Their entry into Portland Nacho Week looked the most appealing of all the choices. Points for creativity: lasagne sheets replaced traditional tortilla chips. Taste-wise: meh on the "chips", but thumbs up on the toppings. The 2 Birds, 1 Stoned cocktail paired well with the food. Their "glassware" is sure to elicit comments. Panna Cotta with cherry compote served in a memorable mini bathtub type vessel was decent. Mixologist was friendly. QR code for a menu, but you order with a person. The atmosphere seemed a bit disoriented, I overhead a server apologize many times. This was not a calm dining experience. High stress actually. I think the Nacho Week threw them off. And the three people with their obstructive equipment on a blog shoot added to the negative vibe. I dread parking in this area so choose your times. Requested a paper receipt, but unavailable. Went here twice with friends and we thought it was a cute spot, and really enjoyed the cocktails and food we had, so decided to do a small gathering here for my work holiday event, after seeing posts sharing that they hosted such events. We booked it through Instagram DMs and paid a deposit, but our booking wasn't communicated to the staff working the night of the event. We arrived and discovered they had no indoor seating for us and were left to sit outside, in the winter, with no outdoor heaters. We had a vegan guest we'd confirmed there'd be vegan options for, but that also hadn't been communicated, so there was 1 item she could eat. It was a disappointing situation and would have been great to hear from the business after, but I never heard from anyone. Walked into this cozy little gem for a late evening drink and snack and immediately knew we chose correctly. The moody red lighting + minimalist décor? Sexy without trying too hard. The vibes were vibing. The cocktails are quirky in the best way and actually taste as good as they look (which is rare). We ordered the "Birds Aren't Real," served in the cutest bird-shaped cocktail glass. It was dangerously good -- the kind of drink that makes you say "just one more" and suddenly it's not just one more. The festive mint tail detail was adorable, we had a moment! We also had the Maitake Mushroom Dip with wonton chips and crème fraîche, served hot. Listen. This dip was heavenly. The wonton chips were crispy, light, flaky perfection and we absolutely demolished that plate. Safe to say we'll be back -- especially because we cannot wait to try the new cocktails on the menu. Malpractice Bar is a small bar with well composed cocktails and a varying menu of artful small bites you can split. We stopped in for the food residency of Hiori PDX. Hiori is modern minimalist small plates with Japanese ingredients. It is flavored by ingredients. It is not traditional Japanese food. It is more like a Spanish Michelin interpretation of Kaiseki. We had the scallop toast. It's not your hipster-big-toast. It is a 2 cm square of lightly toasted Japanese bread, shokupan, sweet and buttery in itself. A slice of room temperature uncooked scallop about half a cm thick, a creamy dollop, a squiggle of house-made maybe a soy-garlic-japanese rice vinegar reduction, and a tiny green garnish, completes. There was a tiny hot spice in there somewhere. It would be at home as a hors d'oeuvres at the Met Gala if they could reproduce it at scale and fresh, which is probably impossible. But you can get it delivered by the chef immediately after it is made at Malpractice! I was after one of Hiori's previous dishes, hamachi sashimi and fruit with some unusual Japanese condiments. The cocktails are inventive with layered ingredients and the bartender can make non-alcoholic cocktails. They have a large selection of spirits not found elsewhere, some from Canada. It's small, seating about 20, including at the bar. The interior is clean and minimal. Good choice of music. It is a two person operation, bar, and food. Good date spot until they have a line. I discovered Hiori through a pop-up list. I spoke with the chef, excellent person who has been paying his dues cooking with others. I'm keeping an eye on Hiori PDX around town, and the ever-evolving menu at Malpractice. It would not be unexpected that Malpractice will guest more chefs to notice. Some of the area near Water is paid parking and some toward MLK is free, for now. Malpractice is a small bar, in relatively quiet Central Eastside industrial district in the Cargo building. Nate the m'bate was quite the bartender keeping my girl and I on spontaneous conversations. Food was amazing by Hiori and drinks were delicious. A cute little spot for drinks and snacks. We stayed until closing and definitely will be back to try more drinks. read more

Food and drinks were excellent. We were there an hour and 15 minutes. We ordered after 10 minutes. We received our drinks after 20 minutes. We ordered two dishes. The first came after 40 minutes. The second never came, after mentioning it three times to our server. At the one hour 15 minutes time, our server said it would take another 8 minutes but she would comp us. We declined, paid the bill and left. We were patient, yet at that point ready to leave. We know they were swamped and we know they were expecting a private party shortly after we left. If you go, plan to be relaxed and there a long time. read more

Cute new little bar in the industrial area... feels very New York ish since it is small (6 tables plus a few bar seats) and tucked away. They didn't have the non alcoholic drink I wanted so I tried the only other one they were offering (even though 4 are advertised on their instagram). Wasn't a huge fan... it didn't taste like much. 3 stars on the drink. But 4 on the cute, vibey atmosphere. I had the patty melt, it was good. They were doing a pop up for food, so you pay separately for drinks and food. I would go back to try it again and to try a different non alcoholic drink and a different food pop up. Small bites, but delicious! Small dining room which was lovely, had outdoor seating but it was raining when I went so not in use. We got the one open table about an hour before close (9 pm or so) on a Wednesday I imagine there's a wait on weekends or when normal people eat. Menu is ever-changing so available via QR code on the table. The oysters were fantastic (we chowed them down before I considered a pic - sorry). Same goes for the steak tartare. Very cute atmosphere to grab one or two drink during happy hour (from 4-6) with a friend or two. Those drinks are absolutely delicious, but on the pricey side for a cocktail, so I do suggest going during happy hour to save a couple dollars if you don't wanna spend $17 on a cocktail. But the drinks are worth it. They are delicious. Also recommend grabbing a couple appetizers. All their plates are small plates. We got the oysters and they were delicious. There's only several seats inside and a small restaurant so I can get kind of busy fast. I felt like there need to be more servers. Overall, a great experience for a quick drink with a friend.
