I've had work meetings here and it's been wonderful. Brides beware! The only thing I was not satisfied with is that I had a hard time blocking off rooms for my wedding which is being held on the next street block. I already had a contract with the Sheraton, but wanted one more hotel for guests to have flexibility. The sales manager gave me a hard time and wouldn't reserve any rooms, unless I was 100% certain that my guests would reserve here. How can I be certain of that? I understand, they can't make other business if I have it reserved, but to me, that was weak promotion. If I were a guest myself, sure, I could guarantee it. The Genesse Grand Hotel was not all it could be. Rooms, were not outright dirty, but dingy. Housekeeping insisted on having morning staff meeting in the hall. Old building, doors not sound proof, sound travels. Not good. Shower head, not installed properly. There were no deadbolt lock on the door-big security breach. Finally, the Genesse Grand Hotel charged $300 + on night one, and about $120 on the second night. WHY you might ask? Because SYRACUSE University had it's alumni weekend. Not right. Really GENESSE GRAND HOTEL. During a storm, I do not expect the grocery store inflate prices for water, I also do not expect hotels to exploit its customers. Do not stay here. For your own sake. Do not believe the fake claims to the contrary. There was obviously construction and, in fairness, that is necessary, so I am going to try to stay to the basics. At check in, I was made to wait while the only person at the desk spoke on the phone for 5 to 10 minutes, with not so much as a "excuse me, I will be with you in a moment." Even automated machines say that. It became obvious that another employee, standing near us initially, went back behind the desk to do something, but for some reason, didn't help us with check in, then returned to standing behind us, now awkwardly. The hallway to the room was obviously not cleaned and, frankly, filthy. It was in the upper 80s, but the AC wasn't on til I put it on. The toilet in room was obviously not cleaned. We decided not to shower there and remove the duvet while sleeping, because we were suspicious of the cleanliness. No fridge, no place to secure anything, and (!) no chairs. At check out, no one was there at 7:30 am, but there was a sign saying, "I am currently assisting another guest and will return momentarily. Thank you for your patience." Eventually showed up and I was grateful to be out of there. read more

Not what I expected from the web site. The staff were very nice, however the rooms were small and bear, there was no temperature control there fore the room was hot. Just over all for our first time in Syracuse not the accommodations I expected. I would chose differently next time. read more

I stayed at the Genesee Grand at the very last minute after stranded at the Syracuse Airport, which is a short car ride away. I opted for the hotel based on advertising of new renovations and luxury accommodations and looked forward to the stay as a perk for being stranded over night. Almost each person with whom I dealt, from the initial reservation to the front desk staff to even the manager, was vague and unhelpful. My first room had a broken window, a piece of wood with a nail in it on the floor by the bed, it faced a parking lot (headlights shine in) and a broken stone wall, had a TV on the fritz and a small possible blood stain on the pillow sham. I requested a higher floor room and was moved quickly and without issue. The second room was better than the first, but by the next morning I discovered that the shower backed up, which was really unclean and unpleasant. There also was no wastebasket in the bathroom. The bar/lounge area was alright and the waitress there was quite friendly and pleasant; they encouraged me to not venture far at all outside the hotel on my own as the area around the University is not the safest. My food was adequate - basic small plates and salads. The wine selection was ok. The final straw came upon checking out and confirming a complimentary shuttle to the airport. I arranged for the shuttle space the night before because when making my reservation, I was told this was a free service - important to me since I opted to not stay at the actual airport. When I called in advance in the morning, I was told "I'm sorry, the shuttle has already been booked for another group. We can call you a taxi." When I argued that I had arranged this before, they claimed there was no record of it, but I stated I had spoken the night before with a "Stephanie." I was then told, "Stephanie doesn't work here anymore." I said that didn't make sense and described the woman and was then told, "Maybe someone was wearing her name tag." I considered this a horrible response and really discouraging to think I had been talking to someone who was hiding their name for a reason. After nearly an hour arguing at the desk, complaining about the poor room and stating I didn't appreciate the attitude and denial from the staff, the manager eventually granted my request that the hotel pay for the necessary taxi to the airport. The local taxi driver said he had not heard good things about the recent renovations, and at the airport when my travel partner and I shared our frustration, the gate attendant said "Ick - why did you stay there? I've been there only for a gross wedding reception." Stay at the Genesee Grand at your own risk. It's an expensive mistake and a waste of time. I should have stayed at the airport and not bothered to call back after the first time they hung up on me. read more

First room nice but too noisy. Could hear the people walking around above me which also made the wall heater shake noisily and reverberate a lot in my room. I called the front desk and they quickly changed my room. New room was smaller and the heating unit not working well. It's 27 degrees out and I'm laying there in that comfy bed with a hat on and my sweats. The heater would blow out only luke warm air despite setting the thermometer to 90. Lots of cheaply done fluffy stuff displayed in a showy fashion. Not my taste. Not so sure I would stay here again. Staff accommodating and nice. Room comfy but freezing. Not digging my stay here. read more

After a long day of travel, I arrived to the hotel following a 30 minute late taxi pickup- I arrived to the front desk, received my keys, and kindly, but specifically requested the agent to confirm my room was not near an elevator. She verbally agreed. In her blatant disregard, I walked across to the other building, got on the elevator, went to my room and found that I was not only near a regular elevator, but my room was directly in front of a service elevator. This meant I had to trek all the way back to the front desk, after a long day of traveling, after making a simple, "specific" request that wasn't honored simply after the desk agent agreed. Being near an elevator, I find that I'm typically disturbed by house keeping or other guests, and I happened to be very tired. She did provide a better room location this time. The, next morning, after calling down to the front desk to speak with a supervisor- I found her service attitude was also less than accommodating. She informed me the taxi being late wasn't their fault because their van stopped running (okay). And after explaining my situation regarding my room, she seemed to merely be annoyed. She seemed defensive and almost unwilling to provide anything for my discomfort and inconvenience. The service recovery here is terrible. After working in a hotel as a front desk agent for years, I understand the power of quality service. I was appalled and underwhelmed by the service provided to me here, as I'd heard this was an "upscale" hotel. If they make a mistake on their end, don't expect them to take responsibility without putting up a fight. Smh. I was so turned off, I didn't even have the breakfast I was offered, after I had to make the suggestion! Lol. However, the rooms are comfortable, nice decor, and the wifi is free. I personally enjoyed the lighting effects in the bathrooms. Lol. read more

My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night, and we couldn't have had a more lovely experience. The staff treated us with every kindness, especially once they found out we were newlyweds. Our room was huge, beautiful, clean, and the amenities were exactly what we needed. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone; I've stayed there before, and it is always accommodating, but it made our night truly magical. read more

This hotel was a joke and they absolutely love to price gouge whenever they can. If I could give this place negative stars, I would! I have stayed here before and paid $85 per night. When my daughter recently graduated from Syracuse University, I paid $430 per night. Talking about taking advantage of people! The only reason I stayed in this dump was because I kept hitting re-dial over a year ago for graduation and somehow an actual person answered the phone and I managed to get a reservation. I still reeling that a 3 night stay totaled $1,318.71. This was for the room, NY sales tax and occupancy tax. Nothing more! The service was horrible, their front desk had young women who knew nothing, unfriendly staff who had no interest in customer service and on two occasions the front desk forgot to call us a taxi. I was told there would be shuttles to Syracuse University from their hotel for graduation, but they suddenly "changed their mind". You would think during a busy graduation weekend they would have more staff and bend over backwards to accommodate a sold out hotel. We had no shampoo/conditioner in our room, the blow dryer didn't work, the place is old and tired, the bathroom had cracks with no counter space, horrible water pressure and the room needed painting. The room was so small you could hardly turn around and every time we waited for an elevator it would take forever because the cleaning crew had it loaded with large wheeled baskets of dirty linens. On day 2, our room wasn't even serviced. When I complained, there were no apologies, just "we have a sold out hotel so we'll get to it tomorrow". Excuse me?? I was shocked at how downhill the place was from my daughter's freshman year stay to last week at graduation. A huge disappointment and stay away from this rip off flea bag. Syracuse is NOT Manhattan, Boston or San Francisco. We would have been happier at the Comfort Inn near the Syracuse airport for $65 per night had it been available. Be forewarned!!! read more

Very pleased with this hotel. Slightly old-fashioned feel. Good service. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. The highlight is the attached restaurant, which is excellent and worth visiting even if you are not staying at the hotel. I will probably not return to Syracuse in the near future, but if I do, I will definitely stay here again. read more

i think this is the best hotel in the Dtown area. its not too expensive but worth the price. the room was big and very clean! and its a 5 minute walk from dtown without the crazy dtown price. read more
