Originally called them thinking we had a septic system-which they don't service, so they recommended another company, long story short we called George Allen and sons once realizing we had a holding tank and pump, and after talking on Friday they came out on Monday (today) and did a great job quickly and professionally diagnosing the problem. I called them to replace our water heater. They charged $750 for very little work and they didn't do a great job. The vent was pretty off-center and they didn't strap it down properly. It is not up to code. The old water heater strap placement probably wasn't to code either, but they didn't mention it. I pointed out that the straps were loose and they said "oh, it's just meant to keep it from tipping over". No, they're supposed to stop any movement, otherwise the heater itself may be damaged in an earthquake. I tried cinching the straps tighter but it wasn't flush with the wall so it will never be secure until I drain it and move it flush to the wall or put a 2x4 brace behind it. And the original straps are not the required 4" above the gas controls, not that they mentioned it. I'll have to redo it. On the plus side, they were friendly enough and friendly to my dog. Nothing is leaking. In case it wasn't clear, the $750 was just for the heater installation and removal, they advised me to pick up the new water heater myself so I did. read more

I had to call the plumber on a clogged kitchen sink at my dad's house. Since my parents moved into the Silver Spring Lakes retirement Community, they always had plumbing issues. The kitchen sink especially was problematic and my father had a bad experience with a local plumber where it seemed like he was "soaked". Consequently, for years we did the best to baby the sink, and garbage disposal, because my father feared what the next plumbing bill would be. Needless to say our luck ran out a few days ago, and I contacted George Allen and sons to fix the clogged sink. I was happy to receive honest polite prompt and competent service. My father feared up charging where the new plumber would try to replace everything for some big 5000$ charge. Instead, the total fee came out to 250$. But this fee was not just fixing the immediate problem. There was a congenital problem that whoever set up the original garbage disposal set it up wrong. They had some kind of deflecting plate/part set in the opposite direction, so when you turned on the disposal it would vent the water from the right compartment of the sink to the left sink, rather than channeling it downward into the drain. Anyway, the plumber sent out also fixed this longstanding defect, so overall I was very pleased with the service I received. read more

I received a phone call first thing this morning from Tyler (3rd generation plumber) at George Allen & Sons Plumbing in response to my call from the day before regarding my water heater problem (it wouldn't re-light after the pilot was blown out during high winds -- it's located outside). I had talked to Tyler briefly the day before on a courtesy call from him letting me know that he was booked solid that day but would get back to me the next morning. Sure enough, he followed through and called me for what I assumed would be to let me know what time he would be coming by. Instead, he told me that during the previous night (on his own time at home) he had been thinking about the situation that I had described to him and thought that he might have a solution to the problem. He said that there is a re-set button that can be tripped if the wind hits it at just the right angle -- it's an uncommon occurrence. Over the phone, he talked me through how to locate and reset this tiny, previously unknown to me, button. He then stayed on the line while I tried to re-light the pilot light. IT WORKED!!! His solution was exactly the right one! He saved me a small fortune, for which I'm extremely grateful. He seemed as happy and excited about it as I was! I have used George Allen & Sons Plumbing many times during the past twenty or so years. They have always done good work at a fair price (no plumbers are inexpensive). We have used them on our property, our rentals, and our extended family have all used them for years. They used to be a great company. However seems they have gone greatly downhill. Yesterday we had them out for a repair on piping next to the sink. They didn't introduce themselves when arriving and said "this us one of hardest jobs I've ever done". He moved our vanity and it broke one side of it (which I can do the repair so wasn't too upset). In addition he was horribly smelling of smoke. However early next morning we saw the pipe under sink that he moved it now leaking in 2 spots. They were coming out same day "in afternoon", so wife stayed home waiting for them. They knocked they said and left their card but didn't call or anything like that. They said it's not industry policy or practice to call when at a service call. I told him I been in construction last 20 years and every company I know its their policy. He said "we've been around since 1961 and it's not the policy to call". It's COMMON SENSE.... We are not using them again and they seemed not to care. We used someone else to do the repair and are fixing what they broke. In addition they charged $220 for 45 minute (at most) and with a $10 hose they used to fix the issue. Call anyone else when needing a plumber. Horrible customer service, bad attitudes and quality has gone way downhill. read more

Needed a new water heater. Below is the pro and cons of my experience in dealing with this company. Pros: -Responsive -Call back in a reasonable amount of time. Installation time was not too far out considering that we just had the CZU fire. -Good local reputation. -Was able to work in a cramped area for installation of my water heater. -Removed a cabinet and a water heater support to install the water heater. -Worked very quickly. -Good installation. -Wore a mask. -Sent a credit card receipt after completion of the work. Cons: -Was not able to select any particular brand or no ability to purchase a water heater with a longer warranty period. Was only able to get a water heater with a 6-year warranty. Would of preferred to buy a more premium water heater with at least a 10-year warranty. -Water heater support was put back and blocks the pilot start/water temp control. -Did not reinstall my cabinet after installation of the water heater. -The price was higher than others businesses that I called. About 20% higher. Will I use them again? Yes. Would I recommend them? Yes. If you are watching your budget, I would not recommend them. If you want quality, reliability and a good reputation, then I would say that they are a business you should consider. You do get what you pay for! I have some plumbing that needs to get completed on the house, but will delay the work till Covid threat is minimized. read more

Tyler Allen was imperative to helping set up our grey water system. We had consulted with multiple landscapers who were grey water specialists, but they were not plumbers. We felt uncomfortable having the landscapers set up the actually plumbing aspect of the grey water system. It was difficult to find a plumber with any knowledge of grey water, until we found Tyler. I'd give 1 million stars if there would be an option!!! Tyler is above and beyond excellent! Had to install a water heater which got broke after 17 years and two other plumbers (who had a great reviews on Yelp, btw...would never put my trust in the reviews ever again) - came over and gave me estimates of $1,250 and said the part got rusted, cost $228 to replace. Talal, owner of Expert Plumbing was the Nightmare Experience (have to applaud for picking a name for what should be called Most Horrible!) . He had guts to send me the estimate for water heater+replacement =$2,258.85 and told me it'll take two men to do the job. I went on line and bought Bradford White from supplyhouse.com for $600 with free shipping and no sale tax. And was lucky to open Scotts Valley newspaper to find George Allen & Sons Plumbing! Got the estimate over the phone for $300 and the part to replace was only $50 not $228. All in all, the cost came at $1,000 total, not $2,258.85 with $100 discount (what a JOKE!!) that Mr. Rooter and Talal with "expert" plumbing wanted to get from me. That's over double the actual cost! Tyler was SUPER efficient, I Wowed when I saw how clean he left everything behind..even took a box of a new heater with him which I was going to cut in pieces and dump. Saved a lot of work for 58yo woman! Best experience with a truly HONEST right in my town company! Can't thank you enough and already told my friends never waste any time on calling other plumbers - unless you want to get scammed for money. Thank you so much for your work, Tyler!!!
