It was a stressful and overwhelming situation, but their team made the moving and storage process so much easier. The crew was professional, upbeat, careful, and kind from start to finish. They moved our shop out, stored everything in their temperature-controlled warehouse during the repairs, and then brought it all back when we were ready to reopen. As a tea shop, we have a lot of delicate and important items -- displays, retail products, furniture, teaware, and more than 160 jars of loose-leaf tea. Knowing everything was safe, secure, and protected while we were closed gave us so much peace of mind. We really appreciated the care they took with our business and the positive attitude they brought to a difficult situation. It started out good, the guys that were moving my things were very nice. I noticed they didn't use a cover to carry my leather couch up and they ripped it. They also lost my power cord to my couch so that it reclines. One guy by himself brought my heavy coffee table up 2 flights of stairs and I could hear it banging around. After they left and I was checking everything out, I called right away to see what they can do, they weren't very apologetic or sympathetic. Where can I start? There are so many reasons NOT to hire this company. They arrived late and did not come prepared for the job. After the truck arrived they had to go back to Clackamas for boxes & materials. Found out later this was time they charged me for. They stalled & complained they were hungry or sore. I didn't have anything (we were moving out- kitchen was empty!) so I went out to buy them food. One fellow was on the phone for hours arguing & loudly swearing at his girlfriend who broke up with him. I ask the "supervisor" if he could address this as we had small children listening. Even the neighbor children could hear this. Prior to the day they came I had 100% of the kitchen, study, bedrooms and bathrooms packed up & ready for them to load in the truck. All they needed was to wrap/protect, load & drive these larger items to the destination just 5 miles away & unload it. The estimator told me it would take only one day, MAX. Wrong! It took the 3 employees he sent three days. They snapped the legs right off a table while it was still in its place in my house! They were careless, broke, gouged & chipped furniture & pottery. They were wasteful at best, deceptive at worst, packing X-large boxes w/ only a small unbreakable item inside (a TV remote) with mounds of paper around it not even bothering to mark the box. I found them gathered together in an empty room, door shut, & visiting. I found them, door closed again, sitting on my furniture, feet up. I found them on the side of the house. These guys stretched one day into three, costing us thousands of dollars in damage to my belongings and property. Worse experience ever. read more

My personal experience was good. My needs and budget were less constraining than most, so I'll review with relevant context. Andy was quite proactive and easy to work with on scheduling, etc. Would've been nice to have a rough estimate of the duration of the job, but I understand why they avoid doing that. In the end, the truck was bigger (27') than I needed but the number of guys (2) was just right for my 2bd condo. I thought Brandon and Luke were rather swift, taking ~5.5 hours to complete the move with ~5min driving between sites. A little extra time (and personal effort) was eaten up by repeating directions and correcting furniture placements, but it wasn't much more than 30min total. The total ($929 plus a generous tip) was something I could live with. That said, I wasn't super impressed by the level of care. While everything arrived intact, a few boxes labeled fragile were crushed and dented. A lot of scratches and dents to furniture. I only saw one item dropped - a durable one, thankfully. But my wooden bed frame was moved without protection - so too my mattress, couch, wooden end table, and a vintage leather chair - on a damp, muddy Portland winter day. At one point, my couch cushion was laid face down on the wet, dirty truck ramp. Things happen, but still... scuffs and blemishes abound where literally nothing is done to prevent them. Second time a month later to move our household to a different house and also to pick up items in storage. I had previously packed our household into boxes. Extremely Disappointed - Incomplete Move & Unprofessional Response This was my first time hiring a moving company after doing several DIY moves, so I carefully researched online before choosing Gentle John's based on their quick response and a very charismatic salesperson who made a great first impression. He followed up as promised after I paid my deposit, but after that, I didn't hear from him again until after the move--and that's where things went downhill. The three movers showed up on time in the afternoon, but they started loading boxes before furniture. My husband politely asked if that was the best way to load the truck, but we trusted their expertise. Big mistake. By the end of the move, over a third of our belongings were left behind--including our dining table and two storage shelves. We were told they suddenly didn't have enough room, despite the fact we have minimal furniture and I had made it clear we were moving from a third-floor unit when I booked the service. When I asked what could be done to complete the move, the movers simply said they had to head to the next job and couldn't help further. No offer to come back. No solutions. Just a "sorry." I paid the extra time and signed because I needed my belongings, but I called the original salesperson after, and that conversation was even worse. He was rude, dismissive, and told me I should have asked for them to go back for the remaining items--something that was never offered as an option. I would have gladly paid for a second trip had it been suggested. I expressed that we were in an emergency situation and might need their services again (only because our new apartment management required the same company), and still, no courtesy or customer care--just blame-shifting and excuses. In the end, I had to rent a U-Haul and hire two more movers to finish the job myself--after already paying Gentle John's a premium rate, thinking I was getting top-tier service. Instead, the movers didn't complete the job, and the company failed to make it right. Do NOT use this service. Poor planning, lack of follow-through, and extremely unprofessional communication. He gets out looks at it and didn't say anything my Neighbor witnessed the whole thing. I have spoken with Nick serval times not a nice person to deal with. I filled a police report for hit and run. THE WORST moving experience I have ever had. Gentle John's moving is the polar opposite of gentle. I watched them throwing our boxes up the stairs, aiming too high and then the box hit the ceiling and then the ground. Then they spirited it away up the stairs and into the truck to keep me from checking for damage. Boxes covered in the word FRAGILE and DO NOT STACK ON at the bottom of stacks in the truck and at the new house. Food boxes upside down with oils leaking all over. Clothing boxes and shoe holders out in the shed in the back yard that should have gone into the house. Even with me standing there telling them where everything went as they unloaded the trucks, and boxes that were marked and color coded to rooms, nothing went where it was supposed to go. It took 3 hours to load the trucks and then over 8 hours to unload, costing us $4000 more than we were quoted. To top it all off, they damaged pretty much every piece of furniture and antique that we own and ignored our damage claim and phone calls. I had a different experience with Nick. He refused to repair furniture they broke. I asked the company not to remove a mirror from a chest but to move it in one piece, and they promised that it would be done. They took the mirror off, took half an hour to put it back on, and it was left in a very wobbley condition. Now that dresser will not stand alone without the mirror falling off. It was okay before it was moved. Nick says that they will pay me 60 cents by the pound, and it is up to me to find someone to repair it. I told them not to do it and they did it anyway. He not only pitched in, but he canceled his current booking for the day and brought his team into my house, a 3000 square foot 2 story home, with the heaviest of all furniture in the basement. Those guys, Ray, Eduardo and Marcos, were amazing. Not only are they some of the physically strongest people I've ever seen but they worked so well together; constant communication, focus on taking care of my furniture and following company procedure whenever I asked them what they were doing. These were the most respectful people I have had the pleasure of meeting of late. They placed furniture exactly where I wanted it and oftentimes moved it to different rooms based on my female right to change my mind. And are you ready for this ... Took 4 hours for a small job. I called to inform them and they acknowledged that one of their workers was not engaged with the work and might have been let go. I ended up paying for 4 hours something that should've taken 2. I had requested 3 movers and only 2 showed up for some reason and I wasn't informed of the same. This company is awful. My aunt hired them to move. She is over 70 and shouldn't be moving things on her own. She had an antique bookcase that has been in our family for years, it was over 100 years old. I was next in line to have it, but that will never happen now. The company lost it and refuses to take any responsibility. They have also been extremely rude to her in their email communications and not apologetic at all. This was a rotating bookcase, which was handmade. These types of bookcases are sold on eBay for thousands of dollars. I wonder what on earth could have happened to such an item... Furthermore, they say they don't keep an inventory of items, which just baffles my mind since they're a moving company. This is one issue in a long list of them. Not only did Andy not provide this, but I had to keep asking for one and all he kept saying was this was the "flat rate". She laughed as it fell over for the 3rd time. Wtf?? I also had my dad's record collection all first pressings from the 70's. These kids had the boxes without the lids on them stacked up with other heavy items stacked on top. Yup, ruined a bunch of those too. At almost 400$ an hour you expect a professional crew to show up, not a bunch of kids with no common sense. When I called and told them what happened they offered to send me some forms to fill out for compensation. Those never showed up. Do NOT hire this moving company. We used Gentle John's to move an upright piano from one house to another house about 12 miles away. They did get the piano moved but the experience was otherwise not great. First, we were charged a minimum of 2 hours for 3 men, around $450. It definitely didn't take two hours to get the project done, and there wasn't even a need for the third man, as he just stood around and watched the other two work. Second, when they were bringing the piano into our home they snapped a piece off of one of the legs right in front of us and just said "whoops". So much for gentle! We were on a time crunch and Gentle John's got the job done quickly but in the future we will shop around for somewhere more affordable and respectful of our items. read more

The damage I am claiming is for an antique bookcase that was not delivered to the new address. I was a family heirloom passed from my grandfather to my parents to me. My niece is in line to inherit it next. The company claims that they unloaded the bookcase and it must be here somewhere. My current residence is 575 sq ft and I have gone through everything that was unloaded. I did that prior to calling the company and again before formally filing a claim with them. They still claim that it must be here. It is most definitely not! In addition to loss of the item, the move was very unprofessional. After arriving after 5pm to load the truck they were in a great hurry and rushed through both paper work and loading. The team consisted of two Hispanic men and one Caucasian man. Both Hispanic men where congenial and helpful, but speaking and understanding English was a struggle. The white guy was condescending to me and to his co-workers even though one of them was the team leader. I had requested a stop at storage on this end of the move, however due to the delay the evening prior, I was late in arriving in Ashland and did not press for the stop at storage. They unloaded in less than 1.5 hours by piling almost everything in the living room regardless of location indicated on the boxes. As a result the living room was so full I had to rearrange boxes to move into it. That is the reason for the delay prior to informing the company of the missing bookcase. I have moved many times and a variety of distances and this is by far the worst. I am very disappointed in this company because I interviewed three other companies and carefully reviewed comments and chose them even though they were more expensive because I wanted to minimize issues with the move. read more

not the most ideal situation :( gaming PC was broken despite the fact that i packed it with so many precautionary measures. they'll ask you to fill out a claim form and never reach back out to you. be careful when they have you sign, too, they won't tell you what you're signing or give you time to read it. if i knew about the insurance options, i would not have gone with the "60 cents per pound" option. unless you want $6 to replace your near-thousand dollar computer. they did get all of my things moved over in a good amount of time, so there's that at least. read more

Basically, the movers left a large furniture piece in our previous home and wouldn't give us any refund or fix the issue. The movers assured us they'd remember which items to leave, since we were leaving a few pieces for the new owners, even though we asked if we should mark the items. We left just ahead of the movers who also didn't tell us we needed to do a walk-through to ensure we were satisfied. Their English was not good. We realized the next day they hadn't included the one piece of furniture from the kitchen. It was disappointing to pay nearly $700 only to have to go back on the weekend to get the missing item ourselves. So expensive, and while we appreciated the guy who tried to help us, he was brand new on the job (2 weeks experience dealing with customers) and this felt like the company was using the "new guy" to shield themselves from doing the right thing. read more

To say I am impressed with the service of Gentle John's is an understatement. The two men who showed up to help me move were so kind and took such great care of all of my things. My previous apartment was on the third floor, and my second apartment was on the second and was a split level. So LOTS of stairs. I could tell the guys were exhausted, rightfully so, but they kept such a positive attitude and were such a joy to work with. I was very stressed about this move but the two men who showed up made this whole experience so much better and virtually stress free. Scheduled a week in advance. They told us they had one move in the morning and it would be no problem to move us. Asked us to put a $100 deposit down, we paid that. 3 days before they called to confirm the delivery and said they would be done with the move before ours between 1-2pm and they would call us when they were on the way. 2:00pm rolls around we have heard nothing. 2:45pm rolls around we still have heard nothing so we call and leave a message. 3:45pm rolls around still have not heard from them. So we call again. They tell us that they might not be able to do the move today but should be able to do it first thing tomorrow. We tell them to check to see if they can do it tonight and call us back because we made all the arrangements for being off work and being moved out by of our apartment today. They told us they would call back shortly. 4:35pm rolls around and they finally called back. Said they could do it tonight. We say great when can we expect you to be here. Guy on the phone laughs and says hold on. Now he can't do it tonight they just closed up for the night. So we planned this in advance. They didn't call at any point until we started to ask what was happening and then still drug their feet. Now I am going to have to do the move myself. Plus because they drug their feet in letting us know most of the day is wasted. Best bet is to NEVER use these guys. They will waste your time and might not even show up. If you choose to use these guys just be prepared for disappointment. As of 6/29/22 we have not gotten our deposit back even though they were the ones that broke the agreement on when our delivery would be. read more

When I got the Bill at the end of the job, they had tacked on 3 hours for driving time to and from Portland. This was not relayed to me and had it been relayed to me I would have gone with a different company. They said they do that with all moves in Salem area and it should have been told to me. Needless to say, doubling the move bill was a hardship on me and my family. I cannot recommend this company. If they were to make it right, I may change my review. *The following review is an honest opinion of my experience with this company. ******* Worst moving experience we've ever had. We hired them to move us out of a ONE bedroom apartment. Three late-teens showed up and visibly and audibly groveled at the job before they even started. It took a previous moving company 4-5 hours to move us into that apartment - it took these three guys 9.5 hours to do the same thing, and they didn't even get it all in one trip. I had to pay for them to go back because they blatantly ignored an entire room of stuff. That's not even the worst part, however. Many, MANY of our items were straight up missing at the end of it all. Boxes with photographs, family heirlooms, and items that couldn't be replaced were all gone. I had a large wheeled cart that had all of our rugs in it, a carrier type of thing, and instead of just wheeling it up as intended - they took all the rugs out and walked them up one by one, and then the basket was never to be seen again! Brand new window fans, boxes of Christmas decorations, and many other things were just gone. A great deal of our furniture was scratched up or broken. We had to replace it all. When I called them, the manager yelled at me and pretended that I was swearing to justify hanging up on me, even though I never once used foul language or raised my voice; I contacted the owner, who basically tried to offer me $500, but I could only have it if I signed something saying I wouldn't talk poorly about them - ever - which was really just one requirement on a long list of stipulations. Ultimately, nothing was done about any of this. They initially said they'd pay about 10 cents per pound of the items that were broken, but they have exclusions to that rule. If your furniture was out of the box assembly, it isn't covered; there's a list of items that aren't covered, for whatever reason. It would have cost me more money to waste my valuable time filling out their form than I would've even received from submitting it to them in the first place. If your valuable items don't weigh very much, you'll get barely anything for them, essentially. We basically paid these guys $1900 to break and lose a lot of our stuff, and then take absolutely no responsibility for it whatsoever. When the employees take such poor care of your belongings that there are multiple damages/missing items, and then the company doesn't do anything about it - it makes you wonder what's really going on. Where's their incentive to care for your items if the company itself doesn't explain or take accountability for employee mistakes? Think twice. read more

I'd give zero stars but it makes me choose one. The actual movers and workers are great, doing their best, and hard workers. They're really wonderful. HOWEVER, the administration and people on the phones mislead you and are HORRIBLE. They lied when I had a move scheduled, and the people got forced to come move my furniture after a 14 hour work day. They are such hard workers. And after 7pm the company charges overtime but doesn't pay it to the workers. Really really horrible. Do not hire them. Please don't!!!
