Rarely am I impressed with a haircut (that didn't cost me 50 bucks anyway), but I was after I went to Gentle Cuts. I decided to check this place out since I wanted to go somewhere near my house. I briefly showed Judy, who is a warm, friendly lady, a picture of what I wanted, and she went to town. I could actually see the style developing as she worked. By the time she finished, it looked exactly the way I pictured it, which almost never happens. It didn't take very long too. In the end, all it cost was $12, and I added a well-deserved tip. Judy does very good work and could not be nicer. I would recommend her to anyone. She has cut my hair twice so far this year. Each time, I dropped in to her shop on a weekend. I have brought a picture of the haircut I am hoping for, and Judy has looked at it, and has given me exactly what I've wanted. Haircuts from Judy are affordable (mine cost $15), careful, and done efficiently (but not rushed, at all). Customers have tended to flow in while Judy is cutting my hair, though, and I have had one or two people ahead of me each time I have arrived at the shop, so calling and scheduling an appointment may be a good idea if you want to minimize any wait. A plus: There's a great selection of magazines to read while you're waiting for your turn, including some architectural magazines I've never seen at a hair salon. read more

This place is de-light-ful. My almost-two-year-old daughter has had three haircuts here at this point and each one was better than the last. Judy is the toddler whisperer--my daughter went from apprehensive on her first visit to incandescent with excitement on word of what will now be her fourth time here. it's assumed that the more time a hair stylist spends on a head of hair, the better the results, at least that's what i used to assume. after my last 2 visits to a certain beauty school and getting the "red carpet hair treatment" that lasted almost 2 hours, i found myself disappointed at what i saw in the mirror. even after having every strand of my hair examined, cut, re-examined, re-cut, the outcome was still lackluster. judy at gentle cuts, on the other hand, cuts with conviction. she asked me how much i wanted to cut, then pointed at where she would cut for my approval, and went for it. i was in and out in 20 mins. she's wasn't too chatty, which i really appreciated, i'm not one to spill my life story to a stranger during a 2 hour hair session. she's super nice and friendly. i might have just found my go to hair salon. read more

Went here for the first time 2 weeks ago. I'd been going to see Jay at Sunset Barber for years, mainly because his dad was so great. I have to say that Jay rarely seemed to get the length equal on all sides. So I thought I'd try Judy after reading all of the great reviews about her. I am so happy to say they are totally justified! She gave me the best haircut I've had in a very long time. She is very sweet and the owner of the shop. Her prices are fantastic, and who can't use to save a few dollars these days. Judy is the best, I wish I could take her back to SoCal with me. Very attentive to detail and is happy to adjust anything you dislike. She is amazing with both cutting edge/trendy cuts and with traditional cuts (at least for men). She's great with Asian hair and caucasian hair. I got a haircut at SuperCuts a couple of days ago and they really screwed it up. My hair was extremely uneven and choppy and not what I asked for at all. Fortunately, I had a friend who suggested I come to Judy's place, Gentle Cuts to get it fixed. I decided to give it a try. First off, let me just say that Judy is the sweetest haircutter/stylist I have met. A lot of the past hair cutters I've been to, the stylist was always too chatty. I wanted them to focus on my hair, not their own problems. That was never a problem with Judy. The only times she would talk is to ask if I wanted to cut shorter or differently. She would ask little questions here and there but I didn't feel like she was overbearing like others have been. The end result was way better than what I got at SuperCuts. Lesson learned. If you want a good quality, cheap haircut, Gentle Cuts is definitely where you want to go. read more

What I love about this place that you don't need an appointment. Just walk in. I did use a picture as a reference and she cut it exactly like the picture. Well of course after three weeks of having my hair grow a bit, it looked just like the picture. I needed a place that was cheap. This place was fantastic. I came in and she(Judy) fixed my hair in 30 minutes. I love how she made sure I liked how she was cutting my hair and asked questions along the way. And the price is only $12, really cheap! The L light rail runs along Taraval so getting there by public transit is great. I will come back here again! read more

This place is fantastic. For the price of $12 you will not find a place better. Although Judy is the only person working, she works fast and is very detailed in her cuts. I decided to try this place because my old place screwes up my bangs last time. I told judy i wanted my split ends off and side bangs. She was very gentle and paid attention to cutting my hair. She didnt cut my hair way too short like other barbers do. My hair feels really soft now but the cut wasnt exactly what i was looking for. I asked her how much a haircut was on the phone and she said $15 so i handed her a $20 expecting a $5 change but i didnt get it. It was my fault for not communicating effectively though. I went here for convenience and ended up very disappointed. I asked for a taper cut which is very simple to any barber --- a straight 2 on top 0 on the bottom taper and she failed to do it. Her techniques were kinda off as well I began to notice I wasn't going to get what I wanted when I saw her cutting techniques. I've been to Marinello's and got a better haircut for $5. I am very upset and will NEVER get another haircut. Stay away from this place unless you're looking to get a buzz cut. read more

You could be waiting for an hour plus, and it's finally about to be your turn, and someone swoops in off the street and goes in front of you with no explanation given.
