No other staff cared to offer a better option when I asked. So we left. 1 Star - Worst Customer Service and Management I had one of the worst dining experiences ever at Gene's Bistro. The customer service was terrible from the moment I walked in. The servers had a bad attitude, were completely unprofessional, and acted like they were doing me a favor just by taking my order. The food was just as disappointing--bland, poorly prepared, and absolutely not worth the price. On top of that, they forced me to buy a bottle of water, which is ridiculous and shows how little they care about customers. Management was no better. Instead of fixing the issues, they ignored them and allowed the staff to continue treating customers poorly. It's clear that customer service is not a priority here. The manager on the left of the first picture seriously needs training on how to handle an unsatisfied customer. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, he focused more on defending his employees than actually fixing the problem. It's clear the owner doesn't care either--being inside an airport means they assume customers won't return, so they treat people however they want. Had a 5 hour layover and was looking for a place to sit and have dinner. My fiance decided on this place. We stood in line for approx 20-25 minutes before being seated. Lots of flights were delayed so it was pretty crowded. Service was quick. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich and chicken wrap, both with fries. The alcoholic drink menu prices was OUTRAGEOUS so I chose to pass on that. The food came within a reasonable time frame and honestly it was surprisingly VERY GOOD! It didn't taste like I was eating at an airport. The pork was juicy with flavor and the wrap was fried and seasoned quite well. Hamburgers appear to be pre-cooked and only served well done, our server wasn't exactly oozing charm, in fact when we questioned my husband's $26 drink, she said she didn't make it. We have not seen her since. It's a shame Southwest only flies out of terminal C because this place is about the only option. read more

Genes Bistro is near B1 gate at Midway Airport. We stopped in for lunch and were served immediately by one of the best waiters we've ever had. His name is Tan. He was efficient, friendly and super anxious to please. We ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a chicken finger wrap. Both were delivered in what seemed like one minute! The plates were huge, hot and came with sweet potato fries that were a definite notch above normal. If you are in Midway and want a great lunch I highly recommend this place. I had a delicious buffalo chicken sandwich and fries here before a flight - just what I needed. Service was fast and friendly and the food is decent. A good large fried chicken patty (frozen I'm sure) and satisfying fries. They were frozen too, but fried fresh and hot. Savory buffalo sauce and plenty of real blue cheese crumbles. No complaints! I like that you can sit at the bar as a single and there's enough room for your bags. As far as airport food goes, quite decent. She has the best personality and super efficient. EVELIA is such and people person and took my jokes. She filled my coffee and I told her "decaf"? She got nervous when I joked with her on that... told her to call 911.... All and all I was joking and she laughed and was super fun joking with her. In all seriousness... Poor airport restaurants! They get no love. I suppose it's because people are in a bad mood trying to catch their flight, and are bothered if it takes a few minutes to get service. But Gene's bistro is actually a pretty nice place to eat. It's light and airy, and has decent service. The menu was very limited on the day I was there, with about half of the items not available, but I was warned in advance, and advised to have the pulled pork sandwich. This was a great recommendation. It was well stuffed, had a good bun, and a delicious barbecue sauce. In fact, I had barbecue in Chicago just the day before, and the sandwich at Gene's was much better. Of course one can always complain about the fact that a rather meager size glass of Chardonnay costs $25, but it is an airport. read more

The hostess seated me at the bar despite me explaining that I was underage and was only ordering food. Then, the bartender proceeded to publicly yell and humiliate me, and blame the issue on me despite the hostess saying it was okay for me to sit there-- she did not ask for my age or ID prior to sitting me down. I was very polite, asked if there was anywhere else to sit, that I was instructed to sit here, and I was faced with utmost disrespect and impoliteness. I quote, "I'm going to lose my license so either you go to the back of the line or you can find another restaurant," as she yelled this, people in the line turned their head, people at the bar noticed, and I was speechless. I was forced to get up from my seat, began to cry because I had only been nice and polite to her (I'm very soft spoken, and I did not know how to react to being treated like that). I had just gotten up and left the restaurant, because she continuously had told me to leave, that "her license is going to be revoked" and that I needed to go back in line and wait again, after I had already waited 15 minutes to be seated from the start. I was confused on the reason behind sitting me at the bar from the start, only to face disrespect from the employees who caused this from the start. Please do not come here. The bartender was an older white woman, and did not take any initiative to reseat me or show any kindness whatsoever, despite me telling her I don't drink and didn't intend on it after being sat there. My 12-year-old son and I arrived at Gene's Bistro at 9:10 PM after a long flight and a delayed connection. He was starving, and we were relieved to see what looked like a nice sit-down restaurant still open. The posted hours clearly said they closed at 10:00 PM -- and to make it more confusing, the place was still busy with people dining when we arrived. Despite that, we were immediately turned away by an unprofessional, disheveled employee who told us they were closing at 9:30. I pointed out the posted hours, but she just said, "Well, we're closing at 9:30," and made no effort to be helpful. I asked to speak with the manager, and a man named Marcus -- who looked just as uninterested -- came over, barely standing upright while leaning against the wall. I asked if they were really closing early and if there was a contact I could call to speak with someone higher up. He confirmed they were closing and said there was a number I could call, but he "didn't know it." This is from the manager. For a place that looks like it's trying to be upscale, the staff seemed sloppy and indifferent, and the customer service was nonexistent. The restaurant was clearly still running with active tables, which made the refusal to seat us even more frustrating. Airport dining is already hit or miss, but Gene's Bistro somehow manages to fall below even the lowest expectations.
