If it was fabulous food and service I wouldn't mind standing in line for 20 or 30 minutes to have them stir fry my food. If you are looking for an economical, healthy alternative to fast chinese food, you have a good option in the Genghis Grill. I have only been to a couple of other Mongolian BBQs so I don't have much to compare it to but my food came back to me fairly quickly, searing hot, and delicious. I couldn't ask for more. After a long drive back from down south, I was looking for something warm and with lots of veggies to put into my belly. This place really hit the spot. I really loaded up the bowl and opted for brown rice. I did not need to have another portion so I got out of there at about $11/pp. I was pretty happy with the results and would go back. I wish they had lamb as an option for meat. They took shrimp off the menu because it has gotten too expensive. I like that they don't put the sauces on until the very end of the cooking process because it would burn with the food. read more

Not pleased with the changes. It's been a couple of years since I ate at Genghis Grill, so the wife and I decided it was time. They changed their menu and took away the all you can eat option. The selections were not as good as I remember. Additionally, they overcooked my dish so my shrimp was rubbery. There are at least a half dozen Mongolian BBQs in ABQ offering all you can eat at a better price and they know how to properly grill it. I enjoyed my visit to Genghis Grill very much. I have never been anywhere like this before. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They instructed me on the different sizes, options and how the whole process worked. There were many different protein and veggie options to chose from. Once you're done with creating your bowl it takes only minutes for the food to be grilled. The food was wonderful, and sense you make your own bowl there are endless opportunities for great flavors. I really like the "build your own bowl" concept at Genghis Grill. The variety of choices is good and different combinations make each experience unique. I like spicy food so I can load up on hot peppers and sauce (for reduced calories, use Garlic Water instead). Also, the size of the bowl is generous and I always have left overs for dinner or a late night snack. I do miss the Lettuce Wraps and could use another appetizer on the menu. The atmosphere is very casual and friendly. To avoid the crowd, get there before noon on weekdays and sit at the bar. Melanie has been there since they opened and offers great service. One thing that distinguished GG from other restaurants is Khan's Rewards. A great reward program that offer's free bowl's for every 10 purchased and on birthdays. My husband loves this place. I like the food but the services stinks every time, every location. The problem with this location is that there is a wall where all of the servers stand almost in a line, chit chatting while your food sits on the bar waiting to be taken to your table. The servers can't see it because it is behind the wall and they are deep in conversation. I've had to actually stand up and point to the bowls lining up on the bar before anyone noticed. Ok, first off the food was good but that is largely a function of what I selected and how I seasoned it. After all this is really a make your own meal kind of place, all they do is grill what you choose. I am a long time fan of a place called Big Wok in Manhattan Beach California. For those of you that know the area, Manhattan Beach is one of the most expensive real estate areas in the country, therefore I am sure the costs to run the restaurant there are significantly higher than Genghis Grill in New Mexico. I am mentioning this because I felt cheated after eating at Genghis Grill. We have all experienced how some businesses make you feel like you received a good value for your money and other businesses where you feel like you are being taken advantage of in obvious ways. Genghis is the latter. At Big Wok and many other authentic non chain non gimmick places you receive a large bowl to fill up at the bar. You have plenty of room in that large bowl. You do not feel controlled. Big Wok allows you to go to the bar as many times as you like with no additional cost. They serve you bread at your table as well. The price is only about $10 per person. At Genghis (chain) grill you are presented with 4 options. You can choose a pre made meal off of the menu or you can choose from 3 sized bowls to serve yourself at the bar. The smallest bowl is really tiny and insulting for $8.99. The next bowl is not much larger and the largest bowl (the one I chose) was the size of a small dog food bowl. As I recall I paid something like $15.99 for it. I was shocked to also find out that I could only go to the bar one time, That is it, just once!. No bread is served at the table either. I felt as though I was being rationed. To me it was really insulting. The food was good but I felt cheated for the amount I had to pay. We were a party of 4 and 2 of us chose the small bowls. The bill with tip was almost $70. I thought that was a lot of dough for this type of dining compared to other places I have been. I think the owners are greedy and I felt as if they insulted my intelligence. There are better values for your money but seeing as most Americans are financially inept and on some sort of government handout they probably will enjoy the experience. I would rather go to Panda Express than go to Genghis and spend this kind of money again. read more

I'm a bit disappointed at the new system here. You used to get one decent sized bowl for you to cram as much stuff in as one could possibly do. Now they have 3 different sized bowls all with it's own cost. The largest is $14! Holy crap! My lunch was $18 with a tip! That's a little steep for me. The large bowl seems smaller than the original one. The food line is messy (as usual) because people get carried away when filling the bowls and the staff doesn't seem to keep it orderly. There will be other food items in other bins and everything gets all mixed up. They need to do a better job of keeping everything separate. The meat section is a bit scary. It doesn't look appetizing, especially the pork and chicken. It just doesn't look like it's being kept at correct temperatures. The seating is not ideal. You end up sitting too close to other patrons and can hear every word of their conversations thus them hearing every word of yours. All in all, my meal was still pretty tasty considering the inflated cost and poorly managed food bins so I'll give them 3 stars. AVOID!! Went there once and was actually TURNED AWAY -- they only had ONE waitress for the entire establishment! No manager in sight. Incompetent, rude, and unprofessional. I'm a big Mongolian BBQ fan so I have been anxious for GG to open. I love picking all the meats and vegetables that I want and making it as spicy or interesting as I can. I grew up in Michigan and there was a small chain there named BD's that was an upscale Mongolian that set the bar for the rest of my experiences. They definitely appear to be influenced by BD's. It would be great if this chain takes hold because it is a great place that let's you be as healthy (or not) as you would like. Having this option in more cities would be great. On with the review... the first thing I can say is that avoid "high times" until things smooth out a bit. I don't know how much experience they have borrowed from other Mongolians but a place like this is very sensitive to the flow of customers through the line. Considering that both customers and the staff are figuring things out it is hard to move quickly through the place however that should get a lot better with experience. If you haven't experienced a Mongolian BBQ the basic concept is buffet like. You are given a bowl to put meats, vegetables, spices and sauces in, which you give to the grillers on the wok. They dump your bowl onto the wok and stir fry the meat and vegetables transferring to a clean plate for you. Those are the basics... some varieties I've seen: 1.) Sauces - some places have you place your sauces in a separate little bowl to be added later in the cooking process. They say adding it later keeps more flavor since it doesn't cook off. I prefer my meat marinating in all the sauces even if only for a short time. (GG has you use this bowl method) 2.) Utensils on the grill: Spatulas, Big Sticks and my favorite: long BBQ knives which are very sword like (so maybe these would be the most "traditional" considering that there weren't too many Bed, Bad and Beyonds in Mongolia at that time) (GG uses the large sticks) 3.) Cooking of your food: Some Mongolians the grill staff actually walk around the grill pushing your food along while others place your food in a single spot on the grill, keeping it separate from others and cooking it. Both have risks if you have food allergies since either the wok itself or the cooking utensils have the potential to cross contaminate. In addition, if you don't like spicy food the "walking method" really allows your food to potentially be spiced up if you are following someone like me who tends to go nuclear. (GG uses the food in a single location and asks about allergies) 4.) Food delivery - Most Mongolians have you stand around the wok as your food is being prepared. GG is the first I have seen where you are given a number and a runner will deliver your food when you are ready. This is good if you are tired and don't want to stand however I kind of like watching and seeing the grill action. GG is not set up for the majority of people to watch their food being prepared. 5.) Starches - All of them serve rice and noodles. Some of the nicer ones offer tortillas (BD's in MI have homemade which are great). GG also offers fried rice, brown rice and udon noodles along with tortillas making it the most complete offering I have experienced. One thing that is interesting here is that when you give your food to the grill you select your starch. If you choose rice or noodles then your food is delivered in a clean bowl over top of your selection. They pick the amount of rice you get but they seem to give you a good amount without too much. 6.) All you can eat versus one trip - Most places offer a one trip option at lunch time but tend to have a fixed price all you can eat for dinner. GG offers the one trip at dinner. In the end this is pretty nice. Both my wife and I have noticed that when you are trying to eat healthy one trip is a great amount. My last time there I made a really big bowl and found it was too much. Don't be concerned when you go for your first time and the bowl seems small. 7.) Meat selection - Some places you request meat and it is delivered (raw or frozen) for you to put your vegetables and spices. Other places let you choose how much and what types of meat. GG has the meat on the buffet so you pick how much and what type... I prefer this. I like the thought of being at the top of the food chain and how many different animals might be in my little bowl. GG has many kinds of seafood, so it has more meat choices than I'm used to. Genghis Grill definitely is a good Mongolian BBQ. I'm still more of a fan of BD's back in Michigan but this satisfies my cravings very well. I recommend them although I would avoid the rushes if possible. read more

My boyfriend and I used to LOVE Genghis Grill. We don't get to go there that often because it's really far away from where we live, but last week we decided to make the trek over there. When we got there, though, I was sorely disappointed. Genghis Grill used to have one size bowl at a very reasonable price. When we got there, however, we were asked what size we wanted, and the prices for each seemed far less reasonable than they used to be. So this startled us. We ate it, though, and it was good, but the change in the system kind of put a damper on it. But THEN we got home, and we both got very sick. You make it yourself, so if you don't like it, it's your own fault. They have a great selection of fresh proteins to choose from - I like the marinated steak and the shrimp. Add what you like from the vast selection of vegetables and you're all set. Service is usually pretty quick. They have a really great loyalty program (Khan's Rewards or something like that) where you get a free bowl pretty often if you're a regular. I hit up BD's in Ann Arbor while visiting Michigan, and ever since then I've been dying for a Mongolian BBQ joint to open in Albuquerque (I know I know there was one on Menaul but never got around to trying it). 1. Genghis Grill is obviously based on BDs. 2. Yes, you do have to create your own dish. But it is completely up to your own taste. You like onions? Put a ton of onions. Spicy? Non-spicy? Seafood? Beef? All of it? Completely up to you... And don't be shy, no matter what you manage to come up with, the cooks have seen crazier. 3. It is in the feedlot, and it is a chain, meaning peak hours are an excruciating wait. 4. The bowl looks small when you get it, but don't worry, they add pasta/rice/udon/starch (your choice) to the end dish for you. And remember... LESS IS MORE. 5. Don't put your sauce in the bowl, unless you want it burnt and caramelized onto your stir-fry. 6. It IS possible to over do it on shrimp. Believe me. read more

Went tonight to celebrate Valentine's Day with my fiancé because he works tomorrow and ended up having a really bad experience. We've been here a few times before and never were we told that we need to tell them we vegetarians. Found meat in our food and told the manager and he proceeded to tell us it was OUR fault although we were never informed that it is likely that other people's food will get in ours. I go to this place a few times a year and always love it! I never leave disappointed. I think my favorite thing about Genghis is that you put your own bowl together. No complainin' about the ingredients in your Mongolian BBQ here...because you are in control of what goes in! You can make it as healthy or unhealthy as you want. You can make it as spicy or as mild as you want. I love all of the fresh meats and the veggie and fruit selection. The basic concept is: pick your protein (choose between chicken, special types of beef, pork, and lots of seafood...my personal fave), pick your seasoning (try the dragon!), pick your veggies and fruits (all different types including corn, cabbage, watercress, bean sprouts, tomatoes, pineapple, etc.), then pick your sauce ( the dragon and the chili sauce are where its at), and finally..pick your starch (udon noodles and brown rice are among my faves). Mix and match and have fun with it!! Genghis can get pretty busy on the weekends and during the lunch and dinner hours..so I'd suggest you go during an "off" time if you want your food quick. They also have a cool selection of beers and wine drinks. You can even get your daquiri in a cool genghis glass that you can take home. They are very useful at home and the ink doesn't rub off like those cheap glasses you can get elsewhere. read more

My roommate and I eat here quite often, I think its cool because you make your own creations. I always get my Bowl with udon noodles. Its basically a build your own Asian bowl place. You get a small silver bowl and jam that bowl with raw meats, veggies, spices and there awesome sauces.Then you give the bowl to the cook and they add a starch, Rice, Udon noddles, fried rice etc... They serve Sangria there which you can't go wrong. The service has always been outstanding. I feel full when I leave here and not guilty because I feel its a pretty healthy meal. read more

Each time my food has come out far overcooked and as a result loses much of its quality. The service has also been prime Albuquerque service, rushed and insincere- even borderline rude. Tried to redeem a coupon for a free desert or appetizer with some friends who had the same coupon and the waitress said we could all use our coupons since we had separate checks. At the end after we had all eaten she told us it wouldn't work and her managers checked and apparently they couldn't get it to work either. I liked the fact that the food did not have MSG in it, which is a big thing for me since I'm allergic. The portion sizes were good. I liked the fact that you could choose how big and how much went into what you were going to eat. There was a lot of selection to choose from. The only real problem I had was the fact that the servers weren't good. They would come around every once in a while but most of the time I saw them hanging out and chatting with their friends of coworkers. I would go back for the food but not for the service. read more

I think this is a chain, but I still like it. It's something different. There is usually quite a line to build your dish, but so worth it. The stations are kind of a mess, but is to be expected. I know I make a mess trying to fit everything into my little silver bowl! And mine always comes out great! They only have a beer & wine license, but the Sangria is good.
