I finally made it to Karavela's which I had bookmarked forever! I make constant trips to Casa…read moreGrande and always wanted to try this place because I love Peruvian food. Well, today happened to be Tuesday and outside of their door they had posted specials and one was for Taco Tuesday. Three tacos for about eleven dollars and some change. So I took advantage of that and ordered one adobada and two chicken tacos. The tacos were brought out with three bottles of salsa; one green, two reds at different spice levels. The tacos fell flat! The adobada was hard and crispy with little flavor. The meat was cut too small in my opinion, which may have resulted in its crispness. The two chicken tacos were bland, lacked flavor. I did like the fact they were cut thicker and were meaty and juicy. But it needed seasoning. The sauces also lacked flavor. None were spicy. Even the small bottled red salsa which I assumed was the spicier one wasn't spicy at all. After this experience, I don't think I'll be back anytime soon, but you'll never know! Like I said, I love Peruvian food; so maybe that's where their forte lies!

The tacos have to now be the 2nd best I've had around, definitely really good, and I drank the consume, so so good!!! The Lomo Saltado was different that what my father makes, but it was still 1,000% better than any place I've seen in Arizona! Everything was made fresh, and tasted really good! I'm definitely gonna have to keep an eye out for when they have the Ceviche on hand!

Quesadillas are the best I've found in AZ - crisp outside, cheesy & meat filled inside, made to blow your socks off. *Street Queen Quesadilla is 5-6" *Extreme Queen is 13.5" Fat with tender Carne Asada, onion, lime, cilantro, cheese & guacamole. And, yep, you can order the big ones with your choice of meat or go straight cheese. If I'm feeling extra hungry or have to share, I get the big one! Both are perfectly priced and make me not want to eat afterwards so the great taste can linger longer on the lips. Say that fast, lol. Bonus: if you're feeling like extra fun, you can order a cocktail or good tequila, too. Can't say enough nice stuff about this small, locally owned taco joint. They've got another one in Maricopa if you're up there, but the Casa Grande location is the original. TLDR: Yum. Must eat here. Prices are good. Service is quick, accurate & done with a smile.

We got the taco combo plate and 3 single tacos. I chose the chicken, pork and steak and he got chicken, steak and birria ($1.25 extra). First off, these street tacos are packed with meat which was good to see. I love trying street tacos and I've tried many. For me, the flavor of the al pastor (pork) was the best of the meats. Second to that was the steak. The others didn't have a lot of noticeable flavor imo. I did slather each of them in the red and green salsas to add some moisture and added heat. As for the side of rice and beans, I liked the beans, they were cooked well and had good flavor. The rice we got was hard and seemed to have been in a warmer or something for too long since it was crispy and dry. This could have been a "one off" type situation. The interior dining area is small but that's to be expected for this type of taco shop. The staff there today seemed nice and genuinely care about their customers.

We went last night to their new location and decided to come back, 2 days in a row, I never do that but I really wanted more catfish cause it's THAT good.. I didn't even have lunch I was looking so forward to going back... I showed up AT 5 after calling and being told they open at 5. I waited OVER an hour for someone else to show up to get my food. After 40 min, the guy was like, "we will take care of you for waiting so long, promise" not only did they NOT "take care of me" dude didn't even tell the lady I wanted catfish before he left so that was another almost 10 min on top of the hour I had to wait! And then. I get three of THE smallest pieces of catfish I have ever paid for. Not cool. Won't be back for a looooonnnggg time.

It's a minor thing but it makes the wait go by fast and you never have to wonder if you should ask about the status of your order. So far we've tried the chicken strip basket and the potato salad, both were amazing! I am surprised but so so grateful we've got a place this good in Maricopa Forgot to mention that we found this place yesterday and we're already back tonight.

We weren't asked what spice level we want and luckily I thought of it in time because it would have been way too mild for us if I hadn't. It's a bit of a pet peeve for me to not be asked what spice level I want when there are spice levels available and for it to be assumed that I want my food mild. Once I asked, the spice levels were indicated as mild, medium, spicy, extra spicy and extra-extra spicy. We tried: -Thai Curry Vegetable with Eggplant, tofu, shiitake mushroom and potato. We asked for extra spicy which was not overly spicy but had good flavor. We got chilli crisp on the side which was actually on the spicy side here. Once I added a good amount of that I got some tears. The "Thai" curry reminded me more of a Japanese Curry and not what would hit the spot for me when I want Thai curry but it was enjoyable. I wished there was more of each element in it- More tofu, more potato etc. This dish is fully vegetarian and a good vegan option. - A sweet potato tempura sushi roll with eel sauce. - A cup of Tom Yum soup. We ordered it with fried tofu instead of the shrimp, extra spicy , and it was pretty good, especially with the chilly crisp. It does have some shrimp paste here in the broth so not vegetarian. No chicken broth or beef broth otherwise, just the shrimp paste. Service was pretty good. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! An Evie favorite! -
