I have been to many barbers over the years, but I always find myself coming back to Geno's for a proper haircut. Before I discovered this place, I used to rely on Yelp and would visit the nearest shop with good reviews and decent photos. What I didn't realize at the time was that most of those places either gave me a haircut I didn't ask for or made the whole process frustrating, even when I had an appointment. Geno runs the shop entirely on his own, which gives it a personal and consistent touch you don't find at larger places. Because of that, he is usually booked a few weeks in advance, so it's best to plan ahead. He does not take walk ins, but if you give him a call, you might get lucky with a last minute cancellation. I just moved to the OC in January and went to a couple of barbers. Wasn't disappointed but not thrilled either. My friend suggested Gino. I had just had another haircut, so the wait for an appointment was no problem. I went today and was so wowed by Gino and his haircut. His shop is so cool and he plays the best music. Let me preface this by saying that I have never had a haircut I loved more than the one Geno gave me. Old school guys like things done a certain way, and true to his 5-star rating, Geno's Custom Haircuts does not disappoint. Not knowing the guy, and basing everything on the Yelp reviews left before me, I decided to give Geno a call. Phone went to answering machine (first plus: he will not interrupt a cut in order to answer the line and chat), so I left Geno a message. Got a call back within a few minutes and it was a no-chip-on-his-shoulder, friendly voice on the other end of the line, getting my appointment set up for 2 weeks out (hey, the guy's in demand for a reason). I showed up on my given day and time, and was greeted by Geno at the door. I was actually trying to find the right suite, but Geno was kind enough to step out and walk me in (I know, I sound very squirrelly here lol). Upon entrance, I could not be happier. The shop was clean, smelled great, and there was great bits and pieces of Americana and B&W's of fine musicians lining the walls, as well as some awesome tunes poppin' out of the box in the back. Geno got right to work and started snipping away. He made it clear that it is his name on the sign outside, and for this reason, it's an absolute must that I leave happy -- I like that mentality -- it sets up the business-client relationship properly, from the get-go. He's great with the shears and the clippers, and I've never had someone spend so much time making sure that the blend (or 'fade' for you young cats) is absolutely perfect -- no stray hairs and clean as a whistle. The guy can hold his own in any conversation and goes above and beyond in making you feel comfortable and like he's known you longer than he really has. This is generally good when someone is holding pointy-objects close to my face and near my neck lol. Geno goes out of his way to ask a lot of questions about how you like things to look and your preference (tapers, sides, blends, burns, etc). The guy knows his work. I walked out smelling fresh, about 3lbs lighter, and happy to tip for a job well done. I will not go to anyone else moving forward. Give Geno a try -- from the aesthetics to the actual skill and finished product, I'm confident you'll walk out pleased. read more

After going here once, I REFUSE to get my mop chopped by anyone other than Geno's skilled masterful hands. I swear, walking into his chop shop is nothing short of like going back into time. Linoleum floors, old style barbers chairs and he's even got Count Basie pumping through the speakers. I live off the edge and a lot of times, i just come in with no specific idea as to how my hair should look. I just say "Geno, impress me" and I have YET to leave his shop not looking like a million bucks. All his products are vintage too: Pinauds, Clubman, and Murrays. I've been coming here for years. Geno is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, and he plays the absolute best music in his shop. He is definitely a fan of good jump blues with upright bass and lots of harmonica. The shop is clean and Geno gets the job done with professionalism and great conversation. He cuts all styles of hair. My style is very "rockabilly" and he always finishes my cut with a coat of fresh Murray's and a splash of aftershave on the sides. The only way to get a same day appointment is if someone cancels because he's usually booked 3 weeks in advance. I've been to places that make me wash the grease out of my hair before they'll cut it, Geno is ok with the grease and that's ok with me. Got a great haircut from Geno. I told him what I was going for and he asked questions to make sure he wouldn't make any mistakes. He got it perfect. The mops been looking good for a few weeks. I will be setting up an appointment soon though. Geno is very efficient and very thorough, he will give you a very detailed haircut and make sure you don't look like a square. Never again will I settle for some random hole-in-the-wall barber. Geno's is where it's at. My typical issue with barbers is that I tell them: "Cut it shorter. He was booked 3 weeks in advance, so I made an appointment, as he doesn't take walk ins. Some have a problem with that, but I don't. Okay, I was really debating on writing a review, only for the mere fact that it is already hard to get an appointment with Geno (from what I now know), and I didn't want to contribute to making it any harder. The detail, the 1 on 1 communication, the old school vibe and the music; brings back to memories of when my Dad use to take me to the barber when I was a kid. If I could give 10 stars I would! Geno is the best! Work is consistently above average, Geno is always friendly, and the shop is always clean and follows all Covid precautions. I would highly recommend. You do need to call ahead, as he is very busy. Ask to be added to a wait list if you can't get in right away. He always calls us when something opens up if we had to cancel our appointment for some reason.
