Been going to Vivian for so many years, it has to be 20+, started in my younger days, then started bringing my son - she is awesome and remembers how to cut your hair the way you like it! My son is very picky about who cuts his hair, and he doesn't like it when anyone else's cuts his hair, never turns out right. She does a great fade - she's the best! I've taken my nephews here for quarterly cuts when we first found them during the pandemic and they always come out looking fresh. My nephews show the nice ladies a photo of what they want their cuts to look like and they get right to it. Never missing! Place is quiet and quaint for the most part. We never have to really wait when we come Saturday mornings but we came on a Saturday late afternoon once and it was busy! These ladies are so gentle with them. They take their time to set them up and cut their hair. I am never taking my nephews anywhere else as long as this place stays open! read more

If you need a barber, definitely City Cuts is the place to go, however if you want a trained and licensed hair stylist, go to Private I on Geary Blvd. I just had my first hair salon experience and although the decor isn't as designer as the old 77Maiden Lane or Yosh hair salons were in the early 2000s, the haircut that the stylist gave me was really great. I definitely will keep going to Private I, and my son will go to City Cuts! read more

I get my nails done here, and the manicurist, Bo does an excellent job! My nails last 4-7 days, which is amazing for me, since I wash dishes a lot, and she is always wonderful conversation while I'm there...and for only $8, it's a steal!!! Pedicures are $14, also a bargain, and she's very good at making my big loppers of feet look good! A lot of people worry about cleanliness in nail salons. Bo wears gloves on her hands when she works on clients and covers soaking tubs with new plastic bags for each new customer. Her nail utensils soak in disinfectant between clients and are clean for each use. I've been going to her for over two and a half years, and never had any problems. She's also very gentle on my cuticles, which is important to me! While other salons have left me bloody, Bo never has given me even the slightest uncomfortable snip! My partner goes here for his haircuts and always comes back looking good. It's not a place I would go for my hair, since I have very curly hair and have a policy that anyone who cuts my hair has to also have curly hair (all the women here are of Asian descent). But I would definitely recommend City Cuts to men/boys. I've also seen the women here give good cuts to women with straight hair. This place is great for what it is: a neighborhood, inexpensive hair and nail salon. The prices are right and the employees are nice...what's not to like?! read more

If you are on a budget - and need a trim - get your trim with Vivian. Since I've gone back to grad school, I can no longer see my previous hair whisperer - since her work is over budget for me. The cut came out to $13 without tip. I requested a basic trim to clean up the previous cut from months ago. Vivian is awesome. She always gives me the cut I like. Interesting story about Vivian too. I went though a phase of shaving my own head for a couple of years, in that time I didn't go to a barber at all. After I started growing my hair out I went back to Vivian for a haircut. As soon as I sat down with her she opened her drawer and handed me my sunglasses I thought I lost two years ago but turns out I left them on her station. I never thought I'd see them again and by that time were out of my mind and completely disregarded but Vivian kept them and remembered me after all that time .... how awesome is that? This review is for the lady in the back with glasses- don't bother with her! I ended up going in here bc my usual barber was booked up and I didn't make the appt in time. Lady with glasses must have been waiting all day for a client because she popped right out of her seat after I laid one foot in the door. I tell her specifically how I like my hair cut and after the first snip u alrwady knew it was too late to go back or else it'd be too short in one area. My wife gets her medi-pedi on here as well. City cuts is amazing! The hair dressers there are amazing! They listen to you and keep you entertained. They ask for all the details before they start to avoid any mistakes. They are sweet and sociable people. The price is cheap and reasonable. I got my highlights done there and it turned out great! I got golden brown highlights and it lasted for about three months and still looks great! My friends ask me about them all the time. My hair looks amazing too. City Cuts, I think it was Jason who told me about you. He's directed me to my local dentist, doctor, and now to my local barber. First of all, you're cheaper than Super Cuts. I don't go to you to get the latest style, or to get my hair colored; I just want to get my savage and unruly mop tamed, and you do that with grace and aplomb. For a simple trim customer, you always treat me right: you check the length on each section of my head before you start cutting so I can adjust accordingly. You ask me all the right questions before the cutting begins, and you even trim my sideburns, and compliment my hair color. You do have a strange habit of blow-drying and teasing my hair up after each cut, so that I look like a 50 year old man for a few minutes, but I'm going home to shower off the little itchy hairlets anyway, so I don't mind. And with prices so reasonable and service so friendly, you could put makeup on me before I leave, and I would still come back every two months. read more

I DO NOT recommend this place at all. I just had my first and worst experience yesterday .i had never been to a salon before, i did my hair myself all the time and i thought those stylists out there would be more professional than i am. so i gave in... Ok,right after i went into city cuts and told the lady i wanted to add some blonde highlight strips on my dark brown hair. They helped me dyed my hair with brown so to cover my original black hair, then eventually dyed blonde strips on my hair. Took them 3 to 4 hrs to finish the whole thing, while blow drying my hair, thought it would come out nice. But right after i got home and used another mirror to look at my back highlight strips, they are so uneven! My right side of the hair and my bang has too freaking much highlights and my left side only have couple and can BARELY SEE THEM,the blonde color turned out to be weird, cant say its blonde..but dark yellow..just IMAGINE IT.. i feel so embarrassed walking in the street today ..i spent 100 bucks there!! i was really mad after i got home, but i regreted i should have to look at my back hair before i stepped out the salon. WASTED MY TIME AND MONEY..and have to spend again to fix it .... i know i will not come back again, bad product and unprofessional stylist. BUT in the mean time, i saw many guys walked in for hair cuts, looks like they only good at cutting... read more

I don't understand why so many Chinese barbers can not grasp the concept of "i only want half of an inch cut off." My hair was already a bit over 2 inches long, so i figured i gave her enough cushion so that if she cut my hair longer than my desired length, it would still look decent; but no! she shears my hair like it's an overgrown lawn, leaving me w/ a little less than an inch of hair - making me look like Buddha's Delight. (This is my first time here, so i don't know how good, or bad, the other people are). Right before my first day back to school to. So I have just started going here for haircuts and I was scared to go to a new place for a haircut, but it was a great experience. They have wi-fi while you wait and they let you bring in boba to drink. They cut my hair well and if you give them a picture to copy, they will copy it pretty well (wait for it to grow out to that cut). Overall a good place to get a haircut. read more

Vivian. Owner, proprietor, matriarch @ Chair #1. We've been coming here since my son Mars desperately wanted his long beautiful curly hair cut after being teased in kindergarten. He was about to turn 5, he's now 21 so by my old math that's 17 years of great, timely, fashionable haircuts for my son, me and at times even my wife. Doesn't matter the style or trend Vivian can do it. If her schedule is absolutely packed she'll refer you to one of her other stylists all mostly competent and up to date and able to cut and style your hair anyway you'd like. (1 -2 mediocre haircuts in 17 years seems fair). Always friendly and courteous yet firm and direct English may not get forté but believe when I say she understands what you say and what you want even though she may not be able to reiterate it to you. Chairs 2 -4 less so. There's also a manicurist on duty who does a great job and besides Vivian is throne other constant here. Prices are reasonable, haircuts are great, best to call ahead to ensure a spot in that #1 chair otherwise stroll in anytime before 7pm for a haircut. read more

I wouldn't trust my blonde locks to anyone in the City except those on Maiden Lane (yeh, call me a snob) ... but this review is my take on what they did with my fwb : ) He's older, like 42 and has had the same cut since probably middle school. I walked in and the Chinese lady asked ME what I like - I told her and she said she will change the guy to have a "young" style. After the shorter hair cut, I have to admit, he looks more like an older guy friend than my father (hah!!) Actually, the experience was good and now he has a place to go at a great price (with tip, was about $15). If this was a restaurant, I would rate it the same because it had a clean but small bathroom. Btw, when I was waiting.. I slipped out for a tapioca tea (T-Pumps) and found him a shirt from Goodwill down the block. Implying that there's things to do/get other than cheap haircuts around here. okay i just went here today and i wanted the dark red color for my hair . i got jessica to do it for me and i said i wanted the same shade of red as her. at the end the color barely showed. my hair is still mostly my original black hair color in the back especially. i gave them 45 dollars and 5 dollar tips. wasn't worth it because the hair color wasn't bold enough to show up well. they atleast could of lighten my hair before applying the color so the red would show up better. she is a good hair cutter because i got my hair cut by her a few months earlier but the coloring wasn't so good. there was also a little boy that came in for a haircut. i don't know who the hair cutter was but she looks mid age and was VIOLENTLY cutting the boy's hair ! the razor went SWISH SWISH very fast . the boy started crying that it is hurting him and the dad complained about the red marks on his son's neck. then that woman finally started slowing down since the dad complained about his son getting hurt. wow what a day. i next time i will color my hair somewhere else but i will continue getting my hair cuts there. read more

I went here for a pedicure because I was itching for one and as it was around the holidays, my regular pedicure lady was either booked solid or out for vacation. I'd heard this place was supposedly clean, so hey I went. The pedicure was adequate, my toes looked fine, the basin used was lined with plastic. However, I was very unimpressed with the bland and unvaried selection of colors they had for polish, I like to be able to get my toes painted blue, purple, or orange, not just various shades of red or pink. I also did not have a lot of confidence in the towel used to dry my feet. It had a few stains on it and did not feel clean. In addition, it looked like they hadn't cleaned their floor in a while either. The whole experience just left me feeling kind of dirty and unsatisfied. In the future, I'll just wait until I can get an appointment with my regular pedicurist, and I'll keep going to Nicole's for all my hair and nail needs. They always do a good job with me, are clean, and make an effort to make the place look nice. read more

I mean I certainly wouldn't come here to get a new hairstyle or for the experience/ambience, but for a MUCH needed trim this was great! I told her cut 1-1.5 inches straight across, she showed me probably 2-2.5, and likely cut off 3 or so. But I still have split ends so how can I complain? My hair needs work. She was nice, gave some sound advice to maintain my hair (e.g. trim it a little more regularly), seemed thorough and spent a surprising amount of time considering the cut only cost $16. I've had about 6 haircuts here, always with great results. Vivian has been working there about 20 years, and she has a steady and regular crowd of locals who appreciate her experience and consistent quality. It seems most of her clients are white males, and perhaps their hair style is her specialty. Sarah, her younger colleague, is rather excellent as well and has a keen eye for detail and style. I've not used the other stylists there. For a $12 haircut, this place is an absolute bargain, and more in line with $25/cut locations based on experience and quality of stylist. I've not dabbled in perms, color treatment, etc. so I cannot speak for that. Yet if you're looking for a great haircut in a welcoming environment, City Cuts is the place I recommend in the Sunset district. read more
