A favorite sushi spot when I'm in abq. I love the atmosphere - it feels like I'm on a tropical getaway more than I'm in the middle of a residential area in the heights. The service is consistently good, the sushi is always a nice presentation, the restrooms are clean, and the food quality is consistent. I drove by recently and it looks like they're undergoing a name change and remodel, but same ownership. I hope the new business is as good as Pacific Paradise. read more

Nice place with lots of options overall, vibe of the play seemed kind of old and outdated. It was a cold day when we visited so we quickly ordered something to warm us up. My husband got the miso soup and I wanted to try the egg drop chicken and corn soup. I enjoyed the egg, drop chicken corn soup it was like campbell's chicken noodle soup with some corn. My husband said his miso soup was ok. For main dishes my husband had sushi and I had the classic spicy pad thai. My pad thai was good and very reasonably priced I could not finish it and took home half. The sushi on the other hand was a bit expensive smaller portion and took a while for them to prepare it. My husband said it was mediocre and has had better sushi at other places in town and probably won't get sushi here next time. I've driven by this place so many times and finally made a point to stop in. I was so glad I did. I ordered far too much food because I just had to try things. I tried some sushi rolls and some pad thai which is my normal go to dish for trying new places. Both of these were delicious. The pad thai was a huge serving that (sushi notwithstanding) ended up being about three servings for me. It took us a while with the menu because we hadn't been to the place before and the selection was pretty extensive. The staff was great about it though and our food came out really quickly. Our server also checked on us periodically and was very friendly. The decor is awesome, it felt a bit more Hawaiian than I expected it to be - ok the name does kind of give that away. It's also a much bigger space than it looks like from the outside with a second room. I will be back to try more things and definitely go back to sample more sushi! read more

I was really excited to try Pacific Paradise's $20 Sushi Buffet. It was only available for 12/20 & 12/21. As soon as it opened at 11:30am, there was a line forming. I joined the line and was fortunate to get a booth table. I was still waiting for my family, so I wasn't in a rush. I was offered drinks while the servers were trying to catch up. I was surprised that most didn't know what was going on. I was under the impression that they were not prepared. I waited awhile to get a menu and put in an order. The servers were all patient and kind, so I tried to be patient. When I did order, the miso came out not too long after, but was served lukewarm. I was shocked how small the bowls were, and it tasted like the bottom of the barrel bc it was grainy. The tofu was so tiny and the the seaweed were ground bits? I've never experienced such skimpy miso soup. Then, the food arrived by 12:40pm. I ordered mostly nigiri and 1 roll. I was only allowed to order so much for 2 ppl. But I was surprised how big the pieces were. Everything looked appetizing, but some of the pieces tasted fishy. I wasn't impressed with the quality of the rice either. I know this is a small business, and hate to be critical, but I have to be honest. Despite the advertisement of this $20 buffet, they were not prepared. I wished they had better quality to make the long wait worth it. I didn't order more even though I wanted to bc I knew it would be a long wait, and bc I was turned off by the last piece of the flying roe nigiri. It had a weird aftertaste. I had been a frequent diner at Pacific Paradise for 20+ years. The last time we went was awful. Tempura veggie app- cold and greasy. Ordered a variety of sushi rolls. Quality of ingredients was poor. The chicken teriyaki roll in particular tasted rancid. Service- awful. It started when we were given small plates with the appetizers, which we used. They were the only plates we had. Server came to table and scolded us for using the "sushi" plates. She was rude. When I asked if we could just have another set, she huffed off. It was a table of 4 so I'd think they would have enough plates. We all ordered Miso soup, which she forgot and brought after the sushi was served. It was luke warm tasted bad. When we mentioned that the food seemed to have changed she snapped again. The bill came and had a 3% surcharge. I went to the guy who seemed to be the manager and he said it was a credit card charge. I told him we were paying cash so he adjusted the bill. That was nice but, he was sincere, but with poor service and quality of ingredients we won't be back. Learned the original owner retired - new owners. I emailed them the same info- no Response. So I'm posting- it's a real shame this was a great neighborhood place. If you've ever been to an Island's restaurant, in California, it is that kind of fake polynesian kitsch. It was a little dark inside. Raised booths, on the right hand side. Larger tables in the center. My sister and I had a two-top by the bathroom and "gift shop." The menu was larger than I had anticipated. There were dishes from several Asian countries. There is also a sush menu. We ordered a sushi roll that had green chile tempura inside. Sadly, the green chile didn't have much heat nor flavor. There was way too much spicy mayo sauce for my liking. I tried to scrape off as much as I could. My sister ordered fried tofu, for her dinner. I asked for the mapo tofu, after confirming that it had ground pork in it. I really enjoyed my sister's fried tofu. The coating was crispy, but not greasy. The portion size was huge. The mapo tofu had a wonderful flavor, spicy but not too spicy. It was a big portion size, so I took about half of it home. My sister liked mine, as well. Service was good. The gift shop was a small display case with a few "friendship" bracelets and door hangers. My husband found this place while we were searching for dinner options a month ago. I've lived in ABQ for a while from the Bay Area and had no idea this place existed. As an Asian American, the food tastes absolutely amazing. It feels like home cooking. Nothing we've eaten yet has tasted wrong. There is so much to pick from off the menu. I wish we had known about this place sooner. The staff and the owner are all very friendly. One of the few restaurants in ABQ that care about customer service and feedback. The egg drop soup is awful. It's "sweet"; why would eggs be sweet?!? That makes no sense. It's supposed to be a savory dish. I also don't like that all sushi ordered by each guest is served on the same plate. It can be confusing to guests if they don't want to share. Unless a large sushi boat is ordered, the orders should be separated on different plates per each guests individual order. Plenty of sushi restaurants can manage to do that. The sushi we ate was good, the server was nice, and the atmosphere was cute, so giving 3 stars for that reason. But I don't have any desire to return. The tiki vibe made me wish there were tiki drinks, but the restaurant only has saki. Update: They've definitely changed since they got new owners. A few things we noticed as long time customers: It's been SLOW the last few times we've gone. Like: "we give up, we'll take it to go" slow. The menu was redone. It has mostly the same names for foods, but those foods are not the same. One example was our old favorite #10 the spicy and aromatic chicken. It's still on the menu, but isn't prepared remotely the same. Orders are SMALLER. The #10 chicken had probably 1/2 the amount of chicken it used to have. I hope it's just growing pains. read more

We tried Pacific Paradise on a weekday evening. We were sat quickly and were greeted by our server, who was friendly. There's both booth and table seating, all of which is indoors. There are menus for non-sushi items, then a 8.5x11" paper menu for sushi which the diner can mark with a pencil. We each got a small cup of soup: the miso and a chicken and corn egg-drop. Both were bland and uninteresting; we've had better elsewhere. I'd give them a 2/5. The Japanese steamed dumplings were good; we both decided we'd get them again if we returned. I'd give them a 4/5. I wanted the coconut fried rice, but the coconut is the pre-shredded, dried, and bagged kind instead of fresh and seared, so I opted for the pineapple fried rice instead. It had a good savory-sweet flavor to it, and both the tofu (you can order whichever protein you want) and pineapple were finely chopped, which I enjoyed. I haven't run across that in a Thai fried rice before, and I've had a lot of those dishes. I added raisins to the entree because otherwise the contents would have been pretty paltry with just eggs and the protein. I would have liked to have seen green onions, onions, cashews - anything - added to the mix. The flavor and serving size was a 4/5. My dining companion got the crispy Hawaiian chicken and said he would not get it again. We both agreed it was bland. He gave it a 2/5. Our server said anything on the menu can be made bespoke, and adding raisins to my dish was no issue. Some restaurants take umbrage at modified orders, but Pacific Paradise is fine with it. Overall I'd give the restaurant a 3/5. The soup was bland, but my entree was flavorful, if lacking multiple ingredients. I'd give Pacific Paradise another try, but it wouldn't be my first choice. read more

We have been coming in for years but the menu is small the portions are small and sadly the service has changed for the worse. I absolutely love this place. When you walk in, it feels like being in Hawaii. It is a very friendly and inviting space with lots of big booths and large tables. Every time I'm here the staff and servers are very friendly and accommodating. Everything I have ordered off of the menu has been delicious. Time for another restaurant review. This time with my Kung Fu family, which also happened to be my first bite of sushi in years! Pacific Paradise was totally paradise ;-). We got a salmon roll, avocado roll, paradise roll and mango roll... and of course tasted everyone else's. The waitress was patient, as she had to deal with multiple tickets. I reluctantly decided to post a review. This used to be my family's favorite restaurant, as it reminded us of home. We used to love the food, the atmosphere, and the service. Not that we come here super often, but often enough. Well, we decided to dine in for lunch the week of Thanksgiving. They changed their menu and recipes... which I understand that some restaurants, at times, must consider doing. They no longer use fresh fruit, instead use canned fruit, and some of the dishes don't taste as good as they used to. They no longer offer soup/salad once you are seated. The changes and not for the better were disheartening. The balance of flavors were off. We ordered Honey Sesame Shrimp which is now an appetizer, and the shrimp was not perfectly crisp and large and tasty as the entree they once had. Gyoza and sushi seemed the same as before. The ginger over powered the Ramen we ordered. The Sticky Rice, my son's favorite dessert, no longer used fresh mango, and they put crunchy coconut flakes in the rice, which was not a good change (in my opinion). When the waitress brought some of the food out, I was surprised and said, "You don't use fresh fruit anymore?" Keep in mind, I don't penalize waiters for food/menu they are not responsible for, but she immediately got defensive and was very short with me. I later mentioned that the food wasn't as good as it used to be. She had walked away and said over her shoulder "sorry." She continued to be short with me, walking away in the middle of me speaking to her, I even asked if I said something that is causing her to be short with me, she said all I've done was complain. She had walked away and said over her shoulder "sorry." I later asked to speak with the manager, who wasn't there, and when I asked when he will be in so I could speak with him, the response was "I don't know," or "maybe he'll be in." At a certain point, she did disclose that a number of customers have complained about the food and she said something about the cost of food or cutting back (something like that) so they changed things. (Sorry, but that's where you don't forfeit quality and definitely not service.) When it was time to pay, she took my card, ran it, I asked for a pen so I could sign, and then walked away, I said, "don't you want me to pay?" She kept walking away and said no that's ok. (I was still charged btw, which I was glad to pay, but never signed.) I waited for awhile, and then we left. I asked again when the manager would be in, and got the same response. I didn't call to speak to the manager, it wasn't worth it for me, but it's disheartening to know their quality of food and service (from this waitress) has changed for the worse. We've always had wonderful service here, people who actually enjoyed serving here. I have never experienced this type of service before. Just wanted to share my experience. read more

Came here for a casual date night with my honey. 5 things. 1. It's Clean, don't think I stepped foot into a cleaner sushi bar in a while!! And the seating is at torso length at the booths--which I love (I wasn't sinking in my chair) 2. ENVIRONMENT was too adorable. Felt as if I was NOT in Albuquerque. Lol And in a tropical setting! We got so much food for the prices on the happy hour menu, it was great! The food was delicious! The only reason why I give this place a 4 star review is because the server was just not understanding anything. This is one of my all time favorite restaurants! I've been coming here for years and they are ALWAYS on point! The service is always friendly & attentive. We never have to ask for refills, no matter how busy they are they always pay attention. The food is consistent and consistently delicious! I always get the lady in red roll and depending on my mood I will often get the Tropical Mango Roll, sometime I switch it up like today and got the spicy salmon roll. The spicy salmon roll was good but, not what I was wanting. My husband loves the Green beans & ground beef, he's not a sushi person. I love the pineapple Boat! It has the perfect blend of sweet from the pineapple, spicy from the bell peppers and sauce is perfection! I also got the steamed vegetables and I love that they have a slight seasoning, not just plain steamed vegetables. Everything here is complete perfection. I love the environment too. There's a reason cooks put sauces on chicken white meat dishes (lookin' at you Kung Pao, General Tso's, and Sweet & Sour). Steamed broccoli was okay on flavor, but was too stiff to call it al dente. The labor needed on the fork & knife dance indicated that it could have stood a bit more time in the steamer. Noodles were definitely substantial. Sauce was salty goodness & a needed bright note for the entree. The attending bit of shredded carrots & greenery was decorative enough to hold down its corner of the to-go container. Salad was typical greens mix dressed with a light & bright ginger dressing of good flavor. Salad was fresh enough to be crisp. Ambience was strong Island Vibe decor, complete with mini sailboat I assume was a funspace for little (and maybe not so little) kids. Waiter/cashier was friendly enough, if not particularly engaging. We got sat quick and our server was very pleasant and kind. I am not one to give bad reviews ever, but what me and my partner endured after eating here was awful. We had an extreme case of food poisoning after. I'm not sure what the cause was (improper storage, cleaning, cross contamination, etc.) since we eat sushi pretty regularly from reputable restaurants and have never had a problem before. The rice itself is a huge portion, plenty for an appetizer for 4 people or 2 meals for 1 person. The rice is just a little sweet from the pineapple and delicious. I also enjoy their sushi I usually get the tropical mango roll, Crab, avocado, mango inside, topped with salmon and chef's special sauce, or the crunchy shrimp tempura roll, avocado, cucumber shrimp tempura, and crunchy flakes. Their sushi is tasty with fresh ingredients and good portion sizes. Of course, who could forget the waikiki wontons? I personally love wontons and will get them everywhere I go. Their wontons are, crispy wonton stuffed with imitation crab meat cream cheese, and scallions. They have lots of flavor on their own but they also come with a tasty dipping sauce. I have always had a good time, great staff, and good food the many times I have been here. Today was horrible. My family member ordered fried rice and they brought him white. It took them over 40 minutes to get the fried rice to him, long after he had finished eating. The waitress did not turn one ladies order in and brought her meal to her when everyone was over half way finished. They charged her for her meal but I feel they should have given her the meal. My family member was charged full price when they should have discounted their meal. My chicken was dry and the crust was hard. They took my charge card and brought my card and ticket back to me with the paperwork. I had to leave as it was hot in there. They told the people i was with that I had not paid so they paid them and gave them a tip that was way too much. The scallop dish I ordered did come with the pasta separate which was nice. The mushrooms and scallops were super dry and had barely any flavor, just heat. Then mixed w the noodles was utterly bland. The scallops were the very tiny frozen ones, and a couple I couldn't even chew they were so touch. I really could eat the rest of my dish after that. They can do pretty much anything gluten free and make it taste amazing! The food is divine and the presentation is gorgeous. We love the Golden Chicken and the Volcano Beef. Be aware that the stars of heat are serious! Ask for fewer stars if you need them. Anything above a two is deadly! All of their soups are good but the chicken and corn egg drop soup is crave worthy! The salad dressing is made from fresh tropical fruit juices and it is heavenly! They need to sell it in a bottle. I've done sushi a few times here and I love their tropical rolls. My family used to frequent this place for years. I moved out of town and hadn't been in for a few years. WOW how times have changed. Went for dinner with my family. Services started out okay. Not overly impressive but fine. Ordered fried tofu plate. The server (Rachel was her name) brought me an eggplant plate. Told her I didn't order eggplant (I actually can't eat eggplant). Server told me I did order egg plant. Told her again I didn't order eggplant I ordered tofu. She continued to aggressively argue with me stating she knows I said eggplant because she had told me, "good choice" when I ordered and she loves eggplant and hates tofu. Others at my table told her they heard me order tofu as well. She continued to aggressively argue with all of us and then said we were "difficult from the beginning" and was actually physically getting in my personal space. The servers behavior was the most unprofessional I have ever encountered and was completely out of line. Management did minimal. Was nice and polite. Took my meal off the ticket. Which I told them I would not be eating and did not eat. Paid for everything else. Not about money, just facts. For reference, first time ever that I tipped zero in my adult life. I learned the bigger the number behind the Sake is the sweeter it is. Great menu and loved the atmosphere and lots of Christmas lights. Just had my meal. The mango chicken was exceptional and they didn't coat it is sauce but was enough for the veges and noodles. The veges where cooked perfectly I ate them first.
