I took my Thunderbird in several years ago for a list 5 or 6 of relatively small repairs. He said that he could start it in about a week. After 2 weeks he said that he would start it next week. More time passed. I called again, got voice mail. More weeks passed, I went there and he said it would be ready in a week. Two more weeks passed. I went back, he (apologized, I think) and said it would be ready in a week. 2 or 3 more weeks passed. I went to the shop and he wasn't there. I went by again and he wasn't there. I was furious. After 4 months, I went and got the car. He was rude. Virtually nothing was done. What a horrible experience. read more

Discovered an incredible mechanic today thanks to San Diego Classic Thunderbirds Club we just joined. Genessee Auto Care on Claremont, John Martin. He loves Chevies most but the shop 4 lifts, is half old domestic and half newer cars. He is skilled and very reasonable. I went to have him go over the new Thunderbird as I took the place on the rack from a Falcon Ranchero. He fixed three Japanese SUV AC's while I was there and he taught me Few things. We went in for a Clean Truck Check, required by CARB. I have many heavy duty trucks and pay $60.00 for the check all the time. This location charged us $200 for a 5 minute upload to the California Air Resource Board. When I called Eddie about the price, he said that is the price for one truck. John took the time to talk to me over the phone to give me sound and honest advice when he really had nothing to gain by doing so - my car was already repaired and I was ready to clear smog (long story). Regardless, he made me feel SO comfortable throughout our conversations and I was able to bring my car to him to look at as well as have his partner/neighbor perform my smog check. I have a Jeep wrangler that has (up until recently) always been used as more of a desert/adventure toy than a primary commute vehicle. My dad and I worked on the Jeep and took it on trips up until his passing last March. This November, my main car needed to be retired so it was time to promote the Jeep! The Jeep had a check engine light on and a few other problems that had been around for a while, but I had neglected it while grieving the loss of my dad. Luckily my fiancé has been going to John at Genesee Auto Care for over 10 years and highly recommended his work. I called up John and immediately felt in good hands. I took the Jeep to John and he walked me through getting a Temporary Operating permit to make sure I could legally move the vehicle where I needed to without getting it impounded. He then worked on everything that needed to be fixed and communicated incredibly clearly throughout the whole process. I was blown away by how honest, up-front, efficient and kind he and his staff were during the whole process. It is very rare to find someone who is so incredible at their job and continuously takes care of the customer like John and his team at Genesee Auto Care. He put effort into my vehicle as if it was his own, and it meant the world to me. Automotive maintenance is so costly these days, but John kept this repair so affordable I was shocked. I was having a very busy day that involved a lot of driving, including taking my toddler to preschool, work meetings, appointments and then picking her up. While I was on the freeway I heard something start dragging underneath my car and when I looked, the plastic panel had come unscrewed. I called Genesee Auto Care from a recommendation, and even though they were very busy and didn't have any appointments available, they told me to come in and they'd fix it for me. I pulled up and they fixed it quickly, knowing I was in a hurry, and didn't even charge me a dime!! I am so impressed with the service, and most importantly the genuine care for my situation. We purchased a classic car for my wife at the top of the pandemic, a 1964 Thunderbird. We had multiple problems with the starter that was causing aggravation and we stopped driving the car. One of my neighbors was walking by and asked why we weren't driving the car. We explained that we were on the waiting list at a different mechanic and had been for 9 months. He immediately told me to call up John and he would get everything fixed properly and reasonably. I called in and set up our appointment for 1 week later, not 9 months. When I dropped off the car I met John and quickly liked and trusted him. He called me in the afternoon and explained everything that he found wrong with the car. I picked it up 48 hours after I dropped it off and they had put the proper starter in it, repaired an exhaust leak, and fixed our leaky air shocks. The car ran like an absolute champ and John's pricing was fantastic. He found lots of loose bolts throughout the car and tightened them all up. We will be customers for life with all of our vehicles. They've moved to Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Same thing though, these guys know their stuff. Only problem is there are 3 auto repair joints in the same place, it's hard to find parking. John and Rich do great work at a reasonable price. Never feel like they are trying to scam me and it probably wouldn't be hard to do as I know little about cars. I have an old car and, at one point, it needed a fix that involved taking out transmission. Cost more than car is worth and John told me that.
