauce with fried rice and Szechuan beef with lo mein noodles for an up charge. The meals were super flavorful, tender and cooked perfectly. The service was outstanding and the staff was extremely friendly & attentive - our drinks were never empty and we didnt wait long for anything, which is hard to find these days! We have been wanting to try Peony and finally made it. Trust me I get it and it took way to long but glad we made it and found out about everything in the area as well as just this plaza. We came in around 6pm on a Saturday and had not problem getting a table. They have a large menu so there are options for everyone which is great. Very happy to see they have Peking Duck (even though we didn't get it that night but we will be back). We started with appetizers and went with some of the basics just to keep it simple for our first time. We went with the Krabmeat Rangoon and the Steamed Pork Dumplings. Both some out pretty quickly and were good. I will say we were not blown away by either but still good. For my meal I went with the General Chicken with Fried Rice which is pretty much General Tso's Chicken for anyone confused or interested. Our food came out pretty quickly and looked great. Large Crispy chunk of General Chicken and plenty of Broccoli. The Chicken was great. Saucy with great flavor and it didn't lose any of it's crisp from all the sauce. For sure could have eaten this everyday but the serving size was also great and really filled my up. The Fried Rice was just fine but didn't have a whole lot of flavor in my opinion. Ashley got the Szechuan Chicken which I loved. I think I liked it better then my General Chicken. The sauce one the Szechuan Chicken was great and I also loved that it was crispy which is not how must Szechuan Chicken I have had is. We got the half Peking duck (my mom had called in advance to make sure they would have it), fish and tofu hot pot, chow fun, bbq pork, and Chinese broccoli. The Peking duck was my favorite of course! My coworker and I went out to eat to prepare for a looong night at the office. He said he would like some delicious Chinese food and immediately, the Peony Asian Bistro came to mind. He got the Kung Pao chicken with fried rice, I got the sesame chicken with fried rice and we shared a side of steamed buns. The waitress was quick and attentive and added to the lovely atmosphere provided by the restaurant. The rice was very nicely flavored but plain enough as to not overpower the dish. I enjoyed the sweetness of the sesame chicken, the breading was nice and crispy. My coworker also enjoyed his dish, saying the veggies were cooked to perfection and not too 'mushy.' Just right. The chicken was tender and the sauce was very flavorful, enhanced by the peanuts in the dish. The steamed buns were a lovely side to sandwich the chicken and rice in between.
