I had heard of this restaurant recently from my father who had heard of this place advertisement on one of the Chinese radio stations. So, my parents and I decided to eat here earlier today for lunch on our way back from Oakland. From the outside of it, it looks very unusual. Definitely much different from a typical Asian restaurant. The same is said inside. Miranda is absolutely correct about this place as this place has both Chinese food and sushi. After all, it is an Asian Fusion restaurant. The three of us ordered several things off of the lunch special and regular menu. There was one other that was ordered off from their daily special. The Shrimp Chow Mein first arrived as too salty, so we asked that it be taken back and redone. It came back a few minutes later and the result was much better. The Whispering Waves was very good. It has several different types of sashimi, which is good for those who likes to have Japanese food and aren't familiar with what particular sashimi is good. The Kobe Beef Sushi was definitely interesting with the beef on the top of the rice. Just wish that the beef was cooked better as it was hard to chew. Finally, the fresh oyster was good. Only downside was that it was tiny. It is definitely a great place to go, especially if you are new to the whole concept of Asian Fusion food. read more

I just always kept thinking this place a buffet but it has been years since I've actually noticed this place again. My college roommate and I came here for a lunch since Isushi was closed (checked on Yelp). I just loved the decor of this place but pretty dark when you first walk in. There wasn't anyone in the front or a bell to hit, so we waited a bit. No one really came by after a while so we just walked in and asked someone. We had a new employee wait on us and he did fairly well on his first day (from what I remember). Food came out fairly quickly but the plates of salad for the lunch menu were huge, a bit sweet for my liking but nevertheless it was delicious. I got a salmon and sashimi bento while my roommate had tempura and California rolls. My salmon seemed a bit undercooked but I rather have undercooked salmon than over. The sashimi was strange; it had a bunch of ginger over it (I'm fine with pickled ginger but not fresh grated ones). I tried to pick it off the sashimi but the flavor of the ginger gave the sashimi a very strange taste. Also the choices didn't have salmon or tuna sashimi...it seemed like white tuna? and something else that seemed like hamachi? It just tasted very fishy and the sashimi was very loose (just didn't have much of a bite to it and flaked apart in my mouth). For my roommate's bento, she only got 1 piece of tempura shrimp and it was very skinny (and much tinier that what I'm use to seeing). The California rolls were decent, nicely rolled though :] There was also a deep fried salmon sushi roll on the bento boxes with sweet and sour sauce. It was a bit strange but it was nice to try something a little different from our dish. Final Thoughts: The prices here seem really steep for the regular menu but the lunch menu is decent (way less choices though). We finally decided to try Genghix. A trusted Yelper friend had given it a good review, and I had a Groupon. What have we got to lose? Sadly, I think we tried completely different dishes than my friend. And because we are big fans of crab, that was the primary source of our disappointment. I've never had a crab wonton I didn't like... until now. Who ever heard of making crab wontons with that fake stuff known as "krab"? But that's what it was. And rather than a creamy cream cheese base, the filling was unrecognizable and soupy. Similarly, my husband ordered a crab meat sushi and also was served the fake stuff. Don't get me wrong. Krab has its place, I suppose. But it doesn't really taste like crab and should be accurately described as imitation. I thought the gyoza were okay. Mr. M thought they were soggy. I got the tonkatsu and it was really dry and tough. The only dish that was sort of palatable was the chow mein, and that was still pretty bland. I appreciate the discount, Genghix. Really I do. I'd like to start off that I wish I could rate Genghix with more stars, but I just can't. My coworkers & I came to have lunch three days ago. The lunch specials were pretty decent & the food tasted good. I had the chicken teriyaki & tempura lunch special for $8 & the servings were quite generous. It also came with miso soup & salad. The waitress was a sweetheart & took care of us. However, that was the end of the good stuff. Halfway through our lunch, a cockroach ran across our table. My coworker caught it under her soup bowl & we called the manager (I think) over. We told him we had a cockroach under the soup bowl. He went to get a wet rag, lifted the soup bowl to let the roach out, smashed/wiped the roach away & walked off. He didn't apologize for the cockroach at all. I don't know about you, but it was unsettling for all of us the rest of lunch. As we left, he was at the exit & still no apology. Needless to say, I doubt I'll be back. No, no, just no. I won't be back. I hate giving this place a bad review as I was looking forward to trying Genghix and hoping it would be good. I enjoyed this restaurant when I was a kid when it was called "Gengia Khan" and had a personalized wok bar. I will start with the good. Ambience is kinda nice when you enter the restaurant. There's no doubt this place is popular and busy. We even actually had to wait for a seat (a first in CV) There are lots of kids and families. The service was nice, attentive, and efficient. Our order was taken quickly and drinks and food came out fast. No complaints on that front. The bad: the food. The fusion concept is fun and exciting but then you start to wonder...with a menu this large (probably over 200 items) how do they manage to keep that much fresh food around? If this were on Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, he would immediately cut this menu by at least 75%. All the food choices sound yummy in theory. None was anything remotely special. -seared tuna with truffle ponzu had an interesting taste and was flavorful but the fish was inconsistently seared and oddly cold and chewy despite being seared. -sushi, probably the best thing we ordered but for the price I would much rather go to an actual "sushi" or Japanese restaurant like Katsu next door. -sake infused clams. Probably the worst thing we ordered. Clams in a watery broth with no flavor except that of black pepper. -garlic spinach noodles with enoki mushrooms. Pretty yummy but only because it's drenched in an unbelievable amount of butter. -"mongol's beef" is horrible. Twice the price of Chinese takeout and only half as good. The meat is chewy and seems very bad quality beef. Possibly frozen. How is this one of the "review highlights" of this place? -XO shrimp. I have passed this place dozens of times. Planning a lunch with a coworker and thought to give this place a try. Arrived a little before noon on a weekday. From the outside it doesn't look like much. The interior makes up for it. Nicely decorated, tons of seating and a sushi bar. The menu is a mile long. Page after page with pictures and descriptions. They have sushi rolls, Chinese, Asian fusion and sashimi. A guarantee that everyone will find something to feast on. I ordered the Singapore vermicelli that normally comes with pork and shrimp. I substituted the pork for chicken. The food took about 15 minutes. My mountain of noodles arrived steaming hot. It was suppose to be spicy according to the little flame on the menu but wasn't. It was good with the huge pieces of chicken and few shrimp along with the grilled peppers and onion. It wasn't greasy. The portion is enough for two meals or to share. Service was okay by the staff, refilling our waters, clearing plates and boxing up the left overs. Not friendly but got the job done so I can't complain. Prices are reasonable. Ingredients are fresh and portions are generous. The place got pretty busy during the lunch rush. Parking is plentiful but can be difficult during peak lunch time due to the other local businesses. read more

I've been coming here for many years for family occasions and have tried a lot on the menu. Their prices have increased and many dishes are overpriced. Their lunch special is a good deal tho (available on weekends too!), you get soup, salad, and a bento or dish. The house salad is my favorite- it has the best dressing and I love that there is arugula combined in the lettuce. I usually always get the sashimi and most of the time it is fresh. Lucy and I had our Holiday lunch here. The exterior of the restaurant looks like, and I am pretty sure it is, a former coffee shop. The interior is attractive and a bit to dark. I had the sashimi and salmon teriyaki combo. It was served with rice, miso soup and a mixed green salad with a wonderful dressing and topped with wonton crisps. There was also 2 pieces of something I could not quite identify, I think they were Brussels sprouts. It was a very satisfying lunch for $9.00.. It was a 4 star lunch Pat and I were not really impressed the first time we went here. I think that perhaps we did a disservice to the restaurant by limiting are selections to one fish. Although we had a lot of rolls they all featured tuna. Aloha: Spicy Tuna, Avocado, White Tuna, Garlic, Ponzu Sauce Monkey Roll: Tuna, Salmon, White Tuna, Kaiware Dynamite Spicy White Tuna, Spicy Tuna Gyoza Sashimi Grade Tuna Tartare: Spicy Tuna, Avocado, Wakame Seaweed I also brought a nice bottle of wine for us to enjoy with our dinner. The corkage fee was reasonable and they put a bucket on the table so it would cool. When my wandering takes me in to the Hayward-Castro Valley area I will stop for lunch again. From Yelp photos, you'd guess that Genghix mostly does sushi. That is not true: there are plenty of other dishes on the menu. I'm a big fan of the clean, simple flavors in their dishes. Compared to basically any other place with Asian/Chinese food, it's not very greasy -- for example, the garlic chicken wasn't dripping with sauce -- so it's closer to what you'd make at home. (Of course, if you want something saucy, the giant photos in the menu can help with that.) Despite being labeled "Asian fusion," the food is still pretty authentic. I guess "fusion" here means they fuse many different Asian cuisines together (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, etc). The most hilarious part about eating here is the service. Somehow, our table had two waiters assigned (I'll call them "Alice" and "Bob") -- and they didn't talk to each other. We told Alice that we weren't ready to order, and about 30 seconds later, Bob came to ask us if we were ready to order. Later, once we'd placed our order with Alice, Bob came back to the table, confused as to where the menus had gone. (I guess this kind of inefficiency is why all the employees seemed super busy, even though they were adequately staffed and the place was kind of empty.) read more

Genghix is my family's go to place to eat good sushi. The prices are reasonable and the sushi is delicious. This review is only for the sushi and not for the cooked dishes. The rolls are what it looks like in the picture shown in the menu. There are many options to choose from and there are options for people who do not like eating raw fish. I personally like the different fish options that they provide and my favorite is the Toro. The toro is somewhat expensive but it is well worth it. Another thing to try is the Kobe beef. The kobe beef is the best ever, no other restaurant does it the same as them. The "oh my god" roll is very good for people who like some spiciness in their sushi rolls. I recommend Genghix for people who like to try something new. Genghix has many options for many people and not everyone has to eat sushi, there are other cuisines to choose from. read more

This is my inlaws go to place! Everyone else in my family loves sushi, so this gives my husband the opportunity to get his fill. My inlaws come here so much that they know everyone that works here. They are always so friendly and treat us really well. We were seated right away and they even gave us a free bowl of snapped peas. I'm pretty sure my inlaws have had every roll on the menu and could tell you the best ones. They always order 2-3 when they go. My husband got two. They always look beautiful when they come to the table and are gone in seconds. Since I'm a picky eater, I just get the chicken fried rice with a side of spicy mayo. It is always delicious and I eat the leftovers the next day. Wish I could give a review on the sushi, but obviously they are doing something right for my inlaws to go almost once a week. read more

Here is what we ordered: - Fire Balls (deep fried spicy salmon) - Mango Delight (fried basic, mango and spicy tuna) - Orange Scallops - Black Pepper Beef - Saba Shio-Yaki (lightly salted grilled mackerel) While the food was good, nothing really stood out as excellent. This place is awful. If it existed in the South Bay, they would go out of biz within 6 months tops. There's no competition around this area. I agree with Izzy O.'s review - the food was insipid. They couldn't get anything right - thai, chinese or japanese! The outside looks like an IHOP or Peppermill. The inside is not as big. There are nice decorations but the plastic Denny's type of seats were torn! All the wait staff are Asian and they should all go work for a Chinese to-go restaurant. Their service was efficient but no service was really involved. They were in a big hurry to get back to where they came from and did not cater to us at all. I got the restaurant.com coupon for $2 - $25 off $50 coupon. It has to be $50 worth of food, not drinks, tax or tip. If you use the coupon, they automatically add 20% tip no matter what even if you're only two people. To our detriment, I ordered the OMG roll as recommended by yelpers. It was the worst roll I've had in a long time. The garlic shrimp was just ok and the leek wrapped in beef appetizer was awful (I wanted to throw up in my mouth). The pad thai had no sweetness and they used the wrong noodle - it was soy sauce chow fun with nuts. I would never come here again. Even if it were for free or if they paid me. Bad service, bad food, torn dining couches - definitely not my style. I think this is where all the non-Asians go to eat (which is not a good sign). read more

Chicken fried rice had a coarse curly black hair. I told the waiter (5'6" male, overweight, spiked up faux hawk) and he questioned, "is that a hair?!". He took it back to the kitchen without an explanation or apology. The service was unprofessional and unacceptable. One of the sushi chefs was chatting on his cellphone while behind the counter. This is really a hidden gem in Castro Valley. The new owners have really done a good job! The sushi is extremely fresh which is my biggest pet peeve with Sushi. In my last review, I finished off by saying that I wouldn't write this place off, even though I wasn't really blown away by the food. I'm really glad I gave it another shot (after purchasing the $15 for $30 Got Daily Deal) because the second time around, it was delicious. My party of three ordered the mixed sashimi platter, the caterpillar roll, spicy tuna roll, and another roll that has cooked salmon on top (the name escapes me). The sashimi was sliced in generous portions, and the fish was definitely of high grade-- the "melt in your mouth" kind of sashimi. The caterpillar roll was also flavorful and showcased a large covering of avocado, the spicy salmon was basic but flavorful, and the final roll was also tasty, though by the time I got around to trying it, I was full and content on the other rolls. The menu is very extensive, so if you don't know where to start, ask the server for a recommendation or two- you won't be disappointed! read more

I'm disappointed in Genghix for the second time in a row and even though the first indication of poor quality was experienced many years ago that first experience was so awful that I did not visit them again for nearly eight years. The first time I was served sashimi so tough I could not chew threw it and when I brought it to their attention they said it's because I bought off the lunch specials -WHAT?!!!!! This time I can't quite put my finger on it but there was something wrong and without visiting the kitchen who knows? Makes me think of Gordon Ramsey shows. I really like going to Genghix. They are a bit on the steep price side for local places, but really, you get a better quality food than most of the places in CV. I love their Crispy Chicken Salad the most. Tip: you can ask for a container of the dressing to take home and put on your own salads. Pretty much any of the sushi I have ordered has been good. yummm.... I don't think I've eaten anything here that I don't like. I've been here a handful of times and I can say the menu never gets old. They have soooo many different dishes, that there is something to satisfy everyone's craving. There are a number of different sashimi and sushi rolls, and everytime I've had it, it has been very fresh. There are quite a few different asian dishes, so it can get a little difficult to choose, since everything looks so good. I hosted a recital after-party for 20 guests here yesterday. As a former restaurant GM, I feel guilty bringing 20 people into any restaurant, but by reserving their banquet room, we were accommodated in such an efficient and friendly fashion, it made me feel like we were welcome there and that the staff didn't hate us at all haha. They also split our check very easily (we didn't even have to ask) so that each party could pay for their own food (I was very impressed). The food was hot and delicious! Several of us were eating there for the first time, and I know it was a big hit and will be a regular spot for many of us, myself included. Like I said though, the waitstaff was truly the highlight of this experience. I even had to be "that person" and ask for a glass of wine cause I forgot to order one initially, and they just asked what I ordered and added it to my individual tab. Stellar service!! I was around the area and I thought oh hey a Mongolian restaurant cos how it sounds, found out its Asian Fusion. Great ambience, nice deco, foodwise: horrible. Crab Wantons: was ok, could be more crunchy and would taste even better. Tom Yam Goong: spicy, less flavorful. 3pc of overcooked shrimps and mushrooms. Lots of onions. Walnut Shrimps: Overpriced, some sour sauce with mayo which is pathetic. Home Sweet Home sushi: def nasty with some sour sauce. Hate it. Eel over rice bowl. Again with some sour sauce! Seriously are they using some expired sauce? Looked at the dessert menu, nothing Asian except for the ice cream flavors. For such horrible food and pricey menu, I really wouldnt recommend to be wowed at their nice ambient. read more
