I rarely leave reviews, but this visit was genuinely abysmal from start to finish. To be clear: our waitress was new, and she did her absolute best. She was kind, she tried, and none of this reflects on her. I gave her full grace -- this review is not about her. The problem was everything else. 1. Missing Menu Items They didn't have multiple meat items that were literally listed on the menu -- at a KBBQ restaurant. That alone was disappointing, but what made it worse was the attitude from the other staff member (the guy with dreads). When we asked if there were alternatives or substitutes, he didn't offer a single thing. No apology. No explanation. No effort to help. Just total indifference. 2. Burnt Grill for 25+ Minutes My grill has been completely burnt since the first round of meat -- going on almost 25 minutes -- and nobody offered a grill change. Not once. We were literally trying to cook meat on a charred, unusable grill. For a place where grilling is the entire experience, this is just unacceptable. 3. Zero Support for the New Waitress She was clearly trying, but the rest of the staff and management gave her no support. It shows. And it affects the customers directly. Overall, this was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. The lack of communication, lack of service, missing menu items, and the burnt grill sitting in front of us the entire time made the visit unbelievably disappointing. gen korean bbq is one of the cheapest options for kbbq in sacramento. their lunch deal is ~$22 and regular dinner price is ~$31. there are slightly more options available for dinner, and they do offer a premium menu at a higher price. service really depends on the server. we've had variable service at lunchtime, where multiple items were forgotten and we couldn't find our server at all, but we've also had great service at dinner, where our server was super friendly and checked in on us frequently. i haven't ever seen the restaurant super crowded, and there's a lot of space. my favorite meats were the woo beasal (beef belly) and honey soy beef belly, even though they were chewy. the honey soy beef belly had a lightly sweet marinade, which was good but similar to a lot of the other meats, like the beef bulgogi or hawaiian marinated ones. i also liked the premium chadol (angus brisket) because i like to dip unmarinated meat in sauces, but it was a little dry. my boyfriend and i both enjoyed the hangjungsal (pork cheek), which was seasoned with salt and pepper and less chewy than the beef. the spicy samgyubsal (pork belly) was flavorful and had a sweet and very lightly spicy gochujang-based marinade. the garlic samgyubsal was good - the marinade tasted like a garlicky version of the honey soy beef belly. i generally prefer pork belly leaner and thinner, and the pork belly here was overall on the fattier and thicker side. most of the other meats were fine too. the beef bulgogi wasn't great quality, but the marinade was pretty standard. the flavor of the gen signature yangnyum galbi was also standard, but it was just really thin. the spicy pork bulgogi had a tasty gochujang-based marinade. the red wine samgyubsal was very unique and had a slightly bitter flavor from the wine. i didn't mind it, but it wasn't my favorite. the only meat i didn't like was the gen premium steak, which was extremely tough to chew. gen also offered some interesting sides. we liked the cheese kimchi fried rice, although it could've had more kimchi flavor. the japchae was just okay - a little bland. my boyfriend and i both didn't like the hotteok, which wasn't like normal hotteok; they were more like fried puffy donuts with powdered sugar on top. the kimchi was okay, although not the freshest. i did like the sweet korean potato salad, which had some kernels of corn in it. we were given green tea salt, sesame oil, and chadol sauce for the meats, but they also had other sauce options on the menu. i'm always partial to chadol sauce, and i liked it here. i also really enjoyed the green tea salt, which was great in combination with the sesame oil. in addition to their huge menu, they also offered a variety of drinks, including beer, soju, and cocktails. i tried the watermelon pineapple cocktail, which was great. it was fruity and sweet, although i could definitely taste the alcohol. it also came with a tajin rim and a small piece of pineapple. there were lots of other fun cocktail options too! overall, i appreciate the extensive meat options on the menu, which i think is gen's main appeal, because the meat quality is worse than other places. a lot of the marinated meats also have similar sweet flavors, so there's not a lot of variety in terms of palette. it is a cheaper place to get your kbbq fix though, and i don't really care that much more for higher quality meats when i want kbbq. read more

They also did not bring them out to us so we had to ask after seeing some other tables with sides not listed. We needed to ask for sauces and they brought them out but did not tell us what they were. The presentation of the dishes looked great but did not compensate nearly enough for the lack of decent service. Have tried a couple of Gen locations and this one in Sacramento is my favorite location. We went in around 5:30 pm on a Saturday and luckily, it wasn't crowded so we got seated immediately. We ordered about 4 rounds trying different meats from the bulgogi, sirloin, brisket, marinated meats as well as other options with the shrimp, soondubu and hotteok. Our favorite meats from the rounds were definitely the bulgogi which always has a rich flavor and came in good portions and the marinated meats such as the red wine pork belly, garlic pork belly and honey soy beef belly. The pork bellies usually came one piece at a time and would take a long time to cook but they were thick and the unique marinades really brought out the softness in the meat. The shrimp and the hotteok were surprises for us. The shrimps came in plates of 4 and they were pretty jumbo sized. It was our first time trying hotteok and they were so tasty as it came out hot with a chewy sweet center. On the other hand, we didn't like the sirloin that much since it was an entire piece of steak, becoming pretty tough to bite and the soondubu which tasted very watered down and didn't have much ingredients in it. He comes up and says he's in charge and I let him know it was not ok the way he handled the situation and all he said was "I spoke to the kitchen manager about the shrimp and she said it looked good to her" then proceeds to give me a fake number to a manager and says well now that you know my name you can call her and I don't have a number to corporate for you and wiped his hands clean. He was very unprofessional about the situation and showed no compassion to me being worried about consuming raw shrimp. read more
