We have been here for brunch on 12/20. The place is very kids friendly and the waiters are very helpful and patient. Food was good - I had housemade granola with fresh yoghurt. Maybe you're the kind that loves shouting across a small table to be heard, and having to repeat orders twice or so here times to be understood, but it's a deal-breaker for us so (regretfully) we will not be back. Came here for brunch at 11am, and the wait list was already pretty long. Waited about 25 minutes. However I didn't mind this as they have a bar you can order from. I got an orange vodka mocha without the vodka, and my guy got the jalapeño Bloody Mary. I've never been a fan of bloody Mary's but Genie's Cafe has made me one now!! The food was pretty good, needed a bit more sauce on the eggs Benedict but still delicious. The blueberry lemon poppyseed pancakes were yummy too! Not too sweet. We ended up in this place after giving up on a one-hour wait elsewhere (on a Thursday morning!) and excitedly were seated in a couple minutes. However we were disappointed soon after. As a pancake/waffle/French toast lover I normally order something from the griddle but DO NOT ORDER FRENCH TOAST HERE! I wonder if most of the patrons of Genies are those who didn't want to wait in line at Pine St Biscuits... I know that's why we walked in! We didn't have to wait but 5 minutes to get seated here. You walk in and see a big bar area, where all the coffee and alcoholic beverages are advertised. They have a lot of bloody mary options with different kinds of infused vodkas - including the world's hottest pepper paired with a live scorpion! (Not for me!) My friend got a bacon infused bloody mary and it was delicious, but still spicy. Half of us got other alcoholic coffee options, and nobody was disappointed. Their menu was full of breakfast and brunch options, especially for the egg lover. I ordered the country fried steak and would give it about a 3 star rating because I wasn't a huge fan of the sausage gravy. But it was nice and crispy. We all got the potatoes au bryan, and they were pretty basic. Their crispy potatoes may have been better. All of the other plates (denver omelette, eggs Benedict, other omelettes...) were completely cleaned by my friends with zero complaints and smiles on their faces. I even tried two of the omelettes and was pleasantly surprised being an egg hater, so that's really saying something. The wait staff was quick and good for refills. They mixed up some plates and toast orders, but that's nothing that can't be fixed. The pricing wasn't horrible either. I dropped in here for breakfast a couple days ago and everything about it was PERFECT! Luckily, the place was not busy and it was a lot bigger than I had imagined. Our server was quick, helpful, and very kind. I ordered the mushroom omelette, which normally comes with toast and potatoes. I've been on keto for a while now and opted to not have either of those.... our server offered fruit right off the bat and had no issues. I also ordered a side of hollandaise to top my omelette with (if you haven't tried it, DO IT!) We also ordered some bloody mary's which were a HIT! They have so many different options on the menu. We had a delightful breakfast at Genie's today. They've expanded their me unto include numerous gluten-free options, including pancakes! My husband had the chicken sausage scramble and my son had eggs, bacon and a gluten-free blueberry pancake. The service fantastic. French toast!! Get your French toast fix here! It's super fluffy and made to perfection. I tried the eggs Benedict's as well and it was delicious. The portion size is just right, enough for one person but definitely not enough (or too delicious) to share. Parking is somewhat of a nightmare due to the nearby restaurants' popularity, so do planned on circling around the block. Overall it's a solid brunch spot and I'll definitely be back for more! read more

We have friends from out of town that would give this place 5 stars and ALWAYS request to go back when they're visiting! I've been going for many years, and have had both excellent and deplorable service, so my view is a little more tampered. We've ordered food that never showed up, been completely ignored (while all the patrons around us were well taken care of), been to the bathroom when it was seriously disgusting. Plus it's really, really loud (which I believe is to blame for the missing and/or mistaken food orders) and not very comfortable. So why keep coming back? Well, the food is REALLY good. And the people at the bar are always terrific. And, you might have guessed by some of the other reviews -- but there's hardly ever a wait (or much of a wait) even on the weekends. (Plus the bad things I mentioned before seemed to be isolated incidents.) So yes, they get 4 stars from me, even with the hiccups we've experienced over the years. Favorites include: alllll the yummy drinks, plain or special pancakes, the bacon (oooh, the bacon!), the omelets and the benedicts. Kid and baby friendly. We came with our stroller but there isn't enough room at the table. The host provided us with the Koala Kradle which was nice for my baby sleeping in the car seat. Okay, it was a bit gooey. The egg was more like a medium boiled egg on the inside and only appeared like a poached egg on the outside. Genie's was filled at noontime with a very young, more-than-slightly hipsterish crowd. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with quick service from a friendly waiter. The black and white still-life photos on the wall were cool. So for those aspects of Genie's, I mete out four stars. But let's chat about the food, shall we? I ordered the soup du jour and the spring chicken sandwich. I thought it was a bit amusing that when I asked the waiter what the soup du jour was, he responded with, "You are the third person to ask me that, so let me go find out." Did he have to go back each time he was asked to check what the soup of the day was? Was there more than one soup of the day? The soup du jour was navy bean ($3/cup). It didn't have any real flavor, probably because it was mostly just beans and very little liquid or anything else. But a few drops of Cholula hot sauce did help liven up the taste. The spring chicken sandwich was, ummm, interesting. You can get it with salad or fries. I picked fries. My sandwich arrived on a plate splattered with parsley (intentionally) and balsamic vinegar (probably unintentionally). The sandwich was served sort of open-faced on very plain foccacia bread. So if this was a spring chicken, why was the chicken meat so tough? It didn't help that the sandwich was served with brie cheese. I love brie cheese, but not brie cheese where the white waxy sealant is left on the cheese. That's nasty, dude. The aioli on the sandwich, containing a little diced cucumber, was nice and so were the lightly heated wedges of yellow apple drizzled with balsamic vinegar. But the wax strips on the cheese and the tough chicken ruined the sandwich. The shoestring fries were salty and didn't have much of a potato flavor. So factoring in the food, Genie's averages out overall to three stars. One girl, part of a large group seated at the next table, must have thought it was entertaining when she tossed a spoon across the floor and a cute-as-a-button little boy toddled over and picked it up. The girl tossed the spoon a second time with a loud clatter and the boy retrieved it once again. The girl announced that her boy was her "little dog." And apparently, she was his Mommie Dearest. read more

Had a lovely breakfast at Genie's with friends. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, not super fancy but comfortable. We were there pretty much when they opened on a Sunday morning so we beat the morning rush. By the time we left it was hoppin' in there! Our server was very nice and was quick to bring us coffee and water. Our order also came pretty quickly which I always appreciate. I guess we were there early but hopefully that's how it is all the time. Let's see, I had two pancakes so not the most diverse breakfasts but they were big (and pretty dense!) and tasty! Others at our had chicken fried steak with potatoes and a veggie scramble with cottage cheese (she went for the healthy option). Her scramble looked, and apparently was, delicious. The guys liked the chicken fried streak. I didn't see any leftovers on their plates! Next time I would like to venture out and have a different breakfast, maybe one of their scrambles. They looked pretty good. I would recommend this place for a nice, relaxed, low key, and tasty place for brunch. read more

You can take your stinky group of hungover hooligans here. You can take your young, wholesome Mormon family here. When everywhere else is overrun by pretentious jerks, turn to Genie's. After the zombie apocalypse, Genie's will still be here, serving deliciousness for the masses, without any attitude. I've been to Genie's Cafe several times now for breakfast and each time it's been outstanding. The first time I was here they had a breaded pork loin and potatoes on special that was amazing. The other times I've been here I've had a more traditional breakfast with bacon. Their potatoes are wonderful and I love the selection of bread that they offer. Came here with my boyfriend a couple of months ago and it was good. I had eggs benedict. English muffins were crispy, hollandaise was good, and the potatoes here are awesome. I didn't drink anything that morning, but it seems like they have some really good alcoholic drinks and a lot of variety. I wasn't super wowed by the service and the price on our meal ended up being about $40 which I think is overpriced for brunch. Eggs bennie was $13 and IMO is a bit expensive for the small portion you got. I'd give it a shot again because I think it tasted good, but I probably would try something different next time around. read more

In the oddest location is the sweetest spot with attentive yet not intrusive service. I ordered the Mediterranean omelette, which came with mushrooms, spinach, onions, and feta. They happily added tomatoes when I asked. This is served with crispy red potatoes and choice of toast. In a town of over-priced Sunday brunches with an hour wait, this is a terrific surprise. It has been a while since we've been here and it wasn't busy although they did have a steady stream of people, no lines out the door like what we've seen in the past and it might be because the food was average. Lacking the flavors it use to be known for. Everything is there the menu, servers are great but my Huevos Rancheros conceptually was good and the plating perfect but lacked the seasoning I expected. Went to the newer Genie's Too and it was great so when some friends were visiting I suggested the original due to location. The wait was long, which is normal for brunch, but then also when we were at the table. The server forgot to bring water for 3 people even after a friendly reminder. When the food finally got there it was not very good. I can say this with certainty because it was literally our 3rd day brunching in a row and it was just low quality or not made well or both. I'm writing this because the folks we were meeting were only around for a short time and I feel like I suggested a weak option. Look toward newer small brunch spots. Since the wait for pine state biscuits was crazy we decided to go across the street to Genie's. What we didn't know was the wait was just as long there for Sunday brunch but you would wait INside for your table instead of a line around the block across the street. Plus during our wait we had the most delicious Bloody Mary's- one jalapeño and one habanero. They were perfectly spicy. For brunch I had the crab cake Benedict and my boyfriend had a special "the bay of pigs", which was essentially a scallop Benedict. His won out 100%. The crab cakes were tiny on mine and didn't really shine, while his scallops were perfectly cooked. We both had the potatoes O'Brien and that was a great decision, with a side of sausage gravy to share. Overall it was good, service was ok, the drinks for sure won us over. read more

Genie's has easily become one of my favorite places to get breakfast in Portland. My favorite dishes are their scrambles and the white chocolate chip & hazelnut pancakes are amazing! Really good portions for the price and the employees are always friendly. They have a wall of infused vodka for their bloody Mary's which are likely fantastic. 3 stars for food. I had the biscuits and gravy. Received regular potatoes instead of o'brian potatoes (I love peppers and onions!) so that was a bit of a let down. Over-medium egg to me was over very very easy. Biscuits and gravy themselves were good, especially the gravy. Mom had the special caprese hash which was very good. Note, it's extremely loud in here. Genie's. Oh, just to say the name makes my saliva glands work overtime. That being said, I do believe that I will take every visiting friend I have from other lands (being a transplant myself and all) to Genie's for at least one meal. Wow, that run-on sentence was almost as long as the line to enjoy such a splendid breakfast at this fine establishment on a rainy Sunday morning. Try a Bloody Mary while you wait, but beware, this is a meal in/of itself (and if you're a weakling, ask to have it dumbed down to suit your needs, it's crazy spicy). I think half of Portland was here getting breakfast when I was here - the streets were empty but this place was packed! For good reason, too. After a short wait (we put our names on the list, someone else forgot to do so and wound up waiting far longer) with some coffee-in-hand, we were seated at a slightly shaky mid-century diner table loaded with a rack of jam packets and sugar. I had been looking over the menu since shortly after we came in the door and was still waffling on what to get. A decision while my breakfast mate ordered later, I was enjoying a lovely scramble. I have no idea what kind of magic they put into their breakfasts but this was exactly what I wanted as soon as it was set in front of me and I'm not a big fan of traditional breakfasts.
