First of all, our server Jarrett was very good. He did a great job. Especially since we had a party of 9. Now... for everything else... this is a very white Korean restaurant... everything has been changed snd none of it tasted authentic. I personally wont come back or recommend it. The menu is a qr code that you have to scan. It is hard to read. You have to ask for sauces and Banchan. The amount of meat that comes out every time.. Especially for a party of 9... is extremely small. The bulgogi was good flavor wise... the galbi was ok. The Dwejang chigae was lacking and needed more authentic flavor. They tried to mask it by adding a ridiculous amount of jalapeños. I counted 5 slices per little cup. The kimchi fried rice did not taste like it should... the japchae was a huge fail. Not only did it lack flavor, they cut it up into little itty bitty pieces. The mandu is okay... So if you are not used to authentic Korean food, I'm sure this place would be fine... but for someone who wants authentic.... go elsewhere.

My parents wanted a place to go to celebrate Mother's Day a couple weeks after to avoid crowds. We chose something we had liked in the past based on what my mom wanted to try. She likes the experience and atmosphere of Korean BBQ, and liked this location in the past. My mom came for beef tongue as a favorite years ago, and sad to see it is a premium charge. The menu itself seemed pricy, and the experience was average in our opinion. This location isn't close to where we live, so likely a pass in the future for us unless in the area.

Visiting from Vegas, I was a little apprehensive of dining at Gen Korean BBQ - Tempe location not knowing how parking would be etc. Luckily, there's a lot of parking and a pretty nice shopping center with lots of eatery spots. I'm a Korean BBQ fan so since my daughter wanted to try Gen, I said why not. I've been to other Gen locations in different cities. The concept of AYCE and modern /hipster atmosphere. Colorful lights, larger tables to accommodate 6 in a party amd a high top communal looking table. Got on the Yelp waitlist and my check in time was 5:37 pm. I got there, checked in and waited. After 10 minutes, I went to the front to ask how long the wait will be and she said about 25 minutes. I was like huh, the Yelp app said to check in at the front which I did to wait another 25 minutes. She then said we're you on the waitlist? I said yes then she said hold on, she walked over to a table then came back and said your table is ready. Ok... I really felt bad for our server. He was working hard but unfortunately, we hardly saw him. That made my experience a very frustrating one. I always kept looking around and luckily for me, one of the MODs was fixing a burner next to our table. If it wasn't for him, Gen would have received a 1 Star rating. I forgot his name but he's bald and very nice. Thanks to him!!! The meat selections were good. We had the kalbi, pork belly, brisket and some sides. The Jap chae unfortunately lacked flavor. I added a lot of sesame oil. The house sauce was also delicious!!! I had to order extra. It went well with the meat. I didn't see if they had this but just cheese instead of corn cheese would have also been good with the meat. Overall, not a spot I'd return to. There are far more better AYCE KBBQ that I've had in AZ.

It's a little bit disappointed I been craving for Korean BBQ and do research for the places to go and we picked this place and i there for dinner and add more +20 each person but what we like to eat is just ran out Like beef belly or any of belly are out! No fair at all and we still get charged for full price!!! Not worth to go back

Usually, when I go to gen, it's for a special occasion. I usually get the premium because why not experience all of what they have to offer. I am taking this opportunity to be very clear about the experience. For me, there's three parts of the experience, the people, the food, and the environment, On this particular night, our server was busy as they should be, but very communicative though. It was the end of the night, so the music wasn't going, & the vibe was pretty low-key everybody trying to get out of here you know "I gotta go home cause we close in like 10 minutes", type stuff. All things I get, but but what killed me was the food, We ordered the chicken and specialty fries that you see above twice. The picture that you see is how it came out the first time I should've took it after picture because it wasn't much better, but it was just as cold and this time the cheese was melted. It was lukewarm and cold at the same time. The awkwardness of having the waitress take it back twice and no one doing quality checks is crazy work. We end up just putting the fried chicken on the grill. in between that, we end up ordering more stuff just because we're waiting for the correction and even the second time it was a full miss. The things that were not supposed to be on the grill and already made were the coldest items, So cold like freezer cold Long story long I paid more than I wanted to and the service was all spotty so the experience was shot. This kind of feels like a championship team that is made to make it with all the superstars, but they don't win any championships. Head scratching, boots lifting in one step out the door. I think gen has lost its sizzle.

I was really disappointed by this restaurant. I came here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner after seeing ads online. As soon as we got there it took a while for the server to come over. We order waters, alcoholic drinks, all the meats, and appetizers. We first tried to order hot sake but the server said they were out of every kind of sake. When our server left she forgot to start the grill. The first thing to come out was our raw meat (grill still not turned on), then the alcoholic drinks, then our server came back with the waters and finally turned the grill on. Even though the meat came out first we had to wait a while for the grill to heat up before we could cook it. Every single one of the meats were fatty and had a strange texture. I would NOT recommend the bulgogi - though usually this is my favorite style of meat at kbbq. It reminded of ground beef? Instead of thinly sliced beef. The pork belly was super thick cut and very fatty. The chadol was thin cut but super fatty and mushy as well. For the appetizers, the dumplings and popcorn chicken were decent but they seemed like the kind you get at the store in the frozen section, just deep fried and served like that. Not to mention the rice was super mushy and overcooked. The best thing we had was the pineapple coconut margarita (which was $18), the short ribs, and the japchae. I just feel like for the price of this (overall our dinner was about $120) the quality should be much better! The decor is nice and very modern, but they should invest more time and money into the service and food quality. I would not return ):

This was our first time to Gen Korean BBQ. It is conveniently located in Tempe Marketplace. The restaurant offers plenty of seating but it filled up quick. There are plenty of options on the "regular" menu but the add ons can get expensive if you don't keep track. The "premium" menu offers additional meat options with different marinades. We chose the regular menu. We were able to choose four meat options at a time, and were allowed to order additional meats as we finished the previous order. Our party of 6 was able to get filled til our hearts content in about an hour and forty minutes. The service was quick and attentive. Drink glasses were filled before asking and used plates were cleared from the table regularly. I consider this a spot for special occasions and not a daily lunch or dinner option.

Came to try this new location since we lived in Phoenix and would visit the Tempe location all the time! Was pleasantly surprised with their menu and the quality food. Super delicious

One of the best korean bbq places in Phoenix. All you can eat for 1hr 30 mins. They have a wide selection of food, even seafood options which is nice. The atmosphere is beautiful though it can be a little loud. I love going here.

Food was great. Loved the all you can eat aspects and the drinks were awesome. The service was a little slow but it just felt like it's because they were busy so nothing too long. It helps to be able to join the waitlist early.

Gen Korean BBQ House Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Gen Korean BBQ House

Do they do half portions? So many options I want to try but it's usually just my husband and I and we definitely can't eat all of the meats!

Yes! I ask for half the portion all the time when we are close to getting full, lol!

Is it buffet style for sides? Like can you get a side of rice or salad with your meats? & if so does it cost extra?

All you can eat but not buffet style

Do you guys have rice paper?

    Yes, it's on their menu

Can I pay separately if with a party, or does everyone go on the same bill and one card is charged?

They will only take one card per table.

    Are the appetizers cooked already?

Most of them. The corn cheese is cooked on grill

Is it still charged per head and then unlimited meat? Some of the menus or pictures have me confused.

Yes! It is still priced per person for all you can eat. The price will vary depending on time of day (i.e. lunch or dinner)

When is the happy hour? I recall having buy one get another for a penny, but don't remember when.

Do you offer a la carte?

No they don't. It's an AYCE establishment.

Do you get white rice as well here?

Yea, they offer white rice as one of their sides.

What food options they serve at the bar?

You cannot cook your own food at the bar, so doing the all you can eat option there doesn't have much of a point. The bar is just for drinks.

Why can we join the waitlist only if we're within 15 miles?

Probably because their turnover is normally pretty fast. If you're not close, they don't want to hold up a table.

Is there a party minimum ? I would like to eat here but I am an out of towner solo traveling and I have no one to eat with.

Not at all! There are small booths and tables where they absolutely accommodate singles

Any gluten free options ? Worried a sauces and marinades having gluten.

The sauces will all likely have gluten. You can ask for unmarinated meat. As for sides, you're pretty much only ok with kimchi, cucumbers, seaweed and soybean sprouts.

What's the max size of a party this location can accommodate? If I'm celebrating a bday with 8-10 people is this okay?

Yes- they can accommodate, but I do not believe they take reservations. I would go on a off time & day as their waiting list can be hours long. See my review for more details.

Do they allow a small dog to sit with me?

No pets allowed. We asked for our little dog also.

What is the price for lunch and dinner?

Lunch only is M-Th and is 20.99 Dinner is 26.99

Is your lunch special just on weekdays or weekends too?

Unfortunately the lunch special is only on the weekdays until 3 PM.

Do they have anything for desert? We are going for a birthday and want to know if they have like ice cream or any desert so we can celebrate?

For birthdays they come out and sing to you and give you some ice cream. I went for my sons birthday in December. He loved it

Other than the price, what's the difference between lunch and dinner?

Lunch menu has like 5 less items than the dinner menu.

I had weight loss surgery and have a child menu card from the dr. Can I eat at the child price or have to pay the adult price?

Hi! So my friend also had the same or close to same surgery as you. And they charge her full price each time. But you can always call to double-check cause I don't believe… Read more

I'll preface this review by saying I have very high standards when it comes to BBQ. I am from Houston after all. Caldwell County BBQ very much lived up to the hype. It's no surprise their reviews are so good. Ambiance (5/5): Caldwell County BBQ serves Texas-style BBQ. I felt right at home. There's a lot of Texan decor and the sort of ambiance you would expect at a BBQ joint. It's a spacious restaurant with plenty of seating outside and a decent amount of seating inside. We sat inside. One of the things they do well is keeping the A/C blasting both indoors and outdoors (while you're likely going to wait in line) along with misters. Definitely something you need in Phoenix! Service (4/5): I hate waiting in line. Though it's not unusual at popular BBQ spots, I still wish places like this would hire a couple of more people to make the line move faster (or even completely eliminate the lines). We probably waited in line for about 20 minutes. They have a water cooler along the route, but it was all out. Something the staff should check on a little more frequently. With all this being said, Caldwell County is well worth the wait. Drinks (5/5): Whenever I'm at a BBQ joint, I'm looking for sweet tea. Which they have here. Plus your standard assortment of soft drinks and alcohol, with a focus on beer. Food (5/5): BBQ joints typically have you pay by weight or by plates (one meat, two meats, three meats, etc.). Caldwell does it by the pound unless you go with a sandwich, loaded baked potato, etc. What's nice is they also have a family pack for 4 which comes with brisket, pulled pork, and your choice of ribs, sausage, or one other protein which is escaping me. Plus two large pint-size sides. We rolled with this option as it's a good deal (brisket, pulled pork, and St. Louis style ribs with corn casserole and mac and cheese). White bread, pickles, onions, and jalapenos are available free of charge. There are three BBQ sauces at each table: their classic BBQ, spicy, and AZ gold). We also added a quarter pound of the AZ burnt ends. Man, these are some quality meats. Brisket is the true test of Texas BBQ and the shining star. The brisket here isn't the best I've ever had but it's quite respectable. The sweet and spicy AZ burnt ends were delicious too. The ribs were tender and had a nice sweet glaze on them. The pulled pork was my least favorite, but still quite good. The sides are solid, though they could be a bit better. The mac and cheese was too peppery for my taste and the corn casserole was too sweet. Like pretty much all craft BBQ these days, Caldwell County BBQ isn't cheap. But the quality is there. This is the type of place that I would come back to again and again. They also have a location in Peoria though this one is the original. And I hear they don't run out of meats as other BBQ joints do (especially in Texas). That's a big plus! It's always a bummer when a BBQ joint is out of something you want. If you haven't been to Caldwell County BBQ, change that quick. Yeehaw!

I came the Sunday before Memorial Day and waited about an hour. They'll let you order drinks while in line and there's water. They sold out of pork belly right when I reached the front so I hope to try that next time. All of the employees were incredibly friendly. I got the two meat plate with fatty brisket and pulled pork with mac 'n cheese and grits as sides. I added on the prickly pear lemonade and pecan pie. The meats rivaled the BBQ I've had in Texas. The mac was incredibly cheesy and flavorful, and they know how to do grits right. Even with the jalapeños they were not spicy at all and I'm a wimp when it comes to spice. The pecan pie was the best I've ever had. The filling was custardy thick - I've never had a pie like it. We spoke with one of the employees for while regarding what to order and about Spring Training while we were in line. As we got in, you order at the counter and pick what you want. The employees are cutting up the food in front of you and weighing it. The inside area has limited seating and it's very narrow. Outside theres a good amount of seating but filled up right away. I ordered the beef rib for my dad and I to share, a plate for myself with brisket and turkey. I got cole slaw and mac sald on the side, both were kind've whatever for me. The turkey honestly is a sleeper pick, it was delicious and more flavorful that I thought. Brisket was mouthwatering and so tender but that beef rib lived to the hype. It fell off the bone and had the perfect fattiness to tender ratio. We enjoyed the outside and feasted but it's quite expensive like all BBQ. The quality was fresh and I would definitely recommend if you are in the area. I don't eat BBQ a lot so I don't have a huge sample size for whats good or not but I loved it!

It's all good, but not the best by any means. If I ever find myself in that area again I'd go back, but it's not good enough to go out of the way. Had the two meat platter with pork short ribs and sliced brisket with beans and potato salad as sides. The potato salad was average, nothing special, but good enough. Same for the beans; yes, there was meat in it, but not much of it. The pork rib was good, tender enough. Now, the sliced brisket was VERY good. Nicely smoked/cooked, very tender. You have a choice of three sauces all in plastic squeeze bottles at your table. I tried them all [spicy, house (sweet) and mustard]. All three were as good as you would get anywhere else. It's counter service only and they have ample inside and outside seating. Plenty of parking.

While we were waiting, someone even came around with samples, which definitely made the line more manageable. When we finally ordered, we got the two-meat plate with ribs and brisket, plus a side of the house sausage. I'd highly recommend adding the sausage, it ended up being my favorite out of everything we tried. There's also ample seating (both indoor and outdoor). Overall, I'd definitely come back again if I were visiting the area.

Our server was initially very attentive and got him his wine and me my beer. This is where the service fell apart. The server never came back This is May in Phoenix. If the server was overloaded with other tables we could understand. This was not the case. There were 3 other patrons in the restaurant. All the servers and other employees were at the hostess stand and there were 4 of them. A bartender could tell visually that our drinks at that point were almost empty. However, we were not her customers Fair enough! However, at 4:15 pm I would expect our server to have come back to check on us. Also, not begrudging employees working double shifts. But, 2 other employees eating wings in the bar. All things forgiven if I had gotten decent service. I was going to eat dinner. But, given the service climate. I decided to cut my losses and pay for my beverages and leave . I would have commented to the Manager on duty if one has been visible. I have been to other locations of BobbyQ's and had a great experience. It's just a shame the employee's and management at this location don't care. Even though this location is only 3.5 miles from my house. I doubt I will be back. It might be a while, but will go to the 27th ave location. Good luck with this location You might want to fix your service challenges or you might go the way of Zen Burger. People will only put up with so much even if the food is exceptional. Don't rest on your Laurel's.
