Wow...how have I lived here for 3 years and never ventured out to this gem? It's pretty much a make your own hibachi grill and I love it! Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. When you arrive you'll be taken to a table and given a little metal bowl - be sure to pack that sucker down as you go through the line! (I even saw some people using their hands to press the proteins down so they could pack in more!) So many choices of proteins, you can truly make one of the best feasts you've ever had - all on your own. If it's your first time and you don't know what to do - flavor/ingredient - wise, there are recipe cards on the wall before you start to make one of their combinations. This was my first time and I just played it by ear. Steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops and crab, seasoned with some garlic/lime and steakhouse seasonings. Both of the stir fry veggie mixes, add in a little zucchini, squash and baby corn along with the honey soy sauce and fried rice - it was AMAZING. When I heard that my dad really liked this place, I should have been more skeptical. This is a stand alone restaurant that looks much bigger than it is inside. There are long rows of smaller tables that are put together to make bigger tables. Walls divide the rows of tables. Along the windows, there are higher tables with stools. Upon walking in, they seat you and give you a silver bowl. Around the corner is the food preparation area. First, you choose your protein, then seasonings, followed by vegetables, and finally sauces. You take your bowl full of the things that you like and tell them what starch you'd like (rice, brown rice, spiral pasta or udon noodles) and they cook it for you and bring it to your table. It is a truly remarkable operation. HOWEVER, that area is way too crowded. Having never been there before, I wasn't sure what to get, so I'm stopping to look to see what is there. The woman behind me (who I will refrain from calling a dirty name right now) was literally pushing me with her shoulder to get me to move faster. So, of course, I slow down even further. Opening up a second line and taking out the bar area would make so much more sense. I'm used to places in California that have less space than this, but have a more open area where the food is. Oh, well. The food was brought to the table relatively quickly. As i turns out, I chose pretty well, though none of the sauces that I chose lived up to their listed spiciness. I think they would get even more money if they offer an opportunity up front to get a slightly bigger bowl, instead of an offer of a second bowl at a reduced price. I can see big guys like me getting the big bowl and then even still maybe asking for a second bowl. I liked my food, but didn't love it. I don't think the pork cooked nearly as long as it needed to cook. If I could have cooked the food myself, I think I would have enjoyed this place much more. Everyone else in my family were tickled pink about what they got. I think that the eating area is too closely packed for comfort. The food is really, really great and the wait staff is super friendly, informative, and attentive even when they are SLAMMED. At their busiest, they still move rather quickly. No problem getting a table for 4 on a Saturday night. My only complaint is they have the tiniest to-go boxes I've ever seen in my life. One thing Genghis always does well is the build-your-own-bowl system. Your choice of protein, vegetables, starch, sauces and toppings. I used to love this place! It was one of my absolute favorites. The staff was friendly and the food was always great. I have a Kahn's Klub card and I used to get goodies in my email. Now, things have changed a bit. Their rewards have changed, no more email specials, the bowls and ordering system have changed, food items and sauces have changed (I used to love the celery, they don't have it anymore). They used to have a great pomegranate tea, they used to have at least a couple of fantastic servers... all that is different now and we don't frequent as much as we used to but it's still a good meal and the edamame itself can be a great incentive. read more

The options for vegetables and fruits and nuts is great. They have plenty of sauces to flavor your food but be sure to grab their list at the start of the line for specific mixes. The only thing we wish it would be different was more training on the waiter/ staff. We ordered the pot stickerss, the waiter didn't even gave us any utensils to eat with it. It was our first time coming here, we got seated but there was no proper instructions on how make your own stir fried works. Good thing that we eat at Mongolian bbq/ make your own stir fried at different restaurants before so we kinda knew what it entails. The waiter took our drink orders and disappeared. We had to flagged him down to get our order and bowls for the grill. There were no condiments provided, when we didn't see our waiter coming back, so we had to flagged down another waiter and asked for soy sauce and sriracha. While the food is average, at best, the fact that the entire place is filthy and falling apart makes the whole dining experience like eating in a gang-infested ghetto. The walls are dirty, the air ducts on the ceiling actually look like they have mold or some other disgusting buildup, all of the furniture is beat to hell or torn, the booth upholstery is torn and had apparently never been cleaned, the men's bathroom is covered in graffiti actually carved into the walls and mirrors... Stopped in for dinner tonight and had a good meal. The restaurant was clean and well staffed. Cocktail menu is wine based and limited. Our drinks were good but too sweet for our taste. The waiter explained the process of how we pick out the food and how the cook prepares it. While going through the buffet line and picking out our items I noticed a wide variety of toppings, spices and sauces. Everyone can find something they like. We enjoyed our meal, the only issue was how long it from choosing our items to getting it to our table. Excellent Mongolian food, friendly staff, clean environs meant and a fun way to get your lunch or dinner. The interior looks good except for one or two seats that have tor upholstery, bit the rest of the place looks excellent. If you have not had Mongolian before then this is real treat. You do not order your meal from your table, instead you will walk along the counter and select which protein (meat) you want (you put it into your bowl) the you select the seasoning and put it on your meat, then you put whatever other toppings you want on the top of your bowl, there is a lot of choice and it is all fresh and decent quality. You then take your bowl and hand it to the cook, he will ask which carb you want with it (fried rice, noodles or tortilla) and if you want an egg to be cooked inside your meal. He will put your bowl on the Mongolian Grill and cool it for you. The grill is a huge somewhat flat disk that is hot and your meal goes on that girl where the cook will cook it by moving it back and forth with a stick. You can stand there and watch your meal being made or you can go back to your table and they will automatically bring it to you. The food is very tasty, you get to season it and assemble it exactly as you like it and its a lot of fun. If you are new then the staff will make a good effort to explain everything and help you out, so the experience is fun and easy. The downside is that unlike other Mongolian Grills (mostly in California) they do not have any charts posted to help you figure out the flavor profile that you want to achieve. I recommend that you take a note on your phone of which seasonings you used and then note how it tasted so you can then repeat or change it in your next visit. The fried rice is simply pitiful, its flavorless with an odd texture. Its not awful but then again its not up to the standard of everything else so it sticks out like a sore thumb. Fried Rice is supposed to have "wok hei" (essence of the wok) which means that the rice was properly cooked over very high heat so its completely cooked, has a nice toasty exterior with a toasty aroma and toasty flavor that complements the seasonings put into the rice. The rice here is no better than yo would get at as gas station convenience store and is sorely disappointing. The desserts are fabulous, we tried three different dessert items and all were so wonderful that we usually recommend that people the sampler plate and split it amongst two to four people. The Lemonade drinks are nice, you ca ask the to flavor it just for you which is really nice, they really do have a good taste of the fruit flavorings and are not too sweet. If they fix the rice (lets face it, friend rice is the basis of great Chinese cuisine) then I can raise my review to five stars. read more

I love the idea of being able to create and choose what you want! The very first time I came here I put a little bit of everything that looked good in my bowl and it was disgusting. The last time I visited Genghis grill I dident make that mistake again. I must've visited during a less busy time of the day, there was hardly a sole in the restaurant. The service was great but since there was barely any customers in the restaurant there were a few employees just standing around gossipping about what others had put in their bowl. The food at Genghis Grill is great! If you screw it up, it's your own fault and there's no one else to blame but yourself. If you have trouble (or are not Genghis Grill bowl mix-masters like the local pros), there are food cards on the wall that will guide you to preparing the perfect meal. I plated up the Bowl of Seoul and Teriyaki Chicken, and fully enjoyed them both. After devouring my second bowl, I found out (afterwards) that there is no harm with touching up your plate and adding a little more sauce to your food. I watched two guys in front of me pile the food onto their tiny bowls. It takes some skill to master the process of putting together your own bowl perfectly, but if you're not savvy with preparing a bowl, just grab a food card and go! Matthew (a bartender) had a great attitude and was extremely helpful. Tip: ask about their special drinks. The day I was there, the restaurant had a vodka/wine/pineapple mixed drink behind the bar that people may not know about unless you're sitting right at the bar and looking at the container. read more

Drove past this location while driving on I-25. My wife asked if I knew anything about it. I had gone to this type of establishment years ago and enjoyed it. After a long day of exploring Albuquerque we looked them up on the website and found out that we could place an order online and pick it up when we wanted. Ordering was easy and clear. When we arrived, we were treated like long lost friends. Claudia and Matt knew who we were because of the online order, asked a question about our order, invited us to sit at the bar and offered us water while waiting. We looked around and noticed that without exception everyone working had a smile on their face and looked like they enjoyed their job. We decided to eat in. It was taken care of immediately. The food was cooked exactly as we had ordered. My wife, who is from China, really can't stand all the sugar that appears in most American restaurant cooking regardless of cuisine. And I love very spicy dishes that most people would find too spicy. This time around we got exactly what we had asked for and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We just can't say enough about the professionalism, attention to detail and genuine warmth we were shown by Matt and Claudia and the rest of the Genghis Grill team. this place is pretty amazing....after moving from chicago to california it was hard to find a place like genghis grill anywhere near LA! Well after visiting friends/family in albuquerque (always have trouble with the spelling) we decided to try it since you can't miss it off the freeway ;) so let's talk about what I liked: 1) The sauces...they have soooo much flavor and the variety is exceptional. Mixing and matching the sauces is my favorite and so far i have made some great bowls! 2) the selection of food choices: you name it and they have it....and it is very fresh. It is always being filled up so you never have to worry about running out! 3) the tv's everywhere! there is nothing like watching your favorite sport and eating your heart out! 4) the service: exceptional...exceptional...exceptional...they come by the table just enough (not too little or too much).... This is the place to go if you want guaranteed good take home food‼ I've been here three times since moving to the ABQ and has gotten better every time. I think it's because I figure out how to stack the bowl better.... All I know is that this time I made a wall with the zucchini and carrots around the edge of the bowl and I was able to get way more veggies in. Woot!!! This was our last visit ever. We had the same complaint tonight that we always do. Servers just pay no attention & the food line isn't kept clean. Our server stood at the table next to ours & somehow managed NOT to see our 4 empty glasses sitting on the edge of the table. When she moved away & I said excuse me, she managed to not hear me. We each had water & another drink so with all 4 glasses empty it had been a while without a refill. I gave up timing how long the glasses were empty when it had been 10 minutes. Then my husband got veggie potstickers instead of the chicken ones he ordered. It took a long time for his replacement order to arrive & for our bowls to arrive. We waited almost 15 minutes for our check while our server was nowhere to be found. We asked for leftover containers & my husband had a large bowl that was still at least half full. She brought 1 small box. We ended up needing a second box, but she couldn't figure that out. We had to ask. I don't expect a lot at a place like this where you put your own bowl together, but I do expect a server to see empty glasses sitting there & to notice when people need their check. We usually tip 20 - 25% as a rule, but the server tonight got 10% & I felt like that was overly generous. We will never be back. In the 18 months since we've been here last we noticed the prices had gone up quite a bit also, but the service has never improved. Plus, it's visible from the freeway, so we figure, why not? We take a fairly small (first warning sign there) to the self-serve counter. There were little menu cards on "how to prepare" your dish; if you want beef and broccoli, select menu card #2, etc... We picked our normal fare of beef and pork (second warning sign: the sneeze guard does nothing against flies), along with our standard vegetables (bean sprouts, carrots, corn, etc). Normally, at least with Great Khan -- yes, the ones at the mall, Mongol's (Westwood, CA), and a few Mongolian places we usually frequent, they have someone doing the sauces, ginger, spiciness, etc. Nope, on your own here. So we followed the card information. Yeah, what we got was barely edible. The service wasn't bad, and it's a nice little gathering scene with a bar and people, but our meal was awful. Of course the build a bowl is a great concept and the ability to mix and match is great. I really feel it's unfair to critique the food as I more or less choose the ingredients but the preparation was executed perfectly. My food was hot and tasted just as I hoped. The food here was decent, but certainly not life changing. If you have been to other Mongolian BBQ places, you'll know that this is ok, but not the best out there. If you have never been, then it is certainly an exciting experience. I liked that they had a tofu option, but of course, the vegetarian meals don't cost any less than someone protein loading on shrimp and scallops. I appreciated them having a vegetarian card, meaning that the grill got cleaned before mine went down (yay!), but the order of the items made it tough to fill my bowl with other stuff once the tofu went in. Would much rather have loaded it with veggies, and then put the ungainly tofu on top. The sauce options were ok, and I appreciated getting to taste them, but they seemed high on salt and lower on flavor. Overall, a good place if you're really hungry, or it's late and you want to just fill, sit and eat, but I don't think this is really a destination place. read more

I can see why people would like this place, since each diner gets the chance to feel like he or she is in full control of the flavor and ingredients that go into a bowl of what is essentially stir fry. I bet people think, "This is so cool, I can throw exactly what I want in here and make it taste just how I like." My big question is; can't you do that at home too? And probably for a bit less money? I'm absolutely sure that I can do what GG does because I walked through the assembly line, tossed a bunch of raw items with spices and then watched as someone cooked it up. I thought to myself, "I just figured out their recipe." To GG's credit, they give out their recipes to guide you through the assembly line so they obviously aren't trying to keep anything secret, but the point is that this place really just highlights how simple preparing food can be. Most of us are just lazy!!! So yeah, one big knock is that it's like a slap in the face watching how painless the whole prep process is and feeling like your wasting your money. The second knock almost contradicts the first, but hopefully highlights again why this place doesn't quite make sense to me: choosing my own ingredients and throwing them together in a great dish is not soemthing I do easily and IT'S DEFINITELY NOT WHAT I WANT TO DO WHEN I EAT OUT. I'm the opposite of that personal that likes control over how my dish comes out. I like to defer TO THE EXPERTS---chefs, cooks, people that do this day in and day out and do it well. That's why besides asking for "medium" or "christmas," I rarely ask for modifications or extras or anything else with my food. I like enchiladas the way most of New Mexico prepares them and that's what I expect I'll get when in a restaurant. Having said all that, my bowl was good but unimpressive. I know, it was my fault since I picked the ingredients, but to me that's just GG devising a brilliant restaurant strategy in which diners are at fault for bad meals rather than them. I like to hold others accountable and not myself, so this is not the place for me. I think, all in all, this place is for those that enjoyed the same sort of dining experience while in college, in which one took their sorry idea of what a meal should taste like up to some underqualified student who would heat it all together in a sloppy mess. So, you are given this little silver bowl, looks like a pets food bowl, and you stand in line to pick what kind of meats, veges, sauces, spices, that you want in this delicious stir fry--that the chefs prepare for you. Maybe mine was just so amazing because of what I put into it. The meats include choices like, white fish, shrimp, scallops, beef, pork, sausage, pepporoni, meatballs, evvverything lol It is so good. You get to choose, noodles, rice, fried rice, pasta, mixed, veges galore, and oh so irresistible sauces. I mean, just try it once, it was worth it ;) Pluuuus, they have alcohol. mmmm read more

Great food experience, love the fact you can put together your own bowl. But the low rating based on service. Last 2 times had to wait in line ro give the cooks my bowl due to not enough cooks for the amount of customers. Cooks taking their sweet time when they see a line and deciding to take up a quarter of their grill to cook more fried rice during dinner rush. The seating hostesses also don't know their job very well. I would suggest getting a Khan's Card if you eat here a lot. read more

If you've never been here, the flow of things is a little weird. They give you a selection of bowls, you pick one, then fill it full of raw food to be cooked. They're even aware of food allergies and will clean the grill on request. It's pretty great. Every time I've gone my water has never been empty, food was cooked to perfection, and the service was friendly and prompt. They give you lots and lots of ingredients and an empty bowl. I love creating different combinations of flavors and being surprised each and every time. I do miss a few things that disappeared like shrimp and celery but still have enough to choose from. The staff is always friendly and attentive.
