This use to be our go to sushi restaurant in castro valley. The fish is always very fresh and service is great but recently the quality is really inconsistent. The fish is still fresh but they might forget parts of the rolls and the noodle dishes are just not what they use to be. We ordered pad thai once and it was super bland like watered down ketchup and noodles. Hopefully after this whole covid thing is over, quality will go back to what it was. read more

Usually I'm hesitant on Asian fusion restaurants. You never know what you're really going to get. Also its one of those things like, if you're taking on such a big risk of serving multiple Asian cuisines let's hope you do it right! Decor: I instantly fell in love with the lobby. right when you walk in there are samurais and a huge wine cabinet. I'm big on wine so that whole setup was appealing to me. Mongol's beef which was your basic Mongol's beef, I wasn't too big of a fan but at least the vegetables were nice and fresh they added bell peppers which was good. We went there because a friend of my raved about their sushi rolls. I looked at the decor and the pictures of the food on Yelp and thought I 'd give it a try. Went with my family on a Saturday evening. The place was half full. We didn't need a reservation. We were sat down right away. The waitresses were friendly. Unfortunately, the food was below average in my opinion. I had sashimi (fatty tuna, yellowtail, and Salomon) and a California roll with real crab meat. Non of the sashimi was fresh. It was not spoiled or anything but the texture was soft and not firm like fresh sashimi. Basically no flavor even the fatty tuna (toro) which was supposed to be the most flavorful and rich of the 3 kinds of fish I ordered. The California roll was very disappointing too. I've never had such bad California rolls in my like and I am not exaggerating. I can't taste the flavor of the seaweed or the sesame. The worse part is the crab meat in the roll. It was basically dried small shredded crab meat put in the middle of the roll. No sauce or anything. I can feel the coarse and dry pieces of crab meat in every bite If you called those crab meat. I can't believe the substandard of the food. I would not even want to comment on the other food my family ordered. I didn't taste their food so I can't comment on it but they all didn't like their food, except the hamachi collar. The tables are very close to each other so it was crowded and cramped. This was my second trip here because I decided to give them another shot but I was still disappointed. The food is completely bland. The sushi is kinda overpriced and just average. The only food item that I enjoyed during this meal was the Salt and Pepper tofu. I had to drown everything else in chilli paste to get some flavor. My cousin and I ordered drinks that were horrible. I am normally not a picky person when it comes to cocktails, however these were way to strong to enjoy with your meal. My cousin asked for her drink to be remade, and it came back just as bad. Genghix is usually a weekly visit for us. The owner, Chin is very nice along with the rest of the staff. My favorite drinks are the Red Lotus and Matchatini and everything I've tried is good. Since I'm been eating there for awhile, I normally order the same dishes so I can't speak for everything on the menu these days. The Japanese lunch combos are a go-to and like most restaurants, more affordable than dinner. I do call in orders as well and they've always been correct! read more

For years I've driven by this place and this Sunday, thanks to a little purchase from Groupon, I finally got to eat here. With me were the usual suspects, da hubby, my daughter and my very picky son. We were greeted and seated immediately. At Genghix I believe it is merging of Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese Food, which works perfectly when you have a daughter that loves sushi and a son that is super picky. We ordered a miso soup and chicken fried rice for the boy, which was typical to what you would find in any chinese restaurant. We also ordered the Pokemon Salad. I was really glad that the hubby ordered this. It was similar to a Hawaiian Poke with avocado, mango and tuna in a spicy yet sweet dressing. Delish! The Zen Roll was my second favorite. Fried Eel, Avocado, Cream Cheese,Tobiko, Crab Meat, Seaweed Seasoning. It was truly delicious and quite large! We also ordered the Oakland A's Roll. Soft Shell Crab, Avocado, Crab, and Eel. It was quite similar to the Spider Roll we order from our favorite sushi spot. My least favorite was the Home Sweet Home. Fried Salmon, Cream Cheese, Avocado, Shiso, Salmon, Ume Paste. I love this place, I have had sushi, chinese food and thai there and always really enjoyed it. That was my old review. They recently updated the restaurant and added a new room. The sound acoustics in teh new room are very loud and the main dining area was rented out to a party. They got rid of their nice comfortable booths and put in really bad chairs and tables. A few weeks ago we tried after stopped going there for about 10 years，we found they had changed the owner. The food improved impressively. Therefore, we went back again last night. To our disappointment, 3 dishes out of 5 are terrible. Kokomo Oyster is still good as last time. Dry Scallops fried rice with egg white is very good too. However, Lobsters Roll is everything but no lobster or lobster taste. The other two dishes like junk, either not cook thoroughly or over cooked. Maybe this place is only good for Sashimi. read more

Of course they were busy on a Saturday but they accommodated our party of 7 quicker than I thought. First off, their menu is drastically lengthy..it ranges from sushi to sea to land to broil...etc basically Japanese Asian fusion. A plus is that their service is on point. The servers are diverse and work fast with the busy pace. When the first dish came out every dish came out accordingly in a timely manner. About the food: Volcano lobster roll (special): love the presentation on this dish.. They arrange the dish with a lobster tail at the end and a sliced orange half on the other end and the sushi in the middle. This dish tasted great but I wasn't sure if I could taste the lobster (probably from the other foods messing up my palette). Only $18 for this dish and it's plenty to share with a group. A must try when you're here. Thai style fried rice: just a normal fried rice to me but with cashews and raisins, nonetheless it was tasty. Four seasons roll: the presentation on this beautiful...took them a little bit to prepare this but I can understand why. It was a little difficult to eat this because it was a roll with eel on the inside and crab with tobiko on top... So...it was a bit overwhelming how tall this piece was. $14 for ~10 pieces Pea sprouts: being Chinese, I eat this dish often at home so it wasn't anything special to me. However in this visit my dad bit on a piece of pebble while eating this dish....obviously a complaint was filed and it was taken off our bill.. I came here for the first time for a birthday party, big group, which they were kind enough to split the checks for certain people. The waitresses were nice and friendly especially since we were pretty loud. The inside is pretty nice, clean, and spacious. It has a lot of sitting area,but does fill up quickly. On the outside it may look dead but it's usually not, but I've only been twice so I'm speaking in those two times. The food is good, the first time I ordered terriyaki chicken with rice, which was amazingly good along with the Philly roll. It was all fresh and had no complaints . The second time I had California rolls and avocado rolls. The rolls were pretty small for the price, which was more than Rays Sushi in Hayward. This review is for the lunch specials only. I'd like to give Genghix 3.5 stars as I had a pleasant lunch experience, but not quite a 4 star experience. Walked in on Monday for a late lunch around 2 PM, wasn't too busy but there were a few people in there. Genghix used to be a Chinese and Monogolian BBQ buffet called Genghis Khan a while ago. The interior is... interesting. The ceilings are quite low and there's a definite wooden/wicker theme to the place which makes it seem darker inside that it probably really is. Genghix bills itself as an Asian fusion restaurant but it's really a Chinese and sushi restaurant. Mom and I ordered two lunch specials, the vegetable beef and walnut chicken for $5.99 including salad and soup ($1 extra if you want brown rice instead of white rice). Service was quick and friendly, we got our soup and salad very quickly. The soup was something with tofu and imitation crab, the salad was mixed greens with a sweet dressing. The salad is actually decent sized portion. Onto the lunch specials. Vegetable beef - This was pretty good. There was a good amount of beef and it wasn't overly saucy or salty. Came with baby bok choy, celery, broccoli, carrots, mushroom, and water chestnuts. Walnut chicken - I would have ordered the walnut shrimp but I was having some skin problems and avoiding shrimp since I used to be allergic to it. Their variation of honey walnut shrimp/chicken seems to be a bit different from what you may find in other Chinese restaurants. The sauce isn't smothered all over, it's lightly drizzled and isn't your usual honey and mayo. I'm not sure what it was, but I think there needed to be more of it because the chicken by itself - while fried well - was a little plain. Okay sized portion, not quite enough glazed walnuts though. The presentation of the food was nice and elegant. Chinese food here isn't overly salty or saucy.For $5.99 the lunch specials aren't a bad deal (although I usually expect larger portions of rice), but it seems like the regular menu is a bit pricey. I'd be willing to come back for another lunch special, or maybe when I have a restaurant.com coupon. I have to say though that the staff was conversing quite loudly in the kitchen during the quiet of a 2 PM lunch. It didn't really bother me, but it was noticeable. Genghix's House Greens - as stated earlier, it's only $2 and you get a generous plate of it. The sauce and wonton skin compliments the salad very well. Fire Balls - it LOOKED good. There is wasabi on it, which they didn't state in the menu, which they should have for people who don't like wasabi (like me). Aside from that, the inside has no taste at all, it's just a plain fried ball of stuff (mostly rice, little salmon). Snow White - for $9 this is okay. Nothing really special but I liked it well enough to eat it, although boyfriend thought it had a weird sea salt taste. The first time I came here I was very impressed with the decor and presentation. You can tell a lot of work went into the aesthetics of the place and it was not something I had expected in this Castro valley restaurant. On both occasions I've been here the service was quick and on point. The food was good but there's nothing that really stands out from my first experience here. I was also excited at how much of a variety they serve from sushi to Chinese noodles. It's a Chinese/Japanese restaurant so it's a good place if you want a variety of things. The second visit I had the Tuna tartar and I was disappointed because the tuna wasn't spicy at all. It didn't really have any flavor at all and it didn't look that fresh. What I did like was the bed of seaweed salad and avocado the tuna sat on as well as the tobiko on top. My boyfriend got spinach garlic noodles with shrimp (extra $4) and we both really liked it. If you get this I highly suggest you get a side soup because the noodles alone will feel dry in your mouth and your stomach will feel incomplete. It was a good thing I ordered beef udon so we split our food. I liked how there were a lot of spinach (I think it was spinach) in it besides just beef and noodles. Broth and beef were both good.
