Writing this review makes me sad because I have been a patient at Gentle Dental for nearly 15 years. Last year I went in for an exam but it had been a few years since my previous cleaning and my teeth were in rough shape. The dentist wanted to remove 7 of my teeth! I was shocked and declined the removal. Instead I sought out other alternatives. I had each quadrant of my mouth "scaled" - a deep cleaning procedure that I've had done before. Then I got a water pic and started to up my daily maintenance. When I went back for my 6 month exam this year I received high praise on how good my teeth were and nobody said a thing about those 7 teeth still needing to be removed. Thanks to MYSELF I managed to save and retain all of my teeth! Then, just recently I started experiencing some pain in my gums. It felt like one of my wisdom teeth was trying to grow sideways out of my gums. After a week it hadn't really gotten better so I scheduled a short appointment just to have it checked out. The hygienist took an x-ray and then the dentist came in. He took a quick look and told me that it's not infected, just a small cut in my gums most likely from eating something sharp. He said it's healing fine and I don't need antibiotics. He then shocked me when he said "I recommend removing the wisdom tooth." Then the next thing I knew he was numbing my gums and preparing a shot. That's when I freaked out!!! I was on my lunch break and told him I needed to get back to work. The hygienist said "oh that's fine, you can go back to work." These people clearly do not get to know their patients. First of all, I immediately started to sweat and shake and panic and felt light-headed. I had so many questions, and even if I did decide to have my tooth removed I would need anxiety medication beforehand, someone to accompany me AND to drive me home afterwards, pre-purchased foods at home to eat while my gums healed, and definitely time off from work! I'm also a smoker, so knowing that I wouldn't be able to smoke after having a tooth removed I would need to mentally prepare and plan ahead for that. These people are so quick to jump to "we need to remove your teeth!" Beware! They didn't give me any time to think, just react, and my reaction was to leave. Perhaps if they had sat down calmly and gave me some information to help me understand WHY they thought the tooth should come out then I could at least understand my options, but I was aghast when they didn't even give me any post-surgery instructions beforehand, what to expect, etc. They didn't even give me any time to register what was about to happen. If you have dental anxiety like I do I DO NOT recommend this place. I DO however recommend taking their advice with a grain of salt, stand up for yourself and don't let them pressure you into unnecessary tooth extractions! read more

I've been here on and off over the years due to insurance. It's been just ok. Some of the people are super nice and some are not. I've received $500 broken mouth guards twice and had to have them redone. Fine, things happen. The last few times I needed cleaning or fillings, I've had to wait months for an appointment. That's fine, I get your busy. But I had two upcoming visits scheduled for August and September that I made in January. The other day I got a text saying the hygienist I was to see was leaving and they didn't have anyone else to see me so they were canceling my appointment. No reschedule, just canceled. I've already been waiting 7 months. A few days later I get another text saying the dentist is leaving and they are also canceling my September visit. What the heck? Now I have no interest in going back and have to do the whole ridiculously time-consuming research for a new practice. read more

If I could give a zero I would. My husband started going to this dentist. His first appointment got canceled as he was walking out the door. His appt was 7 a.m. He made another appt. It was canceled. I would say out of the 10 appt he made. He been seen 3. I made my appt back in April and got July. My got canceled. They didnt even call me. Just a text. They told me that the dentist didn't work there any more. I have a hard time believe that they didn't know she/he was leaving a week before my appt. If I can't even get my first appt and my husband can't get seen half the time. We are going somewhere else. I'm not start with a dentist and never know if I'm going to have a appt or the same doctor. Dr. Thayer is a very skilled dentist; highly personable, and has proved very effective dealing with a patient's Low Pain Threshold (LPT). LPT means that dental work begins after the usual shots, then must stop for added injections, followed by a pause for anesthetic to work. LPT dental work usually requires ~2x as long. as regular appointment. Fortunately Dr. Theyer is unusually good in giving shots. He has a skilled office staff too. read more

I have been going to this clinic for over 5 years and I am done with their constant staff changes. Every time I go to get my teeth cleaned there is a new dentist. NO one ever tells you there is a new dentist he just shows up in the room and says he is the new dentist. There are not able to keep more than one dentist at a time so you have no say in who you want your dentist to be. If I got to the doctor and someone strange comes into the room and says he is my new doctor, I would be horrified. Why is it not the same with a dentist? He or she performs very personal services on you person, so you should be able to choose who does that. You have no idea who this person is, what their credentials are, where they went to school or how long they have been practicing. My recent trip was horrible with the hygienist Beth trying to sell me on their new dentist, who could not speak English very well or seemed to not be able to understand my questions because he just stood back and let her do the talking. What is that all about? Not letting anyone drill on me who I can't communicate with me. read more

I had a HORRIBLE experience that was a complete debacle, causing me to change dentists and clinics! I had my bi-annual appointment mid-May at which time the hygienist told me, (AFTER she did my cleaning) "The doctor is not in today, but we really should make an appointment to get x-rays and see him. I did so and returned later same month. My appointment was made for 10:00 and was told it would be brief; just needed to get x-rays, have the dentist look at and be done. (NOT the case!) I arrived promptly at scheduled time, got the x-rays and waited and waited for the dentist to come in. I sat there for 35 minutes, all the while hearing him have a full conversation with the patient across the hall. They both talked and laughed incessantly; then when he blew in blew me off' by nonchalantly saying, "Oh sorry about that; sometimes I lose myself in the time." I left fuming, and next day made appointment elsewhere! I do NOT recommend this clinic; and to add insult, is that NO one bothered to extend me the courtesy of calling to say he would not be in--therefore would need two appointments. Did not bother to ask if I would like to reschedule. SO DONE!! Oh, one more thing----I have been a patient for several years and this clinic goes through dentists like crazy! Something is SO wrong with this picture! And last: I noticed there are no good reviews with current dates. Any of the good reviews are outdated; the dentists mentioned are no longer there--and several others have come and gone. Where are any current reviews besides this? read more

I've put off going to the dentist for long enough that I had some significant cavities that needed attention. From the beginning the dental assistant Jenne and Dr. Thayer were incredibly welcoming and attentive. They made me feel very relaxed throughout the entire process and I appreciated Dr. Thayer explained each step and took the time to make sure I was completely numb before starting. I just got back from my second appointment with Dr. Ellis. I'm not your typical dentist goer, I'm heavily pierced and tattooed, I've lived a long and rough life and have not treated my teeth well. Dr. Ellis literally rebuilt 3 of my teeth in one sitting, 1 of which I was positive would have to be pulled. I had little to nothing left of the tooth and he was able to restore and reshape it using fillings. I do not hesitate to say these are the best looking teeth I have EVER had. I will be going back every month to get the rest of my teeth replaced. I love his work, the staff is friendly and down to earth, and I did not feel rushed or pressured at all. This location was able to see me for some emergency dental work before my dental insurance lapsed (due to a change in employment). I called several places that just said sorry... No openings. Gentle Dental actually took the time to check with the dentists in the office to see who could squeeze me in. Turns out my procrastination/laziness will cause me to have some more dental work done but Dr. Andrews and the hygienist were helpful, attentive and everyone was extremely kind. I have always had a negative experience with every dentist I had growing up. I put off going to the dentist as long and humanly possible, once I became and adult and had to start setting up my own. I found Gentle Dental online, and they accepted my insurance so I though I would give them a try. I immediately loved it. The receptionists were ALL so nice, every time I call or come in. I can always get an appointment within a week of my call, and they even call me back if the time I actually wanted becomes available. I have worked with Dr. Ivan from the beginning and he is just great. He always explains everything to me, makes sure I understand, and always gives me options to fix my problems. Wow. One of the most unprofessional places I have ever been to. I work in a field in which I train staff to provide an amazing customer experience. Everyday, I review NPS (Net Promoter Score) and CSATS (Customer Satisfaction). My dentist recommended I see an Orthodontist and referred me to this office. When I made an appointment and requested the address I was told "It's across from the 7/11". Being new to town I had to repeat my need for an address and was told them same thing. The idea of going to a Dentist that mentions that they share space with a 7/11 already worried me. When I arrived today it was across the street from the 7/11 and next to a liquor store in a shopping mall. The woman at the front desk wore a faded pull over hoodie and jeans with holes in them and talked loudly about her personal life with a friend before helping me. A younger dental assistant walked me into my room and said she could tell me cap was old because her mother had some that were grey around the edges. I let her know it was done within the past few years at another Gentle Dental. She also couldn't seem to locate my records. I had them sent from my previous dentist to the one I saw last week and somehow this office was unable to acquire them. The Orthodontist came in, looked at my teeth, and nonchalantly said to the assistant that I would I need braces for two years. This is without even talking to me, personally. I was immediately aghast. When I asked what he was talking about he told me that I would need braces and then would wear a retainer for the rest of my life. He finally sat me up and said it's not a big deal because I look young and have tattoos. I have no idea what tattoos even have to do with dentistry. I am 26 years old. I would be 28 when I would get them off. I asked for other options and he gave me an amused look. He mentioned the Invisalign and retainers and then wished me luck and left me. This is without explaining the process, the effectiveness, the cost, and the time-frame. I was essentially told, without any tact, that Gentle Dental's previous work was shoddy. That I would need to make a life time commitment, go through pain, and pay $5000 without any information or empathy. This experience makes me want to forgo ever recommending any Gentle Dental to anyone I know and look into doing my business elsewhere. read more

I've been going to Gentle Dental on Coburg for about 4 years now and I've always been happy. I like that cleanings are always convenient and easy to get an appointment. They also never try to upscale me or scare me into additional procedures. I get my teeth cleaned religiously now but the first time I went in I hadn't been to a cleaning in a few years and everyone was really kind and didn't make me feel bad. I recently had some cosmetic tweaking on my front teeth with Dr. Ellis and my experience was really great. He took his time and made sure I was 100% happy when I left. He was also really open about the procedure and what to expect. My only complaint is you sometimes have to wait a long time to see the dentist. I guess that makes sense now that I've had work done with the dentist that he doesn't rush the people he's currently with. Also, sometimes there is some miscommunication between the dental assistants and the front desk which can be frustrating. read more

So far I have had the worst dental billing experience ever! My son got braces there almost 2 years ago. My insurance covers $2000 of it. They still have not billed my insurance. I spoke with my insurance who confirm that I have coverage but they gental dental has not properly requested payment. Everytime I call I'm told that they are working on it. Does it take over a year to work on submitting an insurance payment request? Am I the first person with orthodontics insurance? This has been submitted to the floor manager months ago, still waiting for a call or something. My sons braces come of next month and it still is not resolved. They also can not seem to keep a dentist over a year, there is always someone new when I go in. I would like to have the same dentist for more than 2 visits. read more

I went to Gentle Dental after my insurance changed, and I was able to receive answers to issues I had noted with previous dentists who could not explain them. I had also injured a tooth, and Dr. Ellis took time to examine it and explained what he was thinking. When that didn't completely explain my experience and I shared it with him, Dr. Ellis took time to dig a little deeper, which resulted in an additional test that illuminated a more pressing issue. Throughout all of it Dr. Ellis was thoughtful, communicative, and caring. He even took time for me the next morning when I had questions. The staff, too, were also thoughtful and caring; Ann(e) worked with me prior to Dr. Ellis and she was fantastic. read more

All nice people and very efficiently organized with minimal waiting. However, one family member after moving to Portland had to have very expensive work done at Gentle Dental removed and redone, and the Portland dentist was willing to document the GD shoddy work for filing a complaint. Somehow my admittedly limited insurance almost never applies to the procedures they do (and maybe it doesn't, but I'm suspicious). THey refer you to a very limited number of expensive specialists for extraction, implant, crowns, etc. The fact that they do not have a range of referrals suggests some kind of unhealthy mutual back scratching. Costs seem avg to higher and actual dentists see you for very limited time. I've had some problems with their work. read more
