New(er) customers beware. Deeeeeeeep customer loyalty. Judy is a very nice lady, and the haircut she administers for $18 is looks like an $18 haircut. Today (Sunday), I had a bad experience. Like other reviewers, I have tried to come here and there have "Sorry, we are closed today" signs up, which is pretty frustrating. So I have made it a habit to call before I attempt to go in just so I know she is in fact open. (She does always pick up the phone if she is in.) When I called, she told me there were 3 people in line currently, so I decided to drive over as I live about 5 minutes away. Upon arrival, there were two people waiting, and one getting his hair cut. Three more people walked and two of them were given haircuts. As soon as she had the second gentlemen sit down, I decided to leave as I had not idea what number in line I was. I understand that maybe the first guy ran to the bank during his wait, but the conversation between Judy and the second guy made it sound like he had been in much earlier that day(and didn't wait then), and also that he likely had been a longtime customer. To be clear, I do not mean to criticize Judy's return customer appreciation, which is awesome as she is an incredibly nice lady, but she was not clear about what place in line I was. Presumably, the two guys who were waiting before I entered, were still in front of me... And watching the two guys come and get priority was pretty frustrating. (What if more VIP customers came in???) I have received 3 or 4 haircuts from Judy over the past year, and have tipped her $5 per cut, which seems fair(maybe it's totally not, I have no idea what the SF Sunset standard is). Judy is really nice, it is a bummer what happened today. That being said, if you know you are going to be busy on Sunday, hire someone for that day, or simply be more clear on the walk-in order. She's the only person working at her own shop, and she works every single day of the week. Judy is also very good at remembering what people prefer when it comes to their cut, and it's nice to have such an attentive person take care of your hair for an amazing price for quality that is unparalleled. Just got back from getting my eyebrows waxed, and I must say I am impressed. I don't get waxes very often (like, ever) so I was worried at first. Though I was confused about why my haircut was $15 vs. the $12 advertisement...she basically trimmed an inch off of my hair so it wasn't anything fancy. Judy is excellent with children and adults alike. At $12 per quality haircut, the price is a steal, too. Before we found Judy, taking my toddler to get his haircut was an ordeal my wife and i postponed until his hair became unbearably shaggy. Thanks to Judy that has all changed. Now haircuts are a father-son event. With a gentle touch, Judy deftly navigates my son's bopping and swiveling head with her clippers (which are surprisingly quiet/gentle yet effective) and scissors while managing to avoid nicks and tears. My son also likes getting his haircut here because the shop faces a Muni line and park (providing sufficient entertainment for each visit), and Judy kindly gives him a sticker and balloon after every visit. I initially stopped by because I was inn desperate need of a trim! I am pleased to say that I have found a new go to spot. Judy always does a wonderful job at making my hair look healthy while keeping as much of the length as possible. She is so sweet and professional. I don't need someone who talks to me nonstop but I do like how she is personable. While I called to see if there was a wait and she said no there were a few people ahead of me and I am not surprised! I've been searching for a good haircut place that is friendly to a student's income and yet can satisfy my expectations of a good haircut. I was visiting my boyfriend and decided I need a haircut before my birthday in a few days! My hair was previously cut in berkeley with a coiffure who didn't know what the he'll she was doing. In the end I had no layers and just thick straight hair. I came here asking for layers and side bangs to fix that $25 regret... for $15, Judy not only pointed out that my hair was not cut right (ugh thanks. I thought I was the only one who thought that...) but she fixed it! :) My only criticism is on the side bangs. They're not quite what I wanted. I kind of regret asking for them but I can easily fix it myself. I also don't think I explained how I wanted them very well. I should have brought a picture. It's okay though! my other criticism is on the cleanliness of the tools... she didn't seem to sanitize them after each use including combs and brushes. I don't care too much, but I know that's one of the things my parents look for. Overall great experience. I'm definitely going to come back! It's hard enough finding hair salons that know asian hair let alone charge less than $40 let alone know what they're doing. Judy knows how to cut hair. Edit: Bangs were great. Judy is sweet and skilled at what she does! Cut my hair for fun at home and left room for fixing before heading down the street to Gentle Cuts. Around 3 PM there was no wait at all and Judy seated me as soon as I sat down. Something was just really perfect about the song that was playing (KyXy) and getting my hair cut when no one else was in there. Judy is a really nice lady to talk to and got my hair nicely layered up in about 20 minutes for $15 bucks. I'll be honest, I've always gone to a barber for my hair, but was in need of a haircut badly and was in the neighborhood (way out of my hood) eating dumplings at Kingdom of Dumplings (yum!). Tried getting into a few barbers closer to my area but everyone was appointment only and over 60 bucks. ( I'm new to the SF, used to paying about 30 for a great barber...) tried Judy out, only takes walk ins, super sweet and best part did a great job for a lot less than 60 bucks! Slight wait but really liked Judy. Not bad for a cheap and quick cut. 15 for women and 12 for men. However, my only advice is to keep it simple. If you are looking for a dramatic change, this might not be the place to go. As in, don't coming in with super long hair and decide that you're going to get a Pixie. Second hair cut since I've moved up to San Francisco and I hope Judy will continue to work here as long as she can because I'm done searching for a place to get my cut. If you can, try coming on the weekdays before 3pm. Saturdays are usually packed and she said the wait could be an hour or more depending on how many clients she has. She said she wishes she could cut everyone's hair right away. But she prefers to take her time and gets the cut right the first time and win you over as her go to stylist. She enjoys what she does and hopes to do it for as long as she can to put her kids through college. A lovely women, shes always cheerful and tries to make conversation to avoid awkward moments for the client. She isn't afraid to ask you questions on how you want your hair to make sure she accomplishes your request. You won't get a better haircut until you spend well over $100, and even then I'd still bet on Gentle Cuts. The woman that runs this place has impeccable attention to detail, is efficient but will take the extra time needed when needed to do a good job. Ya you won't get a hot towel while you sip on a complimentary scotch sitting in an oak and leather vintage barber chair, or any other of that pretentious stuff, but you will get an amazing haircut for just over $20 before tip, which I count as a win. My son and I just got our first haircut here and I have slightly mixed reviews. My haircut was not exactly what I was looking for. I got more of a buzz cut instead of a well defined style. This is most likely a result of my lack of communicating exactly what I wanted properly so I'm not dropping any stars b/c of that. My son (6 years old) on the other hand got a pretty nice cut and she very gentle with him. So my breakdown is: positives: * great deal on hair cut only $12 at the time 12/2011 * hair stylist was very friendly * did a good job on my son's hair. He has curly hair and I've seen other hair salons mess up his hair and sometimes nick his ears with the ciippers. * trimmed my eyebrows (this was the first for me) * local business negatives: * probably the only negative would be in regards to my haircut and that would be to possibly double check / confirm the cut. Overall, I think it's a good place for the price and would definitely take my son back there again. She always gives me the haircut I want (and over the years I've asked her to give me quite a few different styles - just show her a photo of the style you want) and never disappoints. Judy is very sweet, and I love coming to her shop. She's very attentive and responsive to my feedback, so if I want something changed (like the length a little shorter above the ears, or a little more tapering in the back) it's no problem. The other thing I love about Judy is that she always remembers me, which makes me feel right at home when I sit down for a cut. she also remembers your last trim length and style, so you don't have to worry about getting a different cut every time you visit. It's a one woman shop though, so there's usually a little bit of a wait on weekends. For me, however, it's well worth the wait. I recently moved out of state, but you can bet the next time I'm in San Francisco I'll be dropping by for a haircut! Very good for a simple guy like me who just wants a clean, good looking cut. I moved 4 years ago to the South Bay and whenever I make it up to the city, I try to make it a point to get a haircut from Judy. I have a LOT of very thick hair and I have not found anyone who can thin my hair out quite like her. The first time she did it, I admit I was shocked by it. It looked like a small animal had died on the floor. How could I have any hair left after a cut like that?! In the end, my hair felt much lighter and was very easy to manage. Judy isn't one of those chatty hairstylists which I honestly appreciate--I'd rather her focus on her work than anything in my personal life.
