There are better sushi restaurants on the island but if you're looking for a cheaper version, then there's Genki. This restaurant use to have the conveyer belt but a redesign over a year ago turned the restaurant into a made to order from a touchscreen restaurant. They have regular menus but ordering is done on the touchscreen by type of sushi and price. Once the food is ready it comes out on a Shinkansen type train to your table. The prices have recently gone up as the lowest priced items are now over $2 and the highest priced items being over $6. I tried to stay on the lower end of the spectrum but my bill came out to $20, and that was with 6 plates and didn't even come close to having actual fish. Overall what was once a budget friendly sushi restaurant is rising in price as is everything else. If you want to have actual sushi I would go to another restaurant. read more

Went here on a Sunday early dinner a little before 5. No line at all...was seated immediately, but there were other tables so not necessarily dead. They will take your temperature before letting you enter. No parties bigger than 5 (the large booths probably hold 6). If you come after 6, the wait can be long (an hour or more) as they I believe are only seating at 30% capacity per Mayors recommendation. Hand sanitizer is immediately available as you enter. Booths are closed every other booth, and some rows of booths are completely closed. Outdoor seating is available for anyone interested in that, which is nice! Drink orders were taken promptly after seating. My kids ordered the kappa maki sushi roll (cucumber, rice, and nori). They have the touch screen order system which is fun for the kids...but you gotta keep an eye on what they are ordering because it WILL come out, haha. Sometimes it gives them a "slot machine"game that they can win a prize on too. Kappa maki Sushi is always their favorite. That or California rolls. They also ordered one of the edamame (soybeans) and one of the udon tamago soups (thick noodle soup with broth and green onions and slices of scrambled egg). These items keep my kids coming back all the time and are pretty consistent. The kappa maki rolls come with 6 small pieces each. I'm not a big fan of the way they serve the edamame. It's chilled and has no sea salt. I prefer it steamed or warmed with sea salt. I ordered a few types of sushi rolls, as well. I got one ebi fry roll (fried shrimp), one soft shell crab roll (with fried soft shell crab) and one spicy tuna roll. These rolls are 4 pieces each. All were pretty good, my favorite is the soft shell crab roll. Very crunchy and has a good sauce on top. For me, these 12 pieces filled me up but for some, they order a lot of food there. My wife and two kids and myself had about 8-9 plates. The table next to us with 2 larger adults and 2 older children had around 35-40 plates. Some folks in Hawaii can really put the food down! Impressive! My wife ordered the California roll, the tuna bomb, and some French fries seasoned with what looked like furikake (seaweed, sesame). I have tried the tuna bomb before. It's an inari type sushi and they are much better than they look! The fries were not something I'd recommend. In general, I'm not often impressed with the fried dishes they make at Genki. All the orders come out on a "train" system that stops at your table, makes a bell sound, you remove the plates, and then send it back using the touch screen system. Again, you gotta be aware of what your kids are doing. Sometimes they will want to put their hand up there when it's not theirs, or derail the train. It's a fun idea but it can at times go wrong. For some odd reason, the kitchen twice sent us empty plates which I'm glad we returned to the kitchen. If you were to remove it and leave it on your table, you'd be charged for an item (they tabulate your order based on how many of each colored plate was visible on the table). When you're done you use your touchscreen to call the waiter for your check. I will say the service was very good. The waiters often checked for refills on our drinks, and when one item was taking a little longer than expected, the waiter asked if it had come and when we told him it hadn't, he went to check up on it (you will have multiple waiters, not just one). The waiter who gave us our bill was very friendly and my 3 year old daughter enjoyed interacting with him. You pay at the front register, where they have plastic screens separating you from the cashier. Overall, Genki is a fun place for family lunches or dinners with young kids especially. The sushi isn't the best in the world, but the prices are very reasonable and it comes out quickly and is made to order. Service is always solid with the multiple waiters cycling around the dining room and the ability to call them using the touch screen. Place seems very clean at all times and very considerate of the COVID-19 hygiene requirements. Give them a try if you have never been! read more

Good food, fun location (literally right across from the Fun Factory arcade and theater), and cool delivery system with conveyor belts and an interactive menu via tablet at your table. It's pretty fun for the kids to pick food they'll actually eat! Also, I know this doesn't matter to a lot of people but some soda dispensers are created better than others. Their's was really well carbonated! Loved the first 3 rolls that show up on the tablet menu under rolls. I remember it being the 2 dynamite rolls and the volcano roll. I was whatever about the crispy chicken and garlic chicken. The garlic chicken was pretty dry and the crispy chicken like some other items just felt a little overpriced for the serving size. Our grandchildren always love going to Genki when we come to visit and Genki has gotten worse every time we come back for birthdays or special occasions (5+ times). The service was bad. No one came back to check on us if we needed anything. Ordering was impossible because they didn't have all the sushi available. Being charged for items that we didn't receive was also unacceptable. Then to expect a large tip is beyond my comprehension! We left a tip but Genki need's employee training on customer service and satisfaction then they can expect bigger tips! read more

Genki in Maui is the same as Oahu. The bullet express is the newest concept of fast service. You order on a tablet and a bullet express tray comes straight to you. There is less interactions with the staff. They only greet you, tally your plates and ring you up at the register. The food was okay. The garlic chicken was hot and the stuffed mushroom was warm. The temperature of the food was not consistent. The spicy tuna bomb was good. We didn't even get our two hot teas. Overall, I'm glad I found a familiar restaurant. read more

This sushi place is in a mall. You have to wait outside since they have limited seating. We waited about 20 minutes. The menu is a touch screen. I'm gluten free, so I missed having a person to ask questions to for the menu. The food came out on a conveyer belt, and came out pretty quickly. There are only 4 pieces in a roll (to be aware when you order). One of my daughter's rolls had a hair in it . Since you don't have a server checking on you, I had to walk up to show it to them. They apologized and sent another one. The edamame didn't come with salt (so again I had to go up and find a server to get salt). They don't have gluten free sauce (like Tamari) and didn't know what that was. (I had to find a server to ask). My son's rice wasn't very good. The rolls were fine, nothing super tasty or that stands out. The staff (in yellow shirts) were nice! We won't come back. I think with some tweaks, they can be better. read more

Luckily, the two Genki restaurants on Maui weren't affected by the 2016 hepatitis A epidemic. This location in particular was closed for renovations. But, as you can see from my previous review, I did eat their now defunct Dynamite Scallop Mayo which was the cause of the outbreak. I was thankfully already immunized due to a past international trip! ATMOSPHERE: The place has been completely overhauled. Gone are the bright lights, light-colored decor, and best of all, that nasty conveyor belt that went round and round with many foods left uncovered and capturing nasty germs and who knows what else. The current look is warmer, a bit stoic, but looks great. In place of the sushi carousel are 12 rails that shoot little "bullet trains" from the kitchen direct to your table with your plates on top like cargo. Great idea! Seating consists of a small bar counter and booths. Booth seating is high and shallow, making for an uncomfortable sitting position with our legs dangling, for me anyway. Dining is a little more intimate now as the booths have privacy blockers in between the rail systems. MENU: Gunkan sushi (usually 2 pieces and not a roll), hand rolls, traditional rolls, nigiri, rice bowls, chicken and seafood apps, somen noodles, miso soup, desserts. In addition to my favorites of chicken karaage and somen salad, I tried a new app that was recommended by a co-worker. FOOD: Stuffed Mushrooms - 3 good sized mushrooms caps were stemmed and stuffed in a slightly spicy creamy/sweet/savory mixture of crunchy onions, mushroom stems, and imitation crab. Very tasty. SERVICE: Ever since they re-opened, they've been even busier. I was greeted immediately as I entered. We had a short 20 minute wait on a Saturday night, which was perfect timing to grab a quick beer at a neighboring restaurant. They won't seat you until your entire party is present. The male host was very informative as he guided us through their new tablet ordering menu, which is a great new feature as you can not only keep track of your tab, but also summon the server should you need something, just like on an airplane lol! Due to their debacle of 2016, I observed servers spraying down booth seats and tables after patrons left. Yes! TIP: When your train arrives, take your plates off of it THEN press the pinging tablet screen. My first experience with this sent our food back into the kitchen LMAO. We just had to go and try the new bullet train system. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the entire place was renovated. I really like it. It's modern and very clean. We went on a Monday night hoping that it was slow. I can't say it was, but we were seated w/ in 5 min of walking in. Their greeting/seating system still needs work, but I suppose all the workers are still getting used to the new floor layout. The bullet train runs adjacent to all the tables. You can either order using the tablets on each table or w/ the waitress. Ordering via the tablet is simple and quick. The only downside is that you can only order 4 plates at a time. So it was a little irritating that we had to start a new order mult times. However, the plates came out quickly and the new ordering system occupied my 8 year old while we waited. I found it odd that the waitresses still count the plates rather than use the system to calculate the bill. And what would be great is if we could pay for the bill by using the tablet instead of at the register. But they're not at that level of technology yet, I guess. Quality of the food is the same. It's obvious that some of the items are still premade and refrigerated (cucumber was ice cold and rice was a little hard). You get what you pay for, right? For a quick fix of sushi, Genki is the place to go. It is 'fast food' sushi, so don't expect the freshest fish, presented to you like a work of art. For something like that, I would recommend Miso Phat Sushi. But for the price you pay, it is alright. Sushi comes directly to your table after ordering it from their digital tablet, which is assigned to each table. The tables are small, so large groups over four, will need to occupy another table. The service can be slow during peak hours. They are noon (lunchtime) and early evenings (dinner time). If you see a crowd outside the door waiting, that's an indicator that it's peak hours. The wait will probably be 30 min or more to sit down. And expect your orders to arrive very slow and sporadically. It very frustrating if you are craving sushi. So avoid peak hours if you are starving for sushi. Genki can customize thirst orders, to a small degree. For example, if you don't want the sauce that normally comes on the sushi, you can let the waitress know. My wife likes a lot of their sushi without their sauce. Make sure you place these special orders as soon as you sit. They sometimes take longer to come out than your guests who are ordering from the tablet. For military, they do offer a 10% discount off the bill. They will not ask you, so be sure to tell them when you call for your check. They also have a rewards card that gets stamped according to how much you spend. If you forget to bring your card, ask for another. You can combine the reward cards. read more

Good, quick sushi place located in Maui Mall. Central location. Free parking all around the mall. Although I don't eat sushi, I love that there's other items to choose from. My favorites are: hot dog roll, string bean nigiri, gyoza, spam nigiri, edamame, and chicken karage. Love ordering with the tablet (orders are right and always get to us fast). Servers help with drinks and closing your check, but other than that, don't expect much. Sometimes there's a long waiting line, but they give you a numbered ticket so you know when it's your turn. Tons of very local style kinds of sushi - poke (Hawaiian raw fish), poke and inari, salmon and onions, mochiko chicken, Japanese soba noodle salad, Volcano rolls (spicy tuna covered with Hawaiian sauces). Super ono food here! Best thing about Genki Sushi are the ROCKING servers! There were about 5+ people working super hard. Customer service is awful. I used the QR code to be on the waitlist. (1) When I got the text to go to the front, nobody was there and whoever saw me wouldn't acknowledge me lol. (2) I said thank you to the guy pouring me water and he didn't say anything which came across as rude to me. (3) Then they asked everyone but my table how they were doing (only 1-2 other tables & they were slow enough to be talking on the side). (4) Then when we were given the reciept, they just laid it on the table without saying a word. It feels like the employees are in high school and they choose who they want to be nice to. Me and my sister usually eat here once a week. The sushi is absolutely delicious! I usually order a spicy tuna, Dynamite spicy Tuna, Fried Squid combo, Garlic Salmon, Baked Mussel and a Diet Coke. As of right now my review is at 3. Mainly because I find it difficult to get a server to come to your table. It's not all the time, but most of the time and because of this refills on drinks or extra condiments like Garlic Mayo take a while. Sometimes they don't come at all. Also a 3 because my Diet Coke has always been flat every time I go. Not a big deal though I still recommend this place to anyone and everyone. Sushi is guaranteed to be great and service is fine. Naturally, I want to leave her a tip as this was the best customer service I've ever experienced here (& I come to eat here all the time). Jaz said she wasn't able to take our tip, & another worker interrupted and told us we "need" to put the tip in the tip box. First of all, that worker needs to mind her manners as we weren't even talking to her. Second of all, I feel that if customers want to tip a specific person, they should have every right to do so. Two minutes later I walk into Genki and the host tells me that there's going to be a 20 to 30 minute wait. Are you LAZY enough to just walk us to our table and ask if needed anything to drink?! Mind you we did not even get something to drink until like 10 min we were sitting. So anyways, we ordered but couldn't even eat it yet because there wasn't any chopsticks or wasabi dishes on the table! Servers were no where to be found so I called the "call button" literally still waited for another 10 min to finally get some chopsticks. At this point I was OVER it. There was a interview going on in front of our table and I overheard the manager saying how she wants to bring back the customer service since the Oahu manager was managing this location as well and did not teach the servers anything. Genki Sushi is a great spot to take the kids! My daughter and nieces always beg me to take them here. Ordering is fun and interactive for them because they get to choose what they want from the iPad and watch as their food comes shooting down through their bullet express. Also, if you order a dessert, you get to play their slot game. The first time we did it, we won a genki sushi lanyard that the server brought out to us. Also, expect to wait to get a booth, as they are always busy! But the staff are able to keep up with the turnover. If you're craving sushi on a budget, Genki is the place to go. The only issue I have here is the inconsistency with the sushi. Sometimes it's on point, down to the presentation. Other times it'll be sloppy as if it were rushed. I like that they offer bentos for a reasonable price- for about $7.99 you'll get 2 choices of sushi as well as an entree item. On weekends they can get pretty busy but it's not much of problem given that people tend to eat fast. The servers are helpful and friendly.
